Best Meals at San Francisco-Bay Area Restaurant in 2021 - Eater SF

"Kaidao Thai Street Food, an unexpectedly great little place I stumbled upon in a strip mall near the Sacramento suburb of Rancho Cordova. After each dish set down by our funny, snarky server — sticky coconut moo ping, rambutan red curry and a makrut lime-heavy southern Thai dry curry called kua kling — my friend and I looked at each other and remarked, “damn, that’s like, really good.”" - Eater Staff

Oh my gosh this place is AMAZING! the food is great and they are usually pretty busy because it's such a good spot, I had the pad thai (spicy) and it was just addicting; I highly recommend coming to try out the food here as it is cooked to perfection. I also had the Thai tea (as usual) and that was not bad). If you haven't had Thai food before; this is a great place to start!

Google
Support family owned, local businesses! Finally a Thai place that I don’t have qualms finding meat in my meals. I order the vegetable yellow curry and it’s delectable. He loves their drunken noodles and orders it without basil. The cheese puffs are light and crispy. Love the couple that owns it.

Google
In a nutshell; neat place to stop by and satisfy your Thai food cravings if you're in the area. The west-wind theater drive-in Is nearby so if you wanted to get thai food while watching or if you got around the area rather early and there isn't any traffic then well this is a neat place to stop by. It isn't the biggest restaurant but seats and tables were decent enough, no squeaking or table tilting. The man behind the register was rather busy but still attentive as he could. Food didn't take too long at all. Appetizers were first and that was great and before you know it the entrees were served and those tasted amazingly as well. If I had a few qualms about it is maybe the location it is at, as we parked and headed towards the entrance had a rather frantic person walk by clutching his bag as though he was about to get robbed speaking obscenities at the person he passed earlier. Don't know what that's about but well maybe that was just a one time occurrence. Overall still a neat place to try out.

Google
Small place that packs a ton of flavor in their dishes. I recommend you order ahead of time cause it can get busy with lots of orders even so the food comes out quick. Medium spice was a bit much for me, so be careful when ordering.

Google
Not my first time here, and it won't be my last. I should come more often because the food is fantastic. We did lunch take out which was quick and easy with online ordering. Curry puffs are good. The sausage is amazing, the sauce had quite the kick. Drunken noodles and fried rice rounded out the meal. This is a gem hidden in a basic strip mall.

Google
A cute clean shop that most would say "doesn't stand out". Well, I am here to say, THE FOOD IS AMAZING!! Please don't let yourself miss out on such deliciousness. It's also very affordable. Try it, trust me, if you like thai, you will enjoy this place fully!

I come here all the time to get their big noodle kasoy soup! I never ask for the menu and i always always get the same thing!!! Even though the waiter always offer me to try something different, i always get my big noodle soup LOL so the other day i finally went it with a slight change of heart and wanted to try their boat noodle. Let me tell you BEST LIFE CHANGER EVER!!! If you want reaaaal boat noodle, this is the place and it was DELICIOUS i tell you!!! I will be coming here every week for it!!! I totally forgot to take a picture, devoured the entire bowl within 10-15 minutes hahaha!!! Of course all their other is delicious too, ordered different dishes my first time here and would give all their food 10/10 but boat noodle is definitely 100/10!

Google
Great tasty food, just wish there was more of it for the price. Incredible khao soi, super creamy and had the perfect amount of spice. Also had the curry puffs, and they were super tiny but tasty.

Yelp
Food: Placed an order online for pad thai and pad see ew, both with steamed tofu. There's three spice levels; no spice, spice, and extra spice. We got the pad thai with spice and the pad see ew without. The spice definitely has a kick to it, so if your gut is sensitive or your tolerance is low, I would recommend no spice. The spice is GOOD though. Almost feels ghost peppery. The pad thai wasn't sickeningly sweet like a lot of Thai places do to cater to the public's palate; it was perfect! The pad see ew was mild with the soy sauce, which I loved. The portions for both were generous as well, and a GREAT price at $12.99/each for their lunch menu M-F. Such a good deal, especially for the quality. Service: Ordered online and it was ready to go by the time I got there. Easy and quick. We initially wanted to dine in, but the employee called us after I placed my order, saying they were short-staffed that day so they were only offering takeout. Ambiance: It was clean inside, but can't really speak much for the ambiance, since I did my order to-go. Tip: You get 10% your first order online!

