Best Dining Bets in Alexandria’s Del Ray Neighborhood

"Neighborhood favorites for house-made frozen custard and doughnuts share space. Just Fine Donuts, a doughnut operation with vegan options, offers both yeasted and cake doughnuts, as well as classic Texas sausage and cheese kolaches. Dairy Godmother keeps things fresh with a rotating custard flavor of the day — and often a seasonal dessert to put a scoop on top of." - Rebecca Cooper

If I could live here, I would. From the moment you walk in, it smells like a beautiful fall morning. It smelled like fresh apple cider donuts and that scent brought me back to times going pumpkin picking on farms in upstate NY. We walked out with 6 different types of donuts, including the apple cider and it did not disappoint. Every single donut is fantastic. I’ve never been to a donut shop that every donut was so good. Highly recommend going here. We will definitely be repeat customers

Google
Just Fine Donuts should be named "Absolutely Stellar Donuts That Your Family Who Thinks Vegan Things Are Gross Loved". Always a win to show people how tasty vegan food can be. Other donut spots should take note and add some vegan options because this place was hopping. Very thankful for the huge number of ALL vegan donuts at JFD. My fave was the Salted Caramel. We have delicious donuts in Chicago but it's nice to find great spots light this when I'm home visiting.

Google
Shared 4 donuts and a fritter Chocolate covered cake donut our favorite ! Excellent donut! Rate it a 5 Boston cream yeast donut 2 didn’t care for cream taste Coconut yeast donut 3 tasty but coconut topping fell apart. Jelly donut covered with sugar 2. Didnt care for sugar and jelly. Apple Fritter 3 Coffee was freshly made. 4 Would go back for a chocolate covered donut - the small one. Would also try other donuts next time and maybe their custard. Friendly service.

Google
Very good vegan doughnuts they also have biscuits and kolaches which are none vegan. Doughnuts are nut free but seriously I went there because the reviews were so good not because of the vegan aspect and they were great

Google
Solid donuts. Great cake donuts, especially. I would say Texas Donuts has better donut holes and better prices, and Donut Run has bigger donuts, but Just Fine Donuts holds its own and warrants a visit (just ask Obama, I guess, lol). Would recommend visiting on an easy, relaxed morning, as the neighborhood has a good vibe for hanging out. Parking is a bit hard, so grab the first spot you see, even if it’s a bit farther away.

These vegan donuts are epic!! Being from the Pacific Northwest the maple “bars” (rounds here) are my absolute fav! Can’t recommend this place enough!

Google
There is more to life than donuts, but until that "more" reveals itself, Just Fine Donuts is more than just fine. They have an assortment of flavors comparable to that of Donut Run, but I'm a bigger fan of Just Fine's selection, which is a little less frilly imho. I've had the mango tajin, chocolate coconut, ube, maple bacon, and boston cream here, ranked in order of goodness. I got the first three today, and they had about 50% of the frosting on the average modern-day donut, which is still 200% more frosting than I'm a fan of on a good yeast donut -- all that to say that they are close to the ideal and have at least mastered the fundamentals here. Alright has anyone been tracking the uptick in donut frosting?? I have scraped off gobs of icing from donuts across the country in recent years. Are the donuts changing or am I? The mango tajin did have a not-too-sweet jelly filling that was perfect and frosting that could have done with a little more tajin. I was as disappointed as I could be while still being very content with the ube donut -- the frosting lacked any distinct ube flavor but there was not so much of it resulting in an overall positive experience. The chocolate coconut was 2 die 4.

The Berries & Cream Donut is hands down the best donut I’ve ever had. The dough is light and fluffy, and the frosting is creamy and not too sweet. The fresh berries on top were a nice touch, too. I highly recommend this place!

Yelp
* If you have littles - go here! * Coming from Mount Vernon, I parked a few blocks down at E. Oxford and Dewitt at Charles Hill Park. Put the kids in the stroller, walked to pick out donuts, walked back to enjoy on a bench in FULL shade. It was SO lovely. * The donuts are delish!! Holes are perfect for 1 year old hands to grab and shove in their face while my 2 year old was perfectly happy eating the frosted top half of his Donut. IYKYK. I enjoyed a lemon filled with powdered sugar.....BUT....the coffee is horrendous. Ha! BYO coffee, for sure. * Can't wait to come back!!

