The Carlton Tower Jumeirah

"Set the scene A cravat’s-throw off Sloane Street, footsteps from Harrods and eyeballing the private, pristine 14,000ft Cadogan Gardens directly opposite—which guests have access fobs to—The Carlton Tower Jumeirah is in one of the most prestigious locations in London. Its clientele, therefore, reflects the city’s eclectic elite, with exquisitely dressed Indian wedding parties (one of which set off brilliant orange flares outside the entrance during our stay) rubbing shoulders with Mediterranean football managers (José Mourinho was at the next table with his grown-up children during our Friday-night supper); business people talking shop over Americanos at breakfast and well-to-do octogenarians sipping afternoon tea alongside deliciously fragranced Middle Eastern twenty somethings. Fans of supercars will want to loiter outside with the exceptionally smart and friendly doormen. The backstory Originally managed by Hotel Corporation of America, The Carlton Tower switched hands and brands several times before the UAE’s super-player Jumeirah Group took it over in 2001. Part of Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum's personal corporate portfolio, the hospitality heavy-weight’s roster includes the lion’s share of the country’s top hotels and restaurants, including the iconic ‘seven-star’ Burj Al Arab, as well as hotels everywhere from Shanghai to Bali, the Maldives to Mallorca. In 2019, The Carlton Tower Jumeirah then closed for a £100 million renovation, the most substantial in its history, from which it fully re-opened in August 2021. While its Sixties tower-block exterior hasn’t altered, pretty much everything inside has been gutted and overhauled, from the Mahogany-heavy decor to the removal of the central pillar that previously took the entire building’s weight. Today, a striking chandelier made up of shards of crystal hangs over a woodland-style sculpture in the same spot. The hotel's new, pared-back but stylish look is refreshing—and couldn’t be better timed with the boom in London staycations. (Not quite done with the renovation yet, however—it still plans to renovate its main bar.) The rooms Elegant and sophisticated, abstract, marble-like paintings in colorful, complimentary tones hang throughout the hotel, holding everything together like a chic Bottega Veneta belt. Actual marble then sits atop the tables and throughout the bathrooms (rainforest showers are noticeably huge), while king-size beds are high and deep, with dark green leather panelled headboards and bluetooth speakers that look like retro radios at the bedside. There are whizzy Dyson hairdryers and a pillow menu, and clothes pressing is included. The overall feel is as though a smart but friendly Parisian couple has moved in and seriously fired up the hotel’s style and sex-appeal levels, injecting Chanel rugs, doorstop art tomes and dark but light-handed colors that are far removed from its previous ever-so-slightly bland five-star feel. Alternatively, you can believe it’s now actually your apartment, thanks to the off-the-charts personal touches prepared for each guest, and the lengths that are gone to for you to feel at home. Not only do your slippers, leather room keys and child’s fluffy bath towel come embossed with your initials or name, but a framed photo from your wedding is placed next to the bed (I imagine, only if you have public social accounts—and have had a wedding). All rooms have mini Central Park-style views over Cadogan Gardens—similar to those from the formerly Jumeirah-run Essex House in New York. Go for a balcony suite or ideally luxury balcony suites with interconnecting rooms if you’re really pushing the superyacht out. Food and drink Flagship restaurant Al Mare is somewhere you’d visit whether you were staying at the hotel or not. Sumptuous interiors are all Art Deco pendant lights, parquet wooden flooring, dusty pink booths and dark, deep velvet chairs; service is funny and affable without being overbearing, and the relatively concise menu from Italian executive chef Marco Calenzo (fresh from London’s Zuma) includes fresh takes on seafood, meat and pasta: the black truffle rigatoni, king crab and veal chops are stand-outs, best followed by the Tiramisu or Greek yogurt with ice cream. The kitchen is also happy to cater to your appetite, serving smaller portions should you want to try an additional dish between you. Don’t miss the chef’s crackling fresh pastries come morning – or the personalized message in the froth of your flat white (or initials imprinted in the hefty ice cube in your cocktail the night before).Neighboring ground-floor venue, The Chinoiserie, serves possibly the prettiest afternoon tea we’ve come across: a rainbow of crustless finger