We had the Lemon Meringue Tart which was really good but keep in mind if you’re not a lemon person this wouldn’t be for you the flavor is strong, the meringue was delicious & we had the Blood Orange Twist which it was amazing you need to keep this on the menu forever! The place is cute & very small. There is no seating. Also, they won 2nd place of the Best Croissant Competition in NY, People’s Choice & Best Original Creation. The staff are friendly & helpful! I’ll come back to try other pastries because everything looks really good!

My brother told me to check this place long time ago. At last I visited and was very pleasantly surprised of such great quality and flavor of the goods of such small place. They have probably the best croissants that I ever had. I also like their macaroons, very rich flavor and not overwhelmingly sweet (as they usually are). I definitely would like to come back and try their other backed goods.

To start, I wanted to try this place out through TooGoodToGo. First thing that went wrong is that I was waiting in line, the owner cashier did not greet me or say hello. Fine I thought, he’s busy. I look around and wait. A man comes in, he’s white, and right away the owner greets him and says he’ll be right with him. Okay, so the owner treats people differently by race. It’s worth noting this place is rather small, so it’s fairly noticeable to make out who entered or is standing in line. Once I was next, the app was giving me issue so it took 30 more seconds than usual for me to pull up the order confirmation. When I did, in a nasty and condescending attitude, he said to me “looks like you finally figured out how to work the computer.” Absolutely uncalled for, not necessary, and what a loser comment. You could tell he felt better about himself because he made his comment with a smirk. I wish he would put as much effort into his poor humor, as he could into creating a welcoming customer service for all New Yorkers. Good pastry shops in NYC exist by the dozen. People come back to restaurants not only if it’s good food, but if you feel welcomed to return. This is too bad because restaurants and shops close often in NYC, and it’s sometimes when owners like these, fail to realize how to keep customers from coming back. One out of the three pastries was good. Hopefully the owner can work on being less rude + racist and more cordial. Won’t hold my breath to it.

The almond croissant was soft, moist and delicious

As someone who grew up surrounded by a wide variety of authentic French baguettes, I may be a bit "exigent" when it comes to judging one, but I found Julien Baguette a bit underwhelming. While the taste was decent, the bake wasn’t quite there for me, it lacked the golden crispness and structure I’ve come to expect from a traditional French baguette. The shape also felt off, not quite capturing the slender, elegant lines of a classic baguette. To be fair, in the U.S., the word "baguette" often gets used more for its French flair than its authenticity, and many customers may still find this one satisfying. If you’re not too picky about technical details, it might hit the spot. But if you’re chasing the exact texture, crust, and chew of a true Parisian boulangerie, you might be left wanting. The store itself is inviting, clean, and aesthetically pleasing, and it's clear they take pride in the overall branding. However, it doesn’t seem like baking is done on the premises, which might explain the lack of freshness or artisanal touch. With so many options for baguettes in the city, and of course, in France—this one didn’t quite do it for me. I won’t be going out of my way for a second try, but I do appreciate their effort to bring a taste of France to Brooklyn

Be sure to come here early if you want to score yourself some delicious baked goods. By mid afternoon many items can be sold out. From sandwiches to pastries, there's surely something for everyone. Unfortunately I have to give four stars as the server was slightly rude and didn't follow my cutting instructions after asking for my preference. Oh well -- the quality of food made up for it all!

Tried a variety of cube croissants and savory croissants from here. Particularly liked the raspberry tart. Very flaky and loaded with raspberries. All the cube croissants were pretty tough and didn’t seem fresh. The egg and veggie quiche was good as well.

Google
The last time I left a review for ANYTHING was years ago….that being said I literally just tossed and turned in bed enjoying the citrus madeleine! It felt so French…am I Proust now?? And the girl at the counter was absolutely lovely. But seriously I’m shocked that I had such an amazing experience enjoying that madeleine.

Yelp
The croissants are so good! Not too oily or buttery like some places, but still flaky and flavorful. The ham and cheese sandwich was also great. Cute little spot.

