I was a frequent patron of the Ala Moana Shokudo, but have never been to this location before, so we decided to try it out. We went for Valentine's Day and it was surprisingly not jam packed like many other places usually are. Service often makes or breaks the experience, so I'm glad the staff here was very friendly and attentive. Not overly so, just the right balance of attentive while allowing you space to enjoy your meal.
The menu feels limited, but it really only is because they didn't have some of my favorites I would get at the other location. Also, I don't eat many of the things they do have on the menu there, so my options were fewer. That being said, the restaurant vibe/ambience was nice. There were a number of bar seats as well as tables, both inside and some outside. The lighting is dim overall, but they have little lights at each table that they turn on so you can see your menus, food, and people at your table!
There appeared to be a single accessible parking spot in the very front of the restaurant, but also a large paid parking lot in the back. Finding parking was easy and the rates were affordable, which was nice. I think we paid 2.50 for around an hour. There are 2 entrances, from the back parking lot, which has stairs down into the restaurant, and the front along the street, which has a slightly steep ramp (just inside the doors). The front door also required a bit of muscle to get open, so while this restaurant is technically accessible, it could be a bit tricky to navigate if you use mobility aids, particularly if you're there solo.
Now to the food. My partner got the Chicken Karaage and Kakuni Char-Siu. The chicken was cooked perfectly, not overly dry/hard, and it was well flavored. My partner reported the pork belly was fatty and delicious. I got the Sashimi Sampler, which is my go to, and the fish quality was great! I planned to order the Hamachi Kama, but they had just sold out. That was going to be the main part of my meal, so that was a bit of a bummer, but can't always be helped.
I tried 2 new dishes instead and while 1 was good, both didn't quite do it for me. The sauce on the Goma Hamachi was heavier than I was anticipating, but that's not necessarily the restaurants fault. I was thinking it would be more like a poke style with sesame oil, not a ground sesame paste. The fish quality again was good, and it did taste pretty good, but I definitely removed some of the sauce where I could.
The other dish I tried was the Atsuage, or grilled tofu. I'm a big fan of Agedashi Tofu, so thought this would be close enough I could enjoy it, unfortunately I definitely didn't. The tofu tasted burnt to us, almost having that charred taste that happens when a torch is used a bit too long. I'm not sure if it tasted how it normally does and we just didn't like it, or if it was actually a bit overdone. Either way, we opted to not finish it.
Last, but not least, is their famous Honey Toast. We always get the classic version and although the portion size was smaller then we were used to at the Ala Moana location, the flavors were still spot on! I think the toast could have used a bit more butter, but obviously the ice cream makes it not a real issue. I definitely would suggest asking for a tiny bit more honey as it's nice when you eat eating the outer portion to have that extra bit of sweet!
