Best Seafood Restaurants on Massachusetts’ South Shore and Greater Boston - Eater Boston

"Jo’s Nautical Bar isn’t technically a seafood restaurant — unless you count the shrimp garnish in the bloody mary — but it’s an essential stop in one’s travels around the South Shore; swing by before or after dinner. Located between the U.S. Coast Guard Station Point Allerton and Pemberton Pier, Jo’s is open year-round and holds a special place in the hearts of many lifetime Hullonians. Sipping an ice-cold beer at a reasonable price in the cozy cellar or on the deck overlooking the bay is a South Shore tradition at Hull’s oldest surviving bar, which dates back to 1951. Although this far end of the Hull peninsula may seem hard to reach by car, you’ll find yourself minutes away from this hidden local spot if you visit Hull by the commuter boat that frequently departs for points around Boston Harbor." - Valerie Li Stack

Came here with my wife and sister, always wanted to stop in and see what it was like. The outdoor seating looking over the bay is awesome. The drinks were reasonable and well made. We had margaritas and Gin & tonics. We had a second round and there was a mistake mad in the type of tequila and the bartender couldn't have been nicer as she corrected it. Great service...

Awesome spot with a great view!

Another fabulous slice of heaven. Around for a limited time. Supposed to close next year so get here while you can. Known as the best dive bar in Hull and the only one below sea level. I was promised to be amazed and this place did not disappoint! As my reviews may suggest, I love me a dive bar and this one is a classic. Wish it was here forever but plan on coming back as much as I can until it's gone. Truly phenomenal! Why go to the beach if you could come here? Please see attached photos to see what you're missing or what you're in for

Yelp
Great dive bar on island. This is dark and duvet but the place to be. Local bar with all old time decor. A definite must if visiting the beach

Yelp
Jo's is a landmark in Hull. It's a wonderful place, very relaxed and friendly. The drinks are always generous, and the bartenders are friendly. I love looking at all of the historical nautical decor. Really, the feeling that Jo's elicits is like no other. There's a deck where you can enjoy your drink during nice weather. (Fetch your drinks yourself.) They only have chips, but you can order takeout from a variety of menus. Sometimes they have live music; those nights are very fun. On Sundays they have extraordinary Bloody Mary's.

Yelp
Great dive bar! My husband and I stopped by on a Saturday night before our ferry back to Boston and we had a wonderful time! There was a live band playing and a bunch of locals dancing and living their best life. We got two beers and it only cost us $11! It's a little stuffy inside but they have a lovely patio out back where you can cool off and enjoy the view of the water. This place is cash only bit there is an ATM inside. Will definitely be back if I'm in the area!

Yelp
Don't visit Jo's. Just don't. But if you do, be ready for good drinks, live music, clever decor, friendly conversation, sofas, high tops, low tops, bar stools, a porch with a water view, free wifi, and a couple of televisions broadcasting the big games. Or not, It also has the cleanest bathrooms ever. What more can you ask for in a bar? There's no food, unless you count the Cheetos (two bags for a dollar) or the delivery menus on the bar. Or if you count the Bloody Marys filled with shrimp, celery, green beans, and olives. (If they added bacon, this would be six stars.) Or you could count the locally sourced food -- appetizers brought from home by locals and shared liberally with all. Plenty of parking. A short walk to the Boston/Hingham ferry. A long drive to civilization, but that's part of the charm. At Jo's, someone always says heyhowareya. Even if they don't know your name, they know your drink.