Yelp
Just recently started working in the area and decided to drop by for lunch. What a great experience! I ordered the Khao Soy and loved it. If you're not familiar, Khao Soy is a Norther Thai curry based noodle dish. Many Southeast Asian ethnic groups have their versions of Khao Soy that are beef broth based similar to Pho. But the Thai version is chicken curry based. It's actually quite hard to find a restaurant that sells it. Had a great conversation with the water about the mix-up people have when ordering Khao Soy. He was impressed that someone actually knew what Thai Khao Soy was. I will most definitely repeat another week to try something else. I would like to add, if their Khao Soy taste that good, their curry dishes must be good too. Downfall is I was looking forward to ordering more Thai style street foods like the pork skewers they used to sell. Unfortunately I was notified that they have removed the item from their menu.

Yelp
Ordered by phone. It was ready in 25 min. Too bad they ran out out Mooping. Chicken Satay: 4/5. Never disappoint. Chicken was not dry. Peanut sauce was on point. Coconut shrimps: 3.5/5. Perfectly fried, but nothing special. Pork basil Fried Rice: 4/5. It had less basil fragrance than last tile so visited this place. Still good though. Beef Pad See Ew: 3/5. Not as sweet as last time I visited, but that bit of sour taste was a bit strange.

Yelp
Service was not good, waiter seems very disinterested in his job. Never checked on us, we had to ask for everything. Boat noodle Soup was super bland. It tasted like hot water with a little seasoning. The beef was fresh though. .

Yelp
I have been binge watching Parts Unknown with Anthony Bourdain. After the Thailand episode in season 3, I wanted to try Khao Soi and Thai Sausage. This led me to Kaido. We ordered Khao Soi, Thai Sausage and pot stickers. They were out of Thai Sausage, so we ordered Pineapple Fried rice. The Khao Soi was excellent, with lots of flavor, but as I think about it, I love curry, and this was basically Panang curry with noodles, excellent, but something I have had several times before under a different name. The pot stickers were not very good, and weren't even in the same ballpark at Chinese pot stickers. The pineapple fried rice was just ok. They do not serve alcohol, which was very disappointing. The décor inside is extremely basic. They do a brisk take out business.

Yelp
The food was very good I didn't get a chance to take a picture but I will be coming back for sure ! Service was great and everything tasted fresh !

Yelp
Best thai food I can find in this area of town, I don't even bother with other places. Seems family owned which I like to support. I love how they do the yellow curry, we love pad thai here without bean sprouts. Service has always been good to us. Got a call one time as we drove away because they wanted to be sure we got our sauce for the pot stickers. For whatever reason, how they flavor the meals is perfect for me.

Yelp
I found this place awhile back when I was looking for nearby eats where I frequent for class, and stumbled upon this hidden gem! I'm glad that I gave it a try, I ordered one thai tea and drunken noodles with tofu as my choice of protein. Both were great, the drunken noodles were fragrant from the holy basil stirred in - only downside is the overcooked broccoli and bell peppers however the noodles were fresh and had a nice bouncy bite to them which is the standard case for wide rice noodles. Order online through their website for 10% off your first order, very convenient way to place an order and pick up.
google avatar

Frances L.

Yelp
Excellent Thai cuisine Coconut prawn soup and the pumpkin curry with chicken and jasmine rice was delicious. Prawn spring rolls were epic
google avatar

Cindy C.

Yelp
Authentic Thai food! They make their Laos style papaya with crab. We ordered papaya salad, eggplant with pork stirfry, pad thai, and drunken noodles. If you order online, there's a 10% off coupon for your order. Great prices for lunch specials, good portions, nice staff. Inside seating is limited. We will definitely be back!
google avatar

K S.

Yelp
It was so tasty, I insisted on getting it again. Picked up a to go order, the service was friendly and it came out quick but not too fast like it was already pre made just staying warm. The man let us know when it was close to being ready and packaged it nicely so it wouldn't spill or leak. As delicious as the first time! My new go to Thai place, I'm so excited!
google avatar

Tammy P.

Yelp
So good! My new favorite Thai restaurant in Rancho Cordova. The portions are generous and the food is delicious. The Thai tea is amazing too
google avatar

Luc L.

