The chef was good... The food was better and the atmosphere was nice when you first walked into the building but once you walk to the hibachi spot maybe not so much. Our servers were punctual with the drinks and they didn't keep refilling it when I've only had a couple of drinks. I hate that. I can say that everything was clean. No spots on the forks or dishes. Empty plates were promptly taken. I even left a fork on 1 plate and they didn't take it..... TRUE PROFESSIONALS!

Google
Friendly staffs and funny chefs. You should try hibachi lunch. They have corn in fried rice and they customize your options, which is really nice!

Google
We had a GREAT chef he was funny and we had a great time n dinner tooo!!!

The crab rangoons are delishhh. The sauce they come with is to die for! Lunch portions were good, and everything was fresh and tasted great!

Google
Everything was great until the end. They started bringing us boxes as soon as the chef left. Our plates were JUST pushed over to us and they came over with boxes. Definitely made us feel rushed. We didn't ever get a chance to do anything as far as my birthday, which was part of why we went there.

Normally this is one of the best places that I take my family. After tonight I will no longer be going to kabuto's. Fujiyama's is the only place for us I guess. We were treated with much disrespect. Everybody at the table ordered steak and chicken for some reason my portion size was a quarter of everyone else's. Not saying much but I was the biggest person at that table. Yet my portion size was the size of a childs. They didn't charge for my plate and told me I could still keep it. After I boxed it up they tried to take it from me so they could throw it away. They lost a faithful customer today. We have spent thousands at this particular restaurant and never had a problem like this in the past. Very disappointed.

Google
They are like the best hands down!!! I wish they offered memberships lol. I always order everything… started off with a beer and a water then I ordered the shrimp tempura sushi roll… then the clear soup then the side salad… then I ordered the hibachi steak and shrimp dinner with extra vegetables in my fried rice

Google
Horrible service! I watched 3 people come in and order 20 minutes after me and got their food and left before I did. 3 different people came out to ask if I have an order just for them to never take my ticket back. Finally after an hour of sitting they finally put my order in.

Hi I Am A.

Yelp
I love coming to Kabuto, not only for the fun and one of a kind experience but the food is always amazing. I've been coming here for years, and I love the environment. the staff and cooks are always nice and friendly and I appreciate them all so much!

Yelp
this restaurant serves the best Japanese food and drinks of all kinds. they fry and cook your dinner in front of you. You can feel the heat from the flame and smelll the food as they cooking it. I think cheaper than most all other steak resttaunts and service is fast.

Yelp
I'm going to be honest, I'm a hard critic. Over all this is a good place, however, they could do better. For starters, we was not asked if we wanted to be at the hibachi table, was just seated at a normal table. As this is my first time, I'm pretty sure there was seating not at the grill that we may have opted for with a small child. I got a crunchy roll and the chicken hibachi dinner. The broth was saltier than any broth I've ever had before but good flavor. The ginger dressing on the salad was a little strong as well. The crunchy roll was good but could have had more flavors and crunch. It's one of my favorites I've gotten other places so I feel like in comparison it could have had more of the crunchy topping and flavor/sauces drizzled on top. The hibachi was good too, not many veggies as most hibachi places serve. In fact, mine was mostly onion and slivers of carrots. I got one piece of broccoli. Even the fried rice was just corn and egg added. Maybe I'm wrong but most of the time they have carrots and peas too. It was good but I felt like even the show was less interactive than most. My total was 26 and some change. With tip, $32.

Yelp
My favorite hibachi place! I always get the steak and shrimp and give my vegetables to my husband but it's usually big serving and I have to force myself to eat all of my food! Soup and salad are good comes with ranch French or house (ginger) dressing The cooks are alway fun and nice and the servers are great too The place is a little dark inside sometimes but you can still see around

Debra G.

Yelp
The grandchildren choose this for the fun show on the grill so that I can appreciate. The red snapper was dry and crumbling to pieces and shrimp was burnt, and they don't distribute vegetables and rice very equally among diners. Service isn't the best but the ambience is full of family fun. The look and enjoyment on the children's faces makes it more tolerable.

Yelp
Food tastes amazing! The waitresses will make sure you are well taken care of. I've really never had an issue here. The restaurant as a whole is very clean and well kept. Highly recommend!

