"Schillinger is a name that resonates particularly strongly in Alsace. First there was Jean, then there was his son Jean-Yves, who, after a period on the New York City restaurant scene (Destinée, Olica), returned home in 2002. Here in this restaurant bordering the Champ-de-Mars Park, he is full of bright ideas. His cuisine embraces one tradition after another with disconcerting ease – Alsace, the United States, Brittany and Japan. Confident in his strengths, he deploys a no-holds-barred approach – as in, for example, his Breton lobster cooked in a Cona coffee maker and served with the claw in a spring roll and fresh herb agnolotti, or a medley of green apple textures flanked by a seafood lemon and caviar sorbet..., not to mention the trolley laden with exquisite bite-sized desserts. A unique experience and exceptional flavours." - Michelin Inspector

The dinner at JY’s was one of our gourmet highlights of the cycling trip in Alsace in September. First reason is that they have accommodated my wife’s FODMAP sensitivities with the adjustment of the tasting menu. That does not happen very often in ** Michelin star restaurants. Service was meticulously organized. My only observation that was unusual was that we split one wine tasting with a single shared glass at each course. At the end of the meal the dessert chef mentioned that their ice cream and sorbet contain sorbitol which is a big offender in FODMAP sensitivity so this really confirmed their concern about the customer’ health. Finally, our dinner ended in the kitchen to chat with owner and Michelin chef and the photo of that pleasant surprise is attached to this review. We are definitely coming back.

We had a mixed experience. The ambiance was pleasant, but the food was inconsistent. The main course was excessively salty, making it difficult to eat, and the service was quite slow. We also found the sommelier to be slow and unhelpful with our wine selection. We hoped for a better experience overall.

We (group of 4 wine enthousiasts) chose the 10-course menu with wine paring. Highlights were a course with green peas, imaginative and flavorfull and green asparagus with tagliatelle from calamari. The main course was Waygu beef, well prepared, great match with the Vega Sicilia Pintia, however, the beef famously contains 50% fat which I could not stomach (yay for my table mates). But then the misses: First and foremost - the toast served with the foie gras was burned black to a crisp, inedible. The not even dime sized dollop of reduced aromatic liqueur was way too small for the substantial amount of uninspired foie gras. The dish was paired with a white Pinot Noir, a total miss pairing wise. The filled cabbage course had potential flavor-wise but was so mushy that it totally missed the point. The bouillabaisse with red mullet smelled (and tasted) so fishy that I only took one bite. The cheese course was made with Osseau-Iraty (very strong cheese) with figs (not sweet enough to match the cheese) and paired with a white Port. Another miss pairing wis. The wines were average, definitely not meeting expectations (except for the Toro) and the pairings were often not too great. The service was choreographed, making it far from invisible. To sum it up: my expectations were high, but I walked away deflated. So was my wallet: the bill was almost 450 euros.

Beautiful ambiance and lots of privacy on spacious tables spread out through the restaurant. The food was absolutely flawless, presentation was creative and exciting, the dishes unique and delicious. There were at least 4-5 dishes that I will remember for a long time! We enjoyed the 10 courses and sat for 3.5 hours that were an absolute pleasure. The only small point of criticism was, that our server wasn’t too attentive pouring our glasses and never brought out another bottle of water I ordered, had he been a bit more attentive, we would have easily and happily went through a third bottle of champagne.

Incredibly well-run establishment. The staff were attentive and delightful. The food was creative and beautifully presented. I particularly enjoyed the octopus and Wagyu “noodle” bowl, the shellfish soup, and the barely-cooked scallop. But at the end of the day, I am a dessert person, and their chocolate grapefruit dessert might be the best dessert I’ve ever been served.

JY's was a great experience. Sitting in the middle of a beautiful park with exquisite metal animal sculptures throughout the restaurant set the tone. The presentation was incredible on each plate. I opted for the 6 course option with wine pairing. The highlights were the amuse bunch, especially the incredibly unique caeser salad, and the liquid nitrogen ice cream made table side. Overall I had a wonderful time however for a 2 Michelin starred restaurant I would have expected a little more especially from the middle courses of the menu. Would recommend.

What a delightful time spent at Jean-Yves Schillingers wonderful Restaurant! Both Michelin stars are well deserved. The setting is very elegant, the wait staff super attentive, but not intrusive, and the food is sublime. Bring at least 3h of time with you to fully enjoy this place. We will come back, that is for certain!
