Recent Bay Area Restaurant and Bar Openings to Know in December 2025 | Eater SF

"After a fire that halted operations, this spot is back in business as of Wednesday, November 26, now at a new location and still serving the same familiar crispy katsu and jaru soba." - Paolo Bicchieri

An Old School North Beach Restaurant Closes After 50 Years | Eater SF

"A fire has closed this tonkatsu favorite indefinitely as of Monday, October 20. Run by the Kim family, the restaurant wasn’t damaged directly, but the strip mall it calls home was impacted so severely that customers cannot safely enter the building; the family was already at work opening a new restaurant in Emeryville, and launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise relief funds." - Paolo Bicchieri

Google
ive come here twice in the past few weeks and it’s been an amazing experience. both times i got the anshim katsu with miso soup. the katsu was flakey and light, unlike anything i’ve ever had before. i have the cheese katsu on my list to try next time i come. the only downside the prices can be pretty steep. however, remember this is in the bay area where dining out can get pretty expensive. for the quality of the food and the ambiance, i feel like it’s a great place to eat every once in a while when you want something special.

Google
Best katsu I've had. Incredibly tender and flavorful meat with light crispy breading. Decent portion size and I did not think I would be able to finish but it was so tasty that I did! Highly recommended.

Google
SO DELICIOUS! Anyone who’s ever had mediocre katsu know how the meat can get all chewy and the breaded cutlet is so sharp that it hurts your gums. jungdon katsu’s meat is so tender and juicy and it’s cooked so well that it’s crunchy when you bite into it but the roof of your mouth won’t be crying. Also the miso soup is legit. One of the criteria I use to judge the quality of a place is how bad or good the miso soup is. At some places, it’s so watered down that instant miso is better. Jungdon’s miso soup is legit!!

Google
Great addition to the neighborhood! Really nice atmosphere and authentic katsu. Most katsu places have pretty dry, overcooked meat with the breading falling off but the katsus here are tender, juicy, and the breading still unbelievably crispy and on the meat. Can’t think of any other place in the Bay Area that serve better katsu.

JC

Google
Food was delicious, atmosphere was clean and relaxing. Service was ok. You pay upfront when you order which is impersonal and kind of weird. I hate tipping before you’ve gotten your food. I love the new location as it’s super easy to get to via the hollis bus and a close walk to berkeley bowl.

Google
Lifechanging pork katsu!!! I got the Anshim Katsu and the pork is incredibly tender, the fry and crisp was PERFECT. One of the most delicious and tender katsu I’ve had and most definitely the best in the Bay Area. Service is super friendly, good amount of seating, really quick for food to come out after ordering.

Google
You absolutely have to visit and eat here. Delivery is delicious too, but if you come in person and try the warm katsu, you’ll be amazed.

Hard day? Nothing makes it better than ordering takeout of the literal BEST chicken katsu in the East Bay. I like to order myself the Deluxe Chicken Katsu whenever I’ve had a tough day, and it always makes it better. The $32 price tag feels a bit steep at first, but the amount of food that comes with it is easily enough for two people — or, in my case, a dinner and a lunch for they next day. Two perfectly flaky and crispy chicken breasts, three scoops of rice, two scoops of their house potato salad, a miso soup, and a generous heap of finely shredded cabbage with a sour vinaigrette. It’s the perfect dressing to cut the heavy chicken and savory katsu sauce. Every texture is unique and works well with the others, making for a delightfully varied meal. I’ve only ever ordered from here online, but I imagine the service and ambience matches the same level of clean, simple detail that the food so perfectly nails.

Yelp
Love this place, been to their Danville location, ordered takeout from the ghost kitchen, and now the new restaurant on Hollis. Personal fave dishes for my wife and I are the classic pork loin (Deungshin), which is slightly fattier than the tenderloin, and the fish katsu. Extremely well fried, very light crisp and the portions are huge. Katsu is one of my favorite meals generally and I've been to a lot of places in the Bay + worldwide. Def think this is one of the top katsu places in the Bay along with Demiya / Curry Hyuga although the styles are different. Owner is very nice and friendly, have always received great service from her and the staff.

