Beverly Hills Restaurant, Joss Bites, Looks Like a Spaceship Commissary | Eater LA

"I see Joss Cuisine as the sister restaurant to Joss Bites and a newer take on the now‑shuttered original Joss; it is also located on S. Santa Monica Boulevard." - Farley Elliott

Google
Excellent food and very welcoming staff. Best Chinese food I’ve had in LA

Kely L.

Google
Small, exclusive, with the best Chinese haute cuisine you will ever experience in Los Angeles. Owner Cecile Tang is a legend in her own right, and Joss is a landmark and destination point for those wanting the best of the best.

Google
Ordered delivery through DoorDash... special instruction are not accepted via the DoorDash app. When I call the restaurant to let them know about my nut allergy, the person answered the call was rude and simply hurried me off the call. I did receive the delivery; food was fine but will not return for the service.

Google
excellent quality food - super friendly service - would recommend to anyone who wants good Chinese food in Beverly Hills

Food is amazing, tried several new things like the eggplant chips, WOW! Crazy good

Yelp
The food was good. Ordered Shrimp dumpling and, Pork dumpling. Crispy eggplant was not crispy at all and, had a bitter taste. We also ordered crispy fish which was nice. The Shrimp fried rice was dry but, our server was kind and, made us a new one. Reason for four stars is Our server was by himself the resturant was busy. He did not have time to come back to ask if we needed more water. Also I did not like the fact that there was a small bug in my plate just as I sat down. It would be nice if they could remove the oil spsots from the chair coushins. Good luck if you can find street parking.

Yelp
I found Joss Cuisine on open table while looking for a unique restaurant for Valentine's Day! Upon arrival, it was a full restaurant. Very small restaurant however they have different sections and felt more comfortable in the seating area we were placed. We weren't greeted right away due to them being SO busy however, once we were greeted the staff was very apologetic about the wait and asked for our patience due to a busy night. I appreciated that it was acknowledged bc we also had a reservation. I like the menu and we ordered the wonton soup, hot and sour soup, pineapple wok fried rice, Mongolian beef and long beans. Everything was enjoyed however my boyfriend didn't enjoy the hour and sour soup so it was swapped for the wonton. The wonton soup was yummy. The only thing that I would've adjusted was the heat of the food. Everything except for the soup was just warm. The servers were hospitable and made sure that we had a great experience. We will return for a second visit. If you're looking for an intimate lunch or dinner date this is your place.

Yelp
This is my go to Chinese restaurant when I am in the area. I don't know why it's never too busy. I have been here at least 20 times and I enjoyed every dish I had here. Great: Clean and delicious Great lunch special Friendly and professional service Interesting space-ship like decor Clean bathroom Not so great: Wine and drink menu My favorite dishes are Hot and Sour Soup, Mongolian Lamb, and Mustard Prawns

Yelp
We went to Joss specifically for the Peking duck which had been recommended to us by a friend, and it did not disappoint! It was probably the best duck we have ever had. The skin was super crispy, the meat was plentiful, moist and not at all fatty, the pancakes were thin and held together well, and the plum sauce was tasty. The half portion is enough for 2 people if you order a couple other dishes with it. We also had the shrimp dumplings off the dim sum menu, and the shrimp inside was a bit overcooked but still tasty. The pineapple fried rice was bland and I'd probably skip that next time. The restaurant is divided into 3 noncontiguous sections, as if it had started in one place and then expanded several times. We were seated in a room that looked like a spaceship with bolted on black wall panels, and a circular ceiling with many paper lanterns hanging down. At first it felt very strange but we warmed up to it. The atmosphere is casual, and the service was ok. Perfect for a weekday dinner.

Yelp
Perhaps one of the more authentic Chinese restaurants around. Quite small maybe a bit too much so. Beer, wine and sake, along with teas sodas and such. We like the smaller dishes, more on the order of dim sum . Lots to like on the menu for sure I think I personally prefer lunch over dinner, service runs hot and cold but they try.Btw parking can be challenging and that's why 4

Yelp
Amazing food and service ! The best in the area! Lobster with rice noodles are top notch!

Kevin C.

Yelp
The ginger-vinegar cod was so good, I was torn between two choices, to lick the plate... or to pretend I have manners. lol

Doreen K.

Yelp
I was turned off when I first walked in and found a fly in my plate. I did not like the fact that the seat cushions were spotted with food. When I asked the server for a wet nap he obliged by giving me a wet paper napkin. Food ok nothing great.

Nicole G.

