I'm of two minds about it after my initial visit: there are some really good things, and some things about which I'm not a fan at all.
Start with the good: the tacos themselves, that I had, were very, very good, especially the proteins themselves. I had 4 "premium" tacos, which is to say: $3 each, plus tax. I had 3 Al Pastor, and 1 Steak, traditional style (grilled corn tortillas with cilantro and onions), and I must say: they tasted really, really good. The Al Pastor tacos could rival those at Taqueria Alameda in Westland, they were that good. They might not *topple* the king, but they'd be right in the thick of the fight.
Too, the steak taco was impressive, especially due to the quality of the protein: this was a much-better-than-I'm-used-to steak quality in that taco, and the taste bore that out. The beef flavor and the spicing were really, really good. The grilled onions that came with the tacos went well with either kind of taco, but I paired most of it with the Al Pastors. Of the two, I think the Al Pastor edged the Steak, but that Steak taco was very good...better than I had anticipated.
Service was pretty good and prompt, by nice women in a hot little kitchen. Bless them for working in a place that the A/C needs some work.
So why not five stars? Well, price plays into it some (that's a pretty pricy lunch for four tacos at about $15 or so out the door), the lack of A/C plays into it some (as does the general rundown-ness of the facility itself) and the lack of facilities, but the really big knock on the place:
Their pico de gallo is very expensive, and it is *LOUSY*. It's a darned shame, because it *looks* good in the tiny, not-filled-up 2 oz. container they issue to you for $.50 more, and even if it were good, it wouldn't really be enough except for one taco. But that's the biggest issue, though: the pico de gallo is pretty stinking *awful*, with way, way, *WAY* too much salt in the marinade, killing any and all other, lighter, more acidic tastes that the lime, tomato, onion, and cilantro are supposed to be providing. I am a Certified Pico Freak, and this pico de gallo pulls up the rear...it's lousy, and that's a major sin to me.
Having said that: I'll be back for those tacos, I think. I really do want a better place to eat them in, a more comfortable place/facility, but the food itself, minus that ridiculously bad pico, is quite good. I didn't get beans and rice because, well...I just don't much care about those, but the Al Pastor and Steak both pass muster, for certain. I'd also like to try the (slightly cheaper) ground beef in the future.
Know that it's a bit expensive for what you get, and that the place itself isn't anything great to eat in, and that you can just completely bypass getting pico de gallo, and you're probably in for some good stuff.
It surprises me that they made such bad pico de gallo, but got the rest of the food so very good. That's...strange. Oh, well: I guess you can't have everything.
