"Months ending in “R” be damned, I pull up a stool at J’s Seafood Dock’s oyster and seafood bar and slurp down half a dozen Gulf fatties before moving to Alberto’s Wine and Cheese Bistro." - Allison Alsup

Google
found inside the French Open Air Market food was absolutely delicious. my husband said they were the best alligator bites he's had and I agree first time I've ever tried soft shell crab and thought it was delicious. my Creole oysters with colored greens were divine my husband even ate some collard greens

Originally good to try a different shop. One of the other vendors highly recommended J’s over the other the shops. Order the half fried shrimp and fish boat on fries. Daaaayum… the food was on point. Everything was fresh, catfish and shrimp were damn good. Shrimps, we clean plump and delicious. Thank you again for the great meal and experience.

The largest raw oysters I have ever had! I split a dozen and it was perfect. Love the atmosphere, and the selections overall will have to be tried next time I come back. Best part, no line and very friendly service!

Excellent crew on the Tail Watcher!! Captain Bryson, and deck Lacey and Ben were exceptional! Highly recommend!

Google
This place is a MUST TRY in New Orleans! Fantastic creole food with fresh ingredients that tastes like it was made with love and passion. My go to dish I order is the oysters creole but I've also have their crawfish pie and crawfish beignets - all amazing! Whatever sauce they drizzle on their food is so delicious I wish I could bottle it up lol. The staff are friendly as always and my food comes in a timely manner. I love that there's also seats nearby to enjoy my meal. I can't WAIT to return here. 😋

Google
This place was recommended by my sister, from her previous trip to New Orleans. All I can say is wow... Everything was tasty, fresh and well made. It was all made relatively fast. The oysters were huge! I’ve never seen or tasted anything like it. I tried the other food stands, J’s is hands down the best.

Google
Tried the upside down oysters, nice little fried snack. The guy at the kitchen counter was very helpful, he also helped us choose the sauces, seasonings etc we wanted to purchase - explained us everything patiently. Can’t say the same about the staff at the cash register, not as friendly.

Loved everything I tried. Fab food and Duane was so friendly and helpful…. Highly recommended ✨

Yelp
This gem of a place is located in the French Market. It's a great place to grab some fresh oysters that are shucked right in front of you. I somehow always ending up coming here whenever I'm in New Orleans. 5 stars and 2 thumbs up!

Syreta G.

Yelp
The food is delicious! Just the right touch of New Orleans and Cajun style! Service was fast. Food was fresh. Atmosphere is enjoyable.

JP P.

Yelp
SO and I stopped at the French Market for a quick lunch. We decided to try this place out. The fish sandwich, shrimp and oysters were all good. A nice place for a quick bite while touring the area.

Keri L.

Yelp
Located in the Shops at the Colonnade, they have food displayed on the counter so you can kind of see what you get. It all looks fried and like it's nothing special, but once we tasted some of it, we actually went up to order more. It's weird that the prices are not obvious/listed but it was pretty reasonably priced! The soft shell crab was $18 (after trying it, my husband got a second order of this--we also got a second order of the alligator bites). We sat at a counter across from the store front and our food order came up without much of a wait. The staff were all very friendly and fun too. We watched the bartender shuck some fresh oysters for someone sitting beside us. The alligator bites were exactly what I wanted and hoped for. This was the third location we ordered alligator at and it was easily the best! Nice big hunks of alligator meat--not just an overly breaded crumb--it was so delicious! Great location for people watching and located right beside Holy Crepe!

Yelp
Busy Saturday visit at the French Market after a guided tour and we were hungry! We saw that J's had displays of their food and it was so helpful. Our party of 5 decided on shrimp tacos, seafood quesadilla and alligator bites. Everything was delicious. Tables are hard to claim but we were able to enjoy our meal without any problems.

Michael G.