Yelp
We loved this place and had a great time on a recent sunny Sunday afternoon. This bar is located on the far away end of the Hull peninsula and you could very easily miss it altogether as apparently my husband and I have for years even though we live just one town over. It was a friend of ours who mentioned Jo's to us as a place he loved going to which we responded in unison: "where??". Jo's is an unassuming, ocean side bar. A bit out of the way and a bit mysterious almost. Once you walk in you at first go down a step into a large, very dark, cool interior. You can either sit at the bar or in one of the many conversation areas with chairs and sofas. There are stacks of board games if that interests you. But on a sunny afternoon or warm evening, outside is where you want to be. You will find a nautically inspired back deck with high tops and chairs and some sofa seating. No food is served at this bar but they have loads of menus from places that will deliver if you are so inclined to have a snack with your drinks. There is a full bar with cocktails, beer and wine. On the Sunday we were there we ordered Bloody Marys which seemed the perfect afternoon libation. They were delicious...and like anything else a Bloody Mary can go either way such are the many good and bad recipes people use to make one. We loved these. I think with tip the two drink cost us 20 bucks. They included olives, pickled string beans and a shrimp. A meal and a drink in one! The Bloody Mary was pleasantly but not overwhelmingly spicy with no hint of "smoke" which I don't like. The outdoor area was busy but not packed and we got seats on the comfy sofa. The crowd was friendly and we struck up a conversation with two tables full of bikers who were out for a Sunday ride up from Marshfield who stopped in for a beer and chat. If sitting outside, you order your drinks at the bar and wait for them so you can serve yourself outside. It seems that there is no outside table service. Be warned this is a cash only place. We can't wait to go back again and can't believe that in all the years we've lived in the environs we have never been here. That will be rectified! I was shockingly without my phone (and hence no camera) so I have no photos for you. But just get yourself there and you won't be disappointed. It is off the beaten track for most. If you've come to Nantasket to go to beach, go for a drink later on...just keep driving down further into Hull and you'll find it. Maybe.

Yelp
My first impression was that I was in the bar from Top Gun except instead of supporting Navy fighter pilots, it's the Coast Guard. (As it should be given the proximity to the USCG station). This is a great find with a salt of the earth clientele. Drinks are reasonably priced and mixed well. Don't expect anything too fancy... your typical well with mixers and some premium labels. Hipsters may struggle a bit. Clean, well run and a proper dive bar that is so much more.

Yelp
Had my friend in town from New York this weekend. I know she fancies a good dive, and after a few hours at the beach I just knew I had to bring her to Jo's. As we walked into the dark bar on a sunny afternoon, we both felt transported back to 1978 with the furniture, bar accents and all of the regulars bellying up to the no-frills bar. My friend loved it, and raved on how clean the bar was despite looking like a relic of bars past. We had a few beers and went on our way, but man I love this place! Cash only!

Yelp
Jo's Nautical isn't a pub, for one thing they don't serve food. The proper name is Jo's Nautical Bar that's what the sign says and they have hats with "Bar" not "Pub" (Yelp should fix that). They do have a an excellent location and the entrance is subterranean. The bar is long is shallow on the ends. The game is on the TV's and they have board games for patrons. The floor is a simple concrete poor, it is enhances it's Bat Cave like decor. Away from the bar there are cozy alcove seats. JNB has many charms but for those of you drink at the altar of the Bloody Mary, you are in for a treat. It's a wonderful cocktail layered with celery, with crisp green beans, and the small olives with pimento. It has just the right amount of horseradish and seasonings with a shrimp. It is my new favorite. BM. * plenty of parking off season * you can bring in food * wallet nice * very chill vibe * in the season the outside seating * location, location, location...

Yelp
Great Ocean side pub, I stop by when ever I can. Super friendly bar tenders and patrons, prices are good, ocean side deck and bar area decor are really fun, bathrooms are spotless, no food but, plenty of delivery menus are on the bar, plenty of parking. Opens at 4:00pm, I think.

Yelp
I was a bit hesitant to leave a five star review of Jo's, only because I don't want more folks finding this hidden gem. It's getting too damn crowded. Last of the true "townie" bars here in Hull, you can come for the nautical basement ambiance, the friendly patrons, the attentive bartenders, the reasonably priced drinks, or the live music heard almost nightly. Love this place. You know, on second thought... stay away.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and great bloody Mary's on Sundays. They do not serve food but the drinks are great. The deck is very nice on a hot day with a great view, however the bartender has a horrible attitude and hates bartending so beware.

