The Hottest New Restaurants in Queens, November 2024

"Go to Kafra’s for the pastries — and stay for the entrees. At this charming, sea blue-themed Colombian bakery in Jackson Heights, the daily lunch specials are generously portioned with rice, sweet plantains, soup, and salad included as complimentary sides. The centerpiece ranges from sancocho de res (a savory, beef stew) on Wednesday to grilled chicken accompanied by a warming pumpkin cream and apple soup on Friday. Colombian dinners and breakfasts — like the huevos en cacerola (baked eggs) with arepa and a choice of chorizo or morcilla — fill up the all-day menu. It satisfies sweet cravings, too, with pastries like the pastel de arequipe (caramel) and queso." - Caroline Shin, Eater Staff

I LOVED this place and the service we got! Walked in here because my friend recommended the Migado and my husband and I have been wanting to try this for the longest time. The lady taking my order was soooo friendly and she brought out my order as we sat down to wait. Explained to us what she was doing and what the migado contained. Also a dedito and Colombian soda which pairs really well. Definitely one of the best deditos I’ve ever had - hands down. Migado is also interesting - cheese and hot coco doesn’t sound so good but give it a try and you may love it! I love that they also offer other foods so it’s not just dessert but it is a tiny establishment so it may be better for small groups. Definitely returning!! Note - idk why the menu says the migado is $10 but our total came to $19 with tip..

Very nice place to go. I ordered the Salmon with Salad and it is delicious. Very cheek place and esthetically clean. The waitresses are very attentive and polite. Will recommend and I'll come back and visit. Lots of Colombian breads and coffees. They also offer food in the go so order ahead.

I visited your restaurant on a Monday and ordered a soup. There was a misunderstanding, and the server brought a plate I never ordered. When I explained I only asked for soup, she came back twice trying to make me have it ! told me I’d caused her to have to pay for it, which made me feel blamed and uncomfortable. I ended up paying for it ! I’m not looking for anything in return, but I hope staff can be reminded that respectful communication matters.

I work near Kafra’s and get my coffee from here sometimes along with a pastel de pollo or whatever baked good I feel like on the day. Recently I decided to come in with some friends from work and the server was super helpful and offered us the special they have in the evenings. Diana was a great server and the food was great as well. We had a couple of burgers and bought some fresh bread to take home. Thank you Diana!!

We had their lunch special soups, the cream of asparagus I highly recommend! They brought complimentary dulce de Leche baked goods to start that were delicious, we had the sweet plantains with guayaba and cheese as an appetizer which was very tastey. The green salad with chicken was an enormous portion, the chicken was perfectly cooked. The dressing is a cilantro green sauce that is incredible. This is a new business as of 12/2023, and the food is 1st rate, they are working on the timing and service management so cut them some slack! The tables are all 2 tops, the area is narrow, I would not plan on going here with more than 4 people, and I would not bring my toddler children here. But I loved it for an adult lunch out with my sister!

The food never fails to amaze me. Everything is delicious. Their salad is one of the best salads I’ve had. The arroz paisa!! The maizitos kafras!! And last but certainly not least their MIGADO KAFRAS!! Omggggg!! And our waitress Diana Ramirez is the best. I always get her every time I come here and she’s always amazing.

Google
Great bakery and coffee shop. Didn't have their lunch menu but the food others ordered looked great. The staff is very friendly and even gave us sizable samples of freshly baked ham and cheese croissants which were fantastic . Would definitely return for the baked goods and coffee and to try their lunch menu.

Good food for breakfast, from a big menu, but somewhat dry. Bakery items looked great though and seemed to be the reason why the place was busy.

