How Sheila Adams Opened Kai-Simone Winery in Spring Branch, Texas | Eater Austin

"Set on three lush, picturesque acres in Spring Branch—what Sheila Adams describes as the gateway to the Hill Country—I founded Kai-Simone Winery after years of research and touring more than 40 wineries; we opened in fall 2019. As a Black-owned winery, we aim to diversify Texas wine and encourage BIPOC participation while focusing on quality over quantity: our plan is to carry 10–12 wines annually and produce four to eight at pace, and over the past year we made eight wines, blended two, and are aging three reds in barrels. I work as a novice winemaker using our cellar equipment and relied on consultant Tom Payette to ensure the building and cellar suit our winemaking processes. We use both California and Texas grapes—California fruit for availability and cost-effectiveness, Texas for terroir when possible—and purchase directly from Georgetown Winery (90 miles away). Our current lineup includes a sauvignon blanc, viognier, and an oaked chardonnay; the Pink Sky rosé, which has sold out five times since 2019; Texas reds such as merlot, sangiovese, cabernet sauvignon, and petite sirah; the Red Melange blend (50% California and 50% Texas grapes, half malbec and half cabernet sauvignon); the Cherise Blossom sparkling fruit wine made with blackberries and red cherries; and the Cocoberry Kiss port, a rich, bold proprietary blend created with Georgetown Winery that uses a premium red base aged three to five years before infusion with dark chocolate and strawberries and is released around Valentine’s Day (usually selling out by June). The tasting room is open weekend daytime only as we slowly build the brand; we weathered pandemic closures and the February 2021 freeze by tapping personal funds, reopened the tasting room in June 2020 and were approved to operate as a restaurant with expanded food service using our on-site prep kitchen and small food truck, and we also host public and private events—concerts, movie screenings, yoga, tastings, painting sessions, and specialty markets—and maintain three wine clubs with more than 100 members." - Gabrielle Pharms

Visited here December 21 on a date and was super bummed that there wasn’t any Christmas decorations, lights or music here. Venue isn’t that great. Not much to see and no fire going on the fire pit. The wines weren’t anything to marvel about either.- they didn’t even have a description on the menu so you had no idea what you were tasting. The waitress didn’t talk much about the wine either- kept having to ask. First time here and won’t be back. Total disappointment.

Google
Customer service at its finest. The kind we don't see much of anymore. Genuinely kind, friendly people. They have a few wines, of many, that have residual sugar in them. They state this upfront on their wine list! All of the wineries should do this. I get optical migraines so knowing this is very important. Instead of having to ask and hoping the winery server is knowledgeable enough to answer & will do so honestly, Kai-Samone states this upfront. Very nice visit, good wine and great setting! Seating for someone with a dog is outdoors which is completely reasonable to me. They even took the time to compliment how quiet and well behaved my little fella was. *Please make sure you have a handle on your dog & have them well trained before going to public places so this perk does not disappear for the rest of us.*

Me and my bestie took a little raid trip to this winery yesterday. So glad we did cause the owner was so nice and the young lady who works there was very helpful telling us about the winery and wines. The atmosphere was so nice we sat outside on the patio and enjoyed the view it was very relaxing. Before we left we ordered a pizza and boy the pizza was so delicious and wines are very delicious 😋 We will definitely go back again and support this veteran owned winery 🍷❤️

Google
Lovely winery and super friendly staff. Lovely outdoor space with covered seating and big Texas sky views. Indoor seating as well with plenty of parking. Not pretentious at all, but it is not for kids. Wine was delicious, we had the red zin. Prices are reasonable and really good compared to some. Would definitely recommend giving Kai-Simone a try!

Google
I really enjoyed it! It was my first wine tasting, and I absolutely loved the experience. The owner was so kind, welcoming, and down to earth. The winery itself is beautifully decorated and has such a great atmosphere. I will definitely be returning to take more classes and purchase more wine! 🍷✨

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A Hidden Gem Worth the Drive! We discovered Kia-Simone Winery while celebrating our 34th anniversary in San Antonio today— and what an unforgettable find! This 28-year veteran-owned winery is truly a hidden gem tucked away in the middle of nowhere, offering peace, beauty, and amazing wine. We arrived just after noon and were the only guests there. The weather was perfect — sunshine with a light breeze — and we sat on the covered patio listening to romantic classics playing softly through the outdoor speakers. We enjoyed a wine tasting, a delicious cheese tray, and a few glasses of our favorite selections. The all-female staff was not only beautiful but also incredibly kind and attentive. The owner even stopped by to wish us a happy anniversary, which made our visit extra special. The property is so serene and relaxing — the perfect place to unwind and enjoy great company. We’re currently searching for a venue for our son’s upcoming rehearsal dinner, and if Kia Simone Winery were just a bit closer to Houston, it would be at the top of our list. If you’re in the area and looking for a romantic spot to sit, sip, and soak in some tranquility, Kia Simone Winery is an absolute must-visit.

