U.K. Coronavirus Pandemic Fear Lifts for London’s Chinatown Restaurants | Eater London

"A central-Chinatown restaurant that participated in the Eat Out to Help Out scheme and drew visitors during early August; a customer reported the area felt quieter than usual but still lively, praising the food and atmosphere and noting that the return of restaurants has been important for socialising and for retaining Chinatown’s character despite Covid restrictions." - Angela Hui

Our longtime favorite — worth the drive every time! We’ve been going to Joy Luck for several years now, and truly, it never disappoints. It’s hands-down the best Chinese food in the area. We happily make the trek out to Sandy just for this place, and whenever we have a show at Hale Centre Theatre, Joy Luck is our pre-show tradition. This visit was no different: no wait, quick seating, and incredibly fast service — which is a lifesaver when you’re trying not to be late for curtain time. We started with the deep-fried cream cheese wontons, perfectly crisp with a delicious sweet-and-sour dipping sauce. (Confession: I sometimes pour a little of that sauce over my rice instead of soy — it adds the best hint of sweetness!) We each got soup as well: hot & sour for my partner and egg drop for me. Their egg drop soup is the best I’ve ever had. Sometimes I crave it and stop by just for a bowl. For mains, we ordered the black pepper steak and the Cantonese noodles with chicken. As expected, everything was flavorful, saucy, and served in generous portions. You cbsolutely get your money’s worth here. One thing I love is their huge menu — so many options, and everything we’ve tried over the years has been great. I’m also a big fan of their combination dinners where you get an entrée, soup, rice, and eggroll. Perfect if you want your own complete plate, but also easy to mix, match, and share if you’re going family-style. Joy Luck has been consistently wonderful for years: friendly staff, fast service, big portions, and truly delicious food. We’ll keep coming back — pre-show or not!

Google
Outstanding! Honestly! I was a little worried being gluten free but they were so accommodating. The waiter knew what had gluten and what didn’t! They can make their sweet and sour chicken gluten free and honestly it was incredible. My husband even said it was so good for gluten free. They even brought me gluten free soy sauce! I’ve ordered takeout from them since then and it still as amazing. Portions are big and they are decently priced! Highly recommend. They also accept Amex cards!

Google
Joy Luck is one of my favorite places to eat. The food always tastes fresh and consistent. The service is quick, and the staff are friendly and attentive. The place feels comfortable and clean, perfect for a casual meal with family or friends. The tangerine chicken is my top recommendation. It has the perfect mix of sweet and tangy flavor with just the right amount of crisp. Every visit feels easy and enjoyable, and the food never disappoints.

Google
Back in 2008, Joy Luck was one of the restaurants I visited often. Over time, I had almost forgotten about it. But today, in 2025, while searching for Chinese food near my hotel in Sandy, the name Joy Luck appeared—and instantly, all the sweet memories of my year in Lehi, Utah came flooding back. I smiled and told myself, I have to taste it again. Walking in felt like stepping into the past. The flavors, the warmth, the familiarity—it was all still there. The outcome? Just as before, Joy Luck never disappoints. Still good, still comforting, still a piece of my story.

Google
Ordered through door dash so I can’t say my full experience but i wasn’t too impressed. Ham fried rice was delicious! Sweet and sour chicken was decent (wish it came mixed instead of sauce on the side). We got an order of the fried prawns which was too deep fried. The creamy egg drop soup was decent but my daughter wasn’t a fan of it. The chow mein didn’t taste like normal chow mein.

Google
Absolutely love coming here! I finally remembered to take pictures today. The gluten free tangerine chicken is AMAZING— I love that most of their menu can be made gluten free! When they figure out GF crab rangoon they will have all my money 😅

Google
The egg drop soup was good but unexpectedly sweet. Some of the chicken in the chicken and snow peas had a strange flavor but the snow peas and the vegetables were good. The fried shrimp and General Tso’s was very good and so was the hot and sour soup and the fried rice. Service was efficient. The salt water fish aquarium was nice but it needs to be cleaned.

Bob J.