Yelp
Needed to door dash dinner for my daughters in Berkeley one night and stumbled across Jungdon- am I glad I did!!! Everything was packaged beautifully and arrived still warm. The katsu was DELICIOUS!!! We ordered both the pork and fish and both were perfectly fried. It came with rice and cabbage salad- everything from the breading in the katsu to the house made sauces were AMAZING! We went to Korea this past April so I feel I can honestly say this is really, really good Korean katsu! A pleasant surprise to find a local restaurant that serves this quality Korean food! Definitely will order again- a must try if you're in the area!

Yelp
I was really excited to try this katsu place that took over the old sushi place! Loved the Anshim Katsu which was tasty and a huge portion size. They use a really crispy flaky batter for the breading which I really like. The shrimp tempura was good though the breading was too thick... Perhaps to make to shrimp look larger haha. Curry side was good as well. Cabbage salad was finely shredded as it should be and the tasty house vinegrette dressing went perfectly with it - super glad it wasn't a creamy dressing otherwise that would've been too heavy.

Yelp
Perfect meal for movie night! They are finally reopen in Emeryville! There was only one table when we went but they had several takeouts lined up. Highly recommend checking out their new location since they just transformed from a ghost kitchen. It was nice seeing their business success and I will continue to support them! Both Chicken Katsu & Anshim Katsu are great, crispy and light batter and juicy meat! The box comes with shredded cabbage which gives it a refreshing kick to the meal!

Yelp
I've ordered from here three times, i think. The portions are big but the quality is not great. The cooking oils used are old, the sauces are thick, sweet and syrupy, gross to my taste.
google avatar

Yelp
I've been ordering from their ghost kitchen location for years, so I was stoked to see that they moved to a dine-in location. Delicious food in cute digs, run by a very friendly family. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Excited to try this place because I love katsu. Batter for all pork and shrimp were great and not too heavy. They know how to pack their orders - the parchment paper def helped catch some of the oil from frying. Loved the cabbage and the mayo given. The sauce for the katsu was a little strong for me and my partner but the texture of the katsu was perfect! I also wish it was sit down so I could enjoy it fresh but it was really good as take out though!

Yelp
I was craving some tonkatsu and dropped by the ghost kitchen this place is located in. Placed an order and was able to pick up in 15 or so minutes. I got the Anshim katsu, which came with rice and shredded cabbage and 2 pork tenderloin cutlets cut up. I love the type of breading they use, which is crispier and lighter than others. The cutlets are separated by an oil-absorbing paper, which is a nice touch. The meat was cooked perfectly, and still juicy. It comes with katsu sauce, but honestly I preferred the cutlet by itself. But the sauce was tangy and tasted good. They give tons of rice and the cabbage comes with a dressing that compliments it well. The food came out hot, showing the cutlets were freshly fried! There is no seating since it is a ghost kitchen. It can also get crowded because there are a lot of pick-ups. But I really enjoyed the meal and would go back. Maybe for the cheese katsu.

Yelp
Delicious!! My friends and I were craving katsu! And this place did not disappoint at all! The katsu was crunchy and fresh! I enjoyed the side dishes as well! I would definitely come back!

Yelp
Ventured across the bay bridge and wanted to try Jungdon Katsu! This place did not disappoint! Using the QR code, I placed an order for pork tenderloin katsu. Waited for about 10-15 minutes in the sun. Then I got a text saying my food is in the locker and I just need to pick it up. Just follow the directions. Very easy! Too bad there are no seats. My friends and I wanted to eat a few pieces fresh before driving off to another location. So we grabbed forks and dug right in! You can taste the freshness because the panko was light and meat was juicy! Very good and enjoyable! Wouldn't hesitate coming back and trying the rest of the menu! But we aren't in the east bay much but we'll remember to come back if we're in the area! 5/5

Yelp
What's a good way to get to know someone you just met? Take them out to lunch. My friend and I live super close to this joint and I really wanted to try it so off we go. This is a foodhall so there's little to no interaction with a human. We placed our order online and about 20 minutes later, you receive a text notification that your food will either be ready for pick up at the counter or in the locker. Anshim Katsu - holy smokes. I mean, I don't eat too much katsu but when I do, most taste pretty standard and nothing amazing. But this. Prepared to blow your socks off. The light flaky crispy panko crust was perfect. The meat was tender. I also appreciate that they separated the sauce for the katsu and the salad so that it doesn't get soggy, smart. Overall, this is the best katsu I've had in the bay. Will come back to try the other katsu's.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a ghost kitchen. Once you order it online, you pick it up inside where there are lockers for you to pick up your food. So will need to show your screen with your name to the computer and they it will assign you a locker. You open the locker with your phone. It's a pretty cool concept! Love the foood!!