sandwiches served on pastel floral china plates in the 18th-century style suggested by the restaurant’s name. The tea is served right up until 5.45pm; later than you’d find in most London hotels, and it’s surprisingly buzzing in the early evening. A herbal tea collaboration with Kew Gardens is set to be launched soon. The spa For those familiar with it, the stand-out feature of the hotel is the naturally lit second-floor swimming pool with double-height glass ceiling, peering out over the city’s architectural mishmash, lined by cabana beds and set off with a raised Jacuzzi. While we found the pool a touch cool (82.4°F), there was an impressive range of toiletries in the changing rooms—and it made for an excuse to have a steaming hot shower back in the room afterwards. One of Dubai’s finest spas, the London branch of Talise has five remarkably large treatment rooms, with Aromatherapy Associates sessions, 11Skin massages and Omorovicza facials on the menu. All rooms include access to The Peak Fitness Club as well as the pool, sauna, steam room and spa. Up on the eighth and ninth floors, the former lives up to its name with phenomenal views ideal for looking out onto as you spin through those miles. The members' club lounge area, with its mighty high curved glass wall of windows, panelling and pendant lights is like a wonderful London secret—one of the most refined spots to read the paper and sip an espresso high above the noise below. The neighborhood Quite possibly one of the smartest neighborhoods in the world, Knightsbridge is best known for its supreme department stores (Harrods, Harvey Nichols), boutiques and stream of black cabs and expensive cars. Thankfully, Cadogan Gardens muffles the din of all that, and the view from The Carlton Tower Jumeirah’s balconies can be surprisingly serene, especially in the early mornings. There is a more intimate vibe to the area too, footsteps from the hotel: turn into Kinnerton Street for a fairylit modern-day, fake-grass covered piazza complete with bewildering animal sculptures; walk on for ancient little pubs and al-fresco dining down cobbled mews. There’s also Hyde Park to explore just above the hotel, Chelsea just below, and Green Park and the little-known Buckingham Palace over to the East. The serviceService here is at once the height of white-gloved, etiquette-led tradition yet also charming, fun and eager to please. Given the levels of personalization noted above (under ‘The rooms’) and experienced throughout our stay, it should come as little surprise that all staff members knew our names. The uniforms are also worth a special mention—women wear silky, show-stopping, full-skirted dresses; one design during the evenings, one for the day—the kind that will make you want to go back upstairs and put on something more special for the fun of it. For families The service doesn’t disappoint, either, when it comes to families—children are made a great fuss of from the moment they arrive; greeted by their first name and asked whether they would prefer a cuddly George the royal guard or Carlton the cat. They can also have their Polaroid taken for a sweet little passport which they are then encouraged to ferry around to the various corners of the hotel to be stamped and returned to reception for a further (nicely absorbing) little gift. Renowned queen of weaning and kid’s food whisperer Annabel Karmel has designed the children’s menu, which means that it includes numerous healthy dishes that should get eaten (the spaghetti bolognese served with pasta ‘wheels’ in a car-shaped plastic plate went down particularly well). The restaurants have smiles, pencils and coloring books at the ready at all times, and the suite included a high-quality white wooden cot as well as a welcome caterpillar made of fruit and a hamper filled with treats to take home: the aforementioned hooded towel with their name embroidered on it, mini Child’s Farm bottles, another super soft cuddly toy. There’s also a set splashy time at the pool so you can all get in without worrying about getting anyone else’s hair wet. Eco effort Natural, non-toxic products by Grown Alchemist are provided in bathrooms, in refillable bottles.Accessibility for those with mobility impairmentsBoth restaurants and bars are on the ground floor, every level is accessible by lift, and there are two dedicated step-free hotel rooms.Anything left to mention? Forgotten your swim shorts? The spa reception can offer you disposable ones in small, medium or large sizes, in a fetching blue-and-white Hawaiian print. Also, hotel guests are welcome to join all gym classes—including one outrageously fun-looking one that involves dancing to power ballads by the likes of Whitney Houston at full volume." - Becky Lucas