Google
The soups were godey , and not as appetizing as other restaurants. The entrees were pretty good, but nothing special. Not really a great value for the price. Panda would be a better choice for the money. There seemed to be plenty of seating and a couple lathe groups arrived while waiting for our take out. They have a very nice salt water fish tank with a couple Nemos and a Dori, amongst others.

Yelp
These are genuinely the nicest servers on the planet. You will not get better service. Seriously. Worlds best. Their lunch special is my favorite, it's so much food, so many options and the price is unbeatable. I love their egg rolls and cream cheese wontons. Love the ham fried rice. Love a side salad. Love anything with water chestnuts in it. Did their Thai basil this last time but I also have enjoyed the mushroom.

Yelp
I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place. This is the third or fourth time I've eaten here. We ordered moo goo gai pan, lemon chicken, and ham fried rice. The Moo goo gai pan was excellent. The gravy has a nice garlic flavor and would've made a great sauce for chow Mein. The lemon chicken was too sour and needed more sweetness. The chicken was also over cooked and was hard to chew. The fried rice had nice chunks of ham and was seasoned just right. No MSG. We also ordered a side of chow Mein. It tasted like noodles and soy sauce. Don't order this. Overall, not bad. Definitely not authentic. But that's what I was going for tonight. I didn't want to go to Panda

Yelp
Ordered take out. Called it in when I was leaving the South Town Mall. Ordered beef and broccoli combo for my wife and ma po tofu combo for me. He wasn't accurate when the gentleman on the phone told me it would be 15 minutes or so. I drove there, it is literally a 3 minute drive. Parked the car, went in, paid for my order, was told it would be a few minutes. One minute later, out came my order. This was blazing fast! Blazing fast. Five minutes. This is my first time here. This is a large restaurant. It was Friday night and the parking lot and place was packed. The place looks somewhat classy. Now the food. First of all, the portions are quite generous. I've had two meals already and I still have enough for another one plus. My wife said the beef wasn't cut thinly like most places, but was good as was the broccoli. So was her egg drop soup. My ma po tofu was excellent. The flavor was perfect. The heat was just right, enough of a kick to make my nose run a bit, but not too much that I was burning. Nice cubes of silken tofu, quarter cuts of black mushrooms, tender slices of pork, thin slices of green peppers...and shrimp! Never had shrimp in ma po tofu before. This was excellent. I highly recommend upgrading your entreé to the combo dinner. You get a choice of soup or salad, an egg roll, fried rice with ham, and a large deep fried butterflied shrimp for only $3.75. Definitely worth it. My hot and sour soup was excellent. The shrimp was excellent. Although the egg roll pales compared to my mom's :) it still had some meat in it and was nice and crispy. I was beginning to give up finding a decent Chinese restaurant since moving here. I now have hope. And it is only 5 minutes from my house. Bonus. 5* = A top favorite. Mind-blowing good. I will definitely return and I will go out of my way to go here. Worth every dime of my money. 4* = Outstanding. Top-tier. Some elements not quite as good as it gets, but it still is worthy of my regular business. 3* = Good experience. I might do repeat business if it is convenient, the only option, the only one in its category, or on a whim, but would not be among the first thing to come to mind. Would definitely recommend you trying it to get your own take on it. 2* = Not so good. Would not recommend at all. Waste of money. 1* = How are they still in business? Stay away at all costs!

Yelp
Every time I pass through the area, I get a week's worth of take-out from Joy Luck! I had to give up gluten 15 years ago, and Chinese food is some of the most difficult to find gluten free. I love how much of Joy Luck's menu is accessible to me, and everything I've tried has been SUPERB. I love this place!

Yelp
.Seated right away. Good customer service. Ordered pot stickers, they were crispy and hot when served. Orange chicken had a good orange flavor, light breading. Chicken lomein was tender noodles, tender chicken. Veru good first visit.

Yelp
I'm always on the hunt for new places to eat that are better than the previous. This was my purpose for coming here. My buddy has dinner here regularly so ai picked up a ton of good order with my typical beef fried rice, Szechwan beef and pot stickers. I found the food good but not better than any of the places I order from nearer to my home. Perhaps I need to dine in to see if I'm missing something by taking out. The Host was very pleasant, the food was delivered very quickly and the men's bathroom was very clean. I like the Joy Luck Club and I think you will too.