Ryan M.

Yelp
My family has gone here for well over a decade and we love it. The only issues we have are the language barriers, servers or takeout not listening or messing up orders, and the servers shoving you out the door the second your food hits the table. You quite literally have 5 minutes to eat once the chef leaves before the servers are coming around asking if you want to go boxes. The worst parts of take out are the language barrier, constantly messing up orders, and though the menu says your order comes with x, y, and z. They actually don't give you what the menu says and tells you "Togo orders don't come with what the menu says" yet you pay the same price? Makes no sense. They messed my order up 3 straight times so I told them that when I ordered my next meal and told them I will check it at the counter. I picked my order up 10 min later and it was wrong again. ALWAYS CHECK YOUR ORDER BEFORE YOU LEAVE.

Yelp
My favorite place to go to . Has the best house dressing out of all the hibachi steak houses in Indy . Very many good memories here

Yelp
My wife and I went here for date night and it was absolutely lovely. The menu was reasonably priced and absolutely delicious. The hot sake went down like water and next time I go, I'll make sure to get an XL it was so good. The food was phenomenal and the chefs quite a lot of fun. It was also cheaper than the first date spot we ended up at like five minutes up the road for more food and higher quality ingredients. I can't wait to go back!

Yelp
This place used to be our go to. I've been coming here for years honestly as long as I can remember but lately it's not been the same. We came for lunch yesterday and our chef was incredibly rude and seemed confused on who ordered what at our table, we ordered extra rice (as always) because we don't care for their veggies and were completely skimped on steak chicken and rice. They no longer have shrimp for lunch anymore which is a huge bummer and overall for the price we paid it did not line up with the amount and quality of food we were given compared to a year ago. really disappointed

Chris J.

Yelp
The layout and vibe as soon I walked into the place was great. We were greated immediately and seated. The waitress was very attentive and took care of us immediately. We ordered steak and chicken hibachi lunch on top of Eel Roll and California Rolls. All food was fresh and tasted great. The cook was very nice and entertaining as he prepared the food in front of us. Definitely a great experience and recommend!

Yelp
love this place. great good and service Lunch prices are in range with other places. We've not had anything there we didn't like

Yelp
Made a 6:30 reservation to celebrate our 31st wedding anniversary. Arrived 5 mins early. KABUTA's was one of the first restaurants we went to when we got married. Drove 45 minutes to get there only to be told we had to wait 30 minutes or more longer or sit down with a chef who was already cooking (we had to know what we wanted immediately) because they seated walk-ins before us. HORRIBLE.

Connor Harper H.

Yelp
The server was extremely nice but we had to wait for almost 45 minutes just to get our food. I had came in with me and my 2 kids and we were sat down and ordered and then about 20 minutes into our wait a group of 2 showed up at the same table as us which isn't what bothered us but they ordered and then about 25 minutes later another couple showed up and sat us down which wasn't bothering us until they had made them order and we had to wait an additional 15 minutes until they even started cooking the food was mediocre and not to good I'm extremely disappointed in this place cause I have been here many times before and have had great service.

Yelp
We've now been to Kabuto's twice. The first time we were treated a a very fun show and good food. The chef was a lot of fun and a good cook. The second time, we were treated to good food but the chef didn't put in much of a show. Our meal was about $70 for the two of us including the tip . We didn't have alcohol.

Yelp
Yummy food. Service is almost always fast and friendly. It's a loud place, so don't go here on a first date.

Yelp
Went this weekend on Saturday night at about 7:45. There was a slight wait, but within 5-10 minutes we were sat at one of the grills. Server came by and took our drink orders and after delivering them got our food orders. There were still a few open seats at the grill, but they were sat within a few minutes of our sitting down. There was a definite language barrier between the server and the customers, and after several minutes their order was complete. I am not entirely sure that they were able to order exactly what they wanted, but the server did a fairly good job of trying to understand what they were saying. I have to admit that I had just as hard of a time trying to comprehend what they were saying, so cant fault the server at all. When the chef showed up, one of them had ordered the salmon hibachi. Unfortunately he decided to "joke" around with them and say that the salmon was raw and wouldnt be cooked. Even after it should have been apparent to him that they didnt understand, he continued to play "jokes" on the three of them. Another example would be taking raw chicken meat and dangling it over their plate of fried rice. From a food handling perspective, this is a horrible idea. Because of this, I have to dock a star. Otherwise he did a decent job of the "show" part of the experience which was nice (the other chef that we saw definitely did NOT want to be there, and despite cooking the food decently there was no showmanship at all). I ordered the steak hibachi, and my wife ordered the chicken hibachi. The portions were generous, but the flavor just wasnt that great. Compared to other japanese steakhouses that we had been to previously I enjoyed their flavor more. I also found this restaurant to just not be as clean as their competition. This is the reason for losing the second star. Overall I wouldn't go back. Other options in the area are better.