Yelp
May be the best Chinese food in Beverly Hills. Much better than the competitor. The quality is great- food comes out hot and fresh. Wontons in spicy sauce Spicy prawn Soup dumplings Eggplant chips All unbelievable. Glad I walked in here and will be back
google avatar

Annie Z.

Yelp
Food is fine but service needs serious attention. Mediocre Chinese food serving West LA; for the premium price, the restaurant should at least provide attentive service.
google avatar

Stephen E.

Yelp
I love this place. Upscale Chinese food and a chill atmosphere. Just did a fam dinner here and we were all so happy afterwards! You must get their Peking duck. If you're really going for it, they do lobster super well too. Mustard prawns might be the best dish! Start with shrimp toast and eggplant chips--great first bites. Shout out to Walter for being an attentive server as always!

Yelp
Enjoyed a lovely evening with friends at Joss Cuisine! It was my first time here, my friend reserved a room up stairs which had its own bathroom. Highly recommend if you have a large party. The food was excellent and the service was as well! There were several courses, all of which were great! A few stand outs were the squash crab soup and the Lobster. Both are a must next time you go. Great way to celebrate Chinese New Year! Thanks Joss! Parking: street, metered

Yelp
A hidden gem in Beverly Hills!! The Peking duck is a must have!!! The skin is so crispy and love the wrap. The mustard prawns with noodles is also very good. Actually, everything on the menu is good. Please ask for Walter, he is so nice and very attentive. Plenty of street parking along Santa Monica Blvd.

Yelp
All was good, a favorite restaurant of ours for decades. Always an enjoyable meal and high quality ingredients.

Yelp
JC is a cute little Chinese restaurant on little Santa Monica Blvd across from the Penninsula Hotel. We ordered the chop suey, chicken cashew veggies, wonton soup and Hot n sour soup. The food was made fresh and taste GREAT!! We opted out onions and garlic to taste the real food. Restaurants these days are smart now, since people today love to eat onions and garlic, so chefs now would just soak everything in onions and garlic to cover up the unfreshness of the food. Lucky for me that I don't like onions and garlic, so if the food is not fresh, they can't hide!! A big thumbs up for JC, the food was awesome and the service was great. It was a busy night with a party upstairs, but they managed well!!

Cynthia J.

Yelp
Delicious overall, the pecking duck stands out. Service always nice too Sonoma Chardonnay by the glass nice pairing

Yelp
Kinda secret gem on Lil' Santa Monica. They really struggled the last couple of years with hours and responsiveness, but they'd stepped it up and are much more prompt and helpful. Price is a tad steep, but what do you expect around here, especially for this good of quality? More folks in Century City should give this spot a change.

Stephan S.

Yelp
Great tiny restaurant with exquisite food. My favorite is the duck. A must have. Tucker away on little Santa Monica between Beverly Hills and Santa Monica across the peninsula hotel.

Yelp
They are the only restaurant I know of that makes the Peking Turkey for Thanksgiving. Paid for pre sliced and told it would be fresh and warm and skin crispy when I arranged for my 12 noon pick up. Opened it up right when we got home 15 minutes later and thought I had received the wrong order as this looked like just a regular roasted Turkey. What a disappointment! I can't believe I paid $90 for this turkey. The sticky rice was good. The pancakes are the flour kind that taste like a flour tortilla, too thick and dry. Luckily I bought extra think crepe pancakes from the Chinese market in the frozen section that are exceptional. Part of my problem with the turkey besides it lookin like you regular roasted Turkey, the skin was soggy and soft (reconstituted in the air fryer) and the way this turkey was carved was all thick and chunky which does not honor the Peking experience. The turkey should have been carved thin to match the crepes. Never again. Can literally roast a turkey at home the same way and get all accoutrements. If you are Chinese, you can definitely do this. I'm kind of embarrassed as a Chinese American that I fell for this.

Vat T.

Yelp
Food is premade, flight quality, dead, no smell, no flavor, dead. $140 was paid for something that I would not touch for free . Shame. Very poor quality food. I sincerely question all those five star reviews. Not possible or this people never had good food . This place pretends to be something, copying the food plating and foreground g about substance, quality.

Yelp
Everything was delicious especially the Hong Kong chicken, the egg plant chips, crab and noodles, m duck - and the chocolate cake! I think the owner was the person helping us and she was a perfect host. The ingredients are top quality and result in wonderfully flavored food that tastes like it was made just for you with Not-oily, light and bright combinations. The dim sum offerings were perfect bites and the exterior of the bao was light and fluffy. The dining area is small, so think ahead and make your reservation. Look for street parking and you'll be in for a delightful time.