Yelp
I am always running past this area and I can't believe it took my forever to go here. But one day, I made it! It's a grab-and-go spot and I just have to rave about their cinnamon croissant roll ($6.50). The pastry was so good that I can't even imagine how scrumptious it would be when heated. There are other delightful treats available, both savory and sweet, and I hope you find something here for your liking.
google avatar

Yelp
A great bakery all around for grabbing a sweet treat! They have some savory treats with their baguette sandwiches and their sweet pastries. They're highly rated for their croissants which 2nd place often and rightfully so. The croissants are light, well laminated, and flaky. No seating inside as it's a grab and go spot but there are benches outside. There is also a discount if you pay in cash.
google avatar

Linda C.

Yelp
Walked past the gorgeous display case when I was exploring Brooklyn one day and had to stop in for an almond croissant! A really delicious almond croissant, super flaky and the perfect amount of filling inside. Tip: pay with cash for a little discount, I believe there's a tiny fee if you pay with card!
google avatar

Vicky P.

Yelp
Wow this place has stunning and delicious croissants!! The croissant sandwiches are so flaky and light. I got my ham and cheese croissant sandwich heated up and it was an amazing lunch. The almond croissant is one of the best I've had. The fig tart was very delicious as well. You can't go wrong with anything here.
google avatar

Huai E.

Yelp
Ordered the pain au chocolat, 2 ham and cheese sandwiches, and a pain Aux Raisins or escargot. The pastries were good and sweet. The sandwiches were alright, didn't have much of a taste. Service was quick and friendly though.
google avatar

Yelp
Yum! This place is out of this world! The French shop is mini size. There are 2 tables and couple of chairs outside on the sidewalk. There will be a line when entering, and when someone opens the door, the butter aroma hits you in the nostril. The service is fast and friendly. I got the chocolate eclair, Madeline, Canelé and cheese sandwich. The sweets are really well made with perfect texture and sweetness. I will definitely try their croissants next time, they got 2nd place so it must be good. Their cheese sandwich is fancy; only seen on Food Network. I heat it up when I got home and liquid cheese spilled out. The crust on the top is like baked Mac and cheese.

Mia V.

Yelp
Horrible customer service! The girl at the front is extremely moody and charges you according to that mood. She charged me tax on a baked good that wasn't heated up or served with utensils but prior did not. When i questioned it she ignored me and just handed me the change. Wouldn't look me in the eyes. Poor representation of a business. Food used to be good but now it's overpriced and mediocre. Will not be returning for sure!

Yelp
Cute bakery in the UES. There's a decent amount of seating in the back and the whole cafe has this charming French style. They even sell some French grocery products as well. It was easy to find seating on a Sunday afternoon. Pistachio Twist ($8) - Definitely on the pricy side, but it's big enough to share between two people. The neon green dye threw me off and felt very unnecessary. It's stuffed with pistachio cream that's light and fluffy. The pastry itself tastes super buttery, but I do wish more of the pistachio flavor came through. My friends got coffee, but the cups were leaking from the bottom rather quickly. Their ham/cheese croissant sandwiches looked good as well.

Yelp
Amazing pastries and very nice staff! Thankfully I don't live that close or else I'd be here daily.

Toni G.

Yelp
What can you say? There's a reason, Julien has been so highly rated for their croissants and the whole menu has been prepared with the same skill and care. My personal favorite is the Escargot (aka pain aux raisins) which has made it near impossible to enjoy this treat elsewhere. Not just for breakfast, I've tried the ham and cheese croissant and several of the baguettes, all delicious. Staff is friendly and add to the neighborhood vibe.
google avatar

Yelp
The guy behind the counter is super friendly and welcoming.this bakery is a gem for pastry lovers! Their apple pies are pure bliss - a perfect mix of sweet apples and flaky crust. And don't get me started on their croissants - light, buttery, and irresistible! Their coffees it's OK Oh, and their macarons? Divine! Each bite-sized treat is bursting with flavor. It's the ultimate spot for a quick, delicious grab-and-go snack. You'll leave with a smile and a satisfied sweet tooth!

Yelp
The food here is always fresh and delicious! Some of my favorites are the berry tart, any of the savory sandwiches, and the chocolate croissant. You basically can't go wrong with any of the pastries or quiches here. The only thing is, they are pricier than average, but you are paying for the quality!
google avatar

Samantha D.