Yelp
Surprising find in the East bay. It was exactly what I expected it to be. Light and crisp katsu don. The menchi katsu was a bit dry, and the accompanying sauce was helpful. The portions are good for more than person depending on how hungry you are. The potato salad was okay. You can order on the side, $10 for 4 small scoops. Overall, not a bad option if I found myself on that side of the East bay.

Yelp
The katsu was super fresh and crispy. Perfect texture. Reminds me of good katsu I had in Hawaii. This is definitely the best tonkatsu I have had in California. My only complaint is this is not a sit down restaurant. I had to go find a place to sit and eat it while it was hot. There were so many delivery pickup people at the lockers when I got there. The pickup system was easy to figure out for me, but may be too complicated for non-tech-savvy folks like my parents. I wish they had a sit down restaurant.

Yelp
The. BEST. Katsu. EVER! First thing to note, Jungdon Katsu is located in a food hall where you order through tablets then the food is put in a locker when it's ready. It is not a sit down restaurant, don't be confused like I was lol. They offer different types of katsu but the cheese katsu was yelling my name. Mozzarella wrapped in pork tenderloin, how could you say no?! You can tell the food is made fresh and the portions are huge. The katsu itself was flaky, crispy and savory! The cheese in the katsu exceeded my expectations and the sauce was a plussss. It's pricey but worth every penny! Jungdon Katsu has been added to my MANDO STOPS if in the area. 1000% would recommend this place to all my family and friends!

Yelp
Had an errand up in Alameda so we ordered ahead at Jungdon for pick up. It's a ghost kitchen so can't speak to the ambiance but the person who handed me out my order was nice! We ordered: Cheese Katsu: imo this was too much cheese - it was really salty and I couldn't even taste the pork. parts of the cheese were also cold and in their shredded form instead of melted together. Deluxe Anshim Katsu: katsu was fantastic, breading and pork were super soft and the breading tasted like fresh bread rather than panko. i don't think i would get the deluxe version again though, it came with a lot of extra cabbage, potato salad. i'm not sure if the deluxe came with two katsus instead of one, but one was enough for me anyway. Curry sauce: not worth it

Yelp
I ordered the pork loin tonkatsu. I liked how they made a hole on the top of the takeout container to allow the heat to vent out. I read that the portion size of the tonkatsu was large, but didn't believe it. When I opened the lid, I found 2 pieces of tonkatsu. It came with tonkatsu sauce and dressing for the chopped cabbage. The tonkatsu was breading crispy and flaky. The only soggy breading was on the underneath of the bottom piece. The pork loin meat was tender and not tough to chew. I found the katsu sauce to be a bit sweet and thinner to the katsu bottle sauce I use. I added shiracha sauce to give it more body and heat. Having a place that sells tonkatsu nearby is a plus for me since most of the times restaurants only sell chicken katsu.

Yelp
This place has an interesting concept and I don't mind it. It reminds me of when I travels to Japan. Efficient - only when you order ahead of time- WHY? because you pick up your order in a locker when the food is ready- They will call your name or receive a text message confirmation. Parking is a bit hard but they're a plenty. Now for the food! The portions are HUGE and yes it's pricey but I feel it makes sense with how much food they give you! The crispy chicken katsu is delicious! The quality is worth 5 stars. We got the chicken katsu!! I highly recommend it! I also tired the cheese katsu and I thought it was okay. I usually like cheese dishes but for some reason it was okay- maybe the temperature played a factor as I had it cold. Overall I highly recommend this place! Grab it to go and eat it somewhere nice