Yelp
I've been here once for the plantain soup and they were sold out. The owner said that they usually sell out by three pm but if I want to get some after three pm to call and ask them to save me some. Well, I ordered their grilled chicken instead and it was very chewy and not as good as other places on Northern Blvd. The ambiance was loud playing EDM and a bright interior. Not bad for those who want to feel young again. The bakery section was nicely displaying bakery type foods and they have a full menu to order from as well as many kinds of coffee and fruit drinks (also meh - better can be found on Roosevelt Ave). I called back today 04/05/2024 and the lady who answered asked me to hold a minute in Spanish. She put the phone on the counter and forgot about me. The phone is no ordinary phone either. If they still have it on the counter then the automatic message prompt will come up after you hang up and try calling back. 1 star for this nonsense. She handled five customers at the counter with the manager helping out but no one could take my call. I hung up after 5min on hold and tried calling back only to hear that they don't have their voicemail set up so you can't even leave a message. And now after 20min their mailbox is still not currently accepting messages and they still have the phone on, on hold, on the counter, unanswered. That is extremely rude and unacceptable. The soup isn't worth it at this point. They're nice to your face but when you're physically not there it's the opposite. Happy eats!

Yelp
It's super cute and very clean! There is a teal theme inside the cafe. They have breakfast and lunch options! There's seating but not much like maybe 3 tables and counter, so it is cozy. I liked the waitress and counter service. The lady who helped me order was super friendly! I felt at home here. I ordered pan de bono, empanada de cambray, and pastel de pollo, and all of these items were heavenly. How would I describe pan de bono? It's like soft cheesy bread with a thin crust on the outside, and I could tell it was made recently. There are many baked good available from croissants to empanadas and small bites. I saw the menu which is seen in my photographs if you have a chance to take a peek has meat options. Hay arroz, frijoles, bistec, pollo, cerdo, y otros opciones. There is rice, beans, steak, chicken, pork, and other filling choices. Tienen tortas, pasteles, y ensaladas tambien. They have sandwiches, cakes, and salads too. I liked the ambience and the vibe inside, so I would return again. Why you ask? Because I want to come back and try each item! I highly recommend visiting if you are in the area!

Yelp
I passed by this place and wanted to try, as it's new. The service was friendly, the ambience was nice. The pan de bono was delicious. I got another sweet, that wasn't great, but pretty good. Nice prices. The cappuccino was burning hot, had to wait about a half hour for it to cool. Im giving 4 stars as it's a new business, and giving benefit of the doubt. Please learn to not scald the milk! Overall, I'd try again and order an iced drink, and maybe another pastry- less sweet one.

Yelp
I had a terrible experience here yesterday. I came for lunch on a Friday afternoon. When the server gave us the menu, I noticed that the right page had the prices whiten out. They were unreadable. I asked the server how much are the lunch items, and she said that "prices go up and down but it depends." The person I was with ordered fish soup, which by itself is $9.50. I made the mistake of assuming that it was in a similar price range. To my surprise, when they brought us the bill, it was $25 for a Bandeja Kafra! I immediately rushed to the server and asked her why she didn't tell me the price. She tried to defend herself and make excuses. I then had to speak to the owner and explain to him what happened. He agreed the server made a mistake and offered to make me a 25% discount. Although the price is nicely decorated, don't go here for lunch. Stick to the Colombian pastries and bakery. Don't let them fool you.

Yelp
Wanted to try this place as it is fairly new in the area. We ordered "crema de espárragos" "asparagus soup" Creamy soup, but found it plain- They give you small guava pastries as a starters (free) but I found them hard and a bit burnt. The salad and the dressing were good. The place is Not big enough and it is a bit uncomfortable unless you are sitting by the window. The waitress was amazing very helpful and sweet and attentive.

Yelp
I've been a customer since they opened up however today may be the last time. For those who frequent this bakery, you know it's a small space. We usually order to go. Today however decided to drink our cappuccino at the table. I went to the cashier to close out my bill, pretty much like a seem less act. After walking out the waitress abruptly held my arm and stated "chicos you didn't pay". This was embarrassing to say the least. I told her I had paid the cashier and she apologized. Still the experience left a very bad taste in my mouth. In a neighborhood full of bakeries they should really rethink how to approach loyal customers.

Yelp
Kafras has become my new obsession. Every single item on their menu is amazing - their breads and coffee are the most amazing pair and so perfect to stop by for breakfast on weekends. The service is kind, knowledgable, and attentive. They provide so many great recommendations. This has become my new staple. They do have plenty of seating and I always find a place to sit when I go. They have a bar sort of area as well as general seating.
