I discovered J's several years ago before they opened. They had just put the containers in place and my belly was ready for a happy. But, I moved back to Tennessee (and girl, for why??) and it fell off my foodie radar.
But this week I spent a few days working from New Orleans and a friend suggested it for my last meal before heading out. MANE IT WAS SO GOOD. Here are a few things to know before you go:
1. Containers are neat, but they're small (and kind of hot with that heat coming out of the kitchen). There's an outdoor patio with shade, but without a breeze it'll feel like a hotbox. There were a lot of flies (they wanted some of those wings, too), so between the heat and insects, an industrial fan would've been perfect. We saw several people getting their food to go and wondered why we didn't think of that.
2. I had the 6 piece combo which came with two wing flavors, fries, ranch and a drink. BUT...I paid $3 extra to upgrade to a beer and it was worth it. I got a pint of Hopitoulas, which can be anywhere from $5-7 elsewhere. I did the creole rub and island jerk wings and not only were they amazing: THEY GAVE ME ALL FLATS After tip -- yes, please tip the people taking your order!! -- I paid $20 for my food. Pricey, but satisfying.
3. MORE THAN WINGS! J's is actually three places in one: a wing spot, a beer garden and a dessert shop. Like, who came up with this perfect idea! There's something for everyone.
To sum this thang up, go visit. But bring a personal fan if you decide to sit outside.
