Portland Cafes Where You Can Camp Out and Work

"A self-described “unicorn cafe,” Just Bob balks at the more minimal layouts to lean into colorful maximalism. The blue walls are covered in art and menus written out in colorful chalk, with an errant bicycle hanging alongside. It’s not uncommon to see guests settle in for hours to take advantage of the internet and comfortable seating." - Rebecca Roland, Asia Alvarez

Out of the 30 coffee shops I’ve been to since moving to Portland Just Bob had the most welcoming Barista. I love the inclusivity of the place and the beautiful outside seating. The inside gave me deep clean needed vibes/thrift store vibes which is so Portland Core. Over all I would totally recommend this place & would come back. Specially if the inside was remodeled.

I was looking for a cozy coffee shop while in the area during my work day to do some work in for a bit. This was it! Very cute and cozy, I found a comfy chair in the sun and enjoyed my iced coffee. Felt very welcoming to all people, and kid-friendly. I will return!

Google
This is my new favorite coffee shop. Great choice of drinks and food from breakfast bagels to waffles, and fresh pastries. Best mochas since Coffee People and I’m not even that much into a mochas. Nice atmosphere with a bar top at back, cozy table seating indoors, plus outdoor seating in an old Victorian building with old Portland charm. Very reasonable prices as well. So much nicer than the multitude of pretentious overpriced “artisanal” coffee shops that keep replicating all over town. LGQBT and child friendly. I’ve lived in the neighborhood for nearly 20 years and I can’t believe I’ve overlooked this place. 5 stars.

The hot food had small portions and wasn’t very flavorful. The smoothie was delicious. The table had a bit of stickiness to it. The cashier was kind and knowledgeable about the menu.

This place is a cozy cute cafe with a good amount of seating space to sip a drink, read a book, or just sit near the huge windows in the front and stare outside. Tasty coffee and all good vibes, I could spend the whole afternoon here

I have wanted to go here for a long time for the breakfast and also they're one of the only places on Alberta that actually has smoothies. My only complaint is that I wish they would stay open longer cuz man I would love to have smoothies from these folks specially later on in the day. Especially in the evening. I'm just not a morning person. For The times they are Open you are in for a treat because they also have this new store next to it that's open that is an antique store and it's really amazing too I still haven't got around to going into it but that's only because I'm moving out of the country soon. The inside of the store seriously is like Harry Potter or probably more British ask I think and so it's just a really cool place to be. We came in right at the cusp of closing and they had absolutely no problem taking our order and we're really cool about it. And my order was literally made in less than a few minutes so wow they are really quick too! They have wonderful outside seating as well they also have the outside heaters too. If you'd like to smoke a cigar with your morning coffee they have ashtrays. It seems like they really do care about all customers so I really would go ahead and give this place a try if you haven't yet. It's like one of those Little gems that you really need to go to that is the brilliance of the Alberta arts district. I can't wait to go there again and see what else they have. They also serve coffee as well from what I understand and some special coffee drinks I haven't tried them yet but I plan too soon.

Google
Best coffee shop/cafe in Portland! Welcoming atmosphere, great food and drink. Unicorns welcome! Be sure to say hi to Bob!

Google
My friend and I really enjoyed our first visit here this morning. The pastry selection is incredible and I loved the ginger lemon scone that had the perfect blend of flavors and was baked to perfection. Great place to visit- comfy and quiet. A few people were working away in their laptops. We’ll be back!!

Yelp
This place's vibe is so chill and fun! It feels very Portland coffee shop without the hipster over priced coffee. The service is quick and friendly! They charge 4% on cards so cash is definitely recommended. I had a coconut milk latte and my partner had a vanilla almond milk latte and we both loved the flavors! Will be coming back

Yelp
I visited Just Bob and got a matcha latte to go. I love the unicorn decorations. Service was good and I thought it was great that the shop was kid friendly. There's shoofly bakery pastries available along with drinks and brunch food. It was great that I was asked if I wanted my matcha latte sweetened since some places don't specify if they do sweetened it. I got it with vanilla. The matcha was sweet and it was a mild matcha flavor but I still enjoyed it. I look forward to making this coffee shop be one of my regular spots.

