San Francisco’s Alcatraz Plaza at Pier 31 Is Looking for an Operator for Its New Waterfront Restaurant Space | Eater SF

"I'm excited that the pork katsu concept Jungdon Katsu is moving from a ghost kitchen to a permanent restaurant at 120 E. Prospect Street in Danville; it's a favorite of Chronicle associate restaurant critic Cesar Hernandez, and diners will finally be able to try a freshly fried cutlet rather than the delivery version starting as soon as Wednesday, September 18." - Dianne de Guzman

Google
Great Katsu place in the middle of Danvile downtown. Had Anshim combo and Cheese combo katsu, both really authentic and delicious. The side bukakke soba had some interesting smell, which I am not sure what it is though. Ikura and Hamachi nigiri was good as well.

Google
Really good tonkatsu place in East Bay. Panko breaded layered katsus were crispy to the sound. Ordered Anshim Tonkatsu (pork tenderloin) and Curry rice with tonkatsu. Curry rice had too much rice, so it was bland. Wish they had kimchi or something. Kinda on the pricier side though. They have outside dining area.

Google
Finally a legit Katsu place in the East Bay!Pork loin & tenderloin are both good and tender, although the meat is thinner than what i’m used to and there’s no fat (I like some fat on my katsu). The breading tastes like fresh breadcrumbs and it’s the first time I had it in California (My favorite katsu place is in Honolulu & Las Vegas). The cabbage sauce is so good and the katsu sauce a little thinner in consistency compared to what we usually had in other place. I recommend they add freshly ground sesame seeds on the side to mix with the katsu sauce as that’s what’s missing. Over all I really enjoyed the food and definitely this would be a new go-to whenever I’m craving katsu!

Google
wanted to love this place. it looks good but looks are deceiving. the fry on the katsu is great but the pork on the inside is really dry and doesn't have much flavor. don't get me wrong, this is still probably the best katsu place around. good for danville. service isn't as bad as some of the other reviews have mentioned but also not the greatest.

Google
The best Katsu in my mind! Although the place is a little far from my home, but I will recommend friends to visit and enjoy the food.

Peace L.

Google
I’ve been here locally many times and it’s my first review. Their Taru sushi restaurant is good but I’m more so here for their super crispy and tasty katsu.

Amirah S.

Google
Top tier katsu and sushi restaurant in Danville. I’ve eaten at the Oakland takeout location a few times but katsu is much better eaten immediately and fresh! Dropped by kinda late on a busy holiday weekend and they were sold out of ingredients. Returned the next day and had the most delicious chicken katsu plate. I’ve eaten katsu dishes all across Japan and can say with certainty that this restaurant nails the execution and quality. So so good! Order via QR code and the service while limited, was very good and friendly. Will definitely return and highly recommend.

Google
The best Katsu around! If you’re a Katsu lover with high expectations like me, this will be your new favorite place. This place is just as good as the Katsu places in Honolulu, just so much closer! LOVE IT!

Yelp
After a day of shopping at the outlets, we discovered this tucked-away gem located towards the back, adjacent to the retail stores. Be prepared to park on the street and walk a short distance to find the entrance. The service was quite fast. We came after lunch hours so it seemed to have slowed down in comparing to the reviews. My husband and I were greeted right away and seated. The place had indoor and outdoor seating. I ordered the chicken katsu and pork katsu, both of which were fantastic and delicious on their own or paired with wasabi. I really enjoyed the side dishes such as the corn salad and potatoes. I also tried the cold soba noodles, and they were absolutely delicious. We ordered and paid on the app which made it so efficient! I'm looking forward to returning next time!

Yelp
We found this spot after an IG review. It quickly became a favorite. It's a very small restaurant with a small staff so sometimes the wait is a bit long but it is worth it. The food is delicious and the portions are big. So sad to hear about the fire damage and hope they are open again soon

Yelp
Drove an hour to come to this place and have to say it was fully worth it. The service is honestly pretty bad, and the owners(?) seem pretty unfriendly. But I guess rightfully(?) so because this place has people lined up for pricy katsu in Danville!!! I got the anshim katsu and I can probably say it was the best katsu I've ever had and I've had quiet a few in my lifetime. The extra curry for $7 was honestly such a waste of money and I will def opt out of it next time. Hope one opens near me soon! Tiers above Amazing Katsu which is what we have in the South Bay.