Yelp
First off, I've lived in Sandy since 2015 and have driven by this restaurant almost every week day since 2016. I've always wondered how it was, but never wanted to take a chance. I came here with my coworkers for lunch and was pleasantly surprised from start to finish. My husband is normally the Chinese food guy. I am often not in the mood, and have a hard time finding places I'm enthusiastic about. But I went back to this spot soon after my first visit because I loved it so much. I got honey walnut shrimp, which is my go-to. The lunch special prices were super fair, and the portions were generous. Highly recommend trying at lunch time since the stakes are lower than at dinner. Our food came out quickly, and everyone at the table was happy with their food. We were seated quickly. Our service was fine--nothing stands out in either a positive or negative direction. My second visit was for dinner with my family. We had a bit of a wait, but nothing too crazy, and the quoted time was accurate. Food and service were consistent on my second visit. I genuinely like Joy Luck and will be happy to go back anytime my husband wants Chinese food.

Yelp
Love this place !! Great family friendly and meet for business lunch spot we come here all the time. Friendly and fast service with a smile

Yelp
We had a wonderful experience and a tasty meal. We are traveling with our service dog, and had zero issues, looks or improper interactions. We were seated right away on a Saturday night, and given a quiet back corner booth which helps reduce distractions. Our server (Fong) was fantastic. She was very attentive, and kindly brought our dog a bowl of water (unprompted). Food was very good, proportions generous and pricing was fair. It is stressful to travel and dine in unfamiliar places, you never know if you'll have a bad experience related to having a service dog. Joy Luck made it very easy, comfortable and I would be happy to return the next time I'm in the area. Thank you!

Yelp
The Bountiful Joy Luck is one of my favorite restaurants, and this location is growing on me. The food here is just as amazing as at the Bountiful location (I think the menu might actually be a little bigger). And it's just as good of a deal--lots of food for the price; you're pretty much guaranteed to have leftovers. The ambience here is similar but not quite as good. It feels a little more crowded in some places, maybe because the front of the restaurant is more narrow. Finally, the service. I definitely get better service in Bountiful--although the staff knows me there from many years of patronage, which probably contributes. I also don't understand why there are no lazy Susans on the round tables at this location.

Yelp
The food was delicious! Our waiter did a fantastic job taking care of us. We hopefully will get to go back. If you are in the area and craving Chinese definitely recommend trying Joy Luck!

Yelp
This is our favorite Chinese food restaurant. General Tsao's Chicken is the best. Crispy breading, moist fresh chicken, some sweet and heat in the sauce. Amazing! Fried rice is also great. Service was incredibly fast, and waters never went below 1/2 cup.
google avatar

Heidi M.

Yelp
The egg rolls taste like fish and are greasy. They really need to change their frying oil. The cream cheese wontons were soggy and came to the table lukewarm at best. The Mongolian noodles and pan fried noodles were delicious. I will return for entrees and skip the appetizers.
google avatar

Apoorva B.

Yelp
We desperately were in a search of hot and sour soup and that's when we stumbled upon this place. We didn't expect that sort of heavy crowd and we had to wait for 25 mins to get to our table. We ordered two individual platters which comes with a choice of hot and sour soup and a salad. One egg roll, fried shrimp, ham fried rice which we got it replaced with chicken fried rice and an entree- Chinese chicken curry was our choice-. We also ordered pot stickers. We had them made to spice level 4 and since we really like our food hot we loved every bit of it. This is by far the best Chinese restaurant we tried. Ambiance is pretty decent and our server was so attentive and extremely nice to us.

Yelp
First off the service was incredible. Our glasses never got below half empty before they were filled up again. Also, our waiter overheard our 2 year old being upset about not having any more of the creamy egg drop soup and he brought us another one just for her. We ordered the family size meal that included half a bobo, I got the red curry and my husband had the sweet and sour pork. The curry was outstanding; seriously I ate until I couldn't any more. The sweet and sour was crunchy and delicious. We will absolutely be making this our go to spot!