Yelp
It is exactly that ~ a neighborhood coffee joint with just unicorns. Apparently Bob is a collector of sorts, so find random nicknacks in every crevice. Every crevice. Light bites for breakfast. Just a local spot for Albertans to wake up with a cup of coffee and chat the day away. Restroom just needs a remodel. No Bob sighting.

Yelp
I highly recommend. Great food, coffee, fun mix of music playing and friendly staff. Love the breakfast sandwiches with steamed egg on a fresh bagel. So many choices on Alberta but this is my go-to when visiting the area. Funky and fun eclectic space...or maybe Bob is just a collector of random things. Love the atmosphere, perfect place to enjoy a coffee while reading a book sitting in the puffy armchairs. Some outdoor seating to soak in the sun on those perfect sunny days and dog friendly with treats for your pup to enjoy.

Yelp
we returned for lunch yesterday in the pouring rain, and sat indoors....we've been coming here when it was formerly anna bananas back around 2012 or earlier...that closed around 2014, and just bob opened approximately around that time period.....we would come occasionally, but when covid hit, we relied on just bob for dining on their outside deck on the side, and out front...we each had a mimosa yesterday to begin...i had the just b., and we shared a green salad....my partner also had the lox on an everything bagel.....the food/drink is always excellent....we formally introduced ourselves to bob after all these yrs, and morgan is right in the mix of being wonderful staff.....it's nice and relaxing inside on a winter rainy day....thx so much, and happy new yr!

Yelp
Very family friendly. My daughter who is potty training had an accident in the play area and the staff was so kind and helpful getting the mess cleaned up and even gave my daughter unicorn stickers! The food and coffee were great but the kindness of the staff really made our visit awesome

Yelp
Good food. Open early. Friendly service. Good vibes. Reminds me of the early 2000's portland.

Yelp
An Alberta coffee shop with plenty of character! Just Bob is the cutest coffee shop with plenty of unicorn decor and even a playroom in the back corner for your children. They have awesome staff that greeted you as you came in. The place is order and then find a seat and I really enjoyed how they had a variety of seating for you to enjoy the place. Once you place your order they will call you for your drinks but will bring your food to your table. When you're done you clean your own table. As people left we saw the staff clean the table before another group sat down. As for what to get the drinks here are a must try! I thoroughly enjoyed their nutty mocha and chai. Perfect for a cold day since they come out piping hot and have fun latte art. For food I also tried the phylo wrap with the German sausage since you don't usually find that on a menu and it was pretty good. Came with a variety of mustards as well. I believe they are made to order so can be ~15 mins. I also tried the breakfast bagel with bacon, egg and cheese. I think they steam the egg here which was not your typical bagel. Solid toasted bagel that you might need to eat with a fork since some pieces might fall out as your eating it. As I was looking around the space they have art covering the walls as well and seem to have events here too!

Yelp
They had great options for our family of 5 (two adults and three kids). We were traveling and wanted a quick breakfast but more substantial than a McDonald's sandwich. We ordered the egg and croissant sandwich, a sausage breakfast bagel sandwich, two Belgian waffles and a kids Mac and cheese. Everything tasted great and came out pretty quick! And I definitely feel full enough to make it quite a way into our 6 hour drive home. The service was fast and kind, and one of the employees remembered my voice from calling to check the wait time and chatted with us about our travels and our visit. It was really sweet and just made me feel cared about. The ambiance was funky and cool, unicorns are our youngest jam right now so she loved it. There was small kids play area too which was great. I would love to come by again and try the bbp! We just didn't have enough time on this trip :) 10/10 would recommend