Yelp
The food is a-okay... we ordered and waited about 30+ mins before getting our food. We had the chicken larb and it wasn't as citrusy as I liked. Have it with a side of sticky rice which came out piping HOT and perfect. Thai tea was no good, higher ratio of condensed milk than tea. The Thai fried rice is average, just simple fried rice with chicken. Food rating: 3.5. Just simple Thai food. Don't expect to be wow'd. Service rating: 2, short staffed and to-go orders took priority over ppl that dined in.
google avatar

Minh P.

Yelp
This mom and pop shop is very cute and cozy, most negative reviews seem to be about the attention to detail in the lack of service. I will say, the person who seated us was also our cashier and was helping cook the food so they are not exactly over staffed. However, this server was the reason our experience was so good, aside from the food that I honestly also enjoyed. I ordered the Thai sausage with sticky rice and it came with a homemade spicy sauce that was amazing. My wife loved it so much she asked for more and the server packed some to go for us! He also went out of his way to make my toddler a little strawberry drink at no extra cost! Don't come in expecting cuisine level service, but these unique hole in the wall experiences are part of the charm in my opinion. I'll definitely be back to try the rest of the menu.
google avatar

Christina D.

Yelp
I enjoyed the vegetarian red curry here. It was so tasty! The service was fantastic as well!
google avatar

Ray Z.

Yelp
Unassuming place in a small strip mall. Food was great, flavorful and properly seasoned. Not too spicy. The chicken satay, papaya shrimp salad, and yellow curry were delicious. Disappointed they don't have the moo ping for lunch. Service was quick. Prices are good.
google avatar

Vivi L.

Yelp
The Moo Ping skewers are to DIE for! The 5 skewers and sticky rice came to be $30 total after tip, and it was soooo worth it. Each skewer is very meaty despite them looking short! We ordered to-go but would love to try the rest of their menu. My only complaint is that I need more pepper sauce, but now I know to ask for extra next time!

Brendan K.

Yelp
I've tried many different Thai restaurants but this one is by far on top Came here for dinner on a Thursday night and it had a very welcoming vibe with the server being very caring. The server was very attentive and kind. The best part of this place is definitely the food!!!! I ordered the yellow curry with chicken and I recommend getting some rice with it but it was 10/10 it was very savory and sweet and has a nice spice that isn't overpowering. I also ordered the basil fried rice with pork and it was amazing! It is very well seasoned and every bite was just as good as the first! Would highly recommend this place to anyone that gets hungry

Yelp
I recently ate at Kaidao Thai food and was thoroughly impressed with my experience. I ordered the drunken noodle beef and it was simply delicious. The noodles were perfectly cooked and had the perfect amount of spice and flavor. The beef was tender and juicy, and the combination of ingredients in the dish made for an explosion of flavors in my mouth. I highly recommend this dish to anyone who loves Thai food and wants to try something new and delicious. In addition to the drunken noodle beef, I also tried the steamed pot stickers and they were equally impressive. The pot stickers were filled with a flavorful pork filling and were perfectly steamed. The dipping sauce that came with the pot stickers was the perfect complement and elevated the dish to the next level. Overall, I had a fantastic experience at Kaidao Thai food and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for authentic and delicious Thai cuisine. The food was fresh, flavorful and cooked to perfection, and the service was excellent. I cannot wait to go back and try more dishes from their menu.

Sergio D.

Yelp
Absolutely the best Thai Food hands down! Quality food at a fair price! Dinner portions are best! Good value!
google avatar

Umar G.

Yelp
Good food! Had the drunken noodles, vegetable spring rolls, and the chicken on a stick (forget the name). All were flavorful, but the peanut sauce could have been done with more flavor and presentation. I would definitely order to go eat next time, and as with all mom-and-pop places, it seems somethings may be better than others. Drunken noodles were really good but the sping rolls were kind of bland and they didn't offer any chili sauce or chopsticks. I wouldn't come here expecting service and make it a point to ask for the condiments of your choice.
google avatar

Paul G.

Yelp
Teste food, delicious Thai dishes. Small restaurant and good for takeout. I like the basil chicken or shrimp.
google avatar

Monthica K.