Yelp
One of the best bars on the east coast, for that matter the Spanish Main (all be it the northern Spanish Main). Honest service. Drinks, cold beer. A view out the rear window that makes you feel like you are in a pill box (extra points if you know what that is) a deck, private, cigars? Bring your own. Reminds me of Uncle Frank wearing plaid pants. I think this place could with stand a couple of shells from the 16" guns on the deck of the Missouri. Did I say one of the best bars? In serious contention for the best bar.

Yelp
Great bar! Hang on the couches and watch TV like you are in your basement family room or hang on the deck and watch the boats go through Hull Gut. Worth the trip on a Sunday afternoon for the best Bloody Mary I've ever had. They don't serve food but with all the garnishes on the Bloody, you will feel full after you've had two. Check their facebook page for live entertainment.

Yelp
Exactly what it should be. Great local/dive bar. Order pizza/subs from one of the local establishments. Outside patio is perfect. Will be back

Yelp
I want to give it one star..... So we get to keep this place to ourselves. But I took My Yelp oath so I can not tell a lie. You will probably never find a place like this again. Certainly not in our increasingly Gentrified, outrageously priced real estate market. The people and atmosphere are the most genuine authentic cast of characters you will encounter. every walk of life, oceanfront working port, etc... enjoy it while it lasts and let us all hope it never ends !!!!

Yelp
The bartender Donna is amazing the best bar hand in the state by a MILE. Great spot right on the water. A hidden gem. Drink prices are reasonable.

Yelp
This spot is amazing. Strong, inexpensive drinks. Bizarre basement feel with plenty of resin, bottle, cap tables. A large patio overlooking the water. This spot is not very stylish or quaint but it is awesome. Oh - and they have a cork dart board to boot!
google avatar

Jack M.

Yelp
over priced drinks. no food, no handicapped bathrooms, bad reception on tv. cash only, patio tables full of empty drink glasses no one cleans up. view of water blocked off when sitting, sitting in a basement, so you sit in your basement at home? I didn't think so, not going to go out and sit in someone else's basement. Hull cops waiting to give you a dui on the long drive out of there.
google avatar

Chris L.

Yelp
Dropped in on a whim and glad we did. A basement bar that has tons of maritime character, cheap drinks, rustic local feel, great music and nice folks. We love to hit this place up on a Sunday to enjoy some "Sunday Funday" along with live music. Have not eaten there yet, but should try it soon. This place is definitely not a chain. Definitely worth the trip if you want a very local, easy going place for a beverage. Arghhh!

Yelp
So I've been to Nantasket beach a million times, but never stayed at the resort there and thought it was a perfect time to go before the season got busy. I looked up bars in the area and came across Jo's Nautical seeming right up my alley. Let me tell you that I didn't realize it was quite a drive through what seemed like miles of suburban housing and no civilization in sight. Then our uber drops us off at what seems to be someone's house that's having a party in the basement. We were both hesitant to go into this place and man I am glad we did. Everyone knew eachother, they were all having so much fun. It was casual, quirky, and homey and the live entertainment was so great. We also had trouble getting home because uber does not want to go all the way out there and the bartender, blonde and very nice gave us a number to a company that came to get us. The best part was, everyone in the bar offered to try and find us a way home. All in all, great night and great bad but I agree that if I lived there I wouldn't want anyone finding out about this gem!

Yelp
Worth the drive out there. If there were good food options, the place would be 5 stars. Great atmosphere and location. It's like a combination between a ships hold and your living room. Good beer selection. Cash only is a drawback, but it's still a great spot.

Michael H.

Yelp
What an undiscovered gem. As another review states if this place were in Boston... It's not, it's way out at the end of Hull, and at Golden Hour in the Summer the patio is a lot like sitting out at a Caribbean bar on your favorite Island. Low prices only makes it better. Try it out.

Heather B.

Yelp
Great spot! You can chill on couches and play board games, belly up to the bar and chat with the great bartenders, sit on the deck and watch the coast guard boats do their thing- just a fun, local place to hang for adults of any age. Even saw a fantastic Latin Blues fusion band (CDE) and danced there last week! No food, but they are cool with you ordering from local takeout spots nearby. Cash only, but there's an ATM. The decor is so eclectic and kitsch, if this place was in Boston it would be THE hipster place to be.