Yelp
Serious Food Safety Violations going on here that have been reported to appropriate parties: My husband and I came in and ordered coffees and bagel sandwiches. We sat at the bar and watched our items (&others being made), we also had a view of the back kitchen area from our seats. Guy who took our order handled kiosk , made our coffees, then immediately went to a small cutting board, lined with items that should be refrigerated (eggs, cheese, dairy spreads) but obviously are left out permanently to make sandwiches all day and began making our bagels. No hand washing, no gloves. Note I also have a gluten and egg allergy so many things he did cross contaminate everything here be warned if you have allergies too. He touched everything with his naked hands, including in the back prep area. He then used the cutting board he was cutting bagels on to crack raw eggs into a glass (getting raw egg onto a surface premade/cooked food goes). He went to the espresso machine and used the milk steamer wand to cook the egg in the cup! Then wiped that wand with a used towel and placed a glass of water (I assume it's water) back under the steam wand like they use to clean in btw milk froths (so mixing the egg with the milky water solution to contaminate every other milk frothed beverage with egg the rest of the day!) Absolutely appalling to watch. The raw egg cutting board was never wiped or changed out. I also watched the man touch his clothing, face and a trash can in between making multiple orders-WITHOUT GLOVES. A female employee then came in, set her things done and jumped in to cut, and smear bagels. No gloves! No hand wash from when she entered the building to touching food. She was also seen in the back bared handed-handling produce and assembling food. So in the 40 mins we were there neither employee washed their hands once in between touching money, raw items, themselves, and on to cooked food items. If you go here get a coffee (without frothed milk) and nothing else. I took photos of his non-gloved hands touching food but was too shocked to get a photo of the egg-milk-frother-incident.

Yelp
Unexpectedly a great breakfast place! Service was quick and timely and the spot was home-y and very cozy casual. I love that they have two selections of bagels and all of their cream cheese are to die for. Don't skip out on getting a latte- some of the best we've had!

Yelp
Get the bagel sandwiches. Just do it. Vibe is hilarious here/ - 10/10. Don't forget to look down.

Yelp
The owner's name is Bob. Not Robert. Just Bob. And he's put together the best staff in the city, also serving up the best bagel in the city (Spielman). A friend called this a "very 90s Portland coffee shop." And that's a huge compliment. It's comfortable. It's funky. It's friendly. Come for a quick cup to go or stick around and enjoy the atmosphere with me (I'm a regular and I'm not sure why I haven't left a review until now!). Lots of indoor seating, a covered patio, and even a five-seat bar (where you can get wine, beer on tap, and a couple signature cocktails, if that's your thing). I could say more, but my kids are calling me over to the play area (oh right! There's that, too. Can you believe all of these things coincide in harmony at one coffee shop? You really have to see it to believe it.)
google avatar

Sean R.

Yelp
First off, I'm not a big coffee guy, so this review is 0% about their coffee. They have coffee. When I go to a coffee shop, it's all about the coziness level, if they have comfortable seats to sit and study/work for a while, preferably with some good nooks and crannies (I love crannies). This place definitely fits the bill, and on top of all that, they have beer on tap! Definitely my type of coffee shop. I tried one of their puff pastry wraps as well, the zenner sausage was quite delicious w/ sauerkraut and mustard.

Yelp
An excellent place for brunch! Would highly recommend. The staff was very friendly and helpful!

Yelp
What a wonderful playful spot. We loved talking to Bob and getting to know the story of Just Bob while enjoying our phyllo wrapped sausage and egg scramble. It's one of those places that feels like a hometown vibe plus imagination. The staff were wonderful! Truly such a lovely experience.

Yelp
Me and my boyfriend were looking for a good place for some good, decently priced food. And to our surprise we found the perfect place. Fun artsy Portland atmosphere and some wonderfully priced and filling food. The wait for said food was a tad long though, but certainly not enough to take away from the rest of the experience. Would definitely recommend!!

Yelp
I love Just Bob. They always have the best decorations and coziest seating. Their coffee is so good, delicious and reasonably priced as well. Baristas are always nice. I haven't tried the food yet but It'll happen someday. Always a good vibe in there.

