I think this was my fave poke of the trip - it's just a supermarket, and you buy it by weight! We got it on the way to North Shore

I cannot describe how much of a disservice you are doing to yourself if you pass by the superette on your trip to Oahu and don’t get yourself a bowl of poke and an ice cold beverage (get a coke or a POG Hawaiian sun can). My favorite meal in the world comes from this hole in the wall. Walk/drive to the water and eat there and it’ll hit even harder. 1000/10

Google
So good! The best poke I’ve ever had? Maybe, at least top 3. The spicy style has some actual spice, and is creamy. We always come here when we visit Oahu.

A friend recommended that we stop for this grocery store poke when we were in Oahu. It was right next to another stop we were making at the shrimp truck so it's easy to combine. When we were there, they only had two options. We went with the Shoyu Poke Bowl. I typically prefer my poke a little saucier, but this was pretty good. The rice was warm and perfectly sticky so no complaints there. I'd get poke here and then take it over to the shrimp truck for the perfect lunch.

Went for the poke and snacks. A little suspect of the spicy tuna because it looked like cat food. But dayum I was wrong. Best poke we have had, ever. Shoyu poke didn’t have too many onions and the tuna chunks were perfect little rubies of fresh and intense flavor. Top seaweed chips or shrimp chips with poke for the ultimate snackie.

We have had poke all over Oahu this past week. This was okay if not a bit dry, it needed a little more shoyu or other flavor. Service was nice.

Do your own math with your groceries. One of the aunties with a bad attitude tries to rip people off daily. Over charging everybody so she can pocket 60 bucks at the end of her shift

I stopped buying poke here a couple years ago, because there was a hair in my poke bowl. My brother wanted to eat here earlier today, so I got a tako poke bowl thinking it must be better than it was before. When we got to our next destination and I started eating my poke bowl, I noticed there were 2 strands of hair in my poke bowl. I am definitely not eating here again. I would give no stars at all if Google gave me the option.

I don't know why this place has such good reviews. We were in the North Shore area one Sunday, so we stopped by just after 1 to pick up some poke. There is a half pound minimum if you're just getting the poke so we got 1/2 lb of the shoyu, and 1/2 lb of the spicy. The shoyu was a mix of old and new pieces of tuna because half of the pieces were discolored and you could tell have been marinated longer. The spicy poke wasn't even chunks of fish. It was all the leftover end pieces so it was basically tiny morsels of fish. And it wasn't exactly cheap, at $18.99 a pound - especially for fish that isn't fresh. Do yourself a favor and go to Foodland for poke instead. It's half the price and the poke is actually fresh there.

Yelp
Poke. Mediocre at best. Steer clear. Definitely not like how it used to be! Poke tasted old and was just overall disappointing. Sad.

Yelp
I was in the area and decided to pick up poke from Kahuku Superette. It was pretty early in the morning at around 8, and our poke was made FRESH. We ordered the limu and shoyu. She had the fish chopped up but added the seasoning when we ordered. I don't know if this is always the case or if it was just because we were there early. The fish was super fresh and the toppings were really good. I loved the crunchiness of the limu, and it was extra good because it wasn't sitting for very long. The lady working the poke counter was super friendly and helpful. I would definitely come back here to grab poke!

Yelp
Got the shoyu (not pictured) and spicy ahi. Both were awesome. I like the slight spice to the shoyu as well. Prices seemed reasonable. Store was a bit dingy and flies were flying around the poke area but still good food.

Yelp
It's been here for a long time! Before all the other food truck places were around Giovanni's I used to stop by here grab some drinks and poke before getting a garlic shrimp plate. There's a sign in front - they famous for their shoyu poke. The lady serving the poke in the back has been here for a long time too. Auntie is nice. Can be a bit aggressive but shes sweet. they got snacks drinks and all kine. Poke is OK it's not the freshest. But still good. The convenience of having this here is great.

Yelp
Went there based on the recommendations on Yelp. The signs are promoting the poke. I was excited for a delicious, fresh poke. I always compared the spicy ahi, so I had to try. The worker was friendly, but the fish was not appealing at all. The taste of spicy ahi missed the flavors in the traditional recipe I have ate numerous times. What a waste of money. Only at a few bites of the fish. I was a little afraid of being sick.

