On a cold day after a winter storm feeling the winter blues, I chose Joy Cafe simply because of the name.
And I am so glad that I did, walking into Joy Cafe I immediately felt like I was walking into my home, my mother who had a passion for plants, flowers and art, would’ve loved this place.
You are greeted by Beautiful vibrant plants, in the front of the restaurant, followed by a beautiful wood slab section countertop, fresh in-house baked goods are displayed here along with a variety of wonderful whole leaf teas and other goodies. Wonderful art, strewn along the walls, decor has an art deco Kind of feel to the place.
Then I had the privilege of meeting Alice the chef owner of Joy Café, I’m so thankful for her taking the time out of her day to allow me to do a review of her restaurant. She is truly a wonderful person the heart and soul of the joy Café not knowing what to expect. I asked her to just give me a few of the favorite dishes that her customers enjoy on a regular basis.
Being busy, taking orders over the phone and taking care of customers at the counter, she truly amazed me preparing some of the most flavorful, healthy dishes I have come across in my vegan adventures. The menu is just downright fun to look at. We started off with a breakfast item. Don’t go bacon my heart which consisted of homemade coconut bacon, chickpea flaxseed egg, cashew cheese, tomato, and maple mustard. I chose everything bagel, this was an amazing combination. The bagel was so crusty and fresh. I’ve never had mustard on a breakfast sandwich before, but this was exceptional. It didn’t have the vinegar zing that mustard typically has this was a nice balance between sweet and slightly spicy, I’ve had coconut bacon from many places I would put this at the top of the list for the best I’ve ever had, The egg was perfect, Second dish that I had was Pho Eva Eva, which consisted of rice noodles in a ginger, turmeric, coconut broth topped with grilled mushrooms, carrots, steamed kale, and sesame seeds, The ginger in the hot broth just warms your whole body and makes you feel good. The mushrooms were grilled and really stood out with such an intense flavor and the ramen noodles were perfect this was a clear winner only rivaled by the The next bowl of soup I’m about to tell you about if I thought it couldn’t get any better. This one could be my favorite and it was called Miso Ramen the same healthy portion consisted of Ramen noodles in miso broth steamed kale, carrots, seaweed, and scallions topped with barbecued Seitan, just looking At this, I knew I was in for a treat, The steamed kale first off was something I’ve never had before usually it’s just thrown in the soup or overcooked, but this was done just right it was still green and full of nutrients yet slightly tender, and the miso broth was delicate and flavorful, and then I was hit by to date the best tofu I have ever tasted. I’ve never had tofu quite like this. I wanna know her secret. I should’ve asked there. I will next time when I’m in. I meant to save some for a friend of mine because I had so much food, but this didn’t last through the night I finished it That evening. Next on the list of things to try was the Philly cheesesteak wrap? I didn’t know what to expect as I’ve had many vegan cheesesteak wraps and vegan cheesesteaks. I didn’t think it was possible to go outside the box with this, but once again, this was different from anything that I’ve ever had made up of grilled vegan beef, sweet onion, melted cheese, and topped with tomato and spicy soy mayo after my first bite I knew why Alice named her restaurant Joy Café, this was a healthy size wrap, and the vegan beef was so light and tender and every bite just right, plenty of cheese and meat, I find that some places skimp a little bit on those i finished with a black banana smoothie, Cocoa Banana peanut butter, absolute perfection.
