Stopped by on a Saturday morning. Very quiet not very many ppl there. Apparently the first Friday of every month is free so I'm guessing alot of ppl go that day. It was nice to have the exhibits to ourselves. Variety of art and cool gift shop for the very small size. It was nice to sit out on the courtyard to take a small breather and enjoy the cool cement benches. Since it's on campus of the university we also took a walk around and it was nice to see all the old brick buildings with architecture details such as faces etched into the buildings.

A beautiful museum - not big, but there is a lot of interesting expositions. I personally like some modern art sculptures and the Slavic orthodox icons. The inner space with a pool is also a must to visit place - charming during any season! The admission is affordable, and the minor under 18 could visit the place for free!

What a lovely experience! The student exhibit was impressive. The galleries were diverse and inspired. The little courtyard fountain reminds me of the smaller Getty in L.A. $5 adult admission! 10/10 recommend.

JSMA is everything a campus museum should be, and more. Eclectic exhibits (contemporary as well as the permanent Asian collection), contemplative spaces around exhibits, affordable admission, and host international artists and well as a variety of media and installation exhibits. Miss the koi that swam in the small courtyard pool years ago. The gift shop is always enjoyable.

JSM has exhibited amazing artwork from Kandinsky, Rothko, Krasner and more. Upcoming artists, historical artifacts and interactive exhibits. I enjoy every visit.

Warmly welcomed by front desk staff and given a map for our self guided tou. We went during fall U of O Family Weekend. We were given buttons for complimentary entry. Beautiful building, grounds, art sculpture, exhibitis and souvenir store. Super relaxing to to walk around and inspiring. We will be back.

Didn't know it was on the college campus until we arrived but that's fine. It's small but it's only $5 per person so that's a great price. Beautiful courtyard.

A world class treasure in the heart of campus! Not to be missed! Unbelievable exhibits and collection, especially for a small town like ours. Don't forget to check out the sculptures in the courtyard, a wonderful place to enjoy lunch from one of the awesome food carts on Kincaid like Cart DeFrisco and Screamin' Jay's! While you're down there, check out the Museum of Natural History too. An awesome day in combination!

Yelp
DONT ASK QUESTIONS TO THE ?SECURITY?GUARDS, ESPECIALLY IF THEY ARE AN OLDER WOMAN WITH SHORT HAIR I gotta say that I did only come in to look at a piece for an assignment and take notes. But in the 30ish minutes I was there I could say that the place seems to keep a diverse and interesting rotation of pieces from what I saw when I did a quick walk around. This was actually my first time coming here and I was greeted with actually a very nice staff and they were really helpful and open to someone who was new to this museum. I was kind of confused and they were happy to answer my questions. But with the interaction I had upstairs I was honestly uncomfortable and it made my experience kinda sour. At around 4:25pm April 23rd, a ?security? lady with short hair and (if I remember clearly) glasses as well was more than happy to make me feel like I have no brain and was so dumbfounded at me speaking. For context while I was initially walking in, a tour guide (I think) for a class was telling them that they can adjust the pieces if requested to get a better view , but I might've heard incorrectly. I mean I guess so since the security guard basically laughed at my face when I asked if a staff member or someone could do that for me since I wanted a view of the backside of a pottery piece for my assignment. I never go to museums, let alone art museums like this so I was genuinely just asking. Obviously I'm not going to go in and manhandle the pieces myself, I know that much. But I don't believe she had to be so demeaning. Is this like a superiority complex thing for her? Lol. I hope this isn't normal or that this museum allows this behavior. Would've put 1 star but the museum itself is pretty nice and so is the front staff.

