Denver’s Best Breakfasts Worth Waking Up For

"Korean barbecue joint Chilgogi Korean BBQ morphs into Chinese breakfast counter Joy Lounge, which serves up the batons of fried dough called youtiao for dipping into soy milk along with other items such as shaobing — a flatbread with sweet or savory filling — and sticky rice rolls. There are worse ideas than coming for a late Chinese breakfast and staying for an early Korean lunch, bang bang-style." - Ruth Tobias, Eater Staff

If you are around the area and are hungry for some Chinese traditional breakfast, head to Joy Lounge, which is located in the Chilgogi Restaurant on Arapahoe Road. When you look at the menu, it’s listed in mandarin and English. However, you don’t see photos of the food items, you are not sure what you are ordering, so my suggestion is to pull up their website and look at the photos. There, you can see what each item looks like. My combination #1 consists of the pepper bun filled with meat, the youtiao, and instead of getting soy milk that is included with the combo meal, I upgraded to the soft tofu. I also ordered a soft boiled egg. The youtiao was really good, so eat it while they are hot. The egg was nothing special, so I won’t get it next. What I enjoyed eating were the pepper pork bun and the soft tofu. Biting into the bun with the seasoned ground pork reminded me of eating at a dim sum place, but better. The quality of this item was exceptionally good. Juice from the meat dipped on my hand. Very filling too. I divided my tofu by making it savory and sweet. Although I enjoyed eating the savory option, the ginger-sugar syrup is how I would end my meal at a dim sum place. The constant flow of people coming and going here makes the place busy. However, plenty of seats for those who want to dine in, and fast service for those who just want to order to go. Plenty of light, nice decorations, and the place is very clean. Workers are constantly busy wiping down the tables, sweeping the floor, and making this eatery a great place to have a meal with family or meeting up with friends to catch up what’s happening.

Wonderful Chinese breakfast!! Such a welcome sight to have here - it's always bustling with our vibrant Asian community on the weekends which is such a great thing to see! Joy Lounge is a weekend only breakfast popup situated inside Chilgogi and they're fantastic!! Their soy milk & tofu are made fresh, and are perfectly balanced in silky, nutty flavor. You can season them sweet or savory as you prefer, and it makes for the perfect breakfast. They recently added pepper meat buns to the menu, which is akin to the night market ones you'd see in Asia! It tasted so similar to what we know from Taiwan - super good and worth grabbing to enjoy with tofu. Their youtiao is also handmade and just flawless. Airy, crispy, yet chewy and soft on the interior. I always take one to go with a cup of soy milk when I visit!

If you’re looking for a true taste of a traditional Chinese breakfast, this spot is a hidden gem. You tiao (fried dough stick) is perfectly golden, crisp on the outside, and airy inside. Paired with their dou jiang (soy milk); breakfast bliss. The rice rolls are another standout: soft, slightly chewy, and wrapped with fillings like pork floss, or pickled veggies. Everything tastes homemade and balanced—not overly salty, just really comforting. I think they recently added pepper bao zhi (steamed buns with pork inside). Nice strong pepper taste but not overpowering. Very yummy My personal favorite was the relatively simple soft tofu bowl; adding some green onion and spicy sauce makes this sooooo good. Service is quick, prices are super reasonable, and the vibe is casual. If you're craving some Chinese breakfast nostalgia, this place delivers.

This pop-up Chinese breakfast spot is tucked inside Chilgogi (seriously need better signage from the parking lot). Having lived in China before, this is legit authentic stuff. Everything’s made from scratch. Went with 4 adults and 2 kids and tried most of the menu. The youtiao (it’s like an airy fried breadstick) was incredible - that perfect crispy outside and fluffy inside. Had it with sweet soy milk, though you can get it savory if you want. Loved the soy marinated eggs and those savory rice rolls with purple rice and youtiao inside. The tofu pudding can be customized with different toppings - ginger syrup, pickled veggies, and such. Good food, authentic flavors. If you want real Chinese breakfast in Denver, this is worth tracking down.

