Kafe Kontrast  - Review - De Pijp - Amsterdam - The Infatuation

"Kafé Kontrast’s unique blend of Swedish and Indonesian food keeps things fresh with a frequently changing menu. At dinner, you may get mussels served on burrata and painted with sambal, or a schnitzel-ified version of a classic Indonesian fried chicken. But, if you only have time for one meal here, make it brunch. Get whatever smörrebröd they’re making for the season, a rice dish, and the mainstay kaya toast, served with poached eggs. Make a reservation early, as there can be waits during peak hours. If the weather’s nice, wait on the benches outside with an iced coffee inspired by Indonesian clove-laced cigarettes." - Paolo Española

Wow I really enjoyed Kafé Contrast. I went there back to back evenings because the menu was so intriguing and delicious. The first time I ordered the Gravalx with Sambal Matah and the Braised Short Rib with smoky beef jus and Javanese sambal- a fall of the bone slow cooked short rib, absolutely delicious. The second time I ordered the beef tartare with torch ginger aioli-the magic ingredient for me were the Rowan berries 🔝 and the meatballs with potato purée, a very homey dish 😋 I will definitely be back!!

what an incredible meal!! so glad that i managed to come here for a dinner - everything was absolutely phenomenal and this meal was so amazing it genuinely made me speechless. to start, i got the bread and butter, the butter was mixed with something (forgot what) but it tasted so fresh and light. the oyster mushroom (marinated in soy sauce, served with an almond puree, nuts, fried garlic, chilli) was the star of the show. my first bite left me shocked & immediately had to go back for more- the balance of flavour and texture was absolutely genius and i would fly back to amsterdam just for this dish. we also got the swedish meatballs which came with a beautifully seasoned & thick mashed potatoes, seasonal veggies, pickles, and lingonberries - all of which went so well together. swedish and indonesian fusion is something that i've never heard of before but the moment i started eating it immediately clicked and made so much sense. dessert is not to be skipped here: the mango rice pudding was fluffy and delightful to end the meal. all in all it was an incredible experience, the staff were friendly, service was quick and warm, i will definitely be recommending this place to any of my friends who travel to amsterdam.

We had the bread and pickles, tartares, and the meatballs — every single dish was a 10/10. Everything was delicious and perfectly prepared. The staff were super friendly and checked in often to make sure everything was great. Highly recommend!

This is a really great restaurant that we really recommend! I ordered the ‘Kontrast Experience’, dishes are delicious and very original, they are a very tasty combination between the Swedish and Indonesian kitchen. Good wine, warm and cozy ambience and very nice people!

We tried the Scandinavian plate and the KÖTTBULLAR. The Swedish meatballs paired w their sauce was very tasty! However the scandanavian dish was a pass for me. The salmon did not taste good and the fermented vegetables had a weird taste in my opinion. The bread, jam and sour cream were nice though. For sure try their Matcha!! Tasted amazing! I got it with a bit of sweetener. The space inside is also a bit cramped i would say, but outside space is nice.

We visited Amsterdam for my birthday weekend and this restaurant had such a lovely vibe with very friendly staff. The weather was beautiful so the doors were open wide. Candles were placed on the table for a romantic feel and the food was delicious! We ordered meatballs and they were so good! The only upsetting part for me was not ordering any garlic bread... I didn't realise until after we'd eaten but it looked amazing! Oh well, I'll just have to go back when I'm next in Amsterdam! 😂 Thank you for a lovely dining experience x

Delicious: butter toasted brioche with house made kaya coconut-pandan jam and two soft poached eggs for dipping on the side. Had it at 10am, am having an amazing day already :) Not a big fan of the small tables though but that is personal
