Josh Groban on Becoming a Wine Nerd and His New Role in ‘Sweeney Todd’ | Eater

"A California winery that partnered with musician Josh Groban to launch “Joshgiving,” a seasonal initiative encouraging acts of gratitude ahead of Thanksgiving and supporting community through food, wine, and art. The collaboration included a $100,000 donation to arts nonprofit Sing for Hope and highlights the winery’s role in Groban’s approach to wine-and-food pairings—he specifically reaches for their cabernet for special-occasion dinners and cites conversations with their winemaker, Joseph Carr, as part of his learning. Framed as a way to reconnect people after the isolation of the pandemic, the partnership emphasizes accessible, enjoyable wines that pair with home-cooked meals rather than snobbish wine culture." - Amy McCarthy

In my travels and my limited vineyard visits, my two favorite wine tasting experiences have been when I pull up to the vineyard and there’s not another car there. They were also both recommended by locals before I book them. One was in Montalcino, Italy, and the other one was in Calistoga California. Joseph Cellars is the second one. Coincidentally it’s also one of two vineyards where I did a visit and the owner of himself (and his wife(owner also) and his mother in law) not only said hello, but also talk with me and poured me a little bit of wine from one of their favorite bottles as well. If that’s not enough to get you to visit this place and consider becoming a member, I’m not sure what will be. Timmy was our wine guide on this particular Saturday, and Maddy booked us. It was a last-minute booking and I was so thankful that they had room. What a wonderful experience going all the way back in the cave around a dimly lit table while enjoying food and wine. Timmy was very knowledgeable not only about the wine, but also about the area, which was very helpful as we took his restaurant recommendation for that evening and canceled our other one (goose and Gander in Saint Helena). Give this place a try. You won’t be disappointed.

If you want a very personable and memorable experience at a winery - this is the place to go!! Marie was our tour guide and I cannot say enough GREAT things about her and the experience she gave us at Joseph Cellars! We visited 2 other wineries in the area and Joseph’s was BY FAR the best place. Marie took the time to show us the ins and outs of the caves and barrel holding areas, taught us about the process to make the wines and even how they made the corks all while giving us her extensive knowledge about everything there is to know about wine! Highly recommend Marie and Joseph Cellars to anyone visiting the area.

Joseph Cellars Winery offers a truly unique and memorable experience. A reservation is a must, but it’s well worth it. One of the highlights is their wine cave, you get to explore it and enjoy your wine in such a cool, atmospheric setting. The staff are incredibly knowledgeable and passionate, making the tasting both educational and enjoyable. The wines themselves are exceptional, and the entire experience feels special and well-curated. If you’re looking for a standout winery visit, this is the place to go!

We recently had a terrific tasting at Joseph and highly recommend a visit. We made reservations for a tasting on a recent Monday in June. Our host Timmy called in the morning to let us know the group before us had cancelled so he was flexible on timing, which we appreciated. When we got there, we found out we were the only visitors until late in the day (that's the good thing about Mondays!) so Timmy offered to move the tasting outside so we could enjoy the beautiful weather, a great suggestion. The tasting itself was great; Timmy had lots of useful and interesting info to share about each of the wines we had, and we really enjoyed each one (and bought several bottles). We did the experience with the paired bites of food, and it was interesting to see how the food changed the wine flavor. And since it was only us, Timmy was able to sit with us and we had a fun and wide ranging conversation that only added to the experience! We also were lucky enough to meet the winemaker Al on our way in, and the owner Joe on the way out. We have visited many dozens of wineries now all over California and this is easily one of our top 2 or 3 experiences. Definitely recommend!

Google
Amazing experience with Marie! 10/10 recommend especially if you love red wine their wine is amazing. Ask for Marie if you can she was very educated on the wine and super friendly. Loved it!

Google
We came to this place on Sunday around 2 p.m to try their wine recommended by our friend. He said that it was amazing experience for him some time ago but we have turned around because this place works by reservations only. We asked if we can buy a bottle of wine and stay there the answer was no! We spend 35 min to get there and we got no service! Thanks, never come back again

Google
Amazing wine tasting experience - the space, the wine (La Sirena), and the host, David, were all tops! Can’t recommend highly enough - wine tasting at another level! 🧜🏼‍♀️ 10 stars!