Yelp
We decided to wake up early on a sweltering and hot Saturday morning to try this vegan donut shop and do some shopping at the farmers market. I'm a tough critic because I'm visiting from the vegan mecca of Los Angeles! Location: This donut shop is located in the Del Rey area within the Dairy Godmother. Parking: Good luck lol. There's street parking and the streets there are so narrow. Price: average for donut shops. Disappointing to give only 6 donut holes. At my fav vegan donut shop in LA, you get a dozen! Donuts: Chocolate glazed donut with sprinkles was delicious according to the hubs. It was just enough sweetness to delight his palate. He also tried the red velvet cake donut which he wasn't as impressed about. His thoughts were that it tasted oily. My sister had the cinnamon roll and said it was also tasty. I went there on a mission to try their apple fritters. I wanted to see if it lived up to all of the buzz surrounding it. Well I was quite impressed. It wasn't overly sweet and drowning in sugary glaze was nice. Service: I had to deduct a star because the customer service was lacking. You're selling donuts people!!! Be happy!!!

Yelp
Really great donuts. Be sure to get there early and try the speciality ones. They're comparable to other donuts in terms of pricing for bakery type donuts. Service was good could have been a little friendlier in my opinion, but over fine. We love this neighborhood in the fall and spring!

Yelp
Excellent and unique donut selection. Really friendly and helpful staff. Loved the interior and the donuts were excellent!

Yelp
These donuts are Delicious! Fresh! Must try. So glad I found this on social media. Can't wait to go back again soon!

Yelp
I think vegan donuts have a bad reputation for some reason so I wasn't sure what to expect, but I love a good donut. These were great!! A friend and I got them on a whim at 7pm and they were still fresh and fluffy. I'll be back for the Samoa donut!

Yelp
The donuts are just fine and I'm not sure that that is how they intended for them to be described. Maybe so? Honestly, if you are gluten free... this will be your jam cause they really do taste like donuts. They aren't greasy or overly sugary or all of the yummy things yo get a donut for. I ONLY have a donut when the KK hot sign is on, nothing else really matters at that point lol! Everything was definitely good, I just maybe was looking for something that blew my mind & was a bit closer but not this place. The almond cookie was okay, it hurt my teeth to eat it and it was maybe a bit bland, like almonds tend to be, so I guess the mission was accomplished there. The staff was sweet and even gave me a sample to try. Give it a whirl folks, it's worth a try!!

Yelp
My wife and I made a special trip to come here. Was delicious with lots of creative flavors. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Crazy Monday's coming next week to Just Fine Donuts. This will be a limited time event. Something new for the shop to try.

Yelp
These are the best vegan donuts I've have on the entire east coast (and there have been many). They sell out quick, rightfully so! My favorite is the Boston cream and strawberry. You would never know they are vegan but so appreciate that they are so I can have them!

Yelp
Good selection of vegan donuts (cake or yeast). Quick service. The donuts were YUMMY! Will definitely return!

Yelp
A few weeks ago I checked the University of Yelp to research the best place I can get a good donut and lo and behold Just Fine donuts not only popped up here but also on my IG feed as well. Welp, I felt like I heeded the call and earned a bit of college credit by following through. These best thing about Just Fine Donuts/Dairy Godmother is the people. These are thee nicest and warm people I've ever encountered. They were so patient in explaining their offerings and even made me some fresh fritters while I was there. If nothing else, I'd return a billion times just to be made to feel like a somebody every time I enter those doors. Customer service is unmatched. Now to the good stuff. The reason we have gathered here today. The donuts. I have yet to try one that my mouth didn't rejoice over. The koloche (sweet baby Jesus swaddled in His blanky) are so delicious and fresh. The yeast glazed are so soft and pillow-like. The old-fashioned is so delightful and savory. They never miss. I've had other people's kids nearly topple me to beat me to the door and honestly, I ain't even mad! That's always a good sign in my book. Do yourself a favor and give them all your money and get that warm confidence boost by entering those doors. I really appreciate you!

Yelp
It has been a while since I've done a donut review so I felt like it was time. I am moving to this area I was hoping to find a great donut spot and I believe that I have. This place should be called Just Scrumptious! Its located inside of another store call dairy godmother. It is in a strip with many other stores. I got parking easily and I arrived about 9:15 AM on a Thursday morning. I was surprised that it wasn't crowded in the store but I was lucky to get there early so that I had a full selection. I was greeted by what I believe to be the owners who were very friendly and helpful in telling me about the different kinds of donuts, flavors, and even allowed me to sample the apple fritter (which I of course purchased and later devoured) They were all amazing. Just the right level of sweetness. Sometimes donuts are so filled with sugar but it just feels like you're having bites of sugar and not really getting to experience all of the other flavors. These have perfect texture, Fluffiness, density and satisfying mouth feel. There was a good variety of both cake and yeast donuts. Also a nice variety of toppings and fillings. This is definitely a donut shop to check out and frequent because I will be back.