Yelp
I saw their cube croissant all over social media, but what I really came for was the berry tart. I believe they use laminated dough for most of the pastries, so I wasn't missing out on too much by not ordering the croissant. The pastry wasn't as flakey and buttery as others I've had before, but the fruit was really fresh. The sugar glaze balanced the slight tartness of the berries. I liked that they piled on the berries as well. The custard was just the right amount of sweetness. They give a discount if you pay with cash. One table outside, but otherwise plan to take your pastries and/or drink to go.

Yelp
Strong 4, maybe 4.5. Everything we've tried has been delicious, and the service is super friendly! We really like the lemon meringue pastry, the pain au raisin, and the savory croissant sandwiches. However, prices are quite high, so it's hard to visit regularly. There is no real seating area, so expect to purchase your items to go.

Yelp
Stopped by here for a quick breakfast bite! The strawberry tart was amazing!!! So flaky, and chewy, the strawberries were very fresh and the mascarpone cheese was delicious delightful little treat! Highly recommend!!!

Yelp
Great selection of french pastries. I think because NYC has so many superb boulangeries, I was not that impressed. We got the following to try: 1) Creme Brulee Madeline, 2) Kouign Amann, 3) Almond Croissant, 4) Almond Chocolate Croissant. The creme brulee madeline was interesting. It was very soft and tasted like a vanilla creme brulee muffin. Kouign amann was good but not the best I have tried. It was not that flakey or buttery. It tasted like a healthier version of a kouign amann. Almond croissant was ok. Not very flakey or buttery and felt flat. Almond Chocolate croissant - very disappointed with this. The chocolate filling tasted like nutella and the nutella was very empowering. This croissant was not that flakey or buttery. Super friendly staff and cute shop.

Yelp
Excellent--I could have eaten everything. Sorry no pictures as we were too busy eating. I had a flan tart, goat cheese & tomato quiche, and a ham/guyere croissant. Tip--bring cash for a discount

Yelp
I'd passed by Julien Boulangerie numerous times since its recent opening and found their pretty pastries and macarons prominently displayed tempting. On two occasions I wandered in on a weekend late afternoon when nearly everything was sold out. I finally decided to try one of their almond croissants on a Saturday afternoon. It was a superb product--light, airy, buttery, with a sweet almond paste. A very high-quality pastry of fine French baking technique. My main complaint is the lack of pricing transparency. None of the pastry items have any labels, for that matter. When I asked the store associate about the cost of the almond croissant, he himself didn't know. He said, "Four-something." It was actually $5 ($5.44 with tax). It seems like adding labels might help both the employees and customers alike. Founded by a Parisian baker trained in French baking in both Paris and Francois Payard in New York, Julien of Julien Boulangerie has otherwise brought us a wonderful gift by sharing his craft in Park Slope.

Yelp
Winner has competition. While Winner elevates American baked goods, with many hits and a few misses. Julien elevates the French. This fifth Ave Boulanger creates French pastries and breads that are tres fab. Ate: Chocolate Madeline Whole wheat cranberry bread Total: $14 Chocolate madeleines are unusual and this one dark at the edges with pieces of chocolate baked in, is the best I ever tasted. The loaf with its dark edges, lots of edges was flavorful perfection as some whole wheat breads can offer a lower flavor profile. Known for the chocolate croissant Julian has your French bread & dessert fantasy.

Yelp
Once again, thank you foodbabyny, Mike and Alex Chau for not leading me astray. In fact I think Mike is the reason why I started croissant hunting in the first place! Digressing. Julien might hold first place for my favorite spot in New York City for a baguette sandwich, a title previously held by Supermoon Bakehouse, and one never touched by Le Petit Parisien (not salty enough, bread lacking) or Frenchette Bakery (wrong ham, imo). So at Julien yesterday my head was spinning at the four offerings of baguette sandwich--Brie, salami, turkey, and ham, all served with thick swipes of luxurious European butter and each with their own accoutrements. I was about to buy all four but then remembered that the last time I bought two jambon beurre at Supermoon, the second one went stale before I had time to eat it the day after. Brie sandwich: complete with butter and grainy mustard. Definitely eat this one at room temp for the sake of the Brie. And I'm not a religious person but I thanked a higher being for placing this sandwich so close to my condo. Salami sandwich: I swore I lost my mind yesterday and would've double fisted both sandwiches, were it not for me doing some light work tasks on the computer. The addition of cornichon was a nice touch here. Nutty gruyere is always a good idea. Drooling just thinking about this again. Also sitting in my fridge are two traditional croissants and one pain au chocolat for enjoyment long after these sandwiches are gone. Julien had a lovely selection the Monday I went in. The patron before me was asking about tarte tartin, which the cashier made it sound like it was a special item to be run on certain days of the week. I saw other items like the highly praised macarons, spinach and ricotta quiches, spinach and salmon something, almond croissants, pain au raisin, tarts, and various things I cannot recall. My fellow peers have made a good point when it comes to sticker shock here, or lack of a price sticker and therefore a shock at checkout. Hopefully the business sees these points and eventually posts price/item signs for each pastry. I had a nice chat with the cashier guessing what the savory items were but it didn't occur to her instead explain to me what all the pastries in the display case were for the day, nor provide patrons with a complete list. Not mad, just making a note! It was fun checking my knowledge.