Yelp
Hands down, thee best Thai food in the Rancho area. I've been to many great Thai restaurants in the Sacramento area and this comes very close, if not, better to those. I am a huge foodie so I know good food when I smell it. Everything from the red curry to the pad see ew down to the mango sticky rice. *chefs kiss* I'm a regular.

Yelp
HIDDEN GEM, HOLE-IN-THE WALL alert!!! Their food is soooo DELICIOUS! Located in a little strip mall near the intersection of Bradshawl and Folsom, on Folsom Blvd. A restaurant among many that may be easily missed, and if you miss it, what a loss. It's 2-3 doors down from Pita Q, parking spaces are available for ease of access. This is a small family owned Thai restaurant, maybe seats 30 people inside, very clean and simple. Lots of take out orders it seems. Friendly cook and staff are make experience much enjoyable. Now, on to the food. If this is your first time here, you HAVE TO try their famous "Mooping". Be sure to call first just to make sure they are not all sold out. Mooping comes with 5 decent sized sweet glazed pork skewers, freshly made sticky rice, and chilli dressing. The chilli dressing does have some heat, but sooooo flavorful! The sticky rice was also well cooked and fresh, just remember to seal the wrap and close the cap once you take out the rice, as the rice dries up fast, this keeps the moisture in. The pork skewer itself has a semi crunchy sweet glaze outside and the meat inside is fresh and tender - very well seasoned! It's a combination of savory and sweet, slightly on the sweeter side. It was delicious and filling! In addition, we also ordered Southern styled Pad Thai, they use glass (clear) noodles instead of your traditional rice noodle. I was slightly skeptical at first, but it was delicious, it's on the sweeter end but got a nice tang to it! The chewy texture of the noodle made the dish so much more enjoyable! So good. Previously, we had kua kling and drunken noodles (pad kee mao), both were so tasty. Their cook is great : ) Anyhow, I HIGHLY recommend this place, try the mooping! I repeat, try the Mooping! Though anything the cook made so far had been delicious!

Yelp
Very good Thai food. There online and in person menus don't always match, but they have some great lunch specials too.

Yelp
Review During Covid: Kaidao Thai Street Food is located in a small shopping center and there is plenty of parking in a private lot. My date and I pretty much got front row parking. Upon entering, we realized we were the only customers there so the host told us to sit wherever we would like. I was actually feeling kind of bad for the place since it was super dead, but boy was I wrong for feeling that way. Sure enough, things got super busy for Kaidao while we were dining there. Being Southeast Asian myself, of course I am a huge fan of Thai food. However, I am only giving Kaidao 4 out of 5 stars because the only reason why I wanted to check Kaidao out was due to the Thai street foods. I mean, it even states "Thai Street Food" in the name of the place. I was really excited to order the Thai Street Foods and they listed 6 different types on their menu which they recommended. To my disappointment, the waiter said that only 2 out of the 6 items were available. Umm... what?!? What kind of place only has 2 out of the 6 Thai Street foods that they're recommending on their menu? I had my heart set on certain ones, but apparently they were not available. I ended up ordering the Thai Pork Sausage ($14.99), and the Beef Larb ($13.99) while my date ordered Chicken Pad Thai ($12.99). We also ordered Thai Iced Tea ($3) and Thai Iced Coffee ($3). The Thai Pork Sausage came 3 sausages and a side of house seasoned sauce and some sticky rice. The presentation was really cute. However, flavorwise, the sausages were okay. You definitely need the sauce to give the sausages some flavor. The sausages were also kind of dry. I'm not sure if they're supposed to be like that. The sticky rice was hot so I did enjoy that. I definitely think my Mom's sausages have more flavor and taste way better. I honestly don't think I would order this item again. The Beef Larb was good, but I do think it needed a hint of more lime juice. Other than that, it wasn't the best Larb I've had and it wasn't the worse either. The produce on the dish were definitely fresh. I'd definitely re-order this dish because I'm a fan of larb, but there's too many things on the menu that I would love to try before re-ordering larb. The Chicken Pad Thai was good, but once again, not the best I've ever had and not the worst. They did make the dish spicy as requested. The Thai Iced Tea and Thai Iced Coffee were both fine. Nothing different about them. My date was wanting to possibly try out the Thai Pink Milk, but he was talked out of it by the waitress. Overall, our experience at Kaidao was okay and I would give them a second chance just to see if their other Thai Street Foods are available. I think my date and I went there at a good time when we were the first customers there because after us came multiple parties. Some were trying to order and pick up their food. The waitress was apologizing over and over how the wait would be close to 45 minutes before those people could get their food. I could see some customers getting a little frustrated, but she was being honest with them at least. I'm thinking maybe they had a huge order that they had to fulfill. Anyway, there was only the waitress and I believe one cook in the back trying to manage the restaurant while orders just kept coming in. Hopefully this was just an off day and not how the place is always.