Yelp
First- check out their website for free days. It's only $5 but that's a barrier for some & they have monthly first Friday as well as other days free. Second. This museum is excellent -& I admit, I've been misrepresenting it. Pre Covid I went to a show and was deeply underwhelmed. This past weekend while visiting, I ran into an acquaintance and we both commented "did they change something? Wasn't this kind of a meh experience before?" Maybe they got the bigger Schnitzer collection out? New curators? I don't know what happened but it was GREAT. New works are top notch Japanese & Korean collections are small but stellar Contemporary & modern North American artists very broad and high quality choices. Single user bathroom on the second floor also a big winner as is the elevator and the tiny but compelling gift shop. Kudos all around (Wish the cute cafe would open back up. Fingers still crossed)

Yelp
Very small but diverse collection. One of the galleries was closed, so even smaller. Only $5 admission

Yelp
I love a good art museum and I love that this is in town. Only took me 6 years of being a Eugene resident to finally make it through the doors. That's all I can really say. It's hard to review a museum. You either enjoy going or not. I really enjoyed the displays that were open during this trip. I think an art museum is an important thing to have in Eugene.

Yelp
Having moved here from Art museum Mecca (NYC) I so appreciate the quality and diversity of the curation in this museum. I've been a member for 4 years and an annual gift I give to myself and my mom. We go to the artist talks and member events and I'm always so impressed.

Yelp
Great value for the price! Very diverse collection of art; however, the lady working security was incredibly abrasive to my friend and I and another student while we were there. The other student accidentally took their backpack with them to the upstairs gallery, which they request you leave downstairs. The student was wandering the exhibit with their earbuds in, and when security confronted them, she said "Well, maybe if you didn't have your earbuds in, you would hear when people are talking to you". Super rude and unnecessary. After watching my friend and I walk down the stairs, wander the gift shop, we then picked up our umbrellas before deciding to take a loop through the courtyard before leaving. The security lady stoped my friend and I and asked us to leave our umbrellas downstairs to which we had replied that we had already been upstairs and were on our way out the door into the courtyard. To which she replied "Oh! Well, there's no way for me to know where you've just been". Very odd and abrasive, especially considering how welcoming everybody else had been. Good overall experience though!

Yelp
I really enjoyed my visit here in 2019. I can't believe I never posted the review until now. My dog loves walking the area outside and peering into what she's allowed to see at the museum. I put her in the car and explore the museum with a friend. I can't believe that this amazing museum is free and it's in such a convenient location in eugene. It made me miss San Diego just a little bit less. I recommend going here and seeing the exhibits every time they change.

Yelp
Wow, this place is legit! I wasn't expecting much, but what I found was a huge modern space with tons of very cool artwork. There was a ton of variety...older paintings, modern art, mixed-media installations, ancient artifacts and more. There's a lot to explore, you could easily burn a few hours here. There's a decent cafe downstairs and a pretty patio seating area with a pool & fountain. The admission is pretty cheap ($5) but you can get in for FREE on the first Friday of every month, as well as during all home football game weekends.

Yelp
Absolutely not a place to go with children. Or perhaps at all. I should have believed the other reviews that mentioned this and just stayed away. When two security people are literally following from a distance of 10-15' while gossiping about us and another security person is glaring from across a gallery, and a kid is berated for getting "too close" to a work of art when she's over two feet away and trying to see fine details, it's just clear that this is NOT a place for children to feel welcome or open to art. I finally gave up when a panic attack hit me from the intensity and hostility of the various undergrads charged with ensuring me and my kids cannot enjoy the art and my own excessive efforts to ensure my kids stayed so far away from the art they could hardly see it. We lasted twenty-three minutes from the moment we walked in until we gave up and fled. My kids have never attracted so much scrutiny from museum "guards." Not at the Portland art museum, not at art museum in Seattle or at the Detroit Institute of Art, or at the Toledo Museum of Art, or at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. My kids are seasoned museum-goers and at no point came close to touching or appearing to be close to touching any of the art. Their behavior was perfect. This didn't stop security from aggressively policing us, even pairing up to follow closely on our heels. This museum was a profoundly negative experience for me and my kids that will have a long term negative impact on their relationship with art. It'll only take me an hour or so to calm down from the panic attack induced by this museum.

Yelp
I don't get to Eugene often. I need to get on that! The Schnitzer Museum is one of the finest in the region. Schnitzer was inspired to collect prints, on an international scale. Prints are art works where one work is made into numbered versions in few, tens, hundreds; signed and numbered. Mr Schnitzer has chased down the prints matching his aesthetics. His aesthetics are sound. The Museum also brings international non-print shows. So it is worth a watch and worth a visit. The museum also lends Mr Schnitzer's collection, which is cool.