Yelp
This review is from a visit 5 months ago. The space continues to pop up in my memories because I found if to be so warm and inviting. I had breakfast on an early Saturday morning as a walk from my friends place. I was grieving a father-figure who had recently passed, also named Bob, when I saw this sign. I had to go in. The coffee was delicious, which is a statement that is rarely uttered stateside by me, as I generally find modern coffee too bitter. I found a comfy spot to eat near the window and people-watch for a spell. If you're in the neighborhood, it's certainly worth popping in.

Judee M.

Yelp
The hubs doesn't care to try new restaurants and coffee spots....but I DO! There are so many breakfast offerings in NE PDX, how do you choose? Hit the right one, with Just Bob. First of all...good coffee! Again, the hubs is a coffee snob, so scored on that. Numerous offerings on the menu, so we'll return to try it all. We enjoyed the Mediterranean scramble. The goat cheese made it creamy and on a bed of fresh spinach...I gobbled it up. A nice selection of pastries, including GF. The ambiance was comfy, the staff was engaging.
google avatar

Joel H.

Yelp
Stopped in for breakfast due to gluten free options, my wife has celiac disease. They had a wide range of great options including baked goods and GF waffles. I had a bacon egg and cheese bagel. It's pretty small so don't expect to always find seating. The coffee was great!
google avatar

Bailey R.

Yelp
I didn't actually walk into this coffee shop (my fiancé purchased my coffee for me while I was down the street ) but I ordered the Nutty (hazelnut) Mocha and it was fantastic!! I typically like to drink caramel macchiatos but that wasn't on the menu, so I decided to give this specialty coffee a chance. If you like hazelnut, it's definitely worth it! If we're in the area again, we'll definitely be back.

Yelp
How funky, fun, cozy, and magical this place is. I'd love to come back and work in one of the overstuffed armchairs. Friendly staff and clearly a community-oriented, welcoming space. They were busy and understaffed when I stopped by today, and I was in a bit of a hurry, so I didn't order prepared food. The plates I saw coming out of the kitchen - scrambles and waffles - looked tasty though!
google avatar

Yelp
I thought I just left a review but here go's another one hahaha... totally worth the time to run down Alberta. The Lox are simple and "proper beautiful". The coffee is great, the atmosphere is wonderful. Lots of neat stuff to look at... very clean environment The staff was dipped in amazing and sprinkled with delight. Thank you for the great experience. Unicorns forever ever! Amazing place...Excellent place to get Lox. Great coffee and a great staff. Super comfortable very friendly. Full of loving and hard working people. "GOOD VIBE" ... Large hot Americano. With just a little bit of cream, pretty please and thank.you... LOVE LOVE LOVE JUST BOB. I'm a forever patron. Definitely a stop everytime in portland. Thank you.

Yelp
I'm sad I didn't find out about Just Bob sooner! This is a fun, funky Portland coffee shop that definitely has a neighborhood feel and seems to be frequented by locals. There classic hip Portland-y coffee shops in this part of Portland, but I think Just Bob stands on its own and has the least curated feel compared to its neighbors (and I mean this in the best way). The breakfast items are fantastic and also very affordable. They have breakfast sandwiches, bagels and pastries among lots of other options. The coffee is great, too, and there is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Be sure to check them out next time you're in Alberta!

Yelp
We just moved to the Alberta/King neighborhood, and LOVE all things funky, quaint, quirky, and enjoy supporting local mom/pop. The husband and I walked by Just Bob several times, and it looked like a welcoming/fun place to visit....so we finally visited today at noon. We were greeted by an indifferent crew behind the counter. (Ok- so everyone has an "off" day...My husband and I let it pass). We knew the menu...since we studied it on Yelp. I chose a basic croissant egg/bacon sandwich garnished with a bunch of undressed greens. Mediocrity. The husband had the Mediterranean scramble, which was amazingly small, uninspired, with a nondescript taste. No mention of hot sauce or condiments were offered by the server who handed us our plates and left....never to return. I can see why "locals" would love a warm/welcoming neighborhood space that says Portland. Well....we are locals now but did not feel welcomed nor do we feel motivated to return to mediocre food when Alberta Street is loaded with friendly places that serve very good/inspiring food. Perhaps IF we were regulars....we would have been treated differently....I won't go down the path of other reasons for indifferent service to this older/gay couple.