Yelp
We were in Los Angeles, totally doing the tourist thing. We had a carload of family, getting hungry and looking for good options, right as we hit Beverly Hills. With no plan in mind we pulled in to the first open parking spot and literally stumbled upon this great gem. The restaurant has patio dining and a few different inside options. We were quickly seated, not prepared for the amazing, fresh, tasty Asian cuisine that we were about to enjoy. The server was pretty much working alone and was super incredible, she helped us pick out meals, food for the kids and we enjoyed a great lunch. Can't say enough about Joss and I would definitely recommend to those in the neighborhood. We weren't sure if our kids would enjoy it, but they loved it. Go Joss!

Yelp
I've never eaten at the restaurant but I've ordered take out several times. It's our go to place for Chinese food in our area. The host Walter is always friendly and manages things efficiently. All the dishes are high quality and very good and well worth the price.

Yelp
cute spot that i've passed by and always wanted to try so came in for some late dim sum with my bf. we were the only patrons so we're immediately seated outside and received recommendations based on what we were looking to eat. the food was ok. as someone that hails from nyc and has eaten dim sum for most of their life the flavor profile wasn't really matching what i was expecting. overall the preparation and freshness of the food is there but the taste (for most the dishes) not so much. best thing we order was most def the shrimp dumplings and chicken & fig soup. i ordered a cup of the soup to go! spring rolls- large portioned, preparation great and the crunch is great. flavor was bland though soup dumplings- tasty but the dough is too thick and not very soupy. it is fresh though char siu bao- preparation great. dough is fluffy but not enough filling to balance the dish string beans- pretty soggy and bland. honey glazed spar ribs- preparation and freshness great, the meat falls off the bone. but not so flavorful chicken & fig soup- shrimp dumpling- great! in addition since we were the only patrons it seems like they forgot about us a lot of the time. and there were a couple of slip ups in terms of service (dropped plate, nearly got crushed by the umbrella shade, forgetting ordered items). really wanted to like this place and would like to come back and try other items on the menu to redeem itself. but in terms of the dim sum. still on the hunt for a great place here in LA.

As I See It S.

Yelp
It's been many years since I went to this restaurant because the last time I ordered take out I was given another person's order and didn't know it until I got home. That time they told me to just keep what I had received even though it had many things we did not eat. Because the restaurant is conveniently located I thought I'd try take out again. The food was inedible, it tasted like chemicals and they made mistakes with the order. First, they charged me $6 for brown rice, but gave me white rice. Overcharging me +$3 for brown, while $3 for tiny white rice is already an overpricing for that item was not acceptable. The mustard prawns for $32 were inedible since the noodles they came on tasted like they had been dipped in chemicals. The only thing that tasted good in the over soy sauced Cashew Chicken were the cashews. The Siu Mai was good and the shrimp toast had a weird taste, also like chemicals. To add insult to injury, when I picked up the order I could see the bag sitting on the counter, but the guy at the door decided to give a tour of the restaurant to a woman who had asked for a take out menu. Ok, she was there first, but when he came back a couple walked up and he chose to seat them inside the restaurant before giving me my food, that was not ok. It's customary for people to receive service in the order they arrived. If the food had been good I would've forgotten about it, but for more than $100 for 4 dishes of Chinese food I expect better all the way around. I guess I just forgot the reason I don't go to this restaurant. I certainly won't forget why again.

Yelp
Delicious food and gracious service! We just moved into our area and this was our first time. we're definitely coming back.

Gary W.

Yelp
The food tasted ok, but it's completely rip off. And the space is old, dusty and greasy.

Marhnelle H.

Yelp
First the food: authentic Peking Duck - outstanding. 4 sauces with homemade Plum Sauce and pancakes for a delight in every bite experience. That was only part of our tasting feast. Singapore Noodles, Shrimp sumai, vegetable spring rolls and a wonderful wine what a treat! Second the service: Walter made the night so fun and delicious. He helped with ordering and was so gracious. A real professional. Environment: Elegantly setting and very clean and safe. They treated us with small personally wrapped towel-lets. We were so impressed and will be back with friends and family. Enjoy - this is a sure thing. M

Yelp
This is wonderful restaurant , everything on the menu is wonderful... including the mustard prawns w noodles crabmeat siu mai and coconut pudding , those are very delicious . And the service was amazing ! Highly recommend !

Yelp
Generally there is a lack of good authentic Chinese food on the westside. Joss is one of the few exceptions. Along with newly open Din Tai Fung, Sichuan Impression and Meizhou Dongpo. Joss is the most cozy and attentive in service among these options. The food is mainly Cantonese style with several dim sum options as well as lunch special entrees. I'd highly recommend the lunch special and adding on 2 dim sum items for a very healthy and filling meal. It's a great place for a business lunch. I try to stop by whenever I'm in the area for a meeting.