Google
Amazing staff, excellent wine, and great vibes. My wife and I really enjoyed this winery and have referred all of our friends. My wife and I had the flights and found some great wines from that. Also, the staff were personable and helpful. I really appreciate their service. If you can go to Kai Simone, go!

Google
First time but not the last! Very friendly staff (Haven). Wish more tasting notes/intel on the product was available. The CA cab was our favorite. Loved the vibe listening to the evening artest rehearse.

Yelp
This was our second visit to Kai-Simone Winery. My husband did a 6 wine flight tasting (also available in a 4 wine flight), but I decided to give their pear mimosa a try. The Asian pear mimosa was a great balance of homemade pear syrup mixed with moscato wine. It was not super sweet like most traditional mimosas and had a unique flavor to it. My husband enjoyed his flight and our favorite was the semi-dry rose. They have friendly, attentive staff and a beautiful outdoor patio with live music events (check calendar). We are also glad that we could support this veteran owned winery.

Yelp
The service was great, the building was cute. We sat in the outdoor space which was nice. We had the flight to taste a variety of wines. All were good!

Yelp
We decided to return to Kai Simone as part of a month-long birthday celebration. It is still a great place to spend a few hours on a Sunday afternoon. It was really quiet when we arrived so we decided to sit outside and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Our server was nice and had us all ordering and eating very quickly. We shared the Italian cheese and meat tray and did the wine tastings. The food was delicious and we all had a very relaxing time just talking and laughing and getting away from it all.

Yelp
It was a small nice place to relax. The experience was not what I expected. The wait staff was friendly . I believe the owner was there. I traveled 300 plus miles first visit and she walked by and said hi! Quickly. There was no interaction with guest. I assume you can walk around if you like. But you learn nothing about the wines or the location. My trip was about a hour. The charcuterie boards are that of a cheap setup . Hopefully as I start this new experience , I'll have a better journey next time at a different location. But I will not be returning. Was not there at night. It was about 1:30 in the afternoon. I was there when it was on 8 people dining last night Saturday (approximately 3 tables). while you were doing yard work. Thanks for replying but seeing that it was not busy at all. I should not have to go to the QR code. You should want to mingle so that we would support more and bring more friends to support you. Thanks for showing us we are just that customers.

Yelp
Always a great experience at Kai Simone! The ambiance is beautiful and relaxing and the wines are really great too! The service is great also! Highly recommend checking this place out! They offer private classes and event space too! And a list of preferred vendors so of you're looking to host an event definitely check that out too! We hosted a brunch and wine tasting and it was amazing!

Yelp
I was able to find this hidden spot from a recommendation. The service was very good.and the wine flights selection was excellent.I enjoyed meeting and talking with the staff and owners about a Jazz Festival.

Yelp
A great hidden gem! Great wine and snacks! Beautiful local winery! Veteran owner and operator

Yelp
Beautiful drive from San Antonio, lovely setting, and nice wines. We enjoyed some specialty pizzas with our wine tasting and had a great afternoon! Will definitely come back.

Yelp
Such a beautiful winery with great service and amazing wine selections. I came here for a private event to celebrate a friends birthday party. The venue has great outdoor space. A lot of open area with seating. Also a great covered area for music acts and dancing. One thing I noticed right away while sitting outside was NO BUGS. The whole time we did not get bit by a single mosquito. The lawn is treated well. They also have a nice layout indoors. Great bar area for wine pouring and a large room that can be a private space. Wine selections ranged from sweet to dry. I really enjoyed the Pink Sky Rose, it's sweet and easily my favorite. I mostly kept with that selection for the birthday party. I will be coming back to experience as a customer and partake in the tasting and music acts. It's also important for me to celebrate and support Black woman owned businesses.