Yelp
J's is located in a busy market place type area. Order from the stand, some dishes (such as oysters and boiled crawfish) are picked up from the bar directly across from the stand. Present your ticket so they know you're waiting for an order. The staff are very polite. Free for all tables or can sit at the bar. The BBQ shrimp is incredible, super buttery with a spicy kick. You'll soak the bread in the sauce and savor each bite. First time eating boiled crawfish and it was very good. Will definitely be back the next time I'm in NOLA.

Trisha H.

Yelp
Service was fast, the workers there were nice, and the food was hot. One of the few food places in the French Quarter that is a reasonable price and tastes just as good as the food on display looks.

Megana V.

Yelp
Got their oyster creole, crawfish tails, and shrimp tacos. All the seafood was really fresh! Everything had delicious Cajun spices! The sauce they used made everything taste similar which I didn't love but overall a good meal.

Matt H.

Yelp
A must try for anyone looking for fresh crawfish and oysters. Great staff and atmosphere.

LINA M.

Yelp
It's located in French Quarters in the outdoor patio area where they have a counter and another oyster bar area where the oysters are freshly shucked. I didn't like the boiled crawfish with no flavoring on them. I need them drenched in cajun sauce or have my crack sauce to dip. The oysters were okay.

Debra F.

Yelp
Get to this place early because a queue forms very quickly and there's a reason why. Reasonably priced, tasty seafood from oysters to crawfish. It's in the French market so don't order till you have found a seat (and those are hard to come by around lunch time). It's a free for all for tables. Only order once you've gotten a table as their platters are large and come out hot. We had the crawfish boil and the crab legs. 2lbs of the most delicious crawfish and crab legs. All for less than $50. We got to the French Market around 11am, got a table and were eating by 11.15. So it was more brunch than lunch! Walked around the market and then back to the French quarter by way of Cafe Du Monde by which time the morning crowds there had died down and we walked in and got a seat immediately!

Amanda C.

Yelp
Tried the oyster creole! So different than anything Ive had and enjoyed every morsel ! Friendly staff as well .

Jed W.

Yelp
Had the fried oysters for a quick bite and they were delicious. Js is in the French Market and I love that they have examples of all of their dishes out front so you can see what you're ordering. The staff were very nice, patient and helpful. I'd definitely go back and try their other items.

Michelle N.

Yelp
Service/wait: Came here on an early Monday afternoon. We ordered the crab claws, waited a little bit, and then they told us that they didn't have any crab claws so we got fried crawfish tails, so we ended up waiting around 20 mins for food. Service was okay. Food (2/5): We came here because we saw it in an "anti-tourist" youtube food vlog, but the place seemed like a tourist trap. The char-boiled oysters (3/$13) weren't that exciting and oysters didn't seem fresh, a little bit rubbery. They also came with stale bread. However, the fried crawfish tails ($14) had some pretty good seasoning, but a bit tiny. That was understandable, considering that September is not crawfish season.

Lesley B.

Yelp
Just meh. Not horrible, not great. We saw it in a you tube video, so we thought we'd try it. Portions are small, prices are high, which is what I expected in the French Market. Nothing to write home about.

DD D.

Yelp
I stopped at their booth at the Zydeco Fest. These fried crawfish tails are absolutely delicious. The servers were very friendly. Food came up hot, fresh, and fast. I'll definitely be swinging by their place for more.

Marc B.

Yelp
The flavor for the crawfish was good, but the size of the batch we got were small. Deep fried pickles were good. We were lucky to find a seat ao no problems there. Easy to get to straight off the 49 street car.

Rebecca A.

Yelp
Super friendly staff, sooo yummy. The boiled crawfish was flavorful and reasonably priced. It's a must try while you are here!

Erik E.

