I have been going to Julie's for years, and I don't live near Alameda! But when I am there, I often meet friends and clients here, especially during the summer months because it has a chill vibe, great selection of drinks you won't find in most run-of-mermaid places, and a large rear patio with a lot of tables and space.
I tend to prefer rear patio urban joints like this, where you can talk and get away from the sounds of making coffee (the front room here is fairly small, just a few tables, in comparison to the patio) and enjoy the air, sun and space without tripping over the laptop remote office types tethered to the wall.
Don't get me wrong, I can set up my socially adjacent coffee shop remote office anywhere with the best of the Tech Heads, and I carry a multi charging cable menagerie for all my devices, with an extension chord! Thankfully, there isn't that vibe here. It's funny but there are several green mermaid places that I know that blocked off the plug outlets, removed tables and chairs, closed the bathrooms, and went from gathering places and coffee offices to just take out coffee. Maybe they should go the the real Italian model, where you would get a small demitasse cup of expresso standing at the bar counter, no chairs, where you could get your cigs, too, before taking your Moped to work. Sort of 7 Eleven meets Espresso machine.
Check the menu photo here for the unusual variety Julie's offers, including kombucha, tonics, teas, and of course, coffee.
Probably not the same Julie, but long ago in SF SOMA there was a Julie's Supper Club I used to go to, and I think there used to be a Julie's in Oakland's Temescal area.