Yelp
Jungdon has two locations - Danville and Emeryville (available soon for dine-in) and I came here to meet with a friend. It's tucked away down an alley with other small businesses, but surrounded by boutiques in the area. Parking is street or meter. The host didn't greet us, but told us to sit wherever we liked and we ordered our food from a QR code at the table. The staff didn't check on us, but the food was great. I ordered the pork loin katsu and it was so good and so crispy. The crispiness level of it was as close to Japan as I could find in the bay. The pork loin was a little on the dry side, but still so good. The katsu sauce was thin and very salty, so use sparingly! Overall I'd come back if I was in the area. Definitely a must try if you're close by!

Yelp
We came Friday night during prime time. There were so many people waiting and also many who left since front of house service is very limited and they were tired of waiting. There was actually even an open table that was clean when we arrived - but no one came out to call people to sit down. We waited for ~35 minutes and had to proactively ask the staff about who was managing the line outside since no one had come out to call any names. So, docking a star for front of house since they are clearly popular and quite busy, and they just need to get a better system in place for seating people when there is a line. The katsu is TOP NOTCH here. Seriously, just on food only, this is definitely 5 stars. Their katsu has incredible texture and is SO well cooked. Crispy panko and tender meat. I previously tried their pork loin katsu (which was awesome) and this time with my husband we decided to try their fish katsu, cheese katsu, and pork tenderloin for variety. We loved all of it! So, like I said before, and many other reviewers have pointed out, the service is lacking for sure - they are so busy and clearly understaffed. It seems like the staff have issues managing a ton of online orders while also seating people and then serving people sitting in the restaurant. But, the food is definitely excellent. So, if you're interested in the food, I'd recommend to come early right when they open, or do a pickup or delivery order!

Yelp
This would be a 1 star for me as they were really disorganized, and took a really long time to be seated (2nd party in line for 40 min with many open uncleared tables). I liked the ambiance and calming music, but one can sit without starving for so long. I had a snack prior but was pretty hungry by the time i got my food. But once seated, scan the QR code, order and pay. Food would be out with half an hour. They somehow ran out of chicken katsu, but they were fairly new then. So I hope wait times are better. Staff kinda of didn't really care if you were there or not. Honestly the best katsu I've had in a long time or ever. It's perfectly crispy and flaky. I even had a side curry and soba soup. The cheese katsu was flavorful too. Def worth the try and will be back soon.

Yelp
Jungdon Katsu is a new Korean katsu spot that just opened in Danville and they also have a ghost kitchen in Emeryville. I have mixed feelings on the food. The sushi was fresh and had good portions, but the katsu came out a little overcooked and dry. What stood out most though was the service and overall cleanliness, which weren't good at all! The tables weren't wiped down very well and customer service felt minimal. Theres barely any interaction with the staff because you order through a QR code and no one comes back to check up on you or refills your water, and the server kept placing our order on top of our trays and food. If they can tighten up their service and pay more attention to keeping the dining area clean, I'd come back.

Yelp
I am so saddened to hear this location is closed due to a fire. Hoping they reopen soon so I can support. I am thrilled there is a ghost kitchen located in Emeryville so I will definitely order soon. This review is overdue. I ordered via Door Dash (2) chicken katsu and (2) pork katsu with a side of curry. I had high hopes but since it was delivery wasn't sure how crunchy it would be. Everything was packaged nicely. The katsu had a unique batter similar to tempura. It was incredibly light and maintained its crisp texture. We enjoyed it, and it was not greasy at all. We have never had katsu like this and definitely will order again. The only disappointment was the curry. It was mostly sauce and a little carrot possibly potato but ours didn't have any. I really would love a curry with chicken, potatoes and carrots. Once they reopen do support, awesome katsu and we were not disappointed.

Yelp
Jungdon Katsu is a intimate dual named restaurant also called Taru Sushi Restaurant. So, serving sashimi, sushi rolls, etc. The parking is mostly all street parking in Danville. Ambience: I think they do offer outside seating, but I can't be certain. It could possibly be the holdover from the former Japanese Restaurant. We dined indoors with the air conditioning. Simple decor and ambience. Only one unisex restroom. Order via QR code at your table. Service: They were pretty crowded for Labor Day holiday. The service was friendly and polite. Though, the food took some time to come out. Food: Anshim Katsu: Anshim is pork tenderloin. Plate comes with corn salad and choice of udon, soba or curry. We went with the Kake (Hot) udon over the bukkake (Cold) soba. Maybe next time. The panko fry on these were very light and flakey. It was not heavy and oily like other places. The katsu thickness was decently cut. The corn salad was more of a smooth creamy potato salad with corn kernels. The thinly shaved green cabbage and dressing broke up the meat and rice heaviness. Fish Katsu: Alaska cod fish with housemade tarter sauce. Again, the panko fry was airy and light which didn't detract from the flakiness of the fish. Support your local business.