Yelp
We placed a phone order on our lazy Monday, food was ready for pick up in 15mins. It's super convenient. Right around the corner from our home, food was nice and hot. It hit the spot! We got 3 types of stirfry noodles; Pad Thai, Pad See Ew & Drunken Noodles. Although they were all good, my all time fav is the Pad Thai!
google avatar

Ariel M.

Yelp
Since I moved here around this area I was craving Thai food & found this restaurant when searching on google. Coming in I was greeted by a man that took my order he was very sweet. I ordered the papaya salad (Laos style) & the basil moo yor with chicken plus the fried egg on top. All were flavorful & I would definitely order here again to eat next time & will be bringing the family.

Courtney A.

Yelp
Kaidao has become a weekly takeout routine in my household. Their food is always hot (always prepared with a barrier of aluminum foil for freshness), the staff are incredibly friendly & accommodating (I typically add eggplant to my curry), and the food is nothing short of delicious! Definitely give the panang curry, pad see ew, & spicy basil fried rice a try! Bonus points, we love spicy food and this place definitely delivers on heat if you request it.

BooDee S.

Yelp
I've been here twice and always enjoy the food: Panang Curry, Pad Thai, Beef fried rice, all taste great The place is a little small, but it's a good size for dine in especially for lunch (not too crowded).
google avatar

Tanuray M.

Yelp
This place has service that was amazing. The cook came out and offered a bowl of soup that was a true Thai street food recipe. Not on the menu. She just makes it some times. Great food and great service
google avatar

Chelsea C.

Yelp
So. Freaking. Delicious. If you dine in please be patient as this place gets very busy with limited staff available. I had the chicken pad Thai, pineapple fried rice, and chicken yellow curry... soooo good. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Brad B.

Yelp
The cashew chicken is great. I look forward to trying more of of their menu. Please support this local business!
google avatar

Marina V.

Yelp
I keep wanting to like this place, but the food flavor is never the same! I love pad see ew and lately it feels as the portions keep getting smaller and smaller, the meat is minimal and so are the veggies. Please add more veggies and meat to the rice and noodles dish- it makes it more tasty.
google avatar

Alyssa Mae C.

Yelp
Don't sleep on this local business! The general area has mediocre offerings that seem to struggle, but Kaidao was great! My photos were taken while dining in before the quarantine. And my picky eater husband's been back twice since without me for takeout! I really enjoyed my avocado green curry. It was so yummy and filling. He raves about the boat noodles. Made flavorful as-is, it's kind of a big deal when he doesn't have to add any sauces or spices. Service was quick and friendly. Perfect for lunch breaks. Glad to have them close to our offices.

Thitaree C.

Yelp
Love their food! I am Thai and I recommend this place if you miss Thai street! Try this place!
google avatar

Emily Y.

Yelp
We love KaiDao. Every dish we have tried has not disappointed us. The curry dishes are sweet, savory, and flavorful. The soups hit the right spot. The noodles are delicious. This is also the only spot we know in rancho cordova that makes lao style papaya--delicious by the way. Service is good. Food comes fast but they weren't busy when we went. I highly recommend!
google avatar

Jim C.

Yelp
This place is along Folsom Blvd and looks cool from the outside. The menu I was handed had a few curries but no "street food" such as curry puffs or meat skewers. There is no bathroom, which is *illegal* in a place which serves food. The server then handed me a longer menu, and I asked for rice paper rolls and meat skewers. He kept up a routine: every time I asked for an item, he would go and "check" and then say that there were none of that item in the restaurant. This went on until I decided to go to Hong Kong House, which does have food and a bathroom. Avoid Kaidao like the plague.

Vanessa L.