Yelp
I like the museum a lot and wish they had more provocative traveling exhibits. The collection is based on a fine collection of far East pieces from Japan, China and eleswhere but I enjoy some diversity now and then. I was drawn in recently to view the show on Comic Book art and was thoroughly disappointed. The layout and composition of the work was uninspiring unlike the advertising that brought me in. The major works were poorly accentuated and the collection had few standout pieces, I did appreciate the 9/11 historical pieces of comic art but other than that it was forgettable at best. The museum itself is beautiful and worth a visit if only for the surreal watery courtyard and brickwork facade of a bygone era. Also the Marche Cafe inside serves the best coffee and food on campus.

Yelp
Totally enjoyable little museum. Took a couple of hours to go through. Very nice and diverse group of Japanese art when I went. I had the place almost to myself for the first hour of a rainy Sunday morning. I never did figure out the parking; the signs said reserved Monday through Friday so since it was the weekend I parked and hoped for the best! My unticketed car was still there when I got back though.

Yelp
This museum was a great find that I wish I had gone to sooner! I came here with my manager for a casual work meeting. We wanted to chat and since she was in town she chose to do something fun and go check out this museum. Parking was a bit confusing and we had to park about a 5 minute walk away which was fine because a walk through campus on a nice day was enjoyable. I could see it being a little annoying if it was pouring rain or something but maybe we missed their parking lot... I'm not sure. We did have to pay for parking which was fine. We were greeted by a very friendly and welcoming front desk employee who told us all about the museum and what art they had in their exhibits. It was only $6 each and students were free no matter what school you currently go to. This museum could have taken us a couple hours but because we were in a hurry we were just wandered around for half an hour looking at most of the beautiful art. They even had some Andy Warhol and Van Gogh paintings which I was impressed to see. They also have a beautiful outdoor corridor with a pond and beautiful gold ceiling. You can spend time reading a book here or just enjoying the sounds of the fountain. We went on a Thursday afternoon and only saw a few other people in the museum. There are no food or drinks allowed but they have drinking fountains. I could see this being a really great date night or something fun to do when the weather is cold and rainy. I will for sure come back in the winter to see what new exhibits they have.

Yelp
We went there two days ago and it has a nice collection for a small museum. There's also a lovely (small) lily pond with a beautiful gold dome at the far end. (Free) parking is available by the loading dock (there are eight visitor spaces), but you must obtain a parking pass from the person at the security desk (located just inside the double doors). All of the staff with whom we came into contact were very friendly.

Yelp
This is a beautiful little art museum on the campus of the University of Oregon. I especially like the Chinese items and the inner sanctum (cloister surrounding a water fountain).

Yelp
Always enjoy spending time here! Beautiful exhibits and knowledgeable staff. They provided a great experience for my children during a school visit and have always enjoyed my visits. Happy to support this museum.

Yelp
I am a graduate of U of O. My wife and I travelled down there today from Salem to tour the museum. in several places there were security ropes up in front of exhibits. Accompanying text was too small to read so every time I stepped forward to read text an alarm went off. This happened to me three times. I have PTSD and having security approach me three seperate times about this was simply not OK. Is museum staff too stupid to post text that is readable from farther away from the artwork so that visitors do not have to be embarrassed and humiliated in this way? My visit was ruined.

Yelp
So this isn't exactly The Louvre, but it makes for a nice and affordable afternoon. My boyfriend and I have gone twice and will probably go back if they have a new display. The Asian art is interesting, check out the foot binding shoes (Really tiny!) and the finger extension things. In my opinion this is one of the prettiest parts of the campus, just face away from the hideous PLC building. The gift shop also has some interesting things. Overall: there isn't much like this to do in Eugene so it will have to do until I can afford to travel. p.s. During the week avoid parking on campus if you can. We always walk.