Yelp
Such an odd concept with a ghost kitchen but it was also really efficient. I ordered ahead of time online and when I first arrived, I wasn't sure what I was supposed to do. There was a lady calling out numbers and assumed she'd call mine but after a while I tried entering my order info into the computer and a locker popped open. My order was fresh and crispy! My gf and I shared an order of: Deluxe Combo Katsu: includes cheese katsu and normal. The cheese Katsu was good but a bit too rich. It's hard to eat a lot of it. One piece was enough richness for me. The regular katsu was absolutely delicious! The batter was amazing and the pieces of katsu were fresh and juicy. Even the salad was delicious! The combo was SO MUCH FOOD! My gf and I shared and we could barely finish it. We actually saved the potatoes because it were completely stuffed. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Overall the food quality was amazing! The area to pick it up was a bit sketchy but once you learn how to pick it up, it's an easy process. There were a ton of ride share delivery services totally confused how to get the food. I was super happy with the meal however and I'd definitely be back.

Yelp
Excellent katsu, crunchy and tender Good side dishes Large portion, 1 is more than 2 meals
google avatar

Yelp
Loved it! Portion was huge! The pork was so tender my eyes were rolling!! And the panko was homemade! Amazing! The way it was packaged ensured it stayed crunchy even with delivery! Loved the miso soup too!
google avatar

Merra K.

Yelp
This was not a sit down restaurant like we expected and that's on us. However the meal was not crispy or up to what we had in our minds so we'd probably give this a skip personally. However it was quick service.
google avatar

Audrey C.

Yelp
Food: This is probably the best katsu I've had in the Bay that comes closest to the quality of katsu in Japan and Korea. The breading is very light and flaky and the meat is tender. Asian-quality katsu at USA prices Portion Size: The portion sizes are huge! They give you almost 2 portions of katsu in one box and a heaping serving of sushi rice and cabbage salad. Very good value for $20 a box. Pickup: Pick up is at a locker in the food hall. We picked up our food 25 minutes late and it still tasted good when we brought it back home.

Yelp
Jungdon Katsu operates out of a ghost kitchen at Longfellow Foodhall. For this reason, it can be easy to discount Jungdon as some place that serves mediocre food. When I showed up to pick up my to-go order, the food hall was in utter chaos: the small pick-up room was packed with Uber Eat, Doordash, Grubhub, etc. drivers waiting around to pick-up their orders for their customers. Despite the chaos, I managed to pick-up my order at exactly the estimated time. I ordered the Deluxe Anshim Katsu -- a double order of their pork tenderloin breaded cutlet, served on a massive bed of rice, with cabbage salad & Japanese-style potato salad on the side, along with some miso soup. The portion was absolutely massive. Priced at $28, it feels expensive when you place your order but the portion you get is easy enough for 2 to share for two meals. The start of the show -- the katsu, is well-fried: the cutlet is cooked-through, juicy, and the outside is crunchy without being oily. There are two containers of katsu sauce included, though the sauce is more more vinegary than I'm used to. I wish there was some kewpie mayo or other kind of dressing on the shredded bed of lettuce, but I see now after the fact that that's an add-on option for $2. Overall, the katsu here is spectacular. I would definitely stop by again. Great value given how large the meal is.
google avatar

Aron N.

Yelp
Ordered the fish deluxe meal. It was very good. The dish was cooked perfectly - crispy and moist. Loved the soba. My dinner mates ordered the chicken and pork. Both were on the dry side. I wish they served chicken thighs versus the chicken breast but it was still tasty. I would definitely come again. It's just too bad that parking is hard to find.
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped by for some katsu takeout, and I was so confused at first. This isn't a restaurant, but more of like a pick-up in a locker at a food hall situation. Ordered online for pickup, and when I walked in the front door, I saw a bunch of food lockers and people either picking up for Ubereats or patrons who also looked kind of confused like me. There are some workers behind the counter, but most people seemed to pickup in the lockers. I didn't have any instructions to pick up in a locker since I ordered through the Jungdon website, so I headed to the counter to ask about my order. They so neatly placed my order in a large paper bag, and I was on my way! The katsu itself has a great outer crunch, crispy, and not too oily or coated. It was perfect with the panko. The chicken itself was alright, kinda dry but the katsu cuts were a good size portion-wise. The curry was kind of a letdown. The curry was a lot saltier than I've had...like why so salty! The katsu sauce (the darker brown) was standard, not bad but the curry tasted better than that. In all, great if you're looking for simple takeout. But I don't know who called Jungdon the "best katsu" in the Bay. Try Kizuna or Sumiya in the South Bay! Parking is a little tricky, no lot, just some shady street parking. But I got lucky and found a spot just on the corner from Jungdon. I wouldn't necessarily come back just for the katsu, will def be on the lookout for my fave katsu spot in the greater Oakland area!