Yelp
This place is a gem!! The donuts are AMAZING!! I was treated like an old friend by the owner and staff during my first visit. I had so much fun learning about all of their donuts and other sweets that they make in house. I can't wait to visit again.
google avatar

Yelp
Really great donuts! They are all vegan but even if you aren't vegan it is worth the stop for any of the donuts.
google avatar

Allison N.

Yelp
The donuts here are sooo good. They have such a wide variety every time I've been in, from cake donuts to yeast donuts and much more. When we came in on a Friday morning, the employee working let us try one of the spice cake donuts and it was *awesome*. My favorite donut so far has been the maple yeast donut. All of their donuts are vegan, which isn't really something I'd go out of my way to look for, but I appreciated that the donuts were just as good, if not better, and vegan!
google avatar

Hammed A.

Yelp
Very good vegan donuts here. They have raised yeast donuts that are prepared very well. They pull apart, are soft and are chewy the way a donut should be. All of the donuts seem to be baked daily and my favorite are the glazed donuts. The glazed donuts are very well made and are some of the best I've had in the DMV even when compared to non-vegan donut shops. My only disappointing note about this business is some of the donuts sell out well before close. In fact, I visited one morning around 10:30am and they sold out of the glazed donuts. My immediate question is how do you run out of perhaps the most popular, basic, cheapest and seemingly the simplest donut to make by 10:30am with no intent to make anymore? The donut display case was filled with other novelty donuts and it just made me wonder if this is going to be one of those good donut shops that I'll eventually leave alone because I can't bear to play the guessing game of risking driving here only to find out my favorite donuts aren't available. I've seen quite a few donut shops lose their buzz because customers either aren't able to get to the shop during morning hours to purchase donuts while they are available or the customers arrive early enough and still experience sell outs which is also discouraging. The common denominator has always been unpredictability and inconsistency. I do enjoy these donuts and will visit again. Give them a try.

Yelp
We went on a Saturday evening so the options were limited but we got a plain donut with buttercream icing and sprinkles, maple glazed, and lemon filled. The name is perfect...just fine. Maybe we got the wrong flavors but I wasn't impressed. Average donut for the price.

Yelp
I ordered 3 dozen yeast donuts from Just Fine Donuts for a party, without having sampled them beforehand, and am so glad I did. I and the 6 adults (plus numerous children) who devoured them, thought they were deliciously divine. They were light (as much as a donut can be) and fluffy, tasty and fresh, and quite large (think sugar shack size) - one bite will leave glaze or frosting on your cheeks, if you eat them like we did! I bought them early in the morning, and they were eaten in the afternoon, and were still Yum-Mazing! I also had an apple and peach fritter, which were gobbled up quickly. Our family's favorite were the glazed donuts, but the oreo crumble came in as the not too distant second. But honestly, I enjoyed all of them (chocolate glazed, chocolate with sprinkles, vanilla glazed with sprinkles, and strawberry glazed with sprinkles). I wish I took a picture of them all - very appealing in the bright pink boxes, but we ate them to quickly. I can't wait to return to try the kolaches and cake donuts!

Yelp
Stopped by to get the best Apple fritter I've ever had. They have a bakery for cookies and ice cream in the same location. Friendly staff as well. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Yummy in my tummy. I think that sums it up. Everything great, except the calories. Arrive early for best selection.

Yelp
This restaurant really needs to change its name because there is nothing just "fine" about these donuts. Everything was delicious! Tried their yeasted crème brûlée donut (delicious), and their cake-style Coffee glaze with donut crumble. I think in the future I will stick with their cake donuts but that is just my personal preference! Both were super tasty and I can't wait to try more flavors again soon.

Yelp
This is fast becoming a weekly ritual. Finding a kolache outside of TX is hard. Finding a delish one is almost impossible. Also, don't sleep on the plain glazed. Anyone can make a cereal crushed, topped donut. But it takes magic to make a good glazed, feels like biting into sweet airy bliss, donut. #TXIYKYK

Yelp
Delicious donuts - you wouldn't know they're vegan and they have a great assortment of interesting flavors. We had an issue with a large call ahead order and the owner was apologetic and gave us the order for free.

Alyse S.

Yelp
Vegan donuts are delicious, I came at 12 on a Saturday and there were a lot of options as well
google avatar

Tom L.

Yelp
Soft and delicious donuts that my entire family enjoys. The bonus is they are vegan so my oldest daughter can enjoy them as well. The people are very friendly and helpful.

J B.

Yelp
The donuts are hit or miss. I went there once and all the donuts were gone so I bought an old tasting cookie. Used to go for the frosted donuts. I changed it up and received a fritter that was raw and doughy in the middle. The service from most of the employees was fine, but a $1, $2 or $3 tip is absurd. The last two times the people behind the counter, perhaps, the owner and family have had thee nastiest dispositions. What they're selling isn't worth the price or the attitude l.
google avatar

Sarah S.