Yelp
I decided to come to the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art before moving out of Eugene, and I wish I had come earlier! They offer free admission for students with UO ID cards, and I definitely think that if I had not graduated already, I would have come back here again! There is also a cafe located inside, with a nice lounge area with couches and chairs that would be great for studying. The collection of art housed inside this building is more expansive than I had expected; it's bigger inside than it looks outside! Overall, I'd say it took me about 2 hours to go through this museum at an enjoyable pace, but I imagine one could go through it faster if he or she didn't want to read all the placards and really focus on the art pieces. I was a bit disappointed with the amount of medieval and early modern European art at this museum, since there isn't much and the pieces the museum does have seem to be on loan and not part of the permanent collection. However, their collection of Asian art (Korean and Chinese, especially), is pretty impressive for a university museum. Like other reviewers have already said, this definitely isn't the Louvre or a national gallery. But if you live in Eugene or happen to be in the area, this museum is certainly worth checking out! After having walked by this museum hundreds of times before on my way to the library, I only wish I had come in sooner. I hope others don't make my same mistake!

Yelp
If you work on campus, this is a wonderful place to linger on your lunch hour. The schnitzer museum rotates the displays several times a year, but the permamanent exhibits never cease to look different and catch your eye each visit. Currently they are showing a cuban avant garde series that is as colorful as a rainforest. Beutiful bright reds, aqua, oranges and yellows. There is a marche cafe there to grab a lunch and enjoy it on the lawn in the sunshine! The gift shop has increible sales and carries items I really don't see elsewhere in town. Especially great for the asian art lovers in your life. If you are a university staff member or a student the admission is free! I have been fortunate to see a Andy Warhol series that came through for one weekend there. Check the website monthly to see what interesting things are happening!

Yelp
I was really impressed with this museum. I figured that in a town the size of Eugene's it wouldn't be all that large of a place. But wow, they had an amazing collection. I had a great time viewing all of them. My favorite pieces were the Russian religious works from the 1500s. Really beautiful. It was the first time I've seen Russian works from that time period in person. I felt that the museum was well laid out and we were lucky enough to be there when they had a Monet on exhibit as well. We practically had the place to ourselves. It was over the university's spring break. Hot tip for you, definitely try to go when the school is on break. The museums on campus stay open and its really quiet. I'd like to go back again someday.

Yelp
I've loved the JSMA since I was a student at U of O. A variety of interesting exhibits and events....including events for kids. The museum is free for students, but there is a fee for the general public. Discounts are offered, including First Friday Free....just check the website. Serious art enthusiasts take note...no Mona Lisa here. And those of you hoping something will come alive at night.....lay off the mushrooms. All in all, it's a great place to spend a quiet afternoon and get a little culture in the process.

Yelp
It is very worthy visiting this museum. There are so many historical staff, such as Chinese pottery in Tang "San cai", Dargon Throne in Qing Dynasty... I love the trip in this museum and I got a lot new thinkings in my brain.

Yelp
Magnificent museum right in the heart of the University of Oregon. Love exploring it!

Yelp
The museum always features something interesting, and the permanent collections are noteworthy. The original part of the building was designed by Ellis F. Lawrence.

Yelp
I went to the JSMA when I first moved to Eugene and loved it! It is such a beautiful and peaceful place to go and relax. The permanent galleries are amazing, and i am always finding something new that I did not see before. I also really enjoy their changing exhibitions. After a few visits, I joined as a member which ended up paying for itself as all my future visits for a year were completely free! And I got notice of all the great events that they offer which allowed me to enjoy the museum even more.

Suzanne R.

Yelp
Stellar collection at the Museum the shows keep getting better. Can't say enough great things about this museum... go to the garden it is amazing...spend some time there. I have seen some beautiful wedding ceremonies done in this garden space.

Ellie K.

Yelp
The JSMA is a wonderful museum! They have a great permanent collection of Asian and American art, but also bring in special exhibitions and long-term loans to showcase works from other cultures. In the largest gallery, a new exhibition is installed every 3 months or so. In the past year the shows have been incredibly diverse, with historical and contemporary exhibits in all media. There is always a free public reception to celebrate the featured exhibitions and the museum stays open late (with music, themed decorations, and really good food!). Currently the exhibition on view is a group show of UO Art Faculty's recent work. I also love that the JSMA has a very active facebook page so I can keep up with all the events happening there and when new exhibitions open.