Yelp
My sister was craving for some curry today and she has recommended Jungdon Katsu before. Since I haven't tried it yet, we decided that was what we're grabbing today. Jungdon Katsu is a ghost kitchen and does not have any seating area. Pick up orders only. Thankfully, we were able to find street parking right in front, but I think the cars around that street are mostly there for food pick up anyways, so parking becomes available quickly. Since my sister had tried this place before and knows how big the portion sizes are, we decided to share a Deluxe Chicken Katsu and ordered curry sauce on the side (Katsu orders don't come with curry sauce). Our deluxe meal comes with cabbage salad, japanese style potato salad, miso soup, sauce for the Katsu (I think it's Worcestershire sauce or something similar) and another salad dressing. When I say portion size is huge, it is HUGE. It could feed three or four people, and it was the size of two large takeout boxes. Between my sister and I, we still had tons left over, but I have to say, it was totally worth it! Even with the drive home, the katsu stayed nice and crispy. The meal came with four pieces of chicken Katsu. All of them fried to a nice golden-brown. It had a crispy exterior, but still moist on the inside. They really got their Katsu down! It pairs nicely with both the curry sauce, that needs to be ordered separately, and the Worcestershire (?) sauce. Personally, I like dipping my Katsu pieces with the curry sauce because it's more mild in taste and it softens the Katsu pieces just a bit. As for the potato salad, the deluxe, comes with three scoops (think ice cream scoops) of them! What'd I say? Enough for three people, haha! The potato salad was mildly sweet and soft. I think it had some carrot and corn pieces mixed into it. Jungdon was also really generous with their cabbage salad! It was fresh and simple. The salad dressing just adds a slight tang to the mix. A very satisfying meal! I'd definitely come back for some more curry. I'm looking forward to trying their Menchi Katsu next!

Yelp
Ok so I'm not a big katsu fan BUT this place somehow made me love it. The crispyness of the katsu is unique - it feels very light and airy. The shaved cabbage with their house sauce is also so delicious and addicting. I could eat like a whole bowl of that sauce. I sub rice for more of the salad because it pairs so well/cuts through the katsu. Really great balance of flavors and huge portions! Keep in mind it's only take out so you can order ahead and pick up. Surprisingly whatever they're doing works because even when you bring it home after 15-30 mins it still keeps its crispy texture!
google avatar

Megan C.

Yelp
Best katsu I've had since Japan! The servings are mighty and the flavors are delicious. The cabbage side is worth it for the flavor and added texture. Really enjoy the care in preparation with Togo to minimize the sogginess potential with delivery. Care in all things - really one of the top spots for this food.
google avatar

Sammy T.

Yelp
The best katsu place...is in a ghost kitchen?! YES IT IS. This place is better than any sit-down katsu place I've found in the Bay area and the crazy thing is that despite it being takeout, it STILL is fresh and crispy when I ate it. A few things we had: 1. Menchi Katsu- This was surprisingly the most memorable katsu out of them all. Perhaps because it's also not often that I see this on the menu. Crispy and delightful! 2. Curry Sauce- Hits the spot and as good as any other japanese curry spot. It comes in a little container that is good for 1.5 meals probably 3. Deluxe Combo Katsu- This is BIG and WAY worth it. I personally didn't loooove the cheese katsu (personally) but the chicken katsu in this was delish (as was the cabbage) 4.Anshim (Pork) Katsu - This was also delish. Crispy exterior and moist pork. Overall, if ANYONE needs to get katsu in the bay area, come here. The takeout is WAY worth it and just eat at someone's home instead if you really want a "sit down". It's cozier to be at home anyways!