Yelp
Joy Luck has the best Chinese food ! The service here is fast & the food is always so good . The restaurant is clean . The menu has a lot of choices . We ordered the Pon Pon chicken this is a spicy fried chicken breast in spicy sauce . We added on a combo so we got fried shrimp , egg roll , ham fried rice & egg drop soup . The soup is good but has a strong ham & corn taste . The Pon Pon chicken comes with a lot you can definitely share it . This was all so good . Just the right spice We also got the Hawaiian Fried rice . This is so good ! It comes with pineapple, coconut, cashews, chicken, bbq roasted pork & ham . This comes with a ton of rice . Very delicious & sweet. They have Coke products .

Yelp
Consistent good food. Attentive servers. Could use some updates in the building. Keep going back

Yelp
Good food and reliable every time. I do wish they still had egg foo young on the menu and offered fortune cookies with takeout orders.
google avatar

April D.

Yelp
I absolutely love the pon pon chicken! This is one of my favorite places. I haven't tried anything I don't like yet, though I do wish they would use better greens for their salad and not just iceberg.
google avatar

Yelp
The food was delivered promptly while it was still hot. Everyone was happy with what we ordered. Including the picky teenager. We enjoyed our meal.

Mary Jo C.

Yelp
Decided to stop in and try this place over the weekend and we were pleasantly surprised. It was busy and we had a wait when we showed up. It wasn't too long 10-15 minutes at most. I will say our server was slightly surprised when we ordered hot tea with our appetizers. We decided on the Bo Bo Platter as we couldn't decide on one or two only. That platter was huge and delicious. We also order the basics really fried rice, yakisoba noodles, A beef and vegetable dish, and sweet and sour chicken. Everything was pretty tasty. The only thing we were kind of whatever about was the egg drop soup which we just added salt and pepper to. Over all the food was great and so were the people.
google avatar

Katie C.

Yelp
I could make an entire meal out of their eggrolls. I love in St George where there are not any remotely decent Chinese places and I couldn't want to stay in Sandy and have Chinese. Ordered take out from here as I was up for a conference and I wish I would have ordered just eggrolls and maybe rice. Everything I order was great, but for some reason the eggroll stood out. Happy family was fantastic as well.
google avatar

Horatio M.

Yelp
Place is okay for luck special but nothing great about this place. Have been there 2x. Same guys working there both time. One guy very friendly and other guy (shorter a grump). Food is okay but nothing to get excited about. Price and portions are good. Only been for lunch and never appears crowded so ordering and food comes fairly quick.
google avatar

Christi J.

Yelp
I have a very strict diet that I follow, so it can be hard to find a place to eat out at. This place, surprisingly, was very accommodating to my needs. The waitress I had was super nice and helpful. I would definitely go there again.
google avatar

Adriana R.

Yelp
This place serves family style food. This is a good place to go to if you're with a bigger group and want to order a bunch of different things and split it amongst everyone. Service was slow and a little grouchy, but overall, the food isn't bad. Go if you're with a big group and craving some Chinese.

Dan D.

Yelp
When we go out it's tough to find a lot of gluten free options. This place has plenty! Food is good with lots of choices. Ambiance is okay. If you're looking for a go to Chinese place in Sandy you won't miss out here!

Ben B.

Yelp
Good food, good prices, great service & the ambiance is as one would expect from a Chinese restaurant near Salt Lakes China Town.

