What To Carry Out on the Way to Penn Station

"This place was a real surprise when it hit town across the street from Penn Station last year, a pho parlor that specialized in the beef soup as it’s eaten in Hanoi, where it was originally sold by street vendors. This is a fundamental version, with superior rice noodles, and few of the herbs and add-in sauces favored by the Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) version of the soup. If soup seems too messy for your train ride, get the Hanoi style fried rice or crab spring rolls instead." - Robert Sietsema

A great little pho spot near Columbia! The beef short rib pho was a standout—tender, meaty, and super flavorful. The garlic wings were crispy and loaded with flavor, definitely a must-try appetizer. We did wait around 25 minutes for our noodles, which felt a bit long, and there’s a built-in 20% minimum tip on the bill, so just a heads-up. That said, the food really hit the spot and the cozy atmosphere made it a nice place to hang out. Worth a visit if you’re in the area and not in a rush!

Google
They have the best beef broth on the UWS. Yes, I’ve tried them all, Karen. Sure, it’s a bold statement but I write what my tongue tells me. It’s rich and has depths of flavor, like my soul. Their menu is solid. I’ve yet to be disappointed after 2 + years, unlike my relationships. HH options are decent. Portion to price is standard. Service is friendly and efficient. Vibe is chill; it’s a neighborhood spot. It’s worth a train ride for the broth alone.

Google
Their beef-pho broth was one of my favorites. They make their broth for hours so it is full of collagen. Garlic butter chicken was their home-made recipe which was a highlight of the appetizer. Spring rolls were super fresh. Sake platter comes in different sizes. Overall, would definitely come back.

Google
Their servers were really attentive and gave out recommendations which helped us a lot. The servings were really big and you can’t just finish the soup for sure. Could definitely be good for sharing. There’s a lot of choices and in having a cold weather you are in the right place. Spring rolls for appetizer were good, would recommend!

Google
I’ve always found comfort in Vietnamese food and this place was absolutely no exception. I was very curious with the broth as the menu and signs around the restaurant indicate that they spend a lot of time perfecting their broth with different ingredients that are good for different parts of the body. There are so many things that I think make a restaurant stand out, but one thing I don’t see that often is when The owner of the restaurant and creator of the dishes takes time to explain each and every ingredient that gets incorporated into their broth and the benefits of those ingredients for the human body. When someone deeply cares about what’s going into their dishes, the outcome is almost always perfect. I don’t live terribly close to this restaurant, but I’ve already been back a handful of times as the service and quality really stood out.

so delicious! we got the chicken wings and spring rolls as appetizers which had such subtle but beautiful flavors. the coffee and sake flight are a must too. the beef pho was literally amazing. coming back all the time for these!!

I Was Craving Pho So Bad &’ Every Place I’ve Seen Has Been In Queens Or Brooklyn. I Came Across This Place On Google That Was Actually Somewhat Close To Where I Live. I Decided To Give It A Try With My Family Because The Pho Looked So Good In The Pictures. For Appetizers We Ordered The Sugarcane Shrimp, Lemon Grass Wings &’ Vegetable Spring Rolls. For Our Main Course, I Ordered The Short-Rib Pho &’ Let Me Say It Was Nothing Short About It. It Was A Nice Huge Piece Of Rib In My Pho &’ I Enjoyed Every Moment Of It. My Husband Ordered The Oxtail Pho &’ Then Our Babies Had The Chicken Pho. What Made Me Really Love This Place Was Being Able To Dress Up My Pho With The Condiments Like How I Make Kathiew At Home ( Hoisin Sauce, Sriracha, Hot Chili Paste) n Then The Pho Comes With Jalepenos, Scallions, Onions n More. The Pho Was So Tasty, Hot &’ Flavorful. The Meat Was Very Tender &’ All In All This Was An Incredibly Delicious, VERY FILLING Meal. I Will Definitely Be Back.

Google
Nice little place with good pho, a very decent happy hour 7 days a week (from 3pm to 6pm) and attentive service. Grilled pork lettuce wrap was unusual and delicious; papaya salad fresh and flavorful

Yelp
I only half jokingly describe the pho here as life changing, I think it's the best bowl I have ever had, the broth is just amazing. Really nice little spot too, as far as pho can have ambience. The service is great too. Lunch special prices are definitely the way to go here.