Yelp
The ahi tuna poke had a weird texture to it. It wasn't buttery smooth like other pokes we've had. It reminded me of basic poke from San Jose, CA. The tako was chewy and lacked flavor. It tasted like it was marinated with sesame oil and nothing else- not even salt. We were disappointed because we heard great things about this place! Maybe it was just a bad day when we went.

Yelp
This store has been in my life forever. Only as an adult have I come to truly appreciate what this store has to offer. Bigger stores are about a 10min drive. If I don't have time, this is my spot. They have everything you need pretty much. Also, they have some awesome shoyupoke.

Yelp
First time trying this place being from the mainland, to say it lives up to the height is an understatement. Fresher, cleanest, poki, or fish I've ever had in general. The spicy poki was my favorite. The head chef was wonderful and extremely helpful. Highly recommend anyone looking to try in Oahu Hawaii.

Yelp
This unassuming convenience store serves a very good poke. Two sizes: large and small. Trust me, the small is plenty for lunch and probably even dinner. Once you choose your size at the nondescript counter, she fills half the bowl with sticky rice and then the other half with whatever you want. We actually chose ahi tuna plus shoyu tuna. Interestingly the warm rice actually cooks some of the fresh fish which we chose to take home with us. The woman serving was very helpful and congratulated us on also choosing seaweed salad to accompany our poke bowls. As I said in the opening sentence, this place is just a convenience store that happens to serve a very tasty poke bowl. From the outside this place is nondescript. Don't be fooled by the exterior. If you want good poke, this is as good a place as any to get it.

Yelp
They have a lot of variety of poke. I got shoyu and it wasn't my favorite. I like shoyu but I didn't like the taste of it.

Yelp
Sadly this will be my 1st bad review on yelp. I was excited to eat the poke bowl from Kahuku Superette. I tried it a few years ago and I remember it being Ono! But it's not so Ono anymore. The Poke was absolute trash! I've lived on this earth for 39 years and I can honestly say that was the worse poke I had in my life. I'm born and raised on Oahu and I just want to apologize to those he ate this before me. I paid almost $30 for old fish. I ordered a poke bowl, half spicy half shoyu. First of all, Who messes up spicy ahi?? They make the spicy mayo sauce already premade! No taste, no nothing. And the shoyu poke tasted like it was marinated in shoyu for days!! Highly disappointed! I'm not sure what happened to this place but I remember the poke being good. I ended up throwing it away

Yelp
Before writing this review, I checked to see if anyone else had the same issue. And I found that there are others who share the same issue. But I am writing this review on behalf of friends that don't have a Yelp account and wanted others to know their experience. They've been coming here their whole life, and so they're very disappointed. Apparently, the only thing consistent was the rude staff. They got their most famous poke, the shoyu poke. There's also now a minimum $20 for a poke bowl. They bought a $34 worth of "fresh" poke but only to find out that it's mixed with old and new poke. The texture of some poke pieces were hard and the others were mushy and very dark colour. Good thing they didn't get food poisoning, but their SIL has gotten food poisoning from here.

Yelp
The poke bowl was pretty good. I don't think it tasted as fresh as Foodland poke, though. The flavor was good and the portion was massive! Definitely enough to feed two people.

Yelp
Any trip home from the north shore is way too sad without a little treat, so a quick stop at Kahuku Superette was definitely necessary. I wanted to share with my husband, so although the spicy ahi looked creamy and rich, I chose the ahi limu poke with medium sized rice, and drizzled it with some shoyu. It was fresh and perfectly portioned to share without feeling too full of fresh fish. The best bonus was seeing a six pack apple cider for only $4! I regretted not grabbing more when I realized how yummy they were, but I guess we'll just have to make another trip soon!

Yelp
Really fresh poke that is in a small convenience store in the side of the road. Really close to the famous Giovanni shrimp truck. The woman that helped me was super helpful and they had many varieties. I ordered the shoyu ahi poke which I really enjoyed more then the spicy salmon. I ordered a small which they piled alot of fish and it was good enough to feed two people.