Yelp
Kai-Simone Winery is one of the best wineries in Texas Hill Country!!! All of the wine here are delicious. My favorite is Pink Sky. The food is delicious, especially the charcuterie boards. The customer service from the owner and the staff is great. They take the time to inform the customers about the different wines and they are always kind and attentive. The owner, Dr. Adam make sure to interact with all the guests at the winery making sure each customer is having a great experience. The ambiance at Kai-Simone Winery is absolutely beautiful. They have a very elegant indoor space and a very relaxing outdoor space with plenty of covered seating. They also host different bands throughout the year. My favorite nights are jazz and R&B nights. Also, there are great perks for being a wine club member!!

Yelp
Hubby and I were visiting Marble Falls, TX when we learned about all the wineries located in Fredericksburg. Who knew that Central TX had so many wineries! Anywho, we decided to research black-owned wineries in the area and found Kai Simone. They are not located in Fredericksburg but we still decided to visit. Hubby and I hit the road on a Saturday morning and drove for 1 hour. We arrived a little before they opened at 1pm. The owner and the employees were nice. We had a lovely time as we did wine tasting and enjoyed some snacks. Christy was our server and she was wonderful. I ended up ordering a glass of Rose after my tasting. The Rose is fantastic in opinion - it's not too sweet like other Roses. If I am ever in the area again I will visit Kai Simone.

Yelp
First things first, the numerous signs telling you "No Children" allowed is a little off putting. They really need to chill. So many wineries who don't smack you in the face about that and they do just fine. However they let us bring our 5 week old in with us so we appreciate that. Second tasting are served in tiny plastic cups and I hate that personally, put that in glass so aromas can be better dispersed. We opted out for a tasting and got the Sangiovese which was good so kudos to that. The property is nice and the staff is friendly.

Yelp
My friend invited me to hang out. It's such a peaceful drive out there to begin with. It's not a hard place to find. The gps takes you straight there. The owner is super sweet. She took the time to come to our table and greet us. Make sure to ask us how everything was going and how we liked things. She took the time to recommend some wines and go over the different textures and flavors. I'm not a wine person myself but my friend and her mom are. I definitely learned a lot from them. We purchased a charcuterie board, it came with cheese , nuts & a super delicious olive jalapeños thing! MY GOD that was delicious. Did I mention it is a veteran owned , black owned , women business ?! Whooooooo as if It couldn't get better. But to makeIt better , it is SO peaceful out there Definitely recommend to check out.

Yelp
Woman owned. Combat veteran owned. Black owned! This place checks off a lot of boxes. Not only all that, but the wines were award winning and the owner and her servers were all super nice and charming. I am so glad I stopped by this little winery. It's a hidden gem for sure! The owner, Dr. Adams, is was so friendly and nice as she explained how she came to own a winery. We are so glad she did. One day, I'd love to come by and enjoy a glass of wine with her! Kai-Simone is a little off the well worn wine trail, but so worth the jaunt through the beautiful Hill Country to visit this special place. I like or loved all of the wines I tasted and I went home with two bottles. I'll make a point to stop by as often as I'm able. Salute!

Yelp
Unsure of how I learned about this place, but I'm so glad I did! It was a little chilly outside so my friend and I opted to sit inside. This location was decorated so beautifully and the staff was knowledgeable and friendly. I loved that each wine choice had a clear description of what we should expect. I so look forward to trying this location in the Summer for all the Summer time events! Definitely recommend!

Yelp
We learned about this winery from an article and decided we needed to visit. We were greeted by friendly employees and the owner. We did a 6 wine tasting and really enjoyed all the varieties of wine. The charcuterie board was perfect as well. The menu includes several options of charcuterie. We enjoyed our afternoon and returned for the live music in the evening. We appreciated the friendly atmosphere this winery offered. It is the perfect way to enjoy a beautiful autumn Saturday.

Yelp
Wine tasting poured in plastic pill cups, and not even once ounce pours. Poor quality wines. Nice atmosphere. They don't accept cash or America Express. Don't waste your time or money.

Yelp
We were looking to try out a couple of new wineries over Labor Day Weekend. This popped up on a Google search. For the tasting, you can choose four wines for $15 or six wines for $20. They are doing all tastings outside so that social distancing can be maintained and they brought all six wines out as a flight. Service was attentive and friendly and all servers were wearing masks. The wines were on the sweet side for my taste (I prefer dry, bold reds). They had a small selection of small plates (charcuterie, dips with vegetables, and pizza). My only reason for giving four stars was the pizza was a cheap frozen pizza that they heated up. We enjoyed the experience and supporting a new winery that opened up during a pandemic.