Yelp
Such an amazing wine spot. Marie was amazing. Would give more stars if I could. The cave was beautiful and cool. The experience of the employees made the experience.

Yelp
This is a must do winery while in Calistoga. Marie is the best. Ask for her for your tour you won't be disappointed. FABULOUS FABULOUS FABULOUS

Yelp
Went to 4 wineries for tastings during a family trip to Napa. Joseph Cellars was by far the best. Exceptional service from our tour guide, Timmy. We got to tour the cave as well as conduct our tasting experience inside of it. Timmy gave incredible descriptions of notes we should have tasted in each wine. The small bites provided accented each wine beautifully. Thank you for the incredible service and hospitality, Timmy. The property itself is so beautiful and welcoming. We highly recommend a tasting/tour here!

Yelp
A beautiful winery with delicious wine & Marie was a gem!! She's extremely knowledgeable and fun! Our group had an excellent time here.

Chris H.

Yelp
We loved everything about this unique cave experience. Marie is an awesome guide, her depth of knowledge was incredible, she answered every question we had. We joined the club so we can continue to enjoy this wine from the Carolinas.

Yelp
The wine was delicious and the views were beautiful! The most relaxing tasting experience club joined

Yelp
This is a belated review of Joseph Cellars Winery in Calistoga, where I had a reservation for my group of 15 girlfriends for a 40th milestone birthday in Napa. For my milestone birthday I was looking for a boutique winery that had cave tours. Joseph Cellars not only had a beautiful rustic winery and grounds, they had a large cave where their wines were made and stored. And my group got a private tour of the cave! When my group arrived, we were seated in the library past the main tasting room. The library had sofas and chairs, plenty of space for 15. The gentleman who hosted our group was welcoming and a great story teller. He pointed the wines from the tasting menu, took group photos, and gave us a lovely tour of Joseph Cellar's cafes. Sadly, I can't remember his name but he was great! After the cave tour my group had down time to hang out, talk, and drink more wine in the library. I loved the private setting. Thank you Joseph Cellars Winery team and our host for welcoming and accommodating my group of 15 for a milestone birthday! I am so grateful they welcomed our group; as many wineries in Napa Valley are still not accommodating larger groups in the pandemic. Highly recommend if you are looking to book a large group for wine tasting and cave tours at a gorgeous boutique winery in Calistoga!

Yelp
We went with a group of friends for wine tasting experience and the wine was delicious. The scenery was spectacular and had the opportunity to do the cave tour. The staff was incredibly friendly and the service exceeded my expectations. We will be back.

Yelp
This has been our favorite winery we visited so far! The wine and food pairings were all outstanding and the cave is magnificent. I loved every wine and loved how they gave each person a detailed sheet of the wine and it's food pairing, but had a space for notes so we could record our thoughts for each pairing. Beautiful space. Ended up buying a few bottles of wine to take home too. They have a sweet cellar cat who is so friendly.

Yelp
The highlight of my Napa trip! The tasting was exceptional! The wine was perfect and Timmy went above and beyond to ensure that I had a great birthday experience (mission accomplished) and I can't wait to return! The selections of wine were perfect! There's not one I didn't like. Sure, I had preferences (Cabernets and the Pinot noir were my favorite), but they were all wonderful. The rose was a pleasant surprise because I typically do not care for rose. The cave experience was like no other and the property is bougie, yet comfortable and cozy at the same time. I can't wait to return! Please support this winery. You will not be disappointed.

Grady R.

Yelp
Great experience. Wine is awesome. Staff is wonderful! Try a tasting in the cave or enjoy the views from the outdoor patio.

Keya W.

Yelp
If I could give this snobby place a zero I would. No good. I just visited last week and they treat you horrible plus the wine is no good. Luckily Girard Winery and V. Sattui Winery saved our trip. Save your money and visit Girard Winery, V. Sattui Winery, Prager Port Works & Winery, or Castello di Amorosa.

Yelp
A Calistoga Must! Joseph's Winery was one of the most unique and excellent wine tastings we've had! The vineyard is so welcoming- a true family operation. The wines are amazing and the tasting rooms and cave are stunning. Keagan, our host (also the operations manager) really made our group feel like VIP's, as did the owner, Joe and his beautiful wife and children. The wine was exceptional (that might explain the case I bought and why I joined the club) as was their hospitality. Our group was a little naughty towards the end (a little on the loud side), but we were never rushed out. Fun tips- Book a cave tour- so fun! Try Yoga and Bubbles on Sunday mornings @ 9. $20 with the class + champagne after or COMPLIMENTARY if you're a club member. The bonus is the wine cats that wonder by as your doing yoga poses. The custom cheese here is amazing!!!

