Once again, thank you foodbabyny, Mike and Alex Chau for not leading me astray. In fact I think Mike is the reason why I started croissant hunting in the first place! Digressing.
Julien might hold first place for my favorite spot in New York City for a baguette sandwich, a title previously held by Supermoon Bakehouse, and one never touched by Le Petit Parisien (not salty enough, bread lacking) or Frenchette Bakery (wrong ham, imo). So at Julien yesterday my head was spinning at the four offerings of baguette sandwich--Brie, salami, turkey, and ham, all served with thick swipes of luxurious European butter and each with their own accoutrements. I was about to buy all four but then remembered that the last time I bought two jambon beurre at Supermoon, the second one went stale before I had time to eat it the day after.
Brie sandwich: complete with butter and grainy mustard. Definitely eat this one at room temp for the sake of the Brie. And I'm not a religious person but I thanked a higher being for placing this sandwich so close to my condo.
Salami sandwich: I swore I lost my mind yesterday and would've double fisted both sandwiches, were it not for me doing some light work tasks on the computer. The addition of cornichon was a nice touch here. Nutty gruyere is always a good idea. Drooling just thinking about this again.
Also sitting in my fridge are two traditional croissants and one pain au chocolat for enjoyment long after these sandwiches are gone.
Julien had a lovely selection the Monday I went in. The patron before me was asking about tarte tartin, which the cashier made it sound like it was a special item to be run on certain days of the week. I saw other items like the highly praised macarons, spinach and ricotta quiches, spinach and salmon something, almond croissants, pain au raisin, tarts, and various things I cannot recall.
My fellow peers have made a good point when it comes to sticker shock here, or lack of a price sticker and therefore a shock at checkout. Hopefully the business sees these points and eventually posts price/item signs for each pastry. I had a nice chat with the cashier guessing what the savory items were but it didn't occur to her instead explain to me what all the pastries in the display case were for the day, nor provide patrons with a complete list. Not mad, just making a note! It was fun checking my knowledge.