Yelp
Beautiful little bakery in North Slope. Lovely array of macarons, beautiful bread, pretty array of pastries and a nice looking coffee selection as well. Appears that they are baking everything in house. Updated after 2nd visit: We've had a few things from here and everything is very good but, I do have to comment on pricing: they #1 need to post the prices prominently. I went in for a second visit today and again, while everything is very, very good, I had sticker shock when I was charged $30 for 3 4-inch tarts. If I'd seen that the tarts were that price, I would have ordered something else. I commented on the pricing and was told by the person behind the counter that their prices are high because they import many of the ingredients. I'm deducting a star so the owners can see this and realize that #1 that's not a good practice and #2 they need to be transparent on pricing. That said, everything really is very good, I'm just having to pull back slightly on my enthusiasm after the follow up visit.

Yelp
Really enjoyed this place. Felt like a proper French patisserie. Drinks: ordered an almond milk cortado and it had the right texture and ratio of milk to espresso. It was good. Only nit was the espresso was not that strong or as strong as I like it. Wife ordered an iced almond milk latte and she requested less ice which the barista obliged -- she said the drink was creamy and one of the better ones she's had. Food: when in a French cafe one must order the croissant which I did. It was amazing. Buttery, crisp and flaky... just done the way it's supposed to be. Overall liked this place and will go back. Next time will try a baguette sandwich and some macarons!

Yelp
I don't know what to tell you all. I had the berry tart. Now I'm addicted. If anyone gets a chance to try anything else. Please let me know. I'll be going again tomorrow.

Yelp
Weird, I thought I wrote a review for juliens but for some reason it's not here. Juliens is hard to miss due to lack of signage but everything about this place is great. I've come in a couple of times and don't have anything bad to say about anything. Their coffee products are smooth and made well, their pastries are also very good - the pear tart is probably my favorite Staff are also very friendly and helpful. If you ask for your opinion, they seem knowledgeable about all of their products

Zarah F.

Yelp
Here's the short and sweet: Skip it if you're looking for superb laminated pastry. Get it if you want something better than a typical cafe pastry to pair with your coffee, and are willing to pay for something pretty and overpriced. Ordered a custard tart, almond croissant, and a croissant cinnamon roll. What I was expecting: buttery, flaky, and well executed pastry, especially for the price. What we got: dry-ish, not buttery or flaky, and a little bland. Custard tart? Maybe get it. The custard tart was the best one, it had layers of filo dough (not croissant) and was well baked with a nice crunch. The custard was not too sweet but unfortunately not flavorful despite supposedly having orange in it. The custard really weighs down the shell. The almond croissant? Skip it. Missing that nice crunch and layers of almond, this was a little chewy, like it had been sitting out for a while and absorbing too much moisture. It lacked an almond flavor. Skip it. The cinnamon roll croissant? Don't get it. Dry and not buttery. It was surprisingly not well laminated or balanced, and was a little too sweet with crystals of pearl sugar on top (I did like the crunch they added, though!) It advertised being filled with cinnamon cream - it was not. Bland and a very light cinnamon flavor. Skip it, and get the monkey bread at winner if they have it instead. Seemed like it was old almost.

Yelp
Wonderful. I love their traditional items and also their - perhaps this is the wrong word - esoteric offerings, like a square croissant. Go for anything pistachio filled; you will not be disappointed.
google avatar

Sabah S.