Yelp
I have been an Oahu resident since 1970. I currently live near Kahuku Superette, I have never in my life experienced such godawful customer service in my life. I kindly asked a cashier where the Half and Half was as I needed it for my coffee. This employee barely looked up from her reading material and told me she had no idea what I was talking about. She was quite rude and curt and directed me to another cashier. I was shocked by her dismissive manner. This 2nd cashier informed me that their delivery had not arrived yet. I have no earthly idea how this establishment stays in business with its poor work ethics. I asked this nasty woman for her name and she actually said, no! Then she mumbled something that sounded something like Becky. Why is someone in a grocery store so oblivious as to what is sold in its own store? Unbelievable! I have worked in the food and beverage industry most of my life and have never seen such abominable public relations. I was treated as if I was bothering this woman by merely asking a question. I hear the Poke is better at Laie Foodland.

Yelp
My family and I went Kahuku Superette on 3/11/24 and ordered shoyu ahi poke and spicy ahi tuna poke. I was excited and was looking forward to eat their poke. However I was absolutely disappointed. Their poke was amazing a year ago but this time it was the worst tasting poke. (Maybe went on a bad day). Let me start with the shoyu ahi poke. It is tombo ahi (lower grade ahi) and I swear it was a few days old. I tried it and I was disgusted. Gave the poke another chance by giving it another try but was it was just awful! I gave some to my 13 year old nephew (who eats anything). He tasted it and looked at me with the "evil eye". The spicy ahi tuna poke tasted very similar. The ahi tuna poke was a combination of tombo ahi pieces with canned tuna. I gave some to my sister and was also disgusted on the first bite of the ahi shoyu poke and ahi tuna poke. Luckily I bought only 1 lb of each. I threw the rest away. Thinking of getting a refund but I didn't want the nice cashiers listening to my complaints. I understand that the prices of products has gone up in Hawaii and the rest of the world, in this case ($18.99/lb) for their poke. But if you are serving this kind of product and thinking no one will comment then I will post a review and will warn others. Beware and stay away from this place. There are many other spots that are better tasting with quality.

Yelp
Supposedly the original poke on the island and a favorite with locals but when we visited, the fish didn't look as fresh as some of the other places and tasted just ok. However it is close to Sunset Beach and other famous Beaches of north shore so you can grab some poke for a sunset picnic!

Raistlin R.

Yelp
If this place is the best spot for poke bowls, I'm guessing it's for local standards and that can vary from person to person. The poke bowl I purchased was with spicy ahi and when I tried it, I didn't really catch a spicy kick from it. The color of the fish and the sauce was also greying which gave me an indication that it was getting old. Poke bowls served at foodland, Times supermarket, or even if you order sashimi from restaurants, the fish will always have their full color, showing that it's fresh. Greying meats should be thrown out. Anyways, Not even after 30 min of eating a quarter of the bowl, my digestive system started churning hard as if it was digesting something toxic; felt like I had food poisoning. If they see this, I hope they fix this before someone files a lawsuit for serving food that can potentially harm and kill people.

Yelp
The BEST poke, we come here every vacation...just painted the building and newly paved parking lot...excellent and friendly customer service, very helpful and patient with our indecision

Yelp
Delicious, super fresh poke. Lia is incredible and makes all of the local grindz herself. She shows pride in her recipes, which is awesome. Although it's a bit of a drive and the exterior of the building isn't too enticing, it's totally worth trying. They are known for their shoyu ahi poke which was the best, but following close behind was the cucumber kimchee!! So ono!

Yelp
I've been here for two different purposes. The first was a Sunday afternoon after flying in and trying to find groceries. While this place has plenty of food, wouldn't recommend shopping here with a laundry list of items. Grocery items are a little pricey, they don't have bags, and honestly it's pretty much has whatever you'd see at a gas station mini mart. That being said, it was the only grocery store in miles that was open on Sunday and we were very happy about that! Second was for their poke! The reviews RAVED about the poke and many of our friends pointed us here. The poke comes pre-packaged or customized. We ordered the Shoyu Poke bowl (apparently their main/most popular poke). We got it with rice (I'd highly recommend that but heads up it's ~$1.50 more) and took it over to the tables by the food trucks to eat. It was good! I'm not HUGE on poke, but it tasted yummy and had a little kick which I really enjoyed. This is kinda odd, but I liked the smaller sliced poke vs the bigger/thicker pieces. I'll be the first to admit that I'm not the poke expert, but I can see why this is top rated!
google avatar

Vivi L.