Yelp
In the sea of mass produced knockoffs and a horde of tourists J's is the shining star of the French Market. Place your order at the counter, which is decked out with a visual display of most of their dishes so you know what you'll really get, and the cashier will call your name/number when the food is ready. Although the line may be long, you'll wait just about 10-15 minutes. We've ordered things like the soft shell crab ($15); Seafood Quesadilla ($12); oysters on the half shell ($20 a dozen); fried pickles ($5); and more. Our favorite item so far has surprisingly been the item we had the least expectation on, the Seafood Quesadilla. It is absolutely stuffed to the brim with crabmeat, shrimp, and crawfish tails, plus just a little cheese to keep it all together. What a pop of flavor. Definitely a must order. Looking at getting oysters? Belly up to the oyster bar located across the aisle and you'll see your oysters shucked right in front of you, plus with some added humor from those working (get ready for the dance moves and puns, like mothaShucka). Just remember you do still have to order at the counter. These oysters are larger in size than area restaurants we've stopped at before and are definitely fresh and delicious. Why not five stars? The prices. Maybe if this was a sit down restaurant those high prices would be fine. I get it, we're all tourists here *who don't know better* but no need to gouge us.

Atul S.

Yelp
Best tasting food with very high prices. 2 shrimp tacos for $10 and other oyster dish on 4 bread was for $14. Prices are like dine-in restaurant but taste wise no complaints at all. They taste fresh and fusion of flavors. Loved the food here. Lady at counter was so sweet too. She even came back and checked on us. These tacos are by far best tasting shrimp tacos we ever had.

K W.

Yelp
A dozen oysters shucked by hand in front of you for the price of $24...say enough. Each oyster was naturally sweet and briny. Ask for it the "Kimbo Way" - Kimbo is the man and I guarantee these are the best oysters you tastsd in your life.

Clarissa D.

Yelp
This place is so good! Its Located in the French Market with so many different restaurants and shops there its hard to choose but the display of their food was out front so you can see what you're getting which is a Plus. Everything was so fresh and warm probably the best thing I tasted. I would definitely go back each time I'm in NOLA.

Sergio A.

Yelp
Round two! I don't know how but we got there and there was no line, so I took advantage and ordered my favorite oysters in New Orleans. Fresh and delicious as always. Love this place!

Michele P.

Yelp
Tourist trap! I get that rent is through the roof and Covid caused chaos, but this place seriously ought to be ashamed of themselves! 6 fried crab claws for $12.00 with a whole bunch of lettuce! You can literally go anywhere in this city and get triple this for 10.00! And we had to wait 30 min for it to arrive! I also ordered a dozen raw oysters, but it's been 30 min and apparently it will be another 30 according to the employee before that comes! You guys really should be embarrased to represent NOLA like this! Update: the raw oysters came after 90 days and we watched the shuckers beat them to death (never ever have seen this in my entire life in New Orleans with experienced shuckers) and they were not cold and still stuck to the shells with a dab of cocktail sauce! I can only hope the tourists don't realize how bad this is and they'll want to order and eat oysters again!

Jasmine K.

Yelp
If you don't know how they do it in the boot, then you might need to make your way down to J's Seafood Dock at the Market in the French Quarter. Tricia called me "bay-beh" and fed me fried pickles and I promise you, I want to be her kin! I came back as they were closing for some BBQ shrimp and my goodness, I know why they had a line! I don't know what Alex and Joe are doing in the back to that food, I don't know how they are talkin' to it but whatever they are saying must be reeaalll nice because those sea creatures came out hot and ready, like a bride on her wedding night! Seriously, if you hit Nola, your trip isn't certified until you hit J's up. They'll teach you the difference between spicy and SEASONED! They learned this from somebody's Mama and let's not talk about the oysters... Tell them Jasmine from Austin sent you "bay-beh".

Brandon S.

Yelp
Aside from the bits of mud, these oysters were great. Clean em up and add a little bit of lemon and tabasco sauce

Caroline S.