Yelp
Yes . Defn yes . Parisian vibes . Delicious pastry Tried their raspberry tart . It's just perfect . Flaky . Crunch . Buttery . I don't even know how to describe it . It's so so good . Kinda pricey though . But I think similar prices for other French bakeries around . Which I think is also pricey . Guess it's good for an indulgence . Have a couple canelés I need to try still
google avatar

Kern C.

Yelp
Just about the only thing I like from this Bakery is their Madelines. Specifically, The creme Brûlée vanilla Madeline. The Harlem location makes it far superior than the ones at this location. Another issue was The guy at the counter entered the wrong items in the computer and almost charged me for a more expensive item before I corrected him. This is a mistake that should never happen. Im just turned off by this location and probably won't be back .
google avatar

Erika P.

Yelp
Stopped by right before closing and they still had a pretty large selection left to choose from. I went with the pear tart which was really good & not overly sweet. The guy at the register was super friendly and answered my questions easily. The only reason I gave 4 stars is because the prices are a little steep in my opinion. Other than that, a very cute bakery!

Yelp
Great sweets!! The croissant filled with almond spread and chocolate was so bomb , also the kids loved the macarons

Yelp
Come to Julien Boulangerie for a tasty treat. Everything looked tempting and I enjoyed the chocolate Parisian flan (which looks like a chocolate tart). The pastry was flaky and delicious and the chocolate flan was rich and smooth!

Yelp
Even though I'm blessed to live near great bakery like Cannelle, I was tired of the food scene in Astoria so I decided to go check out new bakeries in Brooklyn. Julien Boulangerie is first of the trips I'd probably make to Brooklyn to venture for more great food in the future. I was there a little past 11 am on a Saturday and was a little worried that it may be crowded, but there was no line and I was able to get in quickly. On the other hand, Simple Loaf Bakehouse that was located a couple of blocks away was super packed and there was a line out the door - I wonder why, since they seem to be both excellent bakeries. The croissant tart with caramelized baked apple with mascarpone cream looked incredibly fancy and I was intimidated but decided to get one since I've never seen this pastry anywhere else. The croissant tart shell is super crispy even after a day in the fridge and tasty. The tart is so big that it's taken me a few days to finish it. It is still pretty fancy so next time I get it would probably be on some celebratory occasion. I also tried the creme brûlée madeleine, which is a little crunchy on the outside because of the caramelized surface. It is pretty sweet so I recommend going for chocolate or regular madeleine if you want it that sweet. Baguette is also great. As expected the goods here are pricey, but I would visit again for a change.

Yelp
Hello Everyone, this is a great French Bakery. I saw the fig tart and knew I had to stop by for my fiancee's birthday. I ended up buying so many tarts, croissants, lemonades, cheese and baguette to surprise her. I really went for the fig tart, which she loved. Everything I bought was great reminds me of Paris all over again. This place is small and very cute but the food packs a punch. I miss amazing treats like this, I almost forgot it was a Monday. My fiancee has told me we will be stopping by once again very soon. She took so many photos I have to add them to this review. I'm after 2 things here next time, the carmel apple tart and the croissant with the ham & cheese. Also I loved the lemon and raspberry tart it was my favorite. I love lemon flavored treats. So next time don't just walk by, stop in and ask questions. Then just buy a load of things to try. Until next time!

Yelp
Picked up a chocolate almond croissant to go. Soft and a bit flakey. Service was patient as my wife inquired about every single pastry they had. Croissant was $5.50.

Yelp
Alright - it is very soon to drop a 5 on a business BUT this spot literally just opened last Wednesday, they've got sooo many pastry options that look beautiful and tasty, and given what a nightmare 2020 was for businesses I want to get Julien Boulangerie off to a great start. With that said, the only thing I had was a strawberry verbena macarons and that is the only thing you can trust my opinion on so far. For the record, it was absolutely delicious and I'm writing this review within 30 seconds of getting it. It had a strong flavor and great texture, which makes me super happy because the last Macarons I had at another spot were utterly disappointing. For future, I want to return and try their quiche as well as this beautiful little pastry that had figs in it. They also have a pastry that basically looks like a hamburger but instead of beef it has strawberries on the inside. I can't say I'm not curious. The service was exceptionally friendly. As far as drink options, it looks like they have an assortment of teas, coffee drinks, turmeric latte, chai latte, and more. Welcome to the neighborhood, Julien Boulangerie!
google avatar

Elizabeth N.