Yelp
Delicious food and super cute. Great location and the staff was attentive and very friendly.

Yelp
Great service and great food!! Such a cute, eclectic little neighborhood place. If you're looking for a relaxed and inviting atmosphere, this is the place
google avatar

Yelp
The barista's are friendly and good! The coffee latte from Ukraine is delicious and my panini was delicious
google avatar

Laura W.

Yelp
Good food but weird vibe. There was a customer there that was very very loudly going on and on about politics. It was annoying and distracting. I also kind of felt like it was neighborhood people allowed only. Like we were not part of the elite group.

Erika K.

Yelp
Very friendly and cozy cafe. The food was delicious. Love all the unicorn themed art.
google avatar

Jessica L.

Yelp
Took a bite and realized I never got a picture so excuse the bite on our foods lol. The Oregon smoothie was fantastic. Not too sweet or bitter. It went well with our sandwiches. I got the croissant sand-which with salmon, cream cheese, and red onions. It burnt at the ends which ruined the bread but the amazing flavor made it way better. Would come back here again when visiting.
google avatar

Jessica A.

Yelp
What a great experience; after a few visits, it's now my neighborhood go-to. Great people, coffee, food, service. And it gets the western sunshine.
google avatar

Kelly M.

Yelp
It was my first time coming here, was a meet up with some new business friends. I loved coffee and the vibe of this place, that was 5 stars. Loved it. BUT ... I orders the Just B scramble and there was egg shell in it and not just a little, ended up not eating much. Didn't want to make a big deal about it at the time (I was the only one having food). I may try Just Bobs again but doubt I will order food
google avatar

Tim K.

Yelp
Love the funky art and decor! The German sausage in phylo dough was excellent, as was the latte.
google avatar

Patrick T.

Yelp
Let's just say I don't often get a compliment on my outfit and the barista was nice enough to say, "I like your outfit." ok ok that's not the only reason I'm giving this place 5 stars.. The vibe is perfect, retro and fun. The coffee is fantastic. They have a cute little kids area (closed for covid) They have vegan food The staff like I said was super nice Everything was really covid safe, (clean pens, clean blankets, clean spoons, even clean blankets if you were cold with doors open) I ended up hanging out here a couple times on my trip cause I dug it so!
google avatar

Jeannine D.

Yelp
Quaint hipster place but not much seating. The chai tea latte was good. Service good as well.

Yelp
I've been coming to Just Bob for a while, but I felt pulled to add a review after visiting them during Covid times to share what precautions they are taking. Very impressed and glad they are open. Overall: walk in, wait to be called to the register, and order with your mask on. They have hand sanitizer, a rag with bleach for extra hand cleaning, separate and clearly labelled dirty and clean pens. Need to ask for water be as it is not accessible to patrons. Free WiFi. Usually gentle oldies playing. During eat-in times: chairs were distanced and each station has dedicated outlets and dining or side tables. They are leaving the door open to allow for circulation I assume. Outdoor seating: they've had a few rickety wire bistro tables and chairs out front for forever, but they have added an entire seating section on the side of the building. There's a combo of picnic benches and dining tables, some covered with umbrellas and some not, and some are part of one of those new-fangled eating hut-things. There are not outside heaters, but they have a few blankets inside--also clearly marked used or clean--to take outside if it is chilly. There is a power strip outside for their patio lights and a barista told me to go ahead and plug in if I wanted. Dogs allowed outside! Food and drink: pretty typical cafe fare; coffees, teas, smoothies, scrambles, sandos, and bagels with shmear. Most servings are good portions with the exception of the scrambles.