Yelp
Overall rating is a 3.5, but since Yelp doesn't allow half stars so I'm rounding up. Tried this place twice in the past 6 months, and the in-person experience was great while the delivery experience was a bit disappointing. Dine-in: The staff are great - friendly, knowledgeable and attentive - and service was on point. Food portions were good for the price and food was tasty overall - pho was good, just a lil salty, papaya salad was fresh, sweet & had a lovely kick too. Delivery: Food arrived cold, there were missing items and it was meh overall. Wouldn't do delivery again, but yes to dine-in when I'm in the area.

Yelp
When I first saw this place, I was really excited to have a Vietnamese spot down the block from my place. We decided to try it one cold night, and we were greeted by such a friendly owner. She described her process for making the broth, and seemed really passionate about her food. You can also tell by the interior that there was a lot of care placed in the design of the place - from the placemat to the wall decor. When the food came out, the aroma and flavor of the broth gave such comfort. We got the signature short rib pho and the meat was tender and fell off the bone. The only issue that we had was the portion. For a $27 dish, it was not filling. The flavors were all there but the portion was just not sufficient. Looking at the other pho options, $20 for the signature and $17 for the chicken, it just seems to be too expensive of a place for the amount of food you get to be something that I would frequent.

Yelp
Great service, good food, and flavors and small, quaint, and cozy. Came on a Sunday late afternoon. Ordered the oxtail pho. It was huge! With the oxtail pho, you get an additional choice of meat, so I got the brisket. Oxtail was very tender, and the brisket was nice and fatty. Pho came out piping hot and highly recommend the homemade chili oil, it was soooo good. I'll be back!

Yelp
The pho is DIVINE!!!!! Both the chicken pho and the vegetarian pho are EXTRAORDINARY!!! Never tasted any soup that ever came close to how delicious this is. Wan, the owner, is a joy. She cares deeply about her customers and greets each one. One time, when I asked for chopsticks and they didn't have any for takeout, she handed me a pair of the ones she uses for the restaurant and told me to take them. I was so impressed. Of course I brought them back the next day with my gratitude, and she was delighted. The price is high, but it reflects the first class quality of the ingredients. I treat myself to this when I need and/or crave it.

Andrea G.

Yelp
The pho is not bad, but I paid almost $30 for a signature pho with bok choy through UberEats, and there was maybe 4 pieces of bok choy, 1 piece of brisket, 1 small piece of beef eye round, and a small portion of noodles. A total rip off and I will not be ordering from here again. If this restaurant expects to remain on the UWS, I suggest that it reconsider its cheap business practices. Edit: just found a hair in the soup. 0 stars. Disgusting and very unhygenic. Do not eat here, order your pho from Banh on 107 and Amsterdam instead.

Penny F.

Yelp
To start, the table was sticky. And then they ran out of rice (this was at about 7:00 on a weeknight ). And then of the two appetizers and two main courses everything was bland. Really bland.
google avatar

Yelp
I'm always super critical of Vietnamese restaurants being that my mother ran a restaurant back in the day in Vietnam. Just Pho You didn't hit the spot for me. Ordered the signature pho grand and it was very bland and lacked the depth in broth and aromatics you'd expect from a good bowl of pho. I shouldn't have to use the hoisin and Sriracha to add flavor to the pho. Even then, it was still bland, and I had to request more sauce. I still finished the bowl, but this place won't be on my rotation of places to go for pho in the UWS. Ambiance, though, is really nice and love the setting. It's just too bad this will be a one and done for me.

Yelp
I recommend Just Pho You on the Upper West Side in 101st Street and Broadway. My fiancée and I had the lemon grass wings and the vegetarian spring rolls as an appetizer. For the entree we had beef short rib pho. The food is AMAZING. You will not be disappointed. Also the owner her name is Wan she was very welcoming and hospitable. The experience was awesome. I will definitely come again.