Yelp
Horrible place to be. I had bariatric surgery I have a card stating I can eat off the kids menu I asked for a kids chicken and rice no soup no salad the server REFUSED to serve me so I watched everyone else eat. Also my 4 yr old grand daughter dropped her nuggets on the floor asked for more and was told sorry that will cost you because kids drop their food all the time. I wasn't asking g for anything for free. Ordered egg roll which are NASTY I asked for a salad instead and told her they were nasty she said what so you mean. I said nasty and In gross she gave me a dirty look and I said taste nasty to me. She ROLLED HER EYES AGAIN AND WALKED AWAY. -

Yelp
Looks like they made some updates to waiting seating and flooring. However, still teenagers working the host table and not using practical seating practices for the hibachi side. Arrived at 1:20pm then proceeded to watch 3 separate parties of 3 people get seated in front of us. Got noodles for my kid who was hungry and left. Been going here for 20 years and this is the first time I was actually pretty frustrated. The lady that helped me just get noodles Togo was super helpful and friendly. Only reason I kept this at 3 stars.
google avatar

Miriam G.

Yelp
The service at this restaurant was horrible. We went to celebrate a family birthday and the hibachi chef was rude. I felt like he was shortchanging my sons plate and I let him know that he didn't have a kids meal. He physically stopped and stared us down. He also threw food/rice and onions around our table as he messily cooked. I checked the other table he cooked at after ours and he didn't do that there. When I told the manager she just gave my nephew a piece of cheese cake and told us to let the person know who sits us next time not to sit at his table. Horrible service and horrible experience. Buyer beware! Also -there was a mandatory 18% gratuity. So I had to pay to be treated like an animal in a pigsty.

Yelp
Very good food sushi is great Fun atmosphere with kid friendly staff Prices are reasonable for what you get very busy most nights but well worth the wait & money

Yelp
I used to love Kabuto, but it's really taken a turn recently. Last night, we had the worst service I've ever had at any restaurant. It took over three hours from when we walked in the door for us to get our food. There was a "45 minute" wait to get a table which ran a bit long. That's fine. The host doesn't control how long the chefs take or how quickly other guests eat, and the host was extremely apologetic with updates. We had the information we needed to make a decision, and we decided to stay. Then we were seated with two other parties. Our orders were taken immediately. We got our drinks, our soups and salads, and then we got abandoned. We sat and watched in bafflement as tables that had ordered after us had their food cooked and served before ours. Occasionally, a chef would push a cart near our table, and we would all perk up, thinking our turn had come, but it was not to be. While we were waiting, we got maybe three drink refills. For most of the time we were in the restaurant, we were sitting at our table with empty glasses, no chef, no food, and no explanation. It turns out one of the parties at our table had requested a specific chef. And the restaurant had decided to seat them with us and make us all wait without permission or an explanation. When the requested chef arrived, he seemed drunk. He was bleary and out of it. He burned himself twice before he even got the food on the hibachi. He spilled sauce everywhere. He overcooked everyone's food. If he could have cooked with both middle fingers in the air, I have no doubt he would have. As soon as the chef was finished (literally, the food had just hit our plates), our server brought everyone to-go boxes. It was closing time. Time to get the heck out, even though they had made us wait for so long. For this ordeal, one of the parties was given 10% off their meal. They were told that if they didn't want their food, they could leave it all and get a full refund. After waiting 3 hours, at 9:30 at night, when I'm certain they had neither the energy nor the patience to go somewhere else. We were given $10 off. It was not nearly sufficient. Also, this is a minor complaint, but why don't they have a cocktail menu to go with all the cocktail glasses hanging in the bar? It seems like that would be an easy money maker.
google avatar

Staci W.