Yelp
Just Bob is the BEST! They have an instantly comfy but funky vibe, the coolest play area for kids, and I have ordered almost everything off the menu and never been disappointed. My friends and family can hang there for hours and they are always welcoming. Sometimes we get lucky and get to chat with Bob himself! He is the kindest, most chill guy.
google avatar

Yelp
Popped in 9:15am Sunday morning and walked right up to the counter to order. Friendly person behind the counter commented positively on my face mask, which only musicians would recognize. Made a decent cortado and I sat alone in the window drinking it when my food arrived looking tasty. The green eggs and ham are just right for one person. The bagel was delicious and toasted perfectly. Cost of the meal was a great value. I'd certainly come back.
google avatar

Vivian P.

Yelp
Unfortunately not my cup of coffee.... I ordered a hot hazelnut latte with oatmilk and it tasted so weird... It had a weird syrup taste to it that was not nutty at all. It tasted a bit like medicine and I couldn't drink the coffee at all. I was pretty disappointed since this place seems promising with all the great reviews. Maybe try something else on the menu, don't get the hazelnut latte!
google avatar

Diana H.

Yelp
Ordered breakfast for pickup and they rocked it today! The Spielman's bagels were really good (this coming from born n bred NYers!) and the sandwiches were each made perfectly. My husband commented that his lox was absolutely amazing! My egg, cheddar and sausage sandwich was excellent and daughter loved her gluten-free bagel. Definitely love this little local spot. Support your local business!

Yelp
This place is horrible. I got away for a time. I keep coming back, seems addicting, service food decorum. ... Oh the humanities, just purchased a scramble... ba nah na bread, coffee. MORE!!! Stay away, warning you ;-). I may have to come back tomorrow..... BTW BOB all joking aside, this place is awesome! Count on me to be a good customer - again!
google avatar

Yelp
awesome find! I love how they provide support for local artists. The workers are friendly and the food and coffee are great!
google avatar

Carissa B.

Yelp
I love that you get a choice of bakery for bagels! Gabriel's bagels for me always! The food is delicious always. Cozy atmosphere for reading, working on your laptop, or catching up with a friend.

Rosana M.

Yelp
A great little hole on the wall to get fresh coffee or tea and quick delicious breakfast options. The place is very eclectic and small but we have always found a place to sit.
google avatar

Njeri P.

Yelp
Learned of this when my sister, who was visiting me, wanted a bagel for breakfast without breaking the bank (which usually happens at Spielmans). After doing some digging on Yelp, we decided to go to Just Bob. I really appreciated the ambiance of the cafe. It reminded of a 90s, early 2000s coffee shop from a sitcom. Lol. After a year of being indoors, it was so nice to see people working on their laptops at a cafe. I thought it was awesome that they offered bagels from two different local bagel shops. My sister enjoyed her bagel from Gabriel's. I ordered Spielman's cinnamon raisin bagel with cream cheese and bacon (it was so cheap compared to Spielman's. The only down side was that my bacon tasted like tofurky, which was a huge let down. I would go back for the space and for perhaps a bagel with just cream cheese.
google avatar

Isabel W.

Yelp
Ehh... Their drinks and food (got a latte, a chive shmear bagel, and a breakfast bagel) were okay, nothing special. The breakfast bagel was especially mediocre. Guy at the register wasn't the friendliest, either.
google avatar

Jennifer F.

Yelp
Great to find gluten-free bagel and vegan butter available. We were visiting Portland and wanted a good, inexpensive breakfast and found it at Just Bob. The staff was super friendly, the coffee was good, and gluten-free options were available. My husband got the Hipster Toast which was good except the bread hardly seemed toasted at all. He's not the kind to send food back so he called it Hipster Bread and got on with his morning. Knocked a star for that - if it's called toast it should be toast. Otherwise a good experience.