Yelp
Sadly this place changed employees and now orders are wrong every single time. When you call you ask for managers who are (not surprisingly) never there. It's too frustrating ordering from this place. After 4-5x of the issue not being fixed I'm sad to say this is my last order. Best of luck to this company getting their act straight.

Yelp
Came here with a girlfriend on a Wednesday since I was close by in Beverly Hills. We didn't have a reservation but figured at 5:30pm when they opened, we wouldn't need to wait for 2 people. Most of the downstairs tables were reserved, so I chose what I thought was the best 2 person option (the table up by the cash register). The other options were next to the staircase and at the bottom of the staircase. I'm not sure what the upstairs looked like but it was a pretty small space downstairs. We ordered the chicken shiu mai, soup dumplings, har gow, Peking duck and ginger scallion noodles. The dim sum was good (soup dumplings at Din Tai Fung are still better, and cheaper too I think, but there was no vinegar on the table at Joss, even though we got ginger). Shiu mai and har gow were tasty. The Peking duck comes with wraps (not buns), which I was fine with and prefer (less carbs), and was very tasty. This was my favorite dish and it's a good amount of food. We also ordered the ginger scallion noodles which were ok (the ginger scallion noodles at Momofuku in Vegas were better). Overall it was a good meal, a bit expensive for Chinese food but it is located in Beverly Hills, so I wasn't expecting less. If I was in the area and craved Peking duck I'd come back!

Dave P.

Yelp
good food... awful service. After scheduling and order 3 hours in advance... they decided the kitchen was too busy and canceled order without notification. Chef got on phone and was very rude.

Justine R.

Yelp
This is my favorite Chinese restaurant in LA. The food is so delicious, fresh, and flavorful. I highly recommend the mustard prawns and shrimp toast. You won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Dan H.

Yelp
We were 15 mins late to our reservation and the staff was on break but Darah made sure to still accommodate us! The service was amazing!!! High quality, upscale Chinese food:)
google avatar

David H.

Yelp
We had a wonderful meal on their sidewalk patio. We tried a lot of their items and everything was delicious. I think their dim sum is the best. My favorite item was the eggplant - so delicious. Also the ancient grain clay pot was so unique and tasty. The atmosphere music in the background is relaxing and the planters transform the sidewalk to a beautiful space. With their setup we felt very safe and this street is fairly quiet.
google avatar

David P.

Yelp
These people made such a pleasant dining experience for our guests. The service was deeply attentive and the food was so good. I haven't had Peking duck done perfectly for a long time. Each of the other dishes were as terrific. My favorite was the eggplant chips - absolutely creative.

Ronald P.

Yelp
Very good food served in a very attractive environment by skillful hardworking staff.

Yelp
A small and intimate, 8 table little place. Outside, a box. Inside, nicely and simply decorated with a mural on a back wall, chinese art along the wall upstairs (more seating, 4 tables). If it weren't for the white tableclothes, I would likely think I was in Torrance, not BH. The lunch menu is small, and unconventional. The dinner menu is also small, but robust with unique dining options. It's simply a 2 column list of entrees. No waste of time with appetizers, salads, soups, and what nots. Here's what I had: 1. Shrimp Wonton Soup ($7.50) - 2 fresh and beautiful, long-tailed wontons filled with shrimp meat, fresh noodles, bok choy, and scallons. Wonderful. (4.5 stars) 2. Dim Sum Quintets - beautiful presentation of a fried potsticker, egg roll, and 3 individual bamboo containers filled with other dim sum. Drizzled on the side with chili sauce, chinese mustard, and plum sauce. (4.5 stars) 3. Chili Pepper Rice Noodles with Chicken ($12.50) - again, fresh rice noodles, topped with ground and spiced chicken. Flavorful! Yet small. (4.5 stars) 4. Glazed Cashew Chicken ($15) - glazed cashews were awesome, diced chicken just okay, and again, very small. Simply made with diced celery, gets a pass. (3.0 stars) Authentic is in the name, but is it real and in the game? 99% Chinese clientele should mean something, and waitstaff who barely speak English is another. I am in foreign territory, so I oblige. French music, although lovely, gets a big question mark...and doesn't transport me to China. Service is a little slow, can't get in and out in an hours lunchtime -- beware. Reservations highly recommended.