Yelp
Our first time visiting Napa and this was our first winery, it was a great experience! When scheduling our tasting Maddie was extremely friendly, helpful, knowledgeable, and accommodating. This was not my experience with other wineries while scheduling tastings so this made me even more excited about our visit to Joseph Cellars. At our tasting Timmy, our host was welcoming, fun, and knowledgeable. The atmosphere was cozy and charming as it is a smaller winery, which made it personal. Each wine we tasted was different but wonderful in its own unique way. We are primarily red drinkers but we surprisingly enjoyed their whites also. We joined their wine club and look forward to reliving the experience at home and returning again soon in the near future.

Yelp
Wonderful little winery with good wines. Make sure you make reservations for tastings as it is required and well worth it! I will be bringing friends to this spot for tastings and the view.

Yelp
I couldn't believe that I joined a wine club, however after tasting the wines at Joseph Cellars Winery - I was hooked. In fact, there was another couple with VGP and I on this trip and we both joined the club. We had tastings of quite a few wines and even had a barrel tasting. There was only one wine that I truly did not like the taste of (interestingly enough this was Joe's personal favorite). The delivery of my wine has since arrived and I've opened one bottle - a 2012 Chardonnay and it was as tasty here as it was when visiting the winery. Joe calls this boat wine - I liked his take on 'neighbor wine' as well. I bought two late wines and can't wait to open those up! The experience of meeting Joe and Hannah was fantastic. I think I teared up when Joe shared a personal story of when his dream of owning a winery came true. We are already planning on going back to Napa in September and we will be sure to stop in to Joseph Cellars again.

Yelp
Gorgeous venue, breathtaking views, handsome staff & great wine! I mean what more could you ask for? Tastings are by appointment only so be sure to call ahead as much as you can. Beautiful wine cave to tour. Must check out his spot!

Yelp
My husband and I had a very enjoyable tasting experience at Joesph Cellars. Although it was a hefty tasting fee ($100 each) it was worth it. We were greeted with a glass of Rose and enjoyed that while overlooking views of the vineyard. Next we went into the wine cave for a quick tour. Our tasting consisted of wines paired with a small bite of food. For example the sauvignon blanc was paired with an apricot with goat cheese & honey. All the wines were stellar and the experience was relaxed, comfortable and informative. I would recommend a visit to this winery!

Brandon R.

Yelp
Without question, best possible experience in Napa. Ron was amazing, the owner, Joseph, was onsite and VERY interactive. Quality wines, excellent experience, off the charts service with selection and quality. If you don't visit this one in Napa, you're missing out.
google avatar

Jennifer M.

Yelp
Very Disappointing! If you are going to charge $60 per person for tasting, it better be good. They do not waive tasting with a purchase and only tasted 5 wines. The wine was not bad, it was just not worth a $60 tasting. Known for their cabs we didn't even get to taste a cab. The experience was just okay as well. If you are on the fence with this one..... I would pass! So many more places to visit with exceptional wine and experience for less $

Yelp
Wow! Wow! Wow! What a time! First off I'd like to thank Maddie for the amazing experience with the wine tasting! She was absolutely fantastic and very knowledgeable! Beautiful scenery as you pull up to the winery and you start your way from the entrance through the vineyard to the top. Greeted with glasses of wine and a smile makes you feel quite taken care of and appreciated. We strolled into the caves to examine the process of wine making along with the storage of the barrels. We then make our way back to the main building to start our tasting. Now neither myself or my wife (on our honeymoon) are experienced at all in the wine industry. Maddie was very kind and answered all our questions we had. This was my first tasting and it was absolutely amazing! I highly recommend anyone in the area of Calistoga to take a look at some beautiful scenery along with some very amazing wines! We even tasted the grapes straight from the vine!! We will definitely be back in the near future! Once again I want to say Maddie was an excellent host and she made our experience exceed our expectations!! Thank you Joesph Cellars winery y'all are a top notch crew!