Yelp
Stopped in for dinner on a weekday. I was feeling particularly hungry so I ordered two entrees. 5/5 Lemongrass chicken vermicelli bowl - scrumptious. Absolutely delicious. The lemongrass chicken has so much flavor. Ingredients are well balanced in the bowl in terms of texture and portion. 3.5/5 Pho - broth was thin and the flavor didn't have depth. It was a fine broth but not the best compared to other places in the area. There was a good portion of meat in the bowl and the noodles had a good texture (not too starchy). The pho was good aside from the broth not being too rich. I finished almost the entire two portions in one sitting. I saved a little bit of the lemongrass vermicelli because it was so good I wanted to have some of it the next day. Would return for the lemongrass chicken. So good!! The staff was nice. The woman who took my order asked me if i wanted one item to come out before the other. I said no. When the server brought the two entrees out he told me "good for you" and that he was surprised when he saw the order come in It does seem like a place trying to elevate asian food from the interior to the pop music they play. They were advertising an event celebrating the restaurant's birthday. They'll be doing a multi-course beef dining experience. It seemed interesting. I do have to say that their bathroom is gross. It didn't look dirty but it smelled like it. They keep an oil diffuser/humidifier in the bathroom so it smells like essential oil and urine at the same time, plus its humid. I wouldnt use the bathroom there again unless i absolutely had to. Docked a star because they have pho in their name but i thought it was okay. And also because of their bathroom

Yelp
Got takeout again. Another miss. Got the pho grand without some meats and it was inedibly salty - had to add a cup of water. Called back like owner suggested below and was offered credit for next time or a replacement. Opted for credit on order next time, will see if it's honored.

Yelp
I was hoping for more. Just got the grand pho lunch special. It cost $16. I'm scared to ask what the regular price is. But that's not the worst. The grand pho is a bunch of different meats. What they don't mention is it is literally one piece of each. So meat is actually very sparse in this dish. Furthermore the soup lacks depth, which was the most unfortunate part of this entire experience. I felt like I had a big bland bowl of noodles.
google avatar

Yelp
Ordered the JPY vegetarian pho with Shrimp. The Pho is mediocre, nothing to go out of your way for but definitely the best option if you live in the area. But this review is not for the pho it's for the $7 shrimp I paid to add to the pho. They gave me two mini shrimp CUT IN HALF for $7. It felt like robbery and the restaurant should be ashamed to serve it at that price. Buyer beware.

Yelp
I took Wan up on her offer to come by the store. I ordered chicken pho and I had them put some mixed vegetables in it. It was so good! She stated that taking care of her customers is their #1 priority, and I believe it. I will order from this business again.
google avatar

Latrycia B.

Yelp
My order was absolutely horrible. The broth container was broken and leaked all over the entire bottom of the bag; all the meat, veggies, and sauces were all waterlogged. The remaining broth was ice cold and the meat lukewarm. Being a regular pho lover in my area (I'm from the DC area), I have never received something so poor. Hope the next customer gets a better order. I will not order from this establishment again.

Yelp
Found this place after needing some warm broth after a tough night of drinking. Very clean restaurant and when we went around 2pm the restaurant was empty and were seated immediately. Got the signature short rib pho and was not disappointed. The meat was so tender and not dry at all. They give you a knife to cut the meat and was really helpful in cutting the short rib. They give you a side of bean sprouts/basil/lime which i forgot to take a picture of. The broth is very smooth and clean. Almost as if I was having a healthy version of Pho (best way I can describe it). Not bad but wish I had a Pho that was bit more stronger seasoned base. They give the hoisin/sriracha sauce on the side and had to keep asking for another sauce dish. Wish they could keep the bottles at the table for convenience. Good place overall if you like pho that has a clean, healthy broth taste! Service was excellent!
google avatar

Giselle G.

Yelp
I came here and I must say it was good. I really enjoyed the lemongrass wings and I had the pho. My friend has the pork belly which was interesting because it was not crispy not crunchy. The pork belly was soft but my friend loved it. The pho I had was good but I have had better pho and would say it was not very flavorful. We also had a spring roll and it was ok as well. The wings which were very delicious were crispy and very flavorful.

Juan T.

Yelp
In my opinion, a good bowl of pho reminds you of being loved, unconditionally. Maybe thats just because the hot liquid provides a similar warmth in our gut, or maybe the warm soup brings us back to a time of being young and ill, and of having our parent or grandparent nurse us back to health. I choose to believe it's the latter. Although this pho was good, solid even, I can't say it brought be back to that feeling of unconditional love. Maybe it reminded me of an adult, conditional love that, though isn't perfect, gets us through our day to day. Is functional, mature, and practical. I will come back and enjoy this pho. And you should too. I hope it brings you back to that feeling of juvenile unconditional love, even if it couldn't do that for me.
google avatar

Vanessa M.