Yelp
Found this little hidden spot on Yelp and I actually asked myself do I want to share this small little gems with others or keep it to myself... kidding... kinda lol Tucked away and my first thought was great a spot where we will leaving smelling like fried food but not at all. I watched the cook bread and cook the katsu chicken. Portions are great and the chicken is crispy and airy. Delicious. Comes w/ cabbage that I wish had a little more flavor added to it. We ordered a couple of rolls that were fresh and tasty and the soba noddles which were great as well. The server tried to bring things out fast but the wait for the food was a little longer than I would have liked. Total family spot for a good "home cooked" type of meal.

Yelp
Super cool place that specializes in katsu. This was my first time having menchi katsu which is grounded pork. Also this follows a korean katsu which is different from a japanese katsu. The texture of this katsu was somewhat flaky but also has a bunch of tiny crunch to it. Not sure how to explain it in a way that sounds appealing aha. Service was alright, thought it could be a bit better. Felt like we waited awhile for our food and my wife ordered a nigiri that we had to remind them to bring to us. Like several other reviewers, you best just head to the front to inquire things as it was hard to flag a server. It wasn't busy that day but seems like slow service is a common theme from the reviews. Also don't expect much from servers to explain things to you as they kind of deliver food and vanish. If you've read this far down, just know this is korean katsu which is different from the typical japanese/hawaiian katsu that has a thicker type of breading.

Yelp
We came here a few months ago and I was trying to keep this place a little hidden gem but now I can't get it off my mind. Why can't this restaurant be closer to my house??? Maybe because I would eat here all of the time if I could! My husband found Jungdon Katsu when we had to take my son to a physical therapy appointment nearby. He knows I love having an array of food in front of me so I can have a little bit of everything. Plus it was safe for my son to eat, with his garlic and onion allergy. We got 4 different plates so we each could get a plate for ourselves and then an extra so we could try a different pork. My son and I both got the chicken katsu tray and my husband got the pork loin katsu tray & the pork tenderloin katsu. We got the udon soup to go with the trays, kinda wish I tried the soba but I was a little nervous to try something new. The katsu has a crunchy exterior but a soft inside, which goes for all the meats we had including the pork and chicken. Make sure to use the lemon salt!! It definitely kicks the flavor up a notch. The udon was flavorful and the cabbage with the sauce they give you to put on was tasty. We liked the little red peppers (not sure what type) so that was a good surprise to add with bites of meat. Next time we go I plan on trying the fish to see how it compares to their other items, and maybe the soba noodles. Let me know if I missed out by not getting the soba noodles last time! It was a different experience for us to use the QR code on the table to order and pay but it went smoothly. The only thing is I needed to go up to the counter to ask about food my son could eat before we ordered since no one came to talk to us first.

Yelp
We stopped by Friday night after looking around for a pork katsu place that does it pretty closely to what we had in Japan. Jungdon does it pretty damn close with aesthetic and taste. The menu is via a QR code and you pay immediately when you order with an option to keep your tab open or closed. Very convenient and has food coming out hot and fast! Their menu offers a variety of different sized pork katsu dishes that serve a different cut or offers a side of cold soba or hot udon along with your rice. They also have sushi too serving sashimi, rolls, and nagiri. We ordered the katsu dishes this time with some of their fresh wasabi on the side. The food itself was great. The katsu was fried really well with a nice light panko. I ordered mine with the cold soba that was really refreshing. It came with a corn and green pepper salad that was awesome too. All in all, jungdon definitely hit the spot. My only complaint is the lack of parking this place has but definitely worth the trip. We'll definitely be back!