Yelp
This is a restaurant in the French Market. With so many options, I stopped here because I saw that they sold fried soft shell crab, which I love, but didn't see anywhere else in the market. The crab is very well seasoned, crisp, and flavorful. It was some of the best soft shell crab I've had. My only complaint is that the crab is small, and for $18, I wish it had been bigger than I wouldn't have left feeling hungry. I didn't get a picture of it because I bashed on it immediately, lol.

Janine M.

Yelp
While walking through the French Market looking for food, I passed J's Seafood Dock. I glanced at the menu and saw shrimp tacos. I ordered shrimp tacos and a small fries. I got 2 tacos and they were surprisingly very good. They skimped on the shrimp though. One had 4 shrimp and the other had five. I noticed the menu had all sorts of different items but I think I made the best decision for my taste buds. On the way home, it occurred to me that I never received the fries I ordered. But oh well, I will get them next time I'm there.

Vanessa S.

Yelp
Good stop to grab something when walking around the market. Got jambalaya and it hit the spot

Vee V.

Yelp
Deep fried lobster, my new love. Buttery, crispy, decadent, and dream worthy. Yeah, you want it. J's was a great little find for my husband and I. We've never had fried lobster. Now I'm obsessed and plan to deep fry lobsters at home until I get it right, my poor husband has to be "stuck" eating all of my attempts. This stand is along the back of the market, which is a great spot to stroll through after your meal. The girl behind the counter was very energetic and friendly. We also tried the fried oysters on the spinach crostini's and crawfish beignets. The oysters were bursting with flavor. The beignets were good, but I was wishing for more of the crawfish flavor. This was one meal I wish I did a second time before we ended the trip or at least came back for a fried lobster snack.

Avanti J.

Yelp
Oysters were fresh & delicious. Had great conversation with the shucker. We had been search Nola for something spicy for 2 days and their boiled shrimp finally hit the spot. Would go back in a heart beat

Edgar Z.

Yelp
I only leave such reviews as a warning. You dont know until you try. Well we tried & paid the price. First, it was expensive. The portions of what they serve were small, so we figured that you can't go wrong with a dozen chargrilled oysters. Unfortunately for them, we had had some already at another restaurant & they did not come even close. The oyster's had all kinds of broken off pieces of shell in them, the seasoning was bland & the cheese on top wasnt melted. Second, they were not busy & it took 20+ minutes to get our food. I was about to say something when I made eye contact with the lady that charged me & I think she remembered I wasnt just posing for a picture. I wanted my food. The hopes of getting that "dock to plate" experience was not what we have enjoyed elsewhere. Sorry NOLA, can't sugar coat it.

Jason P.

Yelp
Pristine oysters in a al fresco, albeit very touristy atmosphere. Excellent shrimp boil and crawfish when it is in season, too.

La Jonet W.

Yelp
Unfortunately not. Had to wait damn near an hour for peel & eat shrimp & struggled to peel them. They were stuck to the shrimp. NOT ENJOYABLE AT ALL. Was to scared to ask for a refund because you know that NOLA attitude, but anyway the oyster creole looks good plated, but it's terrible, too much sauces no flavor on the oyster... Trying to support a Black Business this was a fail, food went in the trash‼

Erica E.