Yelp
Made a reservation for the wrong day and they were able to accommodate us anyway. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. Enjoyed sitting outside on the nice day in a quaint area. Wines of every price point

Yelp
A great find in Napa wine country, time spent here was a definite highlight of our trip to Napa. Ron in the tasting room was enthusiastic, accommodating and knowledgeable about the product. They have great pride in their product and it shows. Unique cave tasting is a must. Although not cheap, their wines are all complex, unique and memorable. Of course I bought a case and joined the wine club. Now that I'm home, my only regret is that I didn't spring for two cases!

Yelp
These guys Joe and Ron are the best! They treat me so well when I come in. This would be my second visit and they definitely make me feel welcomed and are just pleasantly nice people who accommodated me on both visits. I actually have told a few people about this particular Winery and spoke very highly of them just because it's just a really intimate experience, no pressure into buying anything just a real chill environment... Thanks, I always leave happy and excited!

Yelp
Let me just start by saying that this place was beyond incredible! My husband and I have a 1 1/2 year old daughter and this was our first trip away from her... it did not disappoint! We made an appointment for a private wine tasting and Keagan was our host. He was extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and definitely showed us a good time! He started by giving us a few wine tastings in the main building, then took us into the cave where we sat one-on-one and enjoyed more wine and some of the best cheeses I have ever tasted (never knew I could like cheese as much as I liked wine). Keagan took his time with us and was very thorough in answering all of our questions (we know absolutely nothing about wine). The cave is a MUST SEE! It was such a wonderful experience and loved how private and intimate this tour was. After we finished our tastings, my man and I were on our way to another winery but decided to cancel and stay at Joseph Cellars because it was just too good. Luckily we did! Joe, the owner, and his friends came to the winery and we ended up talking and drinking with them all night. I don't think another winery could ever top this experience! We left with 4 bottles of phenomenal wine, a nice little buzz, and an awesome memory of our first trip away together. Thank you Joseph Cellars! We will be back next year!

Yelp
Fantastic winery with amazing wines. Ron and Maddie took great care of us! You must stop here and have a taste.

Yelp
Wow. Beautiful family, fabulous wine, amazing experience! You won't want to leave!

Sarah T.

Yelp
Our favorite winery :) The wines are delicious, the cave is incredible, and the staff are friendly and just a treat to hang out with. We've been members for a few years and love bringing friends and family for tastings. The events they host are super fun. Maddie, Ron, Janelle, Keegan, Joe have all been lovely hosts over the years!

Peter C.

Yelp
Simply a fantastic way to begin our day! Ron our host was fantastic, the wines were even better and it was nice to walk the caves. Strong reviews on the Zinfandel and petit sirah! Our best stop of the day!
google avatar

Kimberly B.

Yelp
We called Jospeh cellars last minute to accommodate us, a party of 10! We showed up and not only was the wine excellent but Ron's hospitality was over the top. We did not feel rushed or hurried. He took his time with us and we loved the experience. We will be back again!
google avatar

Raphael P.

Yelp
We had an awesome time at the cave. Very friendly people and great wine. The best white wines we had in a long time in this area. Looking forward to our next visit.

Yelp
What a gem - we discovered this place serendipitously and immediately fell in love with their wines and their team. We're proud members and always love coming back with close friends and family. Highly recommended!

Yelp
This is a hidden gem.... new to the scene but they have some amazing wines! 2012 Can Blend.... do it!! Cave area is where you want to be tasting.... and Rick is the best!! Fun time, quick with jokes and very knowledgeable! Enjoy and wow... what a view!!!

Tami M.

Yelp
This is a special place! Large tasting bar, large seated tasting room with comfy couches, a wine cave with tasting areas, an old truck that houses a pizza oven, and out of this world delicious and affordable wine!
google avatar

Shannon W.

Yelp
This was our favorite winery!! The grounds, the cave, Joe & Ron, the cheese, the friendliness, and definitely the wine!!! You MUST visit this winery when going to Napa. I would like to visit different wineries each time I go to Napa, but this is one I will visit again! The overall experience is amazing!! Great job Joseph!!