Yelp
Delicious katsu with authentic flavors reminiscent when visiting Japan. The edamame was wonderful... a must visit!

Yelp
Wow!!! 5/5 They nailed it! This is the best katsu we have had since Japan .. Will order again

Yelp
I was just laying down, minding my own business, and the Yelp app informed me about this new Katsu spot just in Emeryville. We haven't gotten katsu in quite some time. I'm honesty always disappointed. I got the chicken katsu because I feel like people mess up pork so much. My spouse got the Anshim (traditional) and we ordered a miso soup. They threw in an extra soup AND THIS KATSU RIVALS KATSU IN KOREA. Honestly I like it even more than the really famous spot in Myeongdong that my cousin took me to last time I was there. The portions are ample. The crunch is serious. The meat is juicy. The rice is perfect. Dipping sauce was delightfully less viscous than what I expected. It was soooo generous to have the extra soup We did delivery even though we typically pick up takeout and it arrived earlier than estimated. I'm so full and so happyyyyy!!!
google avatar

Yelp
I didn't get to try this restaurant in person as my friend ordered door dash for us. We had an event to go to so the food sat for a bit, but even with a couple hours' wait it was still soooo tasty and delicious, I can't wait to try again when it's fresh. We ordered the deluxe Katsu and it was perfect for two, with large portions! The katsu, rice, salad, and potato salad combo was perfect. I especially loved the katsu sauce and the dressing for the salad. It also came with a miso soup that was perfect for the rainy day!
google avatar

Sandra L.

Yelp
The chicken Katsu was the Bomb I love how the portion size is huge so good for that price the texture was on spot will definitely be going back also the order process is so high tech that you order online and you receive a text when it is complete and just by a push of a button on your phone the locker will release with your order this place is MAYJAH sorry I didn't take any photos but I mopped that whole plate me and my fiancé because it was Big

Yelp
Jungdon Katsu is serving excellent Japanese foods that travel well as delivery and takeout. This is a ghost kitchen at the Adeline Food Hall, aka "Longfellow Food Pickup." This kitchen is located in North Oakland, but a web search might tell you Jungdon Katsu is in Emeryville. If the pickup address is "5333 Adeline St." then you're in the right place. I got off work early and decided to place a delivery order before they closed at 930pm. DoorDash (DD) is offering promos for trying this new restaurant. I ordered: -Deluxe chicken katsu -Whole shrimp tempura (listed as fried shrimp) First off, this food travels well as delivery. My DD driver took 30-mins to get to my house, and the Miso soup was still hot. The fried foods are packed in breathable containers, so they don't get soggy and soft. The Deluxe Chicken Katsu is alot of food! Big serving of crispy and moist chicken katsu. Shredded cabbage and 3 scoops of Japanese potato salad. A small container of white rice, and free Miso soup. There's also sauce, wasabi, and scallions. There's also a salad dressing that's more like a salty broth. It's different, but okay. Overall, it's a delightful and filling meal. Enough for two people. Price: $28. Fried Shrimp (Shrimp Tempura), 3 Pieces. They gave me an extra piece, so I had 4 pcs. Fresh and lightly crisp. Probably better hot from the kitchen. A mild dipping sauce is included. Price $12. Overall, a great first order from Jungdon Katsu. Next time I will pickup my own food. FYI, a ghost kitchen has no dining room or wait staff. It's takeout or delivery only. Don't go to 5333 Adeline St looking for a restaurant or a "sit down meal." Best tip- order ahead using a delivery app and pickup your own food. That way you know it's fresh. But it does travel well as delivery too. Located at the Adeline Food Hall, North Oakland

Yelp
So my review is based on the food, how it tasted and it's presentation was authentic and delicious. I personally just have a issue with table salt or particular seasonings and I guess they use a seasoning I'm allergic to, so I can't eat there regularly at all. I ended up swelling up pretty bad and had to lay down for the rest of the evening due to the inflammation. The rice was perfectly cooked otherwise and the pork was tender and flavorful. I do wish they used a fattier cut of meat as an option though. I've never had Japanese potato salad before and saw a content creator making it on YouTube and always wanted to try it one day. It was unique and delicious. I enjoyed everything I got, taste wise until the side effects kicked in. Thank you, just wished I wasn't allergic to whatever ingredient caused the swelling and inflammation.