Yelp
Excellent excellent food, what a pleasant suprise! I was jonesing for some Chinese, not thai not "asian" CHINESE. I happened to be in Sandy, and hit the yelp. I looked decent so I gave it a try, and I'm glad i did. Food reviews Hot and Sour Soup 5 stars- I really really wanted some hot and sour and this soup was some of the best I've ever had. tangy and peppery, very tasty. Nice portion also. Potstickers 4 stars, really nothing wrong with them, just not perfection. Eggplant with beef 5 stars. I zoned in on the eggplant on the menu as I love asian eggplants so much i grow them in my garden. This did not disappoint. Tasty rich sauce, eggplant cooked just right with tender beef portions. This is the dish that said legit restaurant. Portions across the board were excellent with nice presentation on each dish. So why the 4 stars? Service was inattentive. Not bad just ignored. long time to order, long time for dishes, worst sin of all was my constantly empty water glass. Also I ordered eggplant with beef and got some other stir fry dish without any eggplant in it. When i corrected them, they were very polite, but i had to wait 10 more minutes. Disclaimer, it was 2 in the afternoon, the traditional Chinese restaurant down time, so that may have been why the service was less than stellar. Excellent food, i hope they do better at regular meal times. The food was good enough to want to go back to find out!

Yelp
The parking lot looked full but we were seated right away in our own quiet corner of the restaurant. They have an extensive gluten free menu which is amazing especially for Chinese food. The service was seriously fast food fast. I was astounded. And the gluten free orange chicken was great! My friend who eats normal food couldn't tell it was gluten free. Loved that it wasn't spicy at all. And I really liked the smoky flavor of the Cantonese flat noodles (which are also gluten free). So glad we had dinner there!

Kimberly L.

Yelp
The food is always good! The servers are friendly and can memorize everything! I love the colorful healthy fruit salad you!
google avatar

Ariana R.

Yelp
This was our first time trying joy luck in Sandy! I heard they have a lot of gluten free options. The food was delicious. They have a dedicated fryer for GF. The staff was so knowledgeable on GF. We portions were large. We will definitely be back.
google avatar

Layne D.

Yelp
I loved this place! I got the lemon chicken as a classic family combo (about $4 more than the base price) and you get a ton of food! Making it a classic family combination adds choice of soup (I got hot and sour), 1 Fried Prawn, 1 Egg Roll, and 2 Cheese Wontons plus ham fried rice. The hot and sour soup was SO good. I'm usually not a big soup person but this was some of the best I've had. The prawn, egg roll, and cheese wontons were very good as well. The lemon chicken itself was a HUGE portion size and I really liked the sauce. Overall I would definitely recommend Joy Luck when you're in the mood for Chinese!
google avatar

Jaimie H.

Yelp
Don't order the roast duck! Service was great. The place is getting a little run down.

Yelp
Been going here for 16 plus years. The absolute best Chinese! Door Dash or dine in!!!

Yelp
Joy Luck was a pleasant experience. The atmosphere was nice, and the restaurant was clean, hell even the bathrooms were clean. The food was excellent, my wife ordered the beef and broccoli, and I got the sweet and sour. The food came with Egg Drop soup which both of us love. This Egg Drop soup was not your typical Egg Drop soup though. It was creamy white and sweet tasting. Don't get me wrong it was still great, just a little different from the norm. My one small hiccup was that the server only checked up on us once (it's not like they had a mass rush going on) and I didn't get even 1 refile on my water. The price of the food was moderate, it wasn't the most expensive Chinese food out there, but it wasn't bargain basement prices either. Both of us feel that the price point was on par for what you get in quantity and quality. Example: the sweet and sour was cooked to perfection. No very hard nuggets (like they've been sitting under a heat lamp for hours). The beef to broccoli ratio was perfect (in my humble opinion). The rice was light and fluffy. I would recommend Joy Luck if you're in the area or driving by trying to decide on "What's for dinner." Or if you're needing a change from the same old, same old.
google avatar

Rachel R.

Yelp
I wanted this place to be good but the sweet and sour chicken and spare ribs were barely edible. So tuff! Nothing stood out other than damn, that was a waste of $55.

Betty P.

Yelp
Gross food. Everything tasted the same. All served on one plate and oozing with grease. Never to return

Uniboonz K.

Yelp
A family favorite and their walnut shrimp is unmatched! Servers are so cool and owner is a great friend. Great for groups and wonderful environment. Joy luck is where it's at.