Yelp
Came on a Sunday for late lunch (around 1:30pm), but there was a line of people waiting to be seated. Finally got seated after waiting for about 15-20 minutes. We looked at the menu while waiting so we could order right away. You scan the QR code on the table and order from the toast website. It's nice that you can order and pay for your own food, especially when you go in a big group! I got the cheese katsu with side of miso soup + $7 upgrade for side of curry. It was all delicious :) only complaint is the cabbage- I wish it wasnt as wet. Hubby got the pork loin combo plate with soba. There are two little tins of sauce: one for the katsu and one for the cabbage salad (The lighter and tangier one is for the salad) As for parking, we parked in a lot nearby. Wasn't too busy on a Sunday (but it was already 1:30pm anyway) 10/10 would definitely come back!!

Yelp
I'm gonna start by saying that the customer service interaction is thumbs down horrible. Pick any table. Scan the QR code. Order by yourself. No person is helping you. No person is greeting you. And you get no guidance whatsoever. Ok. Granted, I'm Asian living in the Bay Area and everyone is expected to know what Katsu is. (I do.), but if you have any questions, you can ask a human but her face and matching eye roll says "Are you seriously asking me a stupid question?" For example, the Katsu set comes with your choice of udon, soba, or curry. Basically, a hot noodle side, a cold noodle side, and a what? What's curry? A side of curry? A side of sauce? How does sauce equivalent to a noodle side dish? Does it have vegetables in it? Her response is "It's curry. For dipping or mixing your rice in." Yes, I know what curry is and I just don't know how it comes with this meal. I still don't know. I didn't order it. My husband and I had a couple more questions to ask but it wasn't because the owner was near our table. We had to physically get out of our seats, walk inside and ask her. It really felt like we were intruding. I should've left after her responses but I decided to give them a chance because the reviews about the food are good, AND the staff seems to be very nice, hardworking guys. They smiled and were very polite and friendly. One cleared our table so we could sit there. Another served us water. They were the ones who brought us our food. However, no one ever checked on us to see how everything is going. Basically crickets. If you ever have a reason not to tip, it's not for bad service. But basically for zero service. Let's talk about the food. It was good. Really good. Not greasy and you get a huge portion for what you pay for. Was it worth it? No. I could find other places with delicious katsu of the same quality with better customer service interaction. Stars given: 2.5

Yelp
FLAVOR (4/5): Really crispy batter on the katsu! I enjoyed the pairing with cold soba on a hot day too. The cabbage salad it came with was refreshing and super complimentary. Even the corn salad was a hit! The cheese and ham katsu I felt like they could have used a different cheese. It thought that dish looked better than it tasted. INSTAGRAM WORTHY (5/5): Presentation is everything and they nailed it here! Small restaurant tucked in the back but had outdoor seating too. SERVICE (5/5): Greeted when we walked in, food didn't take too long either. It's self ordering and paying through your phone so very little interaction with people. TAKEAWAYS: The restaurant is a gem in this town! Parking can be difficult. A bit on the pricier side too.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place but the service is just not it here. We had a group of 6 and came on a Saturday night. There were tables outside but the waitress said oh hold on that table might leave soon inside. So we waited maybe 20 minutes before the table was ready for us. Then someone comes and says oh I don't see your name on the list and we said she told us we didn't have to as she was about to seat us. Also there were only two small parties behind us waiting. And the man said you have to have your name on the list. So we found the waitress who had helped us and she finally got seated. Had to figure out the QR code and at least you can join a group and all order together. Unfortunately they were out of curry which would have gone so well with the tonkatsu. The tonkatsu was very tender, melt in your mouth with a nice fried crust. It was delicious and that's really where the three stars belong. It came with a lot of cabbage, the corn salad was meh and too liquidy for my liking. The soba noodles were good but for the price, this is expensive. Would only come back for the food but maybe to go is better.

Yelp
Ok what on earth!!! This random place in downtown Danville has the BEST katsu I've EVER had in my ENTIRE LIFE!! And I've had a lot of katsu.... This was literally better than katsu in Japan which is insane. I got the anshim katsu, which is made with pork tenderloin. Normally, tonkatsu is often made with pork loin, so this was quite special and VERY tender!! This is Korean owned, so I think the flavors were just different than your standard Japanese tonkatsu. The breading was like corn flake-esqe and so crispy, and the two dipping sauces (I'm not even sure what they are) were sooo light and tangy and just balanced the umami katsu sooo well. I got the combo, which comes with corn salad AND hot udon soup, in addition to salad and rice. Lowkey didn't need the combo, as I found the udon soup to be a tad too salty. Corn salad was refreshing though - Korean style with bits of shell pasta too. I'm actually so impressed!! After my first bite I was left speechless!! I was seated immediately on a weekend at 12pm (though it definitely got progressively busier), and you order from a QR code. The restaurant itself had outdoor seating to fit in large groups.