Yelp
could not be happier. The order was ready very quickly and carefully packed. The dim sums were one thé the best i had. The pecking duck was fresh and really good with the the accompaniment. Chocolate cake was really good. Can't wait tomorrow to re order

Yelp
Came on Friday night for dinner at 8:30pm. Plenty of parking on the street. Service was outstanding! My water cup was never empty. I ordered the hometown braised tofu and pineapple wok tossed rice. The tofu was amazinggggg. Sauce was on point. The pineapple rice was also good! Presentation was really cute. There was a generous amount of shrimp with the rice! Unlike other places! Overall, I totally recommend this place! You get what you pay for, good quality food. I honestly think it's totally worth it. I'm asian, I live in Monterey Park, I recently travelled to China. Joss totally meets my expectations of authentic Chinese cuisine!

Yelp
Haven't ate here and probably will never eat here. I understand restaurants are going through rough times right now. But, whoever was working today was kind of rude and no one was being rude to him for him to be like this towards his customers. I came to pick an order via door dash, they app told me it was ready to be picked up. When I got there the guy rudely told me without even looking at my order just heard DoorDash and the name and said oh 30 minutes.. he told another 15 minutes.. so 15 minutes pass and I just go up to the door to make sure everything is going ok.. then he goes oh well there's two people in front of you.. what does that have to do with anything? Another lady said she was waiting an hour... it's almost been 30 minutes and still nothing. Just a piece of advise, if you know you guys are kind of behind and need time to prepare, I'm pretty sure you can contact doordash to let them know the time span you need OR don't use doordash, postmates etc. just do direct phone calls, online orders etc. then you can give a more wait time for people to come pick up. Update: Went to check in 30 minutes, he didn't listen to the name I gave him, then when I told him the name he does "I told you 45, right?" This is a waste of my time, if this place comes back on my dash I'm never picking up from here again.

Yelp
I love Joss Cuisine! The food, service and quality are always fantastic and consistent. Walter is very attentive, greets with a smile and is wonderful every time.

Stephen K.

Yelp
I am begging this restaurant to find a way to take reservations online or at least have a telephone number that has voicemail if not a person. Please update your website to let people know the online link does not work. I am dying for great Chinese food and I know this place is it if only a business person had some influence on how they do business! Please pull it together and I will be your best customer!

Nell B.

Yelp
Joss is like a "best-kept secret" in Beverly Hills and the food is fantastic. Peking Duck and Pin Pei Chicken (like Peking Duck only with chicken and a favorite with kids) were outstanding, as were the dumplings, tofu, lettuce cups and side vegetables. We came as a small party one night and then came back the next night as a large party with two picky kids and everyone loved their meal. The service was elegant but not at all stuffy and save room for the steamed chocolate cake, which is not to be missed!
google avatar

Yelp
This place sucks. I came in as a lone business traveler. I was seated in a small, dark upstairs room. It was empty except for me. No one came to take an order. Deliver food. I sat alone for 15 minutes or more. Nothing. I went down and asked a waiter, Cesar, if this was ok or normal. He said this is how they treat customers--I showed him this review to have him verify. I asked if this is accurate. He said, "yes." I went out of my way to avoid posting this, I hate to write a bad review, but they left me no choice. I saw the food--I was never served. It looked greasy and bland. Update, they just sent the manager home. He was drunk.

Yelp
This is the best kept secret in Beverly Hills. True Hong Kong haute cuisine. I started visiting Joss in the early 90's. At that time located on Sunset at the edge of Beverly Hills, I enjoyed incredible upscale Cantonese cooking with friends and Entertainment business associates. You'd enter and Vidal Sassoon would be dining a table over. Agents, Attorneys and producers were eating and dealing. Cecilia, the owner lost her lease and moved to a smaller space on Santa Monica. A must try, there's incredible dim sum, Peking duck, Lobster over handmade noodles and great Beef,Lamb and Shrimp. Vegetables are to die for. Who knows? You might see Barbara Streisand!

Yelp
It's nice to be surprised. I was walking by this little restaurant on my way back to the hotel when I noticed a delicious aroma coming from inside. The small restaurant was packed with people. And now I know why. The food is excellent and the service superb. The wonton soup is hot and delicious not overpowered by any spice but perfectly made. The rice was also perfectly cooked and flaky. The meat in my Mongolian beef plate was tender and perfectly spicy. As you can tell from my other reviews, I don't use the word perfectly very often but in this case I have. I love to be surprised

Yelp
Finally, Chinese done right...not the Panda Express way. Everything was made to perfection. Sauces are subtle, fresh, and a true complement to fish and other things. The only downside is that prices are astronomical for a mainly take-out operation in a dingy boulevard storefront