Yelp
Ordered the cheese katsu deluxe combo. The portion is great and while the deluxe is on the pricier side, the side potato salad and cabbage salad are yummy - I actually winded up eating more of that. I am a big fan of cordon bleu pork chops / stuffed pork chops, and cheese pork chop is something from my childhood memory. So I was pleasantly surprised when a lovely katsu place with these options just opened in the neighborhood. As you can see below, the cheese katsu I received is quite different from their photos - it's less of a "log" looking piece stuffed with cheese they show in the photos, but perhaps because it is take out and the cheese melted a lot, they look more like boats filled with cheese. But that doesn't really explain away how the meat is so thin - it at this point just tastes like a croquette or mozzarella stick. The flavor is still great, but I just wish the meat has a presence at all. I will definitely give this place another try and am hoping that it is on point next time so I can become a regular. Love that it is in a local food hall (pickups only) which has become very popular during Covid.

Yelp
Got the normal Anshim (tenderloin) Katsu ($19.75) and the Deluxe Deungshim (loin) Katsu ($32). Not including tax and online order fee. Pickup only from the Adeline Food Hall. The amount of katsu is the same, so even though the deluxe plate is about double the size of the normal plate, you're essentially paying an extra $12 just for potato salad, miso soup, more rice, and more cabbage salad. That being said, the sides were yum. The wife preferred the anshim tenderloin (more tender) over the deungshim pork loin, but I think the difference was negligible. Long story short: pricey katsu, decent sides, big portions (but not sufficient to justify the price), and the deluxe version is a ripoff.

Yelp
Jungdon Katsu is located in Longfellow Foodhall, which is a ghost kitchen where restaurants prepare food for pickup and delivery orders only. I was hesitant to order to-go from a katsu joint as fried food never fares well after sitting in a takeout box, but Jungdon is proof that it's possible! THE ORDER 1) Deluxe Cheese Katsu (mozzarella wrapped in pork tenderloin) 2) Chicken Katsu 3) Side of curry sauce The katsu was crispy and light and perfectly fried for both dishes. The chicken wasn't dry and the cheese katsu had a thin layer of pork that served as the bowl for the luscious cheese center. The curry wasn't anything special, but I enjoyed it as a sauce for my chicken katsu and rice. The potato salad and miso soup that you're paying about $10 more for with the deluxe boxes was not special enough for me to pay more for next time, but the portions for everything were large. Our pickup took about 15 minutes longer than quoted through Door Dash, but everyone was friendly at the ghost kitchen, the food was packaged nicely, and I did receive a text when the food was ready. The parking situation can be a bit congested right outside because a lot of cars double park, but you can usually find some spaces across the street. Overall good experience and would recommend!

Yelp
Order online. Pick up from a designated locker. Drove home and had katsu that reminded of Japan. Best katsu in the area. $19 plate has two patties of pork and you're getting value for two meals in one box. Arigatou gozaimasu!

Yelp
After hearing great reviews from a friend and reading a SF article, this place was on my list to try. Order and pick up is through a ghost kitchen concept. Pick up is quick when you are notified your order is ready via mobile and the staff at the front is relatively quick to give you your order. We tried the chicken and pork tonkatsu. Overall, portion size was decent for the price. The meat was nicely breaded - very fluffy and stayed crisp even once we got home and still good even when reheated the next day! We also ordered a side of the curry sauce. This was okay, rather bland, and did not have a strong curry flavor. The price point for this addition is not worth it. Also, the other additions seemed rather costly and not worth it! My friend previously got the deluxe katsu meal close to $30, and also stated it was not worth it - about extra $10 for potato salad and miso, which is pretty expensive for just sides. Overall, food was good. I didn't find it comparable to Japan, but good enough for not being able to travel there yet!