Yelp
A satisfying dinner. I randomly found Jungdon Katsu and ventured for a solo dinner. It's a casual place where you order using a QR code on your phone and food is brought to your table. I ordered the pork loin katsu. The plating was nice, with generous servings of pork, cabbage, sauce, pickles, and rice. I can also tell that they are trying to provide good food. The pickles and the sauce tasted like they were homemade. The pork itself wasn't bad, it was certainly crispy, but I think the actual meat was not super juicy nor tender and the breading was a bit excessive which resulted in a heavier than ideal bite. The rice was on the mushy side. Overall, pretty good, but there's some room for upside. Not bad for a casual dinner. I'd be open to returning.

Yelp
Food is excellent! The pork katsu and the chicken katsu were just outstanding. The miso soup was a touch on the bland side but the salad and dressing was excellent. The service was quite slow on a Thursday evening it was well over 45 min to get served. The environment is quite nice. The outdoor area was pleasant and cool I will repeat

Yelp
I was very surprised to stumble upon this hidden gem in Danville! The food instantly became a favorite of mine when it comes to katsu! Must try the cheese ball katsu!! The service quick and I felt like I was at someone's home, very warm and cozy.

Yelp
This popped up on my IG feed & it did not disappoint. It's not GYUKATSU MOTOMURA but it will suffice, until my next visit to Japan. This is a 2 person run restaurant so bring your patience, kindness & appetite because portions are massive.
google avatar

Cliff S.

Yelp
The only reason why this place isn't getting a 5 star from me is because one of the ladies (manager maybe) wasn't very nice during her service. And they only had one server for the whole restaurant. But the food was actually really good, it reminds me a lot of Japan and the way they make their katsu out there. I had the regular katsu with the curry dip on the side and it was delicious!

Yelp
Jungdon Katsu opened recently in Taru's space by it's co-owner who also owns Jungdon Katsu. Seating has slightly changed since I visited Taru's. Minimal decor on walls. Offerings (Japanese): small plates. Noodles & rice; (Korean-style): Katsu Ordered, Pd by QR code, food arrived within 15ish minutes. Bites: Fish Katsu (24) definitely freshly made. -tarter sauce tastes/looks like it's English cousin though ingredients not the same -miso soup not the typical sweet tasty broth. An artisan broth savory with the slow brew essence of seaweed & other seasonings. -cabbage salad with the sweet & tart dressing was a nice compliment to the greasy grilled fish Katsu. -grilled fish Katsu has semi thick panko crumbs. Medium is moist, flaky. Bottom is dryish, grilled. -red ginger another garnish to cleanse palette. -sea salt to enhance flava. -wasabi to spice up fish Katsu. *eatery fills up quickly after opening. **Katsu comes in many variants. Pork is my fav. 4.5 stars-Quantity/Quality: Very Good. Worthy! May is Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

Yelp
Really enjoyed my visit here. The service was fast and the portions were more than filling! This reminded me of being back in Japan. Chicken was the perfect amount of crunchy and the sauces on the side with the salt really elevated the food. I will say the workers were very much hands off and I don't think they checked on us once lol. But that did not mess with the overall experience. I actually really enjoyed being left alone to chit chat with my friend and eat my meal in peace. I would definitely recommend this place.

Yelp
Pretty good Katsu restaurant. We made a reservation for six of us before the crowd rush. The restaurant is small and the setting is quaint. The staff is attentive and looking at the menu, ordering and settling the tab is easy using the QR code on the table. Four of us ordered the Anshim Katsu (Pork Tenderloin cutlet), one person ordered Fish Katsu and one person ordered Deungshim Katsu (Pork Loin cutlet) and we shared some Karaage and a Dragon sushi roll. Edamame beans were fresh and good too. The consensus was all of the katsu dishes were tender, light, not oily and nice crust but you definitely need to dip in sauce. The katsu alone has very light seasoning. The cabbage salad was good and the dressing leans a bit toward the tart side. The chicken Karaage is more towards the dry side and mild flavor so I recommend dipping in a sauce too. Everyone who ate the sushi said it was very good, nice crispy tempura shrimp, fresh ingredients and the spicy sauce on top is not overly spicy. Fresh, light Katsu locally, no need to drive out of the area for good Katsu, great service and priced reasonably. Take the family and enjoy a very good meal, service and not break the bank.