We recently stayed at the Jumeirah Carlton Tower in London for the first time and I honestly can’t imagine coming to London again and staying anywhere else. From the moment we arrived, everything about our experience was seamless and special.||We were kindly upgraded to a City View room which made our stay even more memorable. The staff were outstanding: polite, genuinely happy, and incredibly approachable, not just with us but with our children as well. It’s rare to find that level of consistent warmth across all interactions.||Our room was impeccably maintained each day and I particularly appreciated the thoughtful approach to sustainability, whether it was the mindful reuse of towels and bed linens or the fact that extras like toothbrushes or body lotion were provided when needed but not wasted by default.||The hotel itself is simply stunning. Every detail from the spoons to the plates, body products, and even the toothbrushes speaks to impeccable quality and luxury. It’s a place where you truly feel taken care of.||As Muslim travelers, it meant a great deal to find a room equipped with a shutoff (bidet), which is quite rare to find in UK hotels. That small but meaningful touch made our stay even more comfortable.||We recommend this hotel 100% to anyone visiting London and as for us, we’re already planning our return. A solid 1000% from us!|

The Carlton Tower Hotel is located in the heart of Knightsbridge and has spacious, modernised rooms with spectacular views (particularly at the upper floors). The staff is attentive and very friendly. The breakfast buffet was a bit limited for a 5* hotel but overall totally fine. Very cool lounge and fitness areas. The hotel is very family friendly. Perfect for a city trip with kids if you’re looking for a high quality stay.

Reuniting with my friend after over 14 years at the Jumeirah Carlton Towers was an experience that truly exceeded expectations. The hotel's sophisticated ambiance immediately set the tone for a memorable evening. We indulged in the escargot finger foods, which were not only exquisitely prepared but presented with an artistic flair that showcased the culinary team's professionalism. Each bite was a delight, perfectly complementing our expertly crafted drinks. The impeccable service ensured we felt entirely at ease, allowing us to focus on catching up and reminiscing. It was the ideal setting for such a special reunion, combining luxurious comfort with an atmosphere that made our long-awaited get-together truly unforgettable.

Amazing location overlooking a beautiful private garden, makes you feel like you've walked into a lovely, quiet, peaceful little oasis even though you are right in the heart of central London! Such a wonderful hidden gem. We had an excellent experience there. Rooms are spacious, sparklingly clean and elegantly furnished too; really appreciated the lovely touch of personalised slippers. Breakfast was delicious too, especially the French toast. The highlight definitely has to be the breathtaking, sweeping views though, and we would highly recommend taking a walk in the private garden.

My family and I visited Jumeirah Carlton for an afternoon tea for a special occasion and it was one of the best we have had in London. ||The sandwiches, scones, cakes & tea varieties were absolutely top notch with beautiful ingredients for each. We have visited many London hotels for afternoon tea but this was the best!||Thank you to Kieron and colleague (sorry didn’t get his name) nothing was too much hassle, your service was exceptional thank you to both of you, we are already planning our next visit.

Stayed here for 2 nights on our trip to London. Upon arrival we were given a warm welcome and given hot towels and iced peach tea. We stayed in a junior suite which was lovely. Spacious and spotlessly clean. The personalised slippers and personalised make up towel was a lovely touch. We had 2 balconies overlooking Cadogan Gardens. The breakfast was lovely - I don’t normally eat pastries but I did here!!! The staff at breakfast were so welcoming and friendly - particularly Lenny - he was just brilliant - he made our morning - such a great guy and an asset to Jumeirah. We took advantage of the in house car service and the chauffeur Carlo is an absolute legend - such a great guy. It’s people like him and Lenny who made our stay so fantastic and we will remember them both forever. |I would definitely stay here again - we have stayed in several Jumeirah hotels in the Middle East but this was our first one in the U.K.|It’s in a really good area - so close to Harrods and Harvey Nichols. If anyone is thinking of booking here then do it! You won’t regret it. I hope that management read these reviews as I would love Carlo and Lenny to get some well deserved recognition for being such lovely, welcoming people! |Thanks again and we would love to come back in the near future!