Eating breakfast at Joy Lounge in Greenwood Village has become a weekend routine. It offered traditional Chinese breakfast staples such as youtiao (fried breadsticks), purple rice rolls, shaobing (clay oven rolls), pepper pork buns, soy milk, soft tofu and soft boiled eggs. They had three different set breakfast with combination of three of these items. As authentic as it gets and very delicious. No wonder it was usually packed with customers, many with families. Didn't need to be an early riser or skip church, as It opened from 8am to 12pm on both Saturday and Sunday. Joy Lounge is inside Chilgogi Korean BBQ at Arapahoe and Peoria.

Food was phenomenal—the best youtiao you can find in the United States. We ordered the youtiao, soymilk/soft tofu pudding, sweet jianbing, and rice roll. Youtiao was crisp on the outside and perfectly fluffy on the inside. The jianbing had a rose jam filling which was not too sweet but very aromatic and the pastry was deliciously flaky. The soymilk/soft tofu pudding can be customized to your liking with their toppings bar by adding sugar, salt/soy sauce, pickled vegetables, or the house made ginger syrup. And the rice roll made for a wonderful conclusion with grains of rice that didn’t mush together with a youtiao on the inside. Staff was very friendly and helpful, giving us samples of both sweet and salty jianbing to try before we ordered. The location is a bit difficult to find if you don’t know that it’s located inside the Chilgogi—they could benefit from putting up a sign on the outside of the building!

My favorite was the rice roll, but everything else was also so yummy. I love the savory condiment bar for the soft tofu. Pickled veggies were perfect.

This authentic Chinese breakfast place is located in the same space as a Korean restaurant. First, it’s a nice clean restaurant and space. Next, it’s a simple Chinese breakfast. You either know nothing on the menu, or you recognize everything on the menu. Fried dough sticks great. Soft tofu is done very well. Highly recommend for anyone seeking an authentic Chinese breakfast.

Yelp
Joy Lounge was a very yummy breakfast! I got youtiao and soy milk. The soy milk only came hot. The youtiao was very yummy. It's located in a strip mall and is slightly hard to find. Owners are very nice! There is plenty of seating and parking available!

Yelp
Quick, friendly, AUTHENTIC, and delicious. Located inside of chilgogi, and only open on weekend mornings. I sometimes find myself asking, "how many days until the weekend is here?" for the breakfast. Might be average to lower end of average if in Asia, but this is really high for America. If you want access to better, then make a trip to Asia. My current obsession is the savory rice rolls. A thin layer of purple rice wrapped around a fried bread, pork floss, seasoning, and chopped crunchy pickled veggies. They also make perfectly prepared soy eggs. And the soy milk is also super delicious here. I strongly dislike the soy milk sold at American grocery stores, so don't let that keep you from getting the soy milk here. I also enjoyed their savory shaobing and soft tofu. Their pepper shaobing, sweet shaobing, and sweet rice roll are alright. Well-made, but not my personal preference. Their menu is somewhat limited, and I think I listed everything that they serve. Parking is a breeze and whenever I'm there, there is always a table available for my family.

Yelp
Housed in the same space as Chillgolgi is Joy Lounge! They serve traditional Asian breakfast items, many of which I grew up. All the flavors are nostalgic and don't know how I didn't see this place any earlier. The sticky rice roll has got to be my favorite and highly recommended! It came out warm, flavorful and just a delight. Some people may find the texture of the crueler (Chinese donut) inside to be a little chewy but it certainly adds to the flavor profile. I found it to be on the pricy side but hey I'll take it until there are other places that decide to make it. Service is fast casual and you order at the counter. The cashier who was helping me was super helpful and down town earth. If you're on the fence or just curious for a different breakfast experience this is the place to go!

Yelp
Went here on Saturday after seeing raving reviews on Facebook and it didn't really live up to the hype. The food was yummy, don't get me wrong. They were a little salty and the soy milk was super bland even with some toppings in it. The place was super busy and packed as well crowded. The guy ringing people up did seem nice. However for what Facebook keeps talking about I think I'll stick to reminiscing of my California Asian breakfast places

Yelp
Exactly what we were looking for. Traditional, made from scratch Chinese breakfast pastries. They even make their own soy milk from scratch, the flavor difference really stands out.