Yelp
Amazing katsu place in downtown Danville. It is hidden in an alley. Provides some outdoor seating and dog friendly. We always ordered their pork katsu plate ($24) and it comes with 2 big pieces of pork tenderloin, rice and cabbage. If you like the katsu in Hawaii or Japan, you need to try this place. The price is reasonable compared to other Bay Area restaurants. Pork is so tender! I always wonder where they get these pork tenderloin so I can cook these at home! So yummy! I also cleaned the plate each time I go there.

Yelp
Small spot tucked in the back and when we arrived they mentioned a wait of an hour with 9 people in front of us. We waited around 30 mins and some of the people did not come back so we were able to snag a table. The place is pretty small about 8 or so tables and a few on the out door patio. The katsu batter is pretty good one of the better places I've been to in CA. I could do without the sides but I had the curry with pork katsu and I liked the curry even though I like my curry a little thicker. We will be back to try some sushi as a starter.

Yelp
Small mom and pop type Japanese restaurant specializing in katsu (and sushi) that's tucked away in Downtown Danville. I grew up in this area and party of me was just excited and happy to see places like this even exist in this part of town (maybe there's more Asian folks and eateries in the area now, but when I was in the area as a kid, these spots felt really rare). The service was great and folks here are very friendly. It's reminiscent of places I love to eat at in the relatively highly Japanese populated areas of Gardena/ Torrance in southern California. Came here with some family to get some dinner. The place isn't large, but a large group was leaving as we came in, so we were able to get seated pretty quickly. It was really cold that night so I ordered the hot soba noodles for myself. We also ordered some bottles of sake to be split among the adults of the table. I really enjoyed the soba. The texture of the noodles felt perfect and all the components and broth were tasty. I got a small bite of the tonkatsu from my nephew and that was really delicious and crispy as well. The food, the hospitality, the location, the people, and the space itself...just so much to like and love about this place.

Yelp
The food itself, 5 out of 5! Chicken katsu and curry on the side is a must! This place was soo good, i came back 2 days in a row lmao. The seasoned chicken with light flaky crisp. The curry on the rice, fire. As far as customer service, they just order and leave you alone, I get it, it's a very small shop. So they can't be too attentive hit overall solid 4.5/5

Yelp
Food was bomb, katsu plate was excellent and very filling. Breading was buttery and crispy. Service was meh. They barely talk to you as you order through a QR code and when you put your name down on the waitlist, you have no idea how long you'll wait. We came on a Friday evening around 7:30 and waited almost 40 minutes to be seated when there were empty tables and chairs inside. For a small restaurant, it had very slow service. Would return again but probably just do take out.

Yelp
Not sure if Jung don Katsu is part of Taru Sushi or has taken over the restaurant. The sushi menu and sushi bar is still intact. The interior has not changed neither has the signage. The new Katsu menu is a great add. We ordered two combo meals of Katsu one pork loin and one fish both of which are excellent freshly made. The tray comes with rice, shredded cabbage salad (traditional) potato salad and a small bowl of soba noodles. The Alaskan cod and pork Katsu were done just right 5 stars. We had the grilled garlic edemame appetizer which was just meh $9. Definitely not grilled. Stir Fried and kinda greasy. The food takes a long time to come out. Luckily we were the first one to order. Parking is hard with only street parking available. Service was ok.

Yelp
Absolutely love this katsu spot--it's a gem, especially since there's nothing quite like it in the area. What I appreciate most is that, even though they're one of the only places around doing this, they don't just rely on that--the quality is genuinely excellent. We tried their katsu sets on our first visit (no sushi this time), and they were so good. You can fully customize your set--choose your meat, cut, and sides like rice or noodles. I loved that you could upgrade to curry rice, soba, or udon too. Portion sizes are solid, and while it's not cheap ($25-$30 per set), the food definitely feels worth it. The katsu was super tender, and both the classic and cheese versions were great. I'd probably stick with the original next time, but the cheese was a fun try. We also ordered the chicken karaage, but sadly that one didn't hit for us--felt a bit dry and not as flavorful as expected. Might've just been an off day, but we'd skip it next time. There's minimal seating, so be prepared for a possible wait. Service was friendly but busy, which is understandable given the crowd. They do offer takeout, but honestly, katsu is just better fresh and crisp in-house. All in all, a great spot. Delicious, customizable katsu sets that we'll definitely be back for--just maybe sharing one next time with an app!