Yelp
Kabuto is a typical hibachi restaurant. The taste is there. I had the chicken hibachi dinner. They are seating 8 to a table at the max it seemed as our party of four was seated with another party of four. The service was a little lackluster. The chef was nice. It was very busy today so the service was a little longer than other places.

Yelp
It had been a long time since I had been to Kabuto. I had tried the hibachi style dinner with a show from the chef. It was okay, but not amazing. This time, I decided to try the sushi side of the business for lunch. After parking in the spacious lot out front, this strip mall restaurant had the drapes closed which made me wonder if it was open. It didn't look inviting. I saw the open sign and decided to head on in. After passing through a couple of entrance doors, I was greeted by the hostess and after asking if I wanted hibachi or "other", she directed me to seat myself in an enclosed area with a drape across the entrance and half walls containing six 4-top tables. From there, the service was pretty good, though most folks were in the hibachi section, so I did go awhile between seeing any waitresses. Fortunately, they didn't forget about me as the lone diner in the sushi section. I ordered a hot green tea and though it tasted good, they left the leaves in the bottom of my cup. I thought I saw a couple floating pieces of tea leaf along the edge of my cup. It wasn't until I got near the bottom that I couldn't drink any more without getting a mouth full of chopped tea leaves. Why don't they use a strainer or poultice to contain the leaves? No refill was requested. I ordered a side salad which is mostly iceberg lettuce and a few shredded carrot strips topped with a ginger dressing. It tasted like it was peanut based so much that I had to ask if it had nuts, but was assured it was simply ginger based. I really didn't taste the ginger at all. And they salad was drenched in dressing which left a lot of it at the bottom of the salad bowl. Soon, by Salmon (Sake) Nigiri salmon and my Dragon Roll (avocado topped Eel Roll) arrived. The portions were large. The salmon was big enough that it required two bites for each of the pieces. It wasn't a chilled as some other places, but still at an acceptable temperature. Nice flavor with/without the low sodium soy. The Dragon Roll was a bit disappointing. It was technically correct, but lacked any of the artistic flair I see at other sushi restaurants that go the extra distance to make the roll worth the $11 charge. The meal was fine and the service was fine. It just seemed like there wasn't any life in the place or the food that made me want to return soon. Review #2660

Antionette M.

Yelp
Been there a few times and finally writing a review. This place is my go to for good Japanese food. Everything is amazing there honestly, I have no complaints at all really. Kabuto is a must try!

Yelp
We went in the middle of the week. They still do the table side cooking. They do wear masks and gloves. Unless you're with a bigger party they only sit four people per table now. The two of us were actually at a table by ourselves. Our waitress was very attentive and very timely with the delivery of everything. Our cook was very friendly, an interactive with us throughout the meal. The meal itself was wonderful. We did the filet mignon and chicken hibachi. The meat was cooked exactly as we asked, and was spiced and seasoned perfectly. I did notice as tables were leaving but they were wiping them down thoroughly. Ever wiping down the chairs, the table tops around the grill, and anything left on the countertop. Definitely not our first visit and certainly won't be our last.

Yelp
I have been eating here over 4 years! Never a dull moment! I love the atmosphere! Chefs are always entertaining and making jokes! Staff are very friendly. Food is made to perfection!
google avatar

Reese C.

Yelp
Kabutos is the best Japanese Steakhouse there is. It might not be the best restaurant for socially distancing, but nevertheless, masks ARE required. Now to the point. The food is the best food you will get at any restaurant EVER. Me and my siblings go there every year as our choice for our birthday's, if that tells you anything. Conclusively, visit this restaurant whenever time spares you. Best regards

Staci L.

Yelp
They are my go to place for sushi! They also have the hibachi grill, and if you go at lunch it's much more affordable. Even my kids like it here. I definitely recommend eating here.

Nikolaj C.

Yelp
Ordered from Grubhub months ago. Not only was my food tampered with. And I was screwed out of portions. But the driver left a hateful remark about my pets. Went full Karen got my refund reported the driver and canceled my Grubhub account then and there. Food security meant nothing to Kabutos and allowed easy access by a vengeful driver.