Yelp
My meal from J's was probably the best things I ate while in New Orleans for 5 days and I'm not even exaggerating! While strolling through Frenchmen, I decided to grab lunch somewhere nearby and make my way over to the French Market. While looking over the food that was available, my eyes were drawn to the nautical decor of J's Seafood Dock and ventured over to check out their menu a bit further. A lover of seafood, especially Oysters, I was drawn to their descriptions of their meals on the chalkboard that sat idle in the market pathway. After a bit of review and chatting with the Cashier, I opted for the Oyster Creole (Freshly shucked oysters fried then placed on top of a bed of Spinach & Artichoke, drizzled with Remoulade Sauce) and Crawfish Pie for under $19. Best $19 I spent! The food was made fresh, as I walked around a bit to check out the vendors nearby and then heard my name called about 10+ minutes later. I quickly grabbed my trays of food and took a spot at a barstool nearby and pulled an Abita beer out of my backpack from earlier and got ready to dig in. The Oyster Creole blew my mind!! Huge oysters perfectly fried and paired with the delicious Remoulade went down so smooth with a local Abita Amber beer, especially once I squeezed some fresh lemon over them. I wanted to make sure I was an equal-opportunity eater so I was going back and forth between the Oyster Creole and the delicious Crawfish Pie. Crawfish Pie is one dish that I had never had until this recent visit to NOLA and man, have I been missing out! As I bit into the Crawfish Pie, I could immediately see and taste the delicious Crawfish etouffee-like filling that was accompanying the light & flaky crust. It didn't stand a chance! As the French Market was preparing to close up, I tried to quickly finish my meal but savoring every bite and almost wished that I had ordered more!

Debbie M.

Yelp
This place is one the highlights for my New Orleans trip !! First off, they have a shucker that freshly shucks the oysters in front of you which giving you a show to watch. We also ordered fried crab claws and boiled shrimps. And let me tell you this: THE BOILED SHRIMPS IS A MUST TRY!!! It is the right kind of spicy and I can eat it everyday!!! It is that good that I wanted to buy some to go to bring it back to California! I am still thinking about this place almost everyday after this trip. P.S: Don't forget to count how many oysters that you get from the oyster shucker because we found out later from the pictures that he only gave us 11 oysters instead of a dozen. However, I'm still giving this place 5 stars even though we had one less oyster by mistake. BECAUSE IT IS THAT GOOD!!!

Andrew C.

Yelp
It was our last afternoon in NoLa, and despite warnings of "thou shall not eat oysters before a flight", we just had to sneak some more in! Got a half dozen, and I must say- BIGGEST oysters I've ever seen. Super fresh and tasty as well. Horseradish was nice and spicy- sometimes it's hard to find it with real kick. The gent shucking them was a real character and a real treat to talk to! Ps-The flight went smoothly.... Fresh oysters! Highly recommend!

Beryl D.

Yelp
Honestly the best seafood I have ever had! it is nicely nestled in the French quarter giving you are the New Orleans feels. The crawfish is amazing and very well seasoned. The fried oysters over spinach and artichoke dip and toasted bread is the best and the fried lobster tail is a must. All of these dishes were reasonably priced as well. The staff was very friendly, Courteous and prompt. For real, authentic New Orleans cuisine, I definitely recommend this place! We came back four month later, and the food is still good! I got the fried oysters over spinach and artichoke dip and toasted bread.. still the best. I also got the fried soft shell crab.. very flavorful and the shrimp and grits! Definitely gotta try them out while in NOLA.

Lynne C.

Yelp
Great crawfish & shrimp to go! Love it Boiled CrawfishBoiled ShrimpCajun Boiled Crawfish

Irene M.

Yelp
Must try while I'm New Orleans! Located in the French market there are a variety of options but the smell was enticing and I am glad I came here. Everything was made fresh and is full of flavor, the charbroiled oysters are absolutely delicious!!! Of all the food I had while in New Orleans This was hands down my favorite, highly recommended!!

Marina M.

Yelp
They say they close at 5, but we got there a little before 4:30 and there was no one/sign at the register. After waiting 10 minutes the cashier came out of the back (we could see them through the doors while we were waiting) and rudely informed us the kitchen was closed. We asked if we could still have the fresh oysters because that doesn't require the kitchen. Although the shuckers were still serving people, she said "like I said the kitchen is closed, my manager is leaving...". If they just had a sign we would have known. We weren't able to come back to try the food, so unfortunately I cannot comment on that.

Sonny K.