Yelp
Came here for afternoon tea. Excellent service- attentive, offered suggestions, explained the courses, and kept my cup filled. 35 different tea varieties available at anytime. Started with an iced genmaicha, which was excellent. Also tried London-Paris, Earl Grey, fresh mint, and tonic teas. All were wonderful. The food was fresh and plentiful. My favorite course was the scones - unexpected creative flavors that were delightful. Also enjoyed the finger sandwiches and cakes. All fresh and flavorful. The space was lovely - cozy and well-appointed.

Yelp
It's a great hotel , and understated - low key hotel. It's Not the Dorchester nor Claridge's and while delightful and sumptuous hotels - it take a 1/2 step back. It used to be the Hyatt Carlton tower. Very elegant hotel , Harrods can be seen overlooking Knightsbridge, on Sloan street Walk a little further and ur at the Slone Sq. & Kings road - home of punk movement in late 70's to mid 80's .. Sex ( Vivianne Westwood) vinyl shop , Boy of London , numerous cavernous shops , selling cool boots to the latest in punk & offering tie dyed Mohawks - often spotted Johnny Rotten or Sid Vicious in the day. Great time to be Young & in London !!!

Yelp
The hotel is very stunning and prestigious. And while the staff are generally friendly, they confused my reservation with another at reception and took a while to clear everything up. Additionally, my luggage took over an hour to be sent to my room by the concierge, but I'm sure this was due to the receptionist's initial confusion, but it really shouldn't have taken them over an hour and for me to have to contact the concierge desk directly. I think there should be more communication between concierge and the reception desk in cases where there are confusion or a mixup with a guest's reservation. Also, since it was the receptionist who made the error with my check-in, it should have been her to communicate this error and clear up anything with the concierge so that delivery of my luggage would not have been so badly delayed. Overall, my stay was pleasant despite the confusion at check-in. The rooms are fully stocked and their restaurant, bar, and tea section are top notch.

Yelp
My Husband and I had the most wonderful afternoon tea at the Chinoiserie. We highly recommend this venue as the best we've been to for a long time. The greeting we received was breathtaking and unforgettable. Thank you from our hearts, Hank Wang at Service one for your exceptional service, and for Saida for such a warm welcome. The newly designed interior is absolutely beautiful and chic. Superbly comfortable. Nicola was amazing and attentive, he also introduced us to the most impressive, aromatic seasonal teas. Michele was so kind. Grazie di tutto!! The food was spectacular!! Awarded World's Best Pastry Chef, Jessica Prealpato is brilliant, her style is unique, delicious and incredibly well balanced. High on taste, yet light and presented with such style and flair. We will return again and again to savour this sensational experience. Thank you also to Andrea Salerno, Chinoiserie Manager for your kindness. We'll be back very soon.

Yelp
Quizzically described by its owners as a 'landmark experience', the Jumeirah Carlton Tower is the mother of all Knightsbridge Hotels, a beacon of extreme wealth, extreme opulence and, unsurprisingly, extremely high prices. I've never stayed in the hotel myself but have dined here on a couple of occasions with my nana or popped in for a few drinks after a meal. And I'm afraid to say that I categorically don't require a harp player with my chicken Caesar and I find it hard to keep food down when all around men are gambling most families yearly income on a measly game of poker. Other than the predictable ostentation of such a place, the Jumeirah Carlton Tower is nice enough but just not my style. For a cosier, less gauche hotel/dining experience mozey along to the - similarly Jumeirah group owned but ineffably more chic - Lowndes Hotel just a few minutes away.

