My parents were visiting NYC, and they wanted good northern Chinese food. My mom had heard good things about Juqi, so we made the trek to Flushing. We were told that they don't take reservations, so we walked in on a Sunday around 12PM for lunch. Thankfully, we were able to be seated right away. The inside is pretty big, and there weren't that many people there. I love how it's decorated inside, especially the bird cage table.
Our servers explained the menu to us and brought out some small complimentary dishes for us to try. We got the below, and it was way too much food for four people!
*Whole peking duck - The star of the show! I loved the tableside preparation and all the little details. The duck was so flavorful, and the skin was amazing. I also loved how thin the wrappers were. If you run out, they will give you more! We got the soup at the end, and the broth was so comforting. The only thing I didn't love was the caviar toast. The bread felt hard and stale, and I didn't think the duck paired well with the caviar.
*Pancake - I was expecting this to be like a normal scallion pancake, but it was actually very sweet. It definitely feels more like a dessert. It's so good though, I loved all the flaky layers. Very cool presentation, and the waiter rips it up for you into little pieces!
*Fried rice - Cool preparation, but the flavor wasn't there for me. I wouldn't order this again.
*Lychee shrimp balls - Probably my favorite dish of the night! My boyfriend doesn't even like shrimp, and he liked this. Very creative and pretty presentation.
*Eggplant - Also very sweet? I've never had eggplant like this before, and my parents never had either. They cut it into thin rectangles, coated it in a batter, and fried it. Very unique and so good!
*Braised pork - The pork was very flavorful and tender.
*Five delicacies
*Peach almond tofu pudding
*Mahjong
Overall, this was a great experience! The presentation and preparation of the dishes were very unique, and the taste, most importantly, was amazing. There were some misses like the fried rice and the desserts for me, but I still think it's a great place to take your parents or a group of friends if you want an elevated Chinese restaurant. It's pricey, but it's worth it!
