The Best Restaurants in Porto, Portugal's Epicurean Gem | Condé Nast Traveler

"Blending Japanese izakaya tradition with the best Portuguese ingredients, the omakase centers on seven courses delivered as ten moments at a central counter for about 20 guests; highlights include an Algarve pink shrimp gunkan shaped like a rabelo with a sauce made from shrimp heads, freshly ground wasabi, yuzu kosho, tempura crush, and squid ink. Bread from Ogi is served later in the tasting so you don’t fill up, wine pairings range from sakes to vinhas velhas, and the dessert—charcoal-grilled mochi stretched under Azores Island cheese cream with a pear soaked in Madeira—balances sweet and salty textures. The warm wooden shelving and noren curtains create an evocative space that nods to both Tokyo and Porto." - Abigail Malbon, Jessica-Belle Greer

"Following something of the philosophy of traditional Japanese izakayas, this restaurant, located on the ground floor of a residential building on the outskirts of the historic centre, revolves entirely around a large, U-shaped sushi counter that can seat 16 diners. What is found here? An intriguing Japanese-Portuguese fusion cuisine, offered in an exclusive nine-course tasting menu based on the best ingredients of the day. The atmosphere is welcoming and the flavours are surprising!" - Michelin Inspector

Absolutely 5 stars for Kaigi in Porto! This was one of the most unique and memorable set menu experiences I’ve had. Every dish that came out was not only beautifully presented but also incredibly thoughtful in flavor, each one telling its own story. The balance, creativity, and attention to detail in every course made the whole evening feel like a culinary journey. If you’re in Porto and looking for something truly special, Kaigi is a must-visit.

We had a great experience at Kaigi. The interior sets the mood in a sober Japanse style setting. Seeing the chef prepare the food is a nice bonus. The food itself is fantastic, nice fusion between Japanse techniques and Portuguese ingredients. Without being too complex flavour bombs are delivered accompanied with nice sake or Portuguese wines. Very nice place !

We had a lovely evening at this place — the ambiance and overall experience were great. However, the main course (“prato principal”) was surprisingly small, and we ended up having to share it, which felt quite unusual, especially considering the €75 per person price. Unfortunately, I left still feeling hungry. If you’re looking for a light dining experience or just want to enjoy the setting, it might be a good choice. But if you’re going in with an appetite, you may want to consider other options or manage expectations.

Phenomenal! Definitely do the tasting menu - it balances out the different flavours perfectly. The service was also highly attentive, professional and they carefully explained each dish. The restaurant is also beautiful- feels like you’re in Japan.

Kaigi is my absolute favorite place to eat in all of Porto. Consistency is key and they nail it every. single. time! The dishes rotate to highlight the seasonal availability so dining here is always a unique experience. Be sure to ask for the Hokkaido Roll. It's a little secret item that you won't regret!