Yelp
Great food find The Chargrilled Oyster were excellent - not quite as good as Acme House but better then Drago's and Royal House Order 2 soft shelled crabs - and there were awesome and we loved them NOTE: one of the soft shell crabs was small and broken so they also gave a pound of boiled crawfish. Boiled crawfish were good - not the best but the best free food of the week :P Crawfish Beignets - dense, oily, and not tasty - least favorite of the meal Shrimp and Grits were good What a great Lunch

Robert C.

Yelp
Came here on a recommendation from a Thrillist video. I really had such high expectations especially since a local was promising it to be a hidden secret. Egh. My French fries were limp. Some were undercooked but the place was so busy I didn't want to fight the line for another order. I ordered a soft shell crab on the open face bread. The gal even recommended the open face bread. However, what they gave me was a soft shell crab on lettuce. Luckily, I was able to bypass the line and let her know that the bread was missing. Her response, "Oh yeah. I'll put it in for you." Waiting. Waiting. After nearly 10 minutes I still didn't have a piece of bread. Shouldn't that be an easy task? Also, at this point my crab is cold from waiting for the bread. Ugh. Finally, the bread comes out and it's slathered with butter that is EXTREMELY salty. I'm Asian so I love sodium but this I could not do. On top of that the soft shell crab also had salt on it so that coupled with the salty bread was just too much.

Silvie C.

Yelp
Ended my trip with J's in the French Market. Coupled with a pint and a pina colada smoothie from the booth to the left, my date and I were ready to take on more oysters. We split an order of jambalaya, a dozen charbroiled oysters, a dozen raw oysters, and a pound of boiled shrimp. The charbroiled oysters were definitely not as good as the ones on Bourbon Street but the raw dozen made up for the others' shortcomings. Skip the shrimp, and come during crawfish season. I got my hopes up thinking crawfish was available off-season as it was still written on the chalkboard menu Definitely made the mistake of not ordering the shrimp and grits--stuff looked mouth watering. This place is expensive but everything is served up fresh and made to order, it seems. Don't forget to tip the bad motha shucka!

Erica C.

Yelp
I watched several Youtube vids of food and restaurants before going to Nola and saw J's seafood dock featured on a couple videos. It was very exciting to find this place located inside the French market. I gotta say, the service was friendly however they were a bit disorganized, even for a not so busy day. I felt completely bad because they called us for a plate that wasn't ours and they couldn't take it back because we held it. The food wasn't as great as I was expecting. Mind you, the food was good, and the seafood was fresh! but there wasn't that wow or flavor factor. The chargrilled oysters had way too much cheese and was overpowering the oyster. The crawfish beignets were a bit bland, too much batter where I couldn't enjoy the seafood. I enjoyed the service and presentation, but my expectations were a bit too high. I would definitely go and try their food again next time I'm in the area.

Usman P.

Yelp
Located next to an abundance of small restaurants, this place had charm because of the employees. They were very fun and allured me and my sister into picking out a few dishes. One gentleman who worked here was singing and entertaining everyone while shucking seafood and generally being pleasant and uplifting. I'd ordered the fried shrimp on toast with I can't remember which marinade, but it was pretty good. A bit overpriced for what I received (4 small pieces of bread with fried shrimp and a sliver of salad on the bottom), but the hits were the shrimp and grits and crab beignets. So delicious and something I'd definitely order again.

Zachary C.

Yelp
Man the best BBq shrimp, Charbroiled oysters and freshly shucked oysters we have ever ate!!!! I mean they had us hypnotized we couldn't leave this spot dozen after dozen we give this a 10 star screw the 5star rating and the hospitality down home atmosphere was amazing!!!!!

Greysy C.

Yelp
Charbroiled oysters, shrimp and jalapeños cheese grits, crab claws, crawfish tails. Everything was soo good. So worthy will definitely come back

Nathan M.

Yelp
This place exudes freshness! Oysters were delicious as always...but sit and the oyster bar and enjoy the folks shuckin' them...they are HILARIOUS!!! We also had the boiled shrimp and shrimp tacos, I would highly recommend the tacos...my wife went back for more!