Blaine S.

Yelp
Kabuto used to be the best and now it is terrible. I don't know if it's under new management or they just don't care but the last two times we have been there the food has been horrible. 0 stars

Yelp
I went in for dinner and I asked the Hibachi cook for no mushrooms in my food. He then told me that I would have to catch the zucchini in my mouth if I didn't want any mushrooms. I didn't catch it so he put them in my food. He then continued to tell me to open my mouth 5 more times every time he made rice, steak, shrimp etc. I stopped talking to him because he was making me uncomfortable. He then stared at me for a good 10 seconds, and wouldn't stop. Not going back here. It was uncomfortable and I was not happy that i specifically asked for no mushrooms and he refused to take them out.

Ryan F.

Yelp
Just had dinner there tonight. Chef was awful and confused everyone's orders. The. When he put the seafood out my girlfriend and I could smell that something was bad. The steak smelled bad too and the chicken was very slimy. The chef kept asking us if the food was seasoned properly so he clearly didn't know what he was doing. IMO there are other hibachi style restaurants in close proximity that are much better. We won't be going back to this one.

Mackenzie J.

Yelp
Seriously really good! However I would love to order for delivery on Grubhub or doordash but they don't have the full menu on the apps. They are missing my favorite item (the crab Rangoon appetizer) and until that is added I will be ordering elsewhere. Please add it!!

Jillian D.

Yelp
They have very good fried rice! My favorite so far! All the staff is very friendly and helpful! The atmosphere is very nice and welcoming!

Yelp
Visited for lunch. We were seated right away! The service was rapid and the servers were prompt. The food wasn't as good as other hibachi places I've been to. This is my second time visiting Kabuto and I'll say it doesn't excite me as much as other hibachi places I've visited. Their sushi seems reasonably priced, next time I'll have to try ir to see if that's their wow factor! All in all, I recommend for a reasonably priced meal!
google avatar

Jackson H.

Yelp
I love Kabuto! This is by far my favorite hibachi place in town! I generally going on the weekends during lunch where the portions seem close to dinner and much cheaper. You cannot beat their lunch prices. The waitstaff is always very attentive and all the chefs have all been there awhile and make it a great experience. If you are looking for a good Japanese steakhouse on the south side of Indy look no further than Kabuto.
google avatar

Danielle H.

Yelp
We've been frequent flyers here for years. The restaurant itself isn't the most modern or up to date but the food makes up for it definitely. I love their prices compared to some of the more upscale options. I have never gone and been disappointed with the food. For lunch you get a lot of food and dinner, still more than I can eat. The sushi is good here as well.
google avatar

Erik Q.

Yelp
Kabuto! A favorite mainstay on the south side. Been here a long time and still cooking up the good stuff. This is a loud restaurant so be prepared to go here if you are a person sensitive to noise. They have a excellent selection of sushi and reasonably priced in my opinion. Service can be slow at times if you have to wait for a table. Peak times are Friday nights thru the weekend. Easier to get a table if you go during the weeknights instead. Food is good with offerings such as, Steak, Chicken, Filet Mignon, Lobster, Scallops, Two types of fish. Pretty consistent food as well, rarely will you have an issue with food as chefs are pretty in line with they way it should be cooked and presented. 5 out of 5 but beware, bathrooms here can be dirty at times.

Yelp
We went right when they opened (4p) on a Saturday. We were seated right away. There were 2 people on one side, 2 people on the other side, and then us on a another side. Essentially as "social distanced" as you can be at a hibachi restaurant. The serve came and took our orders, bringing drinks quickly. She brought out salad which was just a loaf of lettuce with a glob of ranch dressing in the middle. We were given soup as well, it didn't have much flavor to me. The gentleman comes out to make the food, and I'm not sure if he was distracted or what but rice was literally EVERYWHERE. I had to move my drink to the edge of the table to avoid the rice shower. I ordered the chicken and shrimp. Both were good, some pieces of chicken were cooked a bit too long. For the price; $45 for 2 meals both chicken & shrimp, 1 alcoholic beverage, and 2 waters, I think we got a lot of food. The restrooms were okay for cleanliness, not great since they'd been open less than an hour. Overall I would say you get a good amount of food for your money, the experience is average, next time I'll do takeout.