Yelp
This place is so good I can't even explain it. I didn't even like donuts until now. Now I set my alarm to make sure I get there before the kolaches run out. I'll race ya there!
google avatar

Yelp
Just Fine Donuts are more than just fine, they're amazing! We got an assortment of donuts and they all tasted great and the best part is they're vegan. These may be some of my favorite vegan donuts of all time. I happened to mention they were vegan and another customer was shocked, because they don't taste any different. Plus, you can always pair with some ice cream and make it even better.

Christopher J.

Yelp
Currently the best donuts in town. Hands down. Just Fine Donuts is operated by the same people who brought you Dairy Godmother (best soft serve in town, hands down) in effort to better utilize the space during the mornings and winter months. This is a no frills donut shop and it's great - no ultra triple monster donuts -- just your regular, run of the mill donuts. And it does them perfectly. The fritters are huge, perfectly glazed, and the right balance between soft and crispy. It looks like they take the left over fruit Dairy Godmother uses in its crisp/pie of the day, so there are nicely sized pieces of fruit inside the fritters. That also means a rotating variety of fritters to try -- and once you try one, you will be coming back for more. Plus, they open a little bit later, which means the donuts and fritters are still warm if you arrive at a reasonable hour. Strangely enough, they also sell Sausage Jalapeño Cheese Kalaches. These stick out like a sore thumb amongst the otherwise sweet selection of treats. At 9:00 am, I questioned what I was doing buying one. However, after eating one on the walk home, I get it. They are delicious. Perfectly balanced in terms of warm fresh bread, gooey cheese, a bite of sausage, and one sliver of jalapeño for just a hint of spice. The taste of it sticks with you for a short while after eating it, making you wonder which you preferred more, the sweet fritter or the flavorful kalache, because both were fantastic. The people there are wonderfully kind and the prices are fair - two donuts, the giant fritter, and a sausage jalapeño cheese kalache (a lot of food) for under $10. The giant pink donut boxes are a nice, feel good touch. Today was actually our third time there and they are consistently this good. Simply put: They just get it. I look forward to watching as they grow this side of the business and tinker with their selection of donuts. I genuinely can't wait to see what they come up with next.
google avatar

Kyle M.

Yelp
I've always been a donut fan, but these are just on a whole other level. I didn't even know they were vegan until I saw an article about this place. The donuts are soft, fluffy, warm (if you get there early enough), and just absolutely delicious. The owner is a really nice guy too. I'm very lucky that I live a little over a mile away, otherwise I'd be there every single day. If you like donuts you really need to run try these.
google avatar

Ericka J.

Yelp
I live a good do it and the glazed from this spot was big and not too sweet and not to much!!! I also got two sugar cake donuts with sprinkles and my girls loved them! Will def be back!!
google avatar

Gary F.

Yelp
Gone there twice before noon to buy donuts. They were sold out. Wish I could give them an actual review of their donuts.
google avatar

Morgan W.

Yelp
Very tasty donuts! I went right at opening on a Friday and was able to purchase any donuts available that day. I ended up going with 3 yeast donuts and really enjoyed all of them. I'm not vegan myself, but certainly appreciate plant-based alternatives, and would choose these donuts over many "regular" donuts. Definitely recommend!

Shay S.

Yelp
This place is sooo much better than "fine"! It's the apex predator of donut shops! I'm picky about cake donuts and frequently find most places make them too heavy or greasy - this place does them to perfection! My husband's apple fritter was as good as they get - light, fluffy, slightly crisp at the edge with the apple chunks well-incorporated throughout. He said its one of the best apple fritters he's ever had (which is a lot cuz he's a fritter snob). Oh and the music is amazing there too.
google avatar

Diane N.

Yelp
Drive 15 min out of my way after checking the website hours only to find out they were "closed" on a Tuesday because they happened to be open the day before, President's Day. Never again.

Julie D.

Yelp
We get donuts once a year. We used to get donuts once a year. But now I know about these donuts. These are without a doubt the best donuts...on the east coast. Seriously. I can't believe it doesn't have more reviews. We only tried the yeast donuts and the peach fritter and they were delicious. Tucked inside of Dairy Godmother in Del Ray. Go. Get donuts. The only way you will be disappointed is if they are out of donuts.

John P.

Yelp
Amazing donuts - we loved the yeast and the cider variety. The fritters are other worldly! It's like a blend of funnel cake and pie - just perfection. The staff is so friendly and the food is amazing!