Yelp
We went there for lunch. They probably have the best Club Sandwich in town - I could eat 10 plates!! It's so light and delicious. The pasta was also lovely and cooked to perfection. The service was friendly, wonderful tasting desserts, pots of tea were replaced from time to time and the scones were delicious! The atmosphere is very relaxing and chairs so comfy I could have slept in them! The service is great - the staff are attentive without being overbearing. Perfect place to stop for lunch while shopping. Highly recommend it

Yelp
My Dearest Jumeirah, Exuberance is what you exceed in. You are so catering and attentive to my every need and want from your crisp champagne to the fearless heels in your display cabinets in the lobby. The gracious bell men, and kind front desk employees gave me impeccable service on every ring down to the front of the house each time. Although my stay was short, I tried to use every and any amenity offered. Your spa service was patient and relaxing(Ms Jouee- I can't thank you enough for making me feel like 1mil pounds). The restaurant fast, quick, easy and painless....With a few bartenders that were sincere on the eyes. Your fitness facilities are top of the line and gave me no excuse not to burn a few calories. The car service was on time and succeeded in cleanliness each ride.(Gracias to the witty Simon) Each evening the clientele was bit comical, but what do you expect when staying in the mecca of their ideal scene, location and posh neck of the woods. In the past, I have been a Mayfair kinda woman, and I think its time to make the split and join team Jumeirah. I anticipate my next travel destination in the middle east will have a Jumeirah within the vicinity and visiting another one of your fine establishments. Cheers, Hill

Yelp
After watching Cinderella at the cinema the previous week, I was still very much in fairytale princess mode, so I was pretty excited when I saw that the Chinoiserie at Jumeirah Carlton Tower was doing a Cinderella themed afternoon tea, specially created by Executive Head Pastry Chef Stephan Will. There was some soothing music being played by the resident harpist - I do love places that have live classical music. Our afternoon tea was served as depicted on their website - it looked so pretty that we spent the first few minutes snapping away with our cameras. The top tier had the savoury sandwiches - I liked the roast Scottish beef, watercress and creamed horseradish sandwich, but was not quite a fan of the quail egg tart which was a bit dry. The second tier had a pretty array of sweet desserts shaped into various miniature objects related to Cinderella - marshmallow carriages, yuzu tart clocks, white chocolate shoes, and white chocolate brownie and popping candy wands. And the final tier was some buttery plain and fruit scones, served with jam and clotted cream on the side. The afternoon tea was nicely presented, although the sweetness was maybe a bit too much for me towards the end. Unfortunately I am also not that big a fan of white chocolate, but if you are then you would probably enjoy this. Service was overall very pleasant and efficient, and we had a lovely relaxing afternoon. Click on my blog link for the full post with photos x http://dancing-in-high-heels.blogspot.co.uk/

Yelp
We originally got a very smelly room but once we complained the manager everything was taken care of very quickly. The manager appeared very quickly, he was apologetic and moved us to another room! We are staying here probable for the 10th time and I would recommend it to anyone coming for a short stay in London.

Yelp
Nicely laid out hotel, with good standard of 5 star accomodation, the food and service are equally as good. A bit pricier than my usual London hotel (royal garden) but I suppose its more convenient for Harrods and some of the theatres. However it lacks some of the homeliness of Royal Garden and the personal touch that I have been used to there. I would stay again here but only if my usual place was full.

Yelp
Yes, 2 stars for an upscale Knightsbridge hotel where I stayed during the 2012 London Olympics. The location is superb, etc, but every night I laid down, I could smell stale cigarette smoke infused in the pillows. Not a pillow. All the pillows.

Yelp
The clientele is entertaining to watch, but I couldn't bring myself to enjoy a cocktail in the lounge after my workout due to some horrific odors emanating from most of smoke-soaked patrons. The fitness facilities are top notch, and were Carlton just a health club, it'd be five stars.

Yelp
I couldn't decide between 1 and 2 stars. Yes, an opulent hotel. But the prices are sky-high, and as the Motel 6 ads say in the US, "once you close your eyes at night we look just like the big boys." Save your money for something else.