Yelp
I've been coming to Napa since the 80's and this year, we came upon Joseph Cellars. We met Ace and Joe at a wine tasting at the Wine Country Inn and immediately hit it off with these guys. We bought their delightful zin and enjoyed it with our dinner at Cook that night in St. Helena. The next day, we drove up to their winery which is under construction and were treated to a fun tour with tastings in their newly mined caves and soon to be tasting room. What a refreshing Napa experience! Great wine! Great people! It'll be fun to watch it all come together. We're looking forward to going back in 2013 when it's all completed.
google avatar

Shannon W.

Yelp
AMAZING TIME! This stop wasn't even on our agenda for the day and it ended up being my favorite. Everyone was so nice and made you feel so welcome! Beautiful wine and establishment.
google avatar

Lady N.

Yelp
Ok I've done way too many five star reviews but they all truly deserve it. Especially Joseph Cellars. This is going to be amazing when construction is finished. Every wine was unique and well crafted. Rick gave us a tour of the whole facility. Visit this when it opens to the public!

Neil C.

Yelp
This place is fantastic, the wines are great but by far the best thing here is Ron! He is the star of Joseph Cellars! I couldn't recommend this place enough just make sure you do your tour and tasting with Ron
google avatar

Roxane O.

Yelp
Joseph Cellars is in a great location, has wonderful wines. Can't wait for the tasting room to open. You can see it will be beautiful to reflect the warmth of the winery. The caves are incredible. This will be one of my favs.

Kjeld J.

Yelp
FANTASTIC wines and a home run presentation by Joe, Nicole and team. Can't wait till this place open and I look forward to have a cozy time at Joseph Cellars Winery, Meantime, I will enjoy my purchased Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 Kjeld Jensen San Francisco, CA
google avatar

Lora D.

Yelp
This is the kind of winery that makes you feel as though you never left home. In fact, you may just want to call this your home! Between the hospitality, delicious wines, and an extremely beautiful landscape you may just linger a little while longer. They are still under construction but seem as though they'd be happy to give a tour and share their wines with you just like family. I do have to say their zin is my all time favorite and before trying theirs I have never been a zin fan so that's saying a lot! A little heads up....keep an eye out for their late harvest wine....they're not sure how they're going to package it yet, but whatever bottle it may come in it is delicious and perfect for holidays and parties. This winery hasn't even opened to the public yet and it's considered one of our favorites!
google avatar

Rick H.

Yelp
I have visited JC on a couple of occasions and both times the experience was wonderful. Got to meet the owner and tasted wines with the GM Graham, great time and wonderful wines. The zin with all it's flavor has to be one of my favorites. Can't wait for the tasting room to be complete, but tasting in the caves was great. This place will be top notch for the upper valley....should be in full operation in the next few months, but you can call for an appointment. Thanks to Joseph and Graham.

Peter J.

Yelp
Had my first wine tasting in the caves. The wines are amazing! The winery is still under construction, but Joe, Nicole and team did a fantastic job showing us around and letting us taste their wonderful wines. This place is going to be sooooo cool and popular once they're done.

Sandra J.

Yelp
A must stop in Napa. Ace was amazingly. This is a must stop. Please be sure to make an appointment. After visiting we ended up buying the wine package in which we get their signature wine twice a year. We are not that type of couple. It was the wine. This is a small winery that gave us 100% attention. We were even fortunate enough to see then wine making process. Be sure to visit the wine cave, a must upgrade.

M B.

Yelp
Cannot say enough about Joe and Joseph Cellars. We stopped by yesterday on a lark and had the best time ever. Joe took us on an extensive walk around the grounds after which we sampled his wines and of course anyone who has had his wines knows how good they are. We took 4 home and joined the wine club. Many thanks to Joe and Nicole (who we talked to over the phone). We are SOOO looking forward to many events in the future as club members. Thanks Joe and remember, if you need an Irish Traditional Band for any of your events.....

Jamie L.

Yelp
Great location, great people, great wine! This was our first trip to Napa and our visit to Joseph Cellars was the highlight of the trip. Joe, the owner, treated us to a wine tasting and tour of his tasting room and caves. Joe shared his passion and enthusiasm with us. They are close to being completed and I can only imagine how nice it will be once they are done. Just as importantly, the wine was delicious!

Leif P.

Yelp
Still under construction but that did not stop Joe and assoc. of giving us an extensive tour of what looks like will become a first class stop on the wine trail. exquisite wines and great looking facilities.