Yelp
Delicious katsu presented in an impressive to go box! Potato salad a little too sweet to my liking but that's just preference.

Yelp
I recently heard about this new katsu spot in Emeryville so I wanted to try it. Turns out it's for takeout only because it's part of a ghost kitchen. Nevertheless, the katsu was really good. The pork was juicy yet remained crisp by the time I ate it. The deluxe actually can serve two people. The size of the box was huge...it could barely contain the two large pieces of pork, rice, potato salad and shaved cabbage.

Yelp
This place is really good. There aren't many places specializing in katsu. Hope that it can become a full restaurant someday!

Yelp
Wow! Just ordered it for dinner, and man is it tasty. No joke, this is probably the best Katsu I've ever had (and I've lived in Korea for a year / been to Japan 5x). Can't believe the best Katsu is in Emeryville, so close! All I can say is, get it -- so delicious!!!

Yelp
1/18/23 Proof. I bet all of you have at some point gotten some takeout/delivery containing fried foods and found the food at best a little stale, not-crisp, maybe good tasting but not great........... but at worst, soggy as f, coating wet and falling off, absolutely unappetizing and not worth the calories. ....and you just sat and ate it cuz you're like, "Well, it's takeout, can't expect it to be great. Fried food never tastes 'the same'." I mean, I have in my foodie adventure too. I mean, that's kinda how it usually is, with some minor exceptions.............. except.... today. PROOF. Proof that we were ALL wrong! Fried katsu. What could be a better test of assumptions and theories of takeout deepfry??? You got delicately structured, heavily complex, ultra great surface areas of yellow-fried snowflakes of flour and bread crumbs. So crisp and crunchy and satisfying when hot, and OMG how wrroooooooong it could be when bad.... So, this was a #DoorDash. And I could tell that the food has had a journey getting to our house in the hills, especially given the 45deg temp outside. The dasher left and I found 2 containers on our kitchen island, donning black sashes with the logo of a square with the words "JUNG DON" in caps, stylin' the middle. And curiously...... CURIOUSLY... there was a triangle about 1.5" a side cut into one single corner on top of both paper containers. A triangle. A hole. A hole that is shaped like a triangle. Mr. Ms. Jung Don, patent that sht. Your triangle adorning 2 boxes of katsu, which braved the many mile journey and freezing cold of Oakland................... was... A Miracle. Two deep fried katsu meats, with fleshy innards cold, but still with UTTERLY PERFECTLY CRISP AND CRUNCHY shells. Just as good as any straight out of the fryer to your plate. JUST AS GOOD. W T F. 1. Curry Sauce $5: Yeah $5 for curry sauce. No, nothing special. Make your own. 2. Deluxe Combo Katsu $30: ABSOLUTE RIPOFF. But man, perfect coating. Pork was a bit dry but not bad. Rice was fine. Came with a fried mozzarella ball, done up Japanese style, cut in half. It was cold so I heated it up in the over at 350deg for 4min. OOEY GOOEY perfect! Better than any Italian fried mozza stick in my opinion. Well, okay, not ANY, but most. 3. Menchi Katsu $18: Hamburger patty done katsu style? F yeah. Only item out of the 3 not a ripoff. And it's great. Look...... it's a rip. No doubt. IF IF IF you compare to other katsu's eaten by mere mortals. But served as if God ordered DoorDash?... 5/5 (ps--I have NO SYMPATHY for restaurants from which I get soggy fried foods. If they cannot take the effort to test how their food survives in their stupidly sealed boxes, they don't deserve success.) #katsu #friedpork #friedcheese #cheesekatsu #cheeseball #menchkatsu #hamburgerkatsu #curry #japanesecurry #star #bestever #bestdoordash #emeryville #oakland #northoakland

Yelp
Ordered through door dash, it did take some time to get to me and the food was cold. However, the chicken katsu reheated nicely - still crispy. You get a generous portion of food - a lot of rice and a lot of chicken. I didn't know what to expect with the curry, but I'm glad I ordered it. It tastes good with the katsu! I prefer the curry to the plum katsu sauce. The potato salad was also very good.