Yelp
Kahuku Superette touts that their shoyu ahi is "famous and special" so we had to try it out! They're a relatively small market with their poke counter in the back right corner. Their poke bowls are deliberately served with their rice diagonal so you can get poke and rice in EVERY bite. I love their foresight!! Their rice is also served hot, which I loved, but I know others aren't fans of their poke warming up. *** There definitely IS something different about their shoyu sauce, but I couldn't put my finger on it! There's some bite due to chili flakes and I tasted hints of citrus maybe? A deeper feeling of umami..maybe black bean sauce? Whatever it is, it's GOOOOD.
google avatar

Andy L.

Yelp
Other reviews are correct. Super shady! Bought a poke bowl from them today. They put the rice in and then the fish, then they weighed it. $17 for a small poke bowl with rice. Then I took it to the cashier and they added another $2 bucks on top. I asked them what that was for, and the girl at the cashier said it's for the rice. Ok. First, they charge their poke by weight of fish, not fish + rice. So that's problem #1. Then they charged me again on the overpriced rice? That's problem number 2. I will go to Foodland next time.
google avatar

Yelp
There are so many poke options which Kahuku is one that you should try. It is located in a convenience store past the cashier. There were several packaged food items as well as someone mixing the poke in the back. Ordering was pretty quick given that we were the only one in the store midmorning. I like the spicy tuna and octopus. Although the food did not look like much in the containers, it was quite a lot especially if you eat it with rice. Food price was on par with other poke place near by. I'll be back in the future!

Jocelyne G.

Yelp
Apparently my partner learned about this spot through YouTube and he finally got to visit! Has a very "homey" feeling to it. My partner ordered a Poke Bowl and said it was a 10/10 for him. I personally don't eat Poke, but I did try it and it was yummy. The lady who assisted as was super friendly and engaged in conversation with us.

Yelp
This place is trash. Straight garbage. Kahuku Superette use to be good. Not any more. I'm a born and raised local and very disappointed in their poke. They label their poke as "famous", I guess it's famous for having the islands shittiest poke ever. It's overrated, overpriced crap. Plus they are shady AF over charged me by $10.
google avatar

Yelp
No Aloha vibes. Think... "Deliverance"... I was imagining dueling ukuleles. From the moment I walked into this quaint country store, I entered with the intent to support a small family business. That went South quickly. I did sense something was way off when the Auntie at the poke counter added rice first, then the poke, and then weighed it?! Isn't it more fair and accurate to add the rice separately or add it after the poke is weighed? The sign there states this but it doesn't appear to be the case. The other reviews stated this was frozen fish. I wouldn't know the difference. The spicy version was actually good, therefore, two stars and not one star. Anyway, I'm ticked that the cashier who acted shady to begin with asked me if I wanted my receipt after ringing me up. Of course I did. When I did the math, I saw that I was overcharged $4 extra. For what? ! With the Deliverance reference, I didn't bother going back in for a refund. Will not come back and don't recommend.

Yelp
This spot is known for their shoyu ahi poke and for a good reason. I came here for the first time and noticed that their poke bowls were over $20, so I just decided to get half a pound of poke by itself. I figured that the rice was not worth paying for. The market sells a good variety of snacks and drinks, and the ladies working were all very nice. The poke was tasty, and I would recommend grabbing some if you are on North Shore.

Yelp
Kahuku Super, it's been some years now since we visited and you are just as I remember. Nothing glamorous but they have everything you might need. My old job had me driving out there at least once a week, now it's a family excursion. Their poké "bowl" is nothing like you'll find anywhere else. It's a 2 pound plastic container with rice smartly packed on a diagonal and poké to fill so that you can get rice and fish in every chopstick bite! We got 2 pounds of their famous shoyu poké for the fights today, Auntie mixed a fresh batch. We'll make rice at home

Yelp
3.5 STARS My girlfriend wanted to grab some poke, so we stopped by Kahuku Superette since she had read good things about them. We stopped by on Monday, March 4th around 1pm. *Lomi Salmon ($9.99/lb) *Spicy Poke ($17.99/lb) *Limu Poke ($15.99/lb) *Shoyu Poke ($14.99/lb) *Tako Poke ($17.99/lb) *Cucumber Kimchee ($8.99/lb) *Cabbage Kimchee ($8.99/lb) We got about a third of a pound each of the items listed above. I thought the poke and kimchi were okay. I liked the traditional limu poke the best as it let the fish shine through. The tako was also good. Tender with a nice chew. I wasn't a fan of the spicy poke as it just had a super slimy texture. So the best thing about this shop? The roommate found super cheap red bull. Yes, he's a red bull addict and was happy he found it at a low price. Weird fact, but also very true. I was gonna give them three stars just for the poke, but factoring in the red bull pricing, I'm giving them 3.5 rounded up to four.