Megan A.

Yelp
This place used to be great but it took a turn. It's not the same as it used to be. The chef we had on Friday like the other reviews seemed "confused". He didn't even talk to us or greet us. The food was just "okay". I told my husband that we need to find another Hibachi which is unfortunate because this place used to be amazing!

Yelp
My girlfriend is obsessed with this place. OBSESSED. we seriously go at least twice a month... I know you're probably like that's not that much; BUT we live downtown and this is in Southport. Listen, it's 25 minutes and we drive past several amazing restaurants but she insists and I'm just along for the ride. The food is amazing, I won't lie. I always get the chicken and steak and the ball and chain orders the scallops. Everything has always been cooked perfectly... I give props to the grill, but the chefs do entertain while they cook. Service is kind of rude/short but I don't think they mean to be... just efficient. They are quick to turn their tables. You don't really get to sit around after your meal... they literally start cleaning the table around you until you get up. The restaurant needs some updating. It's pretty old and several of the chairs and booths show wear and tear on them. Look, I know my review sounds like this place is mediocre but the food is amazing. They could literally just serve me outside and I would still give them 4 stars. I refuse to let my girlfriend know this, but I do like going here... it's worth the 25 minute drive. CHEERS!

Claire G.

Yelp
I love this place. It's exactly what you would want from a typical hibachi place. The portions are huge and the lunch menu is an amazing price for the amount of food you get. Extra rice is only $2.50 and can essentially double your leftovers. They will make it custom to your preference (if you don't like one of the veggies they will make yours without). Their house ginger dressing is a favorite of mine too as well as the clear soup. Both are included with hibachi. Their sushi menu also has great options. The spicy crab, spicy tuna, and spicy salmon roll make for a great meal. As far as specialty rolls the playboy roll is the best. It's in a strip mall so this is definitely a place only locals know about, but I've recommended it to several friends!

Yelp
My friends and I have been coming here for years and we have always enjoyed the food even though the service is sub-par. After today, we will not be coming back. Everything took forever, which is the usual (which we tolerate because we like the sushi) however so many things were dirty. Our table had obviously not been cleaned in awhile, the soy sauce cups that were handed to us had rice and leftover soy sauce in them. To top it all off, while dipping my Salmon into the soy sauce, I pulled it out with a gnat attached to it. So gross, so done with this place.

Yelp
This country s by far the worst experience I have ever had at a Japanese steak house. The service was awful, and the waitresses made it feel like you were bothering them when you asked for something. We sat at the table for over an hour before the cook even came. They say fresh plates on the grill, almost like telling us it was to leave. When you pay this much money for dinner, you'd expect a little better service. I will not come back here, nor recommend it to anyone. I will happily drive to Plainfield from now on.

Yelp
We've enjoyed Kabuto's for over 26 years. Love the Greenwood roll and dynamite roll. Hibachi filet is always a winner too.

Yelp
Visited Indianapolis for a few days and decided to pop in to Kabutos. We had a party of 11 and snugly fit at one table. The service was a little slow, but they seemed pretty busy. Wife got shrimp and I got chicken and shrimp hibachi. What sets this place apart from similar hibachi grills, is their white sauce (yum yum sauce). There's something about the combination of it with their rice that is just simply excellent. Definitely a must-try if visiting Indy's south side.

Yelp
In the world of Japanese Steak Houses (a.k.a. a meal where you also see a volcano made of onions and pray the knives don't get away from the chef and kill you) this place is pretty average. The food was decent, hibachi chef talented, and the price was terrific. Beyond terrific, compared to normal JSH pricing. BUT the service was beyond terrible. They were SLOW. Slow greeting us at the door, slow getting our table arranged, slow taking the drink orders, and the wait for actual hibachi time was insane. They were either terribly inefficient of short-staffed. Our waitress, to top it off, was just rude. Or maybe not rude, but extremely short with us. Bad day perhaps. If not for the pricing, it would have gotten 2 stars or even 1. But the pricing and decent food pushed it into 3-star territory. We'll try it again to see if our experience was abnormal, and if it was I'll reconsider and think about adding a star.