Yelp
Great, solid pastry spot. Things are delicate, crunchy, not overly buttery or sweet. Tried their pistachio cream filled pastry, pain au chocolate and an amazing pear almond tart. It's a bit pricey but each piece took a lot of time and work. It's reminiscent of supermoon textures but the flavors are more traditional.

Yelp
Since an amazing bakery with so many little treats! Was in town from Los Angeles and on a morning walk picked up couple things to try. Staffs were super friendly and all the pastries we picked up was made to its perfection! Must try if you are in the area.

Yelp
Delicious pastries and great customer service. Might be in a bit pricier side, however, worth a splurge.
google avatar

Allison S.

Yelp
Clean and transparent. The owner is a gregarious guy that makes you feel like family. He loves dogs which makes me love him. The croissants are consistently fresh and GOOD. I wish they made scones. And the Brooklyn location never has the croissant cubes that are insta famous.
google avatar

Yelp
Love this place... great fresh pastries and breads. Staff are always helpful and able to explain a pastry or answer a question. I enjoy their pantry items from Paris. Reminds me of my recent vacation.

Yelp
A little expensive but honestly this is the best almond croissant I've ever put in my mouth . 100% recommend for a little breakfast & stroll. No seating , super small, but really worth it. Service was really fast and of course the servers are kind like always .

Yelp
One sentence review: the pastries were overpriced, didn't taste fresh, and did not have much flavor. I'm always excited to try out new pastry spots in Brooklyn, but was especially disappointed in Julien Boulangerie. The photos of their pastries looked incredible and unique, which is what drew me to them. My girlfriend and I got the square blueberry lemon croissant and the pistachio croissant. We paid over $20 (including a 15% tip) for both. If the pastries were incredible, I could (maybe) justify paying $10 each. However, both pastries were just okay. They did not taste very fresh as they were both a bit chewy, and both did not have much flavor. I've tried many different spots in Brooklyn, many of which have cheaper, fresher, and more flavorful baked goods. I'm normally not one to leave poor reviews, but I feel so many places in the city overcharge simply for aesthetic. If you explore Brooklyn, you're bound to find some better options.

Tiramisuzy F.

Yelp
What a disappointment. Walked in, and there were about only 6 pastries to choose from. I chose a macaron since it's the only gluten-free option he had, and it was completely stale. If you're going to charge over $3 for something that's a little bigger than a coin, please have some integrity and make sure it's fresh.

Diana V.

Yelp
First time coming here. My son treated me to a pre Mother's Day desert. We got a box of 12 macarons. Raspberry, passion fruit, banana, cookies & cream, apricot, Nutella, cotton candy, and pistachio. So delicious . Hard to choose a favorite. Definitely will be stopping by again.

Yelp
Um maybe it was an off day but we tried a few things. A knotted croissant filled with pistachio cream and decorated with neon green stripes, a pear tart and a canelé. The pear tart was very good, tasted fresh with nice texture. The knotted croissant seemed stale in texture, flavor and scent. The pistachio cream inside was good but the croissant itself did not taste good. The canelé was also stale and had a strange flavor. I was taken aback tbh. I recently had a canelé from Madman Bakery on University and it was the most devine thing I'd ever tasted. There are so many amazing French bakeries in NYC. I won't come back to this one. I hate leaving a negative review but I just had speak up. Service was very friendly.

Yelp
Really good pastries and coffee! The place is very clean and better than most bakeries/cafes. The service is exceptional and the prices are high. You're paying up for quality but it's worth it. I often get a mixed berry tart, a madeline cookie and an apple tart - highly recommend!

Jake B.

Yelp
This is one of my new favorite places. Some of the best breakfast I've had in a long time. Particularly the coffee, which was exceptional. To our surprise we ended up returning to this place many times over our trip. The almond croissant was unreal good, as were the eclairs. Would strongly recommend!

Yelp
Tried Julien's for the first time at Smorgasberg. The presentation wowed me and a bunch of other passerbyers and many stopped to get something. The pastries were crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside- the perfect consistency. I would travel all the way to park slope to experience Julien's again.