Yelp
Had a wonderful time at this winery. Even though the tasting room wasn't open, my boyfriend and I sat outside and enjoyed our time. My favorite wine was the Pink Sky Rose. It's not too dry and just enough sweetness.

Yelp
Can't wait to return!!! Love the atmosphere and the delish wine !!! We went to celebrate for Father's Day !!! Friendly staff and owner !!!

Yelp
Super cute winery up 281. I met the owner and her daughter and it made me love the winery even more. Friendly, kind sweet staff. I can't wait to go back and try more wine

Takiesha M.

Yelp
Nice outside ambiance with great wine! The moscato wasn't as sweet as I wanted it to be, but the Cocoa Berry was perfect! The barbecue contest was an added plus. The service was although they were pretty busy! We had so much fun! Love this place.

Yelp
Sheila is amazing, her wine is delicious, her personality is fantastic and her winery is beautiful. Plus she has live music on a beautiful Saturday. My friends and I are enjoying a delicious bottle of Pink Sky on the patio and are having a wonderful time :)

Keith N.

Yelp
Fair wine at a higher price. Property needs some better landscaping to keep up with other wineries. Music inside was too load and uptempo. Need to have more mellow jams something soothing and enjoyable so your not struggling to have a conversation.

K J.

Yelp
My granddaughters were in town from Houston. We decided to do a local wine tour of three small wineries to help small businesses. We were seated on the patio which was comfortable. There isn't a vineyard onsite which detracted from the experience. The Chardonnay was very good. Smooth with just the right balance of dry to sweet. We wanted to love this place as it is veteran owned and the owner was quite friendly. The waitress was socially awkward at best. She wasn't able to answer questions about the wine or small plates. When we asked for more crackers for the artichoke dip and hummus we were told they're pre-packaged so we couldn't have more. I was certainly willing to pay but that was not an option. I hope this was a unique experience and they will be successful.

Mike M.

Yelp
We've been members here for a couple years. Sheila and all the employees are super attentive and accommodating. Wines never disappoint and are always changing. No need to drive all the way to Johnson City, Stonewall or Fredericksburg. Kai-Simone has something for everyone. Cheers!

Kimberly L.

Yelp
Friendly owner and hostess. Lovely grounds, and of course great wines. Worth the visit.

Pat Q.

Yelp
I so wanted to give them a 5 star rating and it truly would have been if they had a better wine selection. The venue is clean, and beautifully decorated. Service was good. Set up makes it easy to socially distance from others. Easy to order snacks from menu. The one thing that was the deal breaker for me is that their tasting menu offered 7 wines yet all were VERY dry. There was one sweet one listed but sold out. I scheduled a group tasting for 13. Most of the people in my group made it through 4-6 tastings w/o finishing and absolutely no one made a wine purchase and that says a lot.

Nila M.

Yelp
Would've loved to give a better review; however, I simply can't. To start the positives, the place is beautiful and clean. Plus the ambiance was upbeat. On the other side, no one explained the different types of wines that we tasted like most wineries do: type of grapes, region, age of the wine, etc. The wine was served in shot glasses. I mean--this is a winery and wine should be served in wine glasses. Most of the wines I had were bitter. If the winery can make a few changes it would be a much better experience. Otherwise, I much more preferred the other wineries that provide the full wine experience. Room for improvement here!!

Amanda M.

Yelp
What a great experience! Sheila is amazing. The tasting was wonderful and her Rose is delicious on this beautiful day. They were so welcoming and took the time talk with us about their winery. We'll definitely be back.

Kate H.

Yelp
We went out last Friday with a group of friends for a private tasting! Everyone In our party had a blast, Sheila and Christine were so friendly and taught us a lot about wine. Thank you for an incredible kick off to an amazing weekend!

Yelp
Kai-Simone Winery is great place to meet up with friends, book a Private Party, wind down and absorb the relaxing atmosphere. I love being a Wine Club member, and sampling the great selection of Reds, Whites & Sparkling wines. So far, the Petite Syrah is my favorite Red. Very pleased that the Spring Branch location is an easy drive from San Antonio & Boerne compared to the further distance to Fredericksburg. Looking forward to continued experiences!

Kisha W.

Yelp
Amazing amazing amazing winery! Very personable relaxed atmosphere. The winery is beautifully designed and decorated, and the wine is awesome Definitely a best kept secret. I can't wait to go back!!