Yelp
Amazing katsu shop located in a alley in Danville. Food was amazing and prices were fair. The taste reminded me of the shops I've been to in Oahu and Tokyo. Loved the space they're in highly recommended.

Yelp
Perfect, perfect, perfect! I love a good tonkatsu, and this for sure hits the mark. Located inside the Taru sushi restaurant, tucked in a little pocket of a strip mall behind Starbucks, now combined with Jungdon Katsu; there are two types of tonkatsu -- Anshim (pork tenderloin -- GET THIS ONE), and deungshim (pork loin -- the kind you'll get at most tonkatsu spots). They've also got a number of other katsu-type offerings like chicken, cheese, ground pork, codfish, and shrimp, but I like sticking to ole reliable and getting the tonkatsu. The anshim tonkatsu is a perfect balance of soft tender slightly juicy pork, with a moderately thick panko breading. Pair this with their tonkatsu sauce, or even the lemon salt, and you'll love it. The only thing that it's missing (in my opinion) is a little bit of ground toasted sesame seeds. Service is quick and nice, they first seat you at one of their tables, with a listed QR code to order -- love that they support Apple Pay, it makes the ordering process so easy.

Yelp
Delicious katsu, reminding me of Japan! The katsu was on point though! Nice and crispy, and fluffy! Generous with the cabbage. And the set came with your choice of udon, curry, or soba. At $34, it is on the pricier side. But it is a decent sized portion! Overall it does seem pricier than the Emeryville location which is a pick up only location in a food hall. Definitely comfort food, tucked away in a cozy alley with a warm fireplace. On the sushi side... the sashimi was $45 for 8 pieces, and $24 for 4 pieces which is a bit steep. The rolls seemed big though! We didn't try sushi or sashimi so we can't comment to it. Overall we will be back for the Katsu! The Emeryville location is one of my favorites, and this is a bonus for the seating component. The service was okay! Maybe not too warm when we asked a question, but the food did come out fast which was nice.

Yelp
Food is decent but service is non-existent. Might as well be counter or to go only. For the prices they are charging the level of service should be much much higher. If you are not from around the area, less than 10 minutes, definitely not worth the drive.

Yelp
Come for the katsu. Don't stay for the service. Not checked on once. Order from the table via a scan code. The food is really good tho. The katsu is tender and flakey. Small place so come early.

Yelp
Jungdon Katsu took over a moderately sized sushi restaurant in Danville- great location across the street from Lottie's. We walked in for lunch and ordered using a QR code and shared a pork tenderloin katsu set with curry and ordered a plate of the cheese katsu. The breading was extra crispy and the pork tenderloin was tender and juicy. We liked the 2 sauces the katsus came with and the curry was good to dip in. The cheese katsu on the other hand...way too overwhelmingly cheesy. Next time, we'd just share the pork tenderloin set- maybe with soba and an order of the curry. Really good katsu menu here in a great location! Happy to see this kind of food in Danville.

Yelp
So delicious!!! Oishii! Deep fried breaded pork! If you're looking for or open to trying something yums, check out this place. The tonkatsu is light airy crispy and yummy quality. You can also get a set where you get tonkatsu, potato salad, soba, and of course a lot of cabbage The ambiance inside is super cute and chill! It might be a bit tough to find so just remember it's tucked in a bit. It will be worth it when you find it! We also tried their dragon roll which is delicious as well and the fish katsu. Also the owner is absolutely amazing! She knows the best Check it out

Yelp
I actually hesitate to bring more attention to this hidden gem. Came here on recommendation of one of my kids who loves this spot. We can't early with our party of 6 to avoid the crowds, which arrived shortly after. The restaurant interior is pretty small but with the outdoor patio, you can fit a lot more people. It's a combo sushi and katsu restaurant as best as I can tell. We were seated at a large rustic table and ordered via QR code. The busy server brought us a carafe of water before she ran off to the other tables. If you're looking for traditional table service, you'll be disappointed. There was one server and one busser, some cooks, and a sushi chef. We got gyoza (good) apps, edamame (excellent), and a couple sushi rolls (good taste and appearance). We all ordered the combo pork tonkatsu dinners. You get a choice of veggie curry, cold soba or udon noodles. You also get a bowl of rice, pickled radish, creamy corn side, and a shredded cabbage salad with dressing on the side. The two tonkatsu chops were excellent, fried crispy with a panko blend. Gotta say this place rivals the famous one in Honolulu. I'll give this a 5 for the food, but a 3 for service. Forgot one bowl of rice, had to ask for water refills several times, and no soy sauce for the sushi. Minor things service-wise but we came here for the food. We'll be back!