Yelp
Customer service was excellent and the place is nice. I ordered the signature beef pho with no meatballs, the broth could use a little more flavor/salt, it was sort of bland. I was pretty disappointed that they had no siracha - I know there's a shortage but even a dupe of one would have been great. Although food wasn't too special their staff was very kind, welcoming, and attentive.
google avatar

Marie C.

Yelp
The decor, music, host/ waiter really makes this place stand out. I got the lunch special Grand Lunch. The broth was a little hot and once I added the items like the bean sprouts, lime, 1 slice of jalapeño and the sauces the broth became luke warm. Which they tell you. I've had Pho other places but they don't get that cool instantly. That must have been the driest brisket I've ever had. Wasn't sure if the meatball was actually meat. Also every time a piece of fat got into my mouth it gave me the mouth feel of mucus. The wine was really good. Wish they gave me a little bit more of the wine.

Yelp
Ordered take out from here and was very pleased with the vegetarian options on their menu! The Tofu Banh Mi was great! The veggies were well seasoned, flavorful and fresh. The bread was a little chewy, not as fresh and soft as hoped for but perhaps I just caught an off day. The vegetarian Pho was equally delicious, good portion and really well seasoned. I really enjoyed my entire meal and would recommend it to any vegetarians looking for a good vietnamese meal! I can't wait to dine here in person at some point.
google avatar

Kitty C.

Yelp
I happened by JPY a couple weeks ago, and took home some pho and a banh mi just to try it out. Since then, I've eaten there 3 times! After that first time, I found myself dreaming about the exceptional crunch of the bread and crispy freshness of the vegetables, the flavor of the pork, the crunch of the roll of the banh mi; the rich broth and tender meat of the pho. I was never a huge fan of either pho or banh mi. I guess I hadn't had them done right. Most Vietnamese food I've had tastes pretty fast-food-ish. And I had a green tea--yes, plain old green tea--and I saw why green tea is such a valued drink in many countries. I'm Chinese, and I never cared for it, always too bitter, too strong or too weak. Now I can enjoy the health benefits, as well as the taste! So I'm a happy camper. The owner/manager Wan is always most welcoming. They're not far from my home. Can't wait to try everything on the menu!

Yelp
Happened to pass by this place while on the UWS and was super excited to see a new highly-rated pho place that I hadn't been to yet in NYC! Pho is by far my favorite comfort foods, I always eat pho when I'm sad, sick, cold, etc, which ends up being kinda often I guess hahaha. Suffice to say, I've been to most of the pho places in Manhattan. First, the lemongrass wings were so flavorful, and I loved the texture of the skin as well as the extra crunch the garlic added. The broth in the pho was very rich and also wonderfully flavored. In my opinion, broth is the most important part of pho, and you won't find a watered down version of it here. The broth was beefy and hearty and full of herby goodness. The only critique I can offer is that it was a tad too sweet for me, and I already like my broths on the slightly more sweet side. I hope they open more stores downtown! The location is a bit out of the way for me, but if I'm in the area again, I would definitely come back.

lauren ..

Yelp
Absolutely love this place! About 15 tables and has beautiful decor. Had the short rib pho -delicious. Started with crispy spring roll. Everything was hot and fresh. It's my 15 year old niece's favorite place. The owner said people come from all the boroughs to dine here. Lucky I am only 4 blocks away!

Ada C.

Yelp
Had a PHOnominal 7 course meal at the sold out 1 year anniversary of Just Pho You 2 weeks ago. The collaboration between Chef Wan and Chef Nancy N (Eleven Madison Park) was a masterpiece and exceed our expectations! The 7 course meal was well thought and in my opinion, should be a permanent menu option on the weekends with 2 seatings Looking forward to your 2nd Anniversary and cannot wait to see how you will be celebrating
google avatar

Dasha Y.

Yelp
The best pho in NY for sure! We always go back there! It's a very clean and nice restaurant - everyone there is super kind and polite!
google avatar

Olivia P.