Yelp
Stopped by here for some poke! Prices were reasonable! Flavors were good! We got their shoyu ahi poke but their poke is previously frozen and not fresh. Overall still not bad though!

Yelp
We happened to stop by here because the shrimp we got from a local restaurant was not good enough. This place saved the day. The spicy tuna sauce was really good. We ordered this on top of the rice and it was great. It wasn't as fresh as some of the other places we had though! Good, but not the best. But still great.

Yelp
My job takes me to the Kahuku area once a week. I always pass this local store right across the high school. I caught wind of a rumor that this little store makes what may be one of the best shoyu poke on the island. Well then. I guess I have to try then! It was a slow day for me, with very little stops so I was in no particular reason to rush to the next stop. Perfect. I'll try their poke bowl. The poke section can be seen as soon as you walk in through the door. I marched right up and ordered their famous shoyu poke. It's sold by weight, so the rice is put in the bowl and placed on the scale. Poke is added and weighed again to get the net weight. My bowl came out to $15. Not cheap.... This better be good! AND GOOD IT IS!! The hype is real! There's a slight "bite" from the chili pepper, but not spicy enough to make it unpleasant. (I don't particularly care for spicy food.) There's a special "something" I taste that I've never tasted in other shoyu poke before... Maybe black bean sauce? Whatever it is, it takes it over the top! In my mind, this poke IS one of the best shoyu poke on the island! It lives up to the hype. If you've heard the rumors about this little store serving really good poke, BELIEVE IT. If you're in the neighborhood, it's worth a stop.

Yelp
Go for the poke. Go for the poke. Go for the poke. Best kept secret on island. That's what I tell my friends. Poke poke poke. And since pandemic I thing they help you out a little more.

Yelp
First review of 2019 The parking area has choke pot holes while the outside looks run down and closed but it's totally worth stopping by for. This place is really organized, spacious and clean inside. Thanks to Darrell P, I got this place on my radar. They have a little bit of everything for a superette but I was only there to try their famous Shoyu Poke. I navigated myself to the back and didn't see any poke. A little disappointed because I'm not in Kahuku that often. This lady was doing something in the back and didn't acknowledge me when I approached. After she finished, she brought a fresh tray of Shoyu Poke out! Lucky me! She immediately scooped up some of their delicious poke and I went to the cashier to pay. Since I was here picking up a snack while waiting for some Kahuku shrimp, I drove back to Romy's to share with my in-laws. It would be their first time trying poke. Only my brother in-law tried it but he liked it and ate several pieces. The ahi was so fresh and melted in our mouths. The sauce wasn't salty, spicy or sweet. It was just right. I highly recommend anyone in the area to pop by and give them a try.
google avatar

Yelp
Never have I ever been in to kahuku superette until today... been seen a lot of reviews and post about there FAMOUS POKE, and I'm all about poke so I when samps um today! Buggah was fresh and melt in your mouth! Wanted to try the opae to but was all out, maybe next time!

Ian N.

Yelp
A very disappointing poke bowl made with cheap ingredients, such as canned tuna, supplementing ground ahi. In addition to being expensive, the poke counter lady stuffs the containers, absurdly full while charging $25 a pound for poke. I would recommend checking out RY's poke shack down the road which is one of the best Poké bowls I've ever had in the State Of Hawaii.
google avatar

Ray K.

Yelp
Food was amazing, staff was really friendly. I brought my almost two year old daughter and she loved the food!

Jennica J.

Yelp
We've never had Poke before and read about this place! We decided that Poke is not for us, but if you like it, the portions are huge! It was expensive because they price is by pound and the large bowl fits almost a pound and a half! The lady at the counter was friendly and gave us recommendations on what to order. I would agree with others, one bowl can easily feed 2 people. Based on other reviews it sounds like there are other good poke bowl options that would be less expensive if you are just trying it for the first time! (Another positive- they sell alcohol, the closest Foodland does not).
google avatar

Sadie D.