Yelp
I was having a bad day and one of my friends offered to take me to dinner. He had always talked about a local Chinese restaurant he really liked so I recommended that we go there. This was my first time trying Joy Luck--I had never even heard of it until he started talking about it, but I heard it was great food and I was excited to try it. Joy Luck is a bit tucked away but in a really cool building with plenty of parking. They had lots of patio seating but when we went to Joy Luck, it was January so the patio seating was not opened yet. Upon entering into the building, they had a super cool fish tank. The fish tank had lots of cool fish but my favorite was the nemos and the dorys. Upon sitting down, we were given menus and a moment to decide what we wanted. They had a dinner combo that included all kinds of menu items, so I opted for that. We started off with some soup; I opted for the creamy egg drop soup and my friend got the hot and sour soup. I would've liked to try to hot and sour soup but I was a bit worried that I wouldn't like it. The hot and sour soup seemed a bit riskier than the creamy egg drop soup--so the egg drop soup seemed like a safer option. We also ordered some cream cheese wontons to share. They were good but I felt they were a bit hard to eat, specifically because of the tough texture on the outside of the wonton. They were also hard to eat in several bites as they would crumble. The sauce that came with the wontons was really good and I appreciated the bed of lettuce for presentation. For the entree, I opted for the General Tso's chicken. This also came with shrimp and an egg roll. I don't particularly like shrimp so I let my friend have my shrimp. For the egg roll, I thought it was pretty bland but it tasted a lot better with the sauce that the wontons came with. It also didn't taste super fresh, which was a bummer, but I still appreciated being able to try it with the rest of my meal. The rice was pretty good. I have had better but it wasn't the worst either. It paired well with some soy sauce. The chicken was super good. It seemed to be the perfect amount of spice and they made sure it was all coated with the sauce. To wash it all down, we both got Mountain Dews. One thing that I found to be really interesting, was the way that they set a can of Mountain Dew down on our table when we wanted a refill of the drinks. I have never seen this before and just thought it was super interesting. All in all, Joy Luck was an awesome place to visit. I was super happy I went and I would love to go back.

Yelp
Great food and even better service. We have never been disappointed, very clean restaurant, plenty of parking. I am hooked on the Peking Spareribs with a sweet tangy glaze. Portions are good size, and they offer lunch combos. At dinner, you can order a dinner combo, classic family style, or Royal Family style. This is our go-to Chinese restaurant.

T T.

Yelp
I always love my meal when I eat at Joy luck. It's great American style Chinese food.
google avatar

LaNae P.

Yelp
We got Mongolian beef to go the sauce is good but the beef is so chewy I had to spit every single piece out really disgusting so disappointed

Anthony B.

Yelp
The chow mein was super flavorful and yummy like each time that we visited. I love the ginger added to the chicken chow mein. The fried rice, while it has peas and carrots... Taste great. The server was part of the family that owns the restaurant and is an exceptional waiter. There was a hour and a half. Wait, the staff had the ability to get the smaller groups in, but did it in order. For as busy as it was, the staff could've swept up a little from spills here and there of rice and other things. Overall, the ambience is cozy.

Yelp
We have ordered food, a couple times now from Joy Luck restaurant. Every time the food's been good. It's our new go to Chinese restaurant now. I would recommend it!

Yelp
The food was super yummy and satisfying. The to go service was amazing and they packaged everything to be fresh when we got home. (Sauces for protein on the side for us to add at home). Highly Recommend.

Food was disgusting. The duck had a very strong freezer burned flavor. The calamari was so greasy and tasted like bad oil. Our server was nice but very forgetful. I woukd not recommend this place at all.

Yelp
It was very busy and I honestly don't know why. We got there and were quoted a wait time of 30 minutes. We were seated after about 15 always nice. The service wasn't great. Our server was very short with us and wasn't very friendly. It felt very rushed. I ordered their sweet and sour chicken. It wasn't great. The portions are large but the food is subpar. My friend ordered the Thai curry. He enjoyed it but it was very spicy. The best thing on the table was the white rice. My biggest problem was the food was mediocre and the service wasn't friendly. I don't like feeling like I'm being rushed or that I'm unwelcome in a place where we are paying for the food. I'd recommend going somewhere else especially since the prices aren't cheap.