Yelp
If it wasn't for the service, I would give less stars. Service was pretty good. Servers were nice and attentive for the most part. The pho, however, was subpar. I complained that there was more fat in my pho than meat, and they had someone come from the kitchen to explain to me that it was tendon. I understand that these parts of the meat are used to flavor the broth but I usually don't get served this amount. Regardless, there was more of the attached photo floating in the broth then actual meat. Considering that they charge $18 for the pho, I would like to see more substantial ingredients.

Santi S.

Yelp
Loved the beef pho and the crème brûlée!, our table also ordered the Vegetable pho and they loved it. The place is gorgeous! perfect for pics... Service was great! coming back
google avatar

Ernie R.

Yelp
The food is delicious and the staff is very attentive!! Go when Wan is there and she can make any recomendation!! Small and intimate with outdoor seating also!! My favorite is the JPY Banh Mi+pork sandwich!!

Kersten O.

Yelp
Ordered lunch from JPY and it was great! Vegetarian pho had so much flavor- I didn't miss the beef! We also got vegetable spring rolls, which were very good - the lightly pickled peppers & cabbage accompaniment was the perfect crisp, cool to go with them. Service was very friendly & efficient despite being busy, I wasn't overlooked. The space is comfortable and airy. I'll definitely be back.

David B.

Yelp
Excellent tofu banh mi. Bread was fresh, crunchy and just warm enough. Great service. Nice atmosphere. Not cheap, but worth it.
google avatar

James J.

Yelp
Admittedly I'm not a huge pho eater, but among the UWS places I've been to this has the hands-down best pho. I've also tried their lettuce wrap and lemongrass chicken wings, both of which are marvelous. I don't know if they mostly do delivery, but the times I've been there the restaurant has always been rather empty--it could also be that I eat my dinner relatively early. But the service is always impeccable, with some of the nicest waiters I've seen.

Georgia P.

Yelp
delicious chicken pho! everyone was super nice and the serving sizes are huge so lots of great leftovers
google avatar

CJ D.

Yelp
My friend and I came here because we found a nice Groupon deal for it. I've never had Pho and always wanted to, so it seemed like a good way to try it without breaking the pocket for it. We arrived pretty early to avoid the crowds as space is pretty small and they don't provide outdoor seating. Once inside, decor was ok and the place was clean enough. As there were only two other tables occupied besides ours, we didn't have to wait long to order or for our food to arrive. The staff was very attentive and nice. For that I would have given this restaurant probably 4-5 stars. Unfortunately, the food brought it down to 3 stars. We ordered the Crispy Pork Spring Rolls as an appetizer. It comes with 2 pieces cut into 4. So my friend and I had two halves each. It was ok. A little dry and lacking of flavor. I've had better at other locations. For the entree: my friend had the Lemongrass Pork Chop (forgot to take a pic) and I had the JYP Signature Pho - Grand (see pic). According to my friend, her pork was dry as grass. Thank goodness for dipping sauce. However, she said the rice was pretty good (but who messes up rice in my opinion. A restaurant should not be open if you can't cook rice. Just saying ^_^). As for my Pho, that wasn't great either. I've never had Pho before but I don't think it should be salty. I ended up just eating the meat and vegetables, had none of that broth. It looked so good too when it came to the table and I was so excited. Will definitely be trying Pho again, just not from this location. So anyone coming here, if you like your food bland, dry, or salty, this is the perfect place for you.. ^_^ Or maybe we just came on the day the chef was having a bad day. I mean, this place has four and a half stars overall on Yelp, so it has to be good to a good amount of ppl, right?!
google avatar

Ha D.

Yelp
Disappointed in the pho. I was recommended this place cause of great reviews but the pho broth was so so. Kinda of bland in my opinion. Extra broth cost 7 bucks FYI.
google avatar

Emma Z.

Yelp
Well. I ordered the Braised Pork Belly for takeout. You can see that the bottom of the bowl is not even fully covered, the height of the meat is less than 1/3 of the bowl. It tasted good but the portion was really shocking consider they charged $19 before tax. I have to order another dinner.
google avatar

Christine W.

Yelp
Amazing! The food was incredible and the care that the owner takes of her food and her customers is top notch! The flavors were brilliant, a must try!
google avatar

Maureen C.