Yelp
The katsu here is phenomenal. Easily the best katsu I've had in the Bay. Husband ordered the anshim katsu set (pork tenderloin) and it came with rice, cabbage, udon, and corn salad. It's a big portion so come hungry if you plan on ordering a set! He really enjoyed it. I ordered the fish katsu (cod) and holy cow, it was amazing. It came with rice, cabbage, and tartar sauce on the side. We also ordered the shrimp katsu a la carte on the side and that came with 3 pieces. The breading on all the katsu was very light and crunchy. Not oily and not mushy or soggy. It's been a week since trying this place and I've been thinking about it all week. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
We wanted to try this place since I read good reviews for the Emeryville location. We came on a Thursday around 4:15. It doesn't open for lunch during weekdays but opens at 4pm. We got the Anshim Katsu. Waited for about 20 min. It was airy and crispy. However, the bottom of the pork was a bit soggy. Home is only 15min away. The salad dressing was very yummy! There are many other selections on the menu including nigiri, sashimi and roll. So maybe next time, we will try dining in to prevent the sogginess.

Yelp
Terrible customer service. Server will always look away when you need something. When we were done, server didn't offer any take out containers or bags, had to get it myself. Had an argument over which take out bag all because I wanted the one with a handle. Server and owner were rude and told me not to come back. If you eat here, and have left over food, just ask for the bag with a handle and see what happens.

Yelp
Best tonkatsu we've had in the Bay Area! The crust was light and crispy and meat was thick but not dry. You can order a side of vegetable curry or get the deluxe combo and choose between a side of udon or curry. People next to us ordered sushi and sashimi which looked fresh. The place is pretty small and there's some outdoor seating. Customer service could use some improvement. They didn't seem to have a host when we arrived so we stood there for a while until one of the waiters told us where to sit. You order through a QR code. We went for dinner on a Wednesday night and it was full but no line. I'm sure weekends there will be a wait but we'll be back.

Yelp
First time here with friends. Food is on the pricey end, but their katsu is very well prepared and taste great, crunch, but yet it keeps the meat juicy

Yelp
The food was good, but the service was slow and lacking. Don't expect anyone to answer questions for you. The menu is a QR code and you pay via the same QR code. It was a 96F day and there was a few folks waiting that left the door open. The dining room got uncomfortably hot. They seem to prioritize takeout orders over dining room service because we saw dozens of orders being prepared and packed while we waited 50 minutes to even get one appetizer. Food took about an hour and one appetizer even came after our meal was done. Overall disorganized service, but the tenderloin katsu was melt in your mouth and the panko was so light and crispy. A little bit of wasabi, pickle, and tonkatsu sauce and it was absolute perfection. We didn't try the sushi, but might do so as an appetizer next time, or just order for pick up.

Yelp
One of the better katsu places happens to be in the small town of Danville! The prices were a bit steep but you can hear the care they put into their food from the constant pounding to make sure their meats are tender. You order through the QR code. The place has both indoor and outdoor seating. The ambiance was that of a family friendly business, feeling homey. One of my friends got a roll and the fish quality was fresh! Another friend added the curry to their order and it was delicious. Pork Tenderloin Plate (4.5/5): You have the choice of either miso soup or rice to go with the katsu. I wish it came with both but it was more than enough food! The pork was tender with the panko perfectly fried. It's not as juicy as the ones in Japan and Hawaii but still one of the best options for good katsu! The cabbage was fresh and balanced the katsu well.

Yelp
I've been here twice now, and both times the food has been consistently good. This place has a simple setup. You order off a QR code and pay on your phone, which I actually appreciate for its efficiency. You're not really here for the service. The katsu is the highlight. The breadcrumbs are perfectly done! They are super crispy, flaky, and satisfying with every bite. I haven't ventured into the sushi side of the menu because they are a bit pricey, so I stick with the katsu. Overall, if you're looking for reliably great katsu and a straightforward, no-fuss dining experience, this place is highly recommended.