Yelp
My favorite dishes is the pineapple fried rice and pad thai. Really quick service and super friendly staff.
google avatar

Natalie G.

Yelp
Best Thai food in the area! I just started working in the area and came across this place. I love it so much. Always fresh, hot , and amazing. Highly recommend this place.

Jean H.

Yelp
Overly expensive Thai place. But the food was okay-good. I felt like it was more on the sweet side. Next time I will ask for no sugar if possible on the dishes. Other than that, we went in with no expectations but was surprised it wasn't bad at all. My bf liked it, it wasn't too bad for me but I'm not fond of sweet food. The first few bites were good and after that all I tasted was sugar. But I still ate the food. Service was nice.
google avatar

Luke M.

Yelp
First off, the food here is pretty good. I love Thai and Thai tea. Would give 4 stars based on my first experience. However, I found an entire wet wipe hidden in the meat of my meal! I understand this was probably an accident but that's a pretty major oversight. Edit: Brought the said meal back to the establishment. They were very kind and remade the meal. Really appreciated the customer service. Solid spot, excellent Thai tea
google avatar

Brian C.

Yelp
Kudos to the owners/chefs for always working hard. Despite the fact that only the two of them running the restaurant by themselves almost everyday, the food quality never change. It's always excellent. Do not get disappointed if they do not have some of the item on the menus. (Imagine working 6 days a week and then you have to try and find stuff for the restaurant on your only day off.) Moo Ping is my recommendation, but you always have to call in and check with them to make sure that they have it because it's difficult to prepare. Another note is that even with the pandemic restrictions lifted, they can only accept dine-in on Monday and Friday because they are very understaffed. If you walk in on any day beside those two days, it will be take out only. Well, who is gonna cook for you if they have to be out of the kitchen and taking care of you too, right? :)
google avatar

Katie B.

Yelp
Good food. Kinda fun. But some of the experience is lost in takeout. Would definitely go back for a dine-in experience.
google avatar

Joel C.

Yelp
This particular location has changed hands a few times. Luckily, the current owners of Kaidao have a winner here. Seriously, of all of the numerous Thai restaurants I've experienced, Kaidao is my fave! First of all, the service is friendly and amazing. May (spelling?) is a personable, outgoing and provides excellent service. Now the food...the food is incredible. May recommended the green curry and WOW! So good! Definitely including this place on my weekly rotation of lunch and/or dinner. Highly recommend this place for both dine-in and take-out.
google avatar

Gladys L.

Yelp
I've been to this place a number of times and I always order the same two dishes because they are amazing! Panang beef and drunken noodle with chicken! Both dishes are so flavorful and the portions are great. Today I decided to try their papaya salad - I'm a huge fan but had never tried it from here. I decided to take a risk and ordered the Laos style papaya salad - it was so shrimpy and delicious. I only recommend this style to those who like very ethnic Asian flavors because shrimp paste is not for everyone. I'm sure their basic papaya salad is good, too. Anyhow, if you haven't had a chance to order from here, please do yourself a favor and try it out! Also, order and pick up yourself so there aren't any fees involved in their profit through delivery services. Let's help out this local gem through the pandemic.
google avatar

Kimmy B.

Yelp
Omg. Food is bomb. Thai spicy is amazing (always give us extra spice on the side!) and it's like $3 for double meat and it's actually double meat!!!
google avatar

Tiffany L.

Yelp
We ordered our food for pick-up and it was ready on time (within 10-15 minutes). I loved the yellow chicken curry here -- there was a spicy kick to it which I don't think it normally has at other Thai restaurants. I like spicy food though so it was a pleasant surprise for me. We also ordered the chicken drunken noodles. It was good but it tasted different than other Thai restaurants. It had different vegetables than I'm accustomed to for this dish, such as broccoli. The drunken noodles had good flavor but it wasn't spicy. Update: I ordered here a second time and got the spicy eggplant dish, but it was NOT spicy at all. :/ Disappointed since Thai food is usually known for being spicy. The yellow chicken curry was good again, but I think that's the only dish I would come here for.

Yelp
I ate there for the first time yesterday, which was September 20th and the food was absolutely delicious. I did not know I had a really good Thai restaurant so close to me. I had the yellow curry which had just the perfect amount of spice it was extremely flavorful. I really recommend this place for their large portions and delicious food