Yelp
You know when you are so hungover you could die and the only thing to bring you back to life will be the right food, and you must be very careful to order correctly because your heart can't take another disappointment? Well, look no further. Nothing here will disappoint you. The bone marrow pho will hug you from the inside and rock your inner child to sleep. The sugarcane shrimp will wipe your sad tears away but replace them with tears of joy. Need a switch up mid meal, better get that papaya salad to really complete the experience. It's almost like it erased all those text messages you sent out last night. ALMOST. Run don't walk to this hidden gem with literally the best pho in New York City. If you love yourself
google avatar

Seema M.

Yelp
Super delish and was adjusted to be low carb to suit my dietary needs; more sprouts instead of noodles. Hot jasmine tea is strong and yummy!

Huong T.

Yelp
I suddenly craved for a bowl of pho and didn't expect much from a restaurant in this neighborhood. However, the pho was surprisingly really good. The owner was very excited to tell me that it's her new recipe. It's probably the best pho I had in Manhattan so far (I am vietnamese btw)
google avatar

Dude O.

Yelp
Phocking Awesome! Tried the signature Pho. Looking forward to the lemongrass chicken next.

Kat T.

Yelp
Love this place! I went for the first time two days ago for lunch though I've lived in the neighborhood for years. The place is nicely decorated with a good ambience, fun music (though a touch loud). The food was fresh and delicious and the host and waiter so nice and friendly. I will definitely return.
google avatar

Maury M.

Yelp
Just had dinner and it was great!! We had spring rolls and bahn mi sandwiches. Really great bread too! Very impressive quality and quantity of food. Service was great very friendly. Will definitely go back...

Justin G.

Yelp
Amazing spot! I stopped in on a Sunday night to grab some take out and everything was delicious! We got the signature pho, the short rib pho, lettuce wraps and wings. Recommend them all! Plus it was a delight to meet Wan the owner/chef! This place just opened within the last year and is one of my favorites in the neighborhood! Just Pho You is a 10/10!!!
google avatar

Wei D.

Yelp
I had the vegetarian Signature Pho. There were just a few slices of carrots, no tofu and no bok choy, which the menu mentioned. On top of that, the soup was extreme salty. It lacked any flavor and was just play salty,, The second item we order was the pork belly. The port belly lacked any taste nor texture. Again his dish was way too salty.. The last item we order was the chicken wing. The dish came out okay, but nothing special. My advice for management is that i wish they can be more generous with the vegetables pho and reduce the amount of salt in there. Almost everything tasted salty and was high in sodium.
google avatar

Greg A.

Yelp
New place which is sparkling clean. Fresh flavorful pho. Try the papaya salad too. My date loved the Vietnamese iced coffee.
google avatar

Lourdes C.

Yelp
I came in for lunch and ordered the pork lettuce wrap which was DIY and not bad. I ordered the Pho pork belly and they failed to mention they didn't have it that day. Gave me pork belly with rice which was very underwhelming. I wish they would have told me it wasn't available so that I could have ordered something else. I didn't want to make a fuss because they are clearly still new. They gave me pork belly drenched in oil and the rice had zero flavor. I couldn't even eat it. The Hot tea which is $5 by the way had a very strong lemongrass flavor which didn't compliment the food at all. Customer service communication definitely needs improvement. I absolutely hate when restaurants just give me what they want. I doubt I'll be back.

George W.

Yelp
Came to this place and had grand pho, soup is pretty good, place is clean, but it had 3 pieces of meat? The pho shop has a lot more meat in standard portion and also has option for the extra meat: such as the pho king, 2 or 3 dollars more. So, still hungry, Went on to order the bahmi sandwich, really good sandwich, suggest to add lemon grass pork sandwich, that's a popular choice! Hope your restaurant really succeed, as I read you are a new restaurant owner. Many other reviewers already mentioned of the portion, I suggest adding more meat to standard and give option for extra brisket/eye round etc, and also option for extra noodle on the side. You can try the restaurant bahn a couple street over, their pho has too! much meat.

Toby L.

Yelp
Only speaking about the lunch special. Got the Signature grand pho lunch and the braised pork belly lunch Expect to grab a pizza and or another meal because you won't be full.

Yelp
This place is new so we decided to check it out, wow! Chef really cares a lot and the food was delish. Pho was really savory (and big). I got the Bahn Mi, apparently is new on the menu, the vegtables were super fresh and they used meats I hadn't had in a Bahn Mi before. So good!