Yelp
You are going to drive by this place, think, "you want me to get a bunch of raw, ready-to-eat fish from this podunk little run-down supermarket?" And the answer is YES! Listen to the woman behind the counter, and altho it may seem like she is upselling you, she definitely knows flavor profiles and will give you all the tools to construct the perfect poke bowl. There are other poke places we loved around the island, so if you're looking for more of a prepared dish, this is not the place. But if you're willing to put together a bowl yourself, definitely make the stop.

Yelp
Best poke of the trip has to go to Kahuku Superette. I wasn't able to make it to a lot of different poke places in Hawaii, but I'm really happy I stumbled upon this one. Located out in the small town of Kahuku, somewhat near Turtle Bear on the North part of Oahu, this place is definitely worth a stop. Kahuku Superette is really more of a grocery store than a poke restaurant, but don't let that fool you. While you're out doing your beer run and grabbing some snacks, you might as well kill two birds with one stone and try some of the best poke the island has to offer. I tried both the shoyu tuna poke and limu tuna poke, and both were incredibly fresh and delicious. I particularly liked the limu, but the shoyu was also on point. Prices here are reasonable, especially for the quality. Tuna poke doesn't get much fresher and tastier than this. Aside from poke, they have a pretty decent beer and hard alcohol selection. Service was great, and the location is right by a bus stop, making it pretty convenient to visit. If you're staying at Turtle Bay Resort, or another resort near by, definitely make this a priority. It will not disappoint.

Yelp
When I come out to Laie/Kahuku side I'm always looking for poke! When we were driving by I seen Kahuku Superette and heard they had some good poke so I gave it a try! Wow, didn't realize Inside was big with lots of things! I did go straight to the poke section. I've heard their shoyu poke was good but had to try my favorite Limu Poke and I'm SO glad I did! The portion was super good too! Maybe I'll try shoyu next time! I'm glad I found this place! Now I can have my poke fix on this side!

OK guys. First off I would get my grindz here first before ever going down the street to the tourist trap shrimp trucks and roadsides. Met the owner making food in the back. She reminded me of my grandma, who made all the same stuff so I know Flava when I taste home made. All the fresh poke and food is home made. Buuuut... cabbage kimchi way too salty and not sure if it was salt or MSG so can't recommend. Cucumber kimchi crunchy and fresh with decent spicy bite, but I've had better flavor from Korean markets. Still it was a better side to the poke than the cabbage. Taegu was chewy but again slightly too salty. And then the poke bowl. So rice is rice and impossible to not to get right so need to say anything about that. The ahi shoyu poke here is all about the quantity. The chunks are decent cut, not a lot of fatty stringy pieces. Solid but the flavor again isn't mind blowing, about what you'd get from Foodland or market style poke or even making it yourself. So just trying to keep it real. However all this said I'd still get my meal here when on this side of the island and love supporting local Ohanas because the pandemic's toll sucks. The food is good here because the owner makes it with aloha, not because foodies say so.

Yelp
Went here because it was rated fairly high on yelp and it was getting late on the north shore. But, do not go - the fish texture was frozen and it was a total rip off. The lady at the counter tried to be overly kind t me. I got a "small" poke and it was $20. I had no idea the cost until I went up to the counter, then thought it was a good size portion so might be worth the price. Then when I went to eat it, it tasted terrible and was worried about food poisoning so I tossed it. Also got the $7 seaweed salad and it was terrible - the taste was off.

Yelp
After what i thought was ordinary small talk pertaining only to the food i was interested in purchasing, the lady behind the counter proceeds to tell me she is kanaka maoli and that they invented the poke bowl. She made suggestions, i grabbed my food and she kindly thanked me. As i was walking away she mumbles "now beat it, and get outta hea..".... Pure aloha. I have hawaiian blood but i dont feel the need to to be a prick to everyone perceived as a "haole", or even just someone not from this side of the island, especially if those people are helping to keep my business moving. On the other hand, their poke flavors were probably the most tasteless, uneventful, varieties ive ever had. The new menu item she says everyone loves is the honey taegu dried ahi or aku (not sure which), but it just tasted like spoiled taegu. Im under the impression that this place was once a simplistic, charming, mom and pop pillar in the community that over time has been desecrated by poor management and bitter attitudes.
