This is definitely one of my go to spots in my neck of the woods. If I don't quite know what I want to eat for lunch. Their menu was affordable, their tempura always hits, and their soba is super refreshing. My personal order is a zaru soba with kakiage or gobo tempura and a side of the shishito tempura. If I'm really in the mood for a beverage, I usually get their melon soda. A couple things to note: 1. Parking is not validated, but the attached lot is pretty cheap. It usually doesn't run me more than $2.50 for a couple hours. 2. If you are dining with an elderly friend/family member, just be aware that the main entrance that we take has a few stairs leading into the entrance. Just make sure that they hold onto the railing since I know that some people struggle with stairs. But with that said, you could always take the front entrance, which is a little more accessible. Other than that, keep in mind that they have a wide range of hours and it's not uncommon for people to go there for late night, food and drink drinks. I haven't had the chance yet, but that's probably the next thing on my list whenever I have some free time late at night.

Amazing food and atmosphere! Our server Taj was very attentive. Everything was so delicious, the marinated quail eggs, beef curry, spicy tuna donburi and the sashimi was very fresh! Can’t forget the honey toast with matcha ice cream ( reminds me of my comfort dessert from childhood).

This place is LIT! Such delicious food selection and even better drinks. Perfect for a group or friends or a date. We tried a lot of pupus/entres and all of them did not disappoint. My faves are the Okinawan potatoes, the hamachi, cold soba, and the crispy noodle salad!

Google
Kaimuki Shokudo has always been a go-to Japanese restaurant for my family. The menu has a good range of selections that both the adults and keiki will find yummy; ranging from the sukiyaki-don (gyudon) to the soba with ebi & yasai tempura and lots more. We’ve only gone for lunch but each time we left feeling satiated and happy. 🤙

Our local friends invited us to lunch at Kaimuki Shokudo. So many varieties of soba so something for everyone. I got the classic soba and tempura and my wife got the uni soba. Both were very good and the restaurant was surprisingly large with plenty of counter top seats. Heard their dinner menu is completely different so would like to try it in future.

Google
Absolutely loved dining here. The servers were very attentive and fast. The food, like every single dish, was delicious. I highly recommend coming here. The ambience is appropriate perfect for a date night, girl's night etc. There is a parking lot in the back of the restaurant.

Walked in for late lunch, great vibes!!! Got the Yuzu Highball and Shiso-Crazy cocktail. Shiso crazy is so refreshing, perfect for the sunny Hawaii weather! I got the tempura cold soba with a lunch set of mini maguro don. Tempura so crispy, soba cooked to perfection with the right amount of "koshi". Neba neba soba was very refreshing too, every Japanese person's dream soba in one bowl. Will definitely come back again, gem of kaimuki!

Google
Great tasty food. seating of patrons is suspect. be aware if you order a lot, all the dishes come out at once. my only complaint that they should either have the kitchen fix this process or have the server communicate this. we ordered 6 dishes and they came out all at once on a tiny table.

Yelp
I was craving soba, and a friend recommended this restaurant. I was surprised to learn that Shokudo now specializes in soba--I remember visiting back when it was still around Ala Moana, and the menu was completely different. I was excited to see a wide variety of soba options along with other dishes. I ordered the saba soba and absolutely loved it! It was light, refreshing, filling, and most importantly, delicious. I'm a big fan of saba, so it was a pleasant surprise that the soba itself was infused with its flavor. I visited on a Monday during lunch hour, and it was pretty quiet--my friends and I were the only ones dining in. There are plenty of tables, so I can imagine it getting busy during peak hours, especially on weekends or at dinner time. During lunch, they also offer a special deal to add another item to your soba for just +$7. The staff was very friendly and welcoming!

Yelp
After sweating it out in hot yoga (so many moves, so much core shaking), we had to reward ourselves with something good. Closest spot? Kaimuki Shokudo -- been here a couple times and the food's pretty solid. Post-workout cravings were screaming "cold and light," so we started with the watercress salad. The flavor was there, but the fried stuff piled on top? A bit much. We ended up taking that off and just enjoyed the watercress, tofu, and that yummy sesame dressing on its own. Of course, had to get our faves -- the hamachi carpaccio and scallop. Never disappoints. Closed it out with soba for a little carb love. Normally we'd grab a drink or two, but we were on our "healthy era" tonight and went for plantation and peach iced tea instead. Overall, still a solid spot for late-night grinds with a chill vibe. I think I come here pretty often so yeah, 5-star all around.

Yelp
This Shokudo is one of my top spots for a late night bite. They specialize in Izakaya style small plates - perfect for sharing! Parking is in a paid lot in the back or there is street parking around the neighborhood. On the weekends, this spot stays open until 1am and on the weekdays they're still open until Midnight. Not a lot of spots in Honolulu are open late with this quality of food. The okinawan sweet potato salad is one of my favorite potato salads ever. It's topped with sweet potato chips, ikura and a soft boiled egg. Another crowd favorite is the chicken karaage with a yuzu mayo. Shokudo is known for their soba noodles that you can get here either cold or hot. Don't miss out on their spicy ahi bowl, hamachi carpaccio, or their garlic salmon roll if you're craving sushi! The cocktails here have some amazing flavor profiles like a yuzu drop, wasabi marg, and shiso-cucumber-yuzu. I've been going to shokudo for years and their honey toast is iconic - be sure to save room for dessert!

Yelp
I can't believe I haven't tried this location since they've opened. The menu was very different. I'm not sure if the intention was to be like the previous restaurant, but I wouldn't compare them. First of all, the vibe was really nice. During lunch when outside is bright, the restaurant is dim with beautiful lanterns hanging above. Christine was our server and being our first time, she shared that they specialize in soba and donburi for lunch. Their dinner menu is very different. They also have a lunch special if you order at least half a donburi or soba, you can add on variety donburi options for $6. We ordered the ume oroshi shiso soba, cold duck watercress soba with the additional vegetable donburi. The dishes were BEAUTIFUL and delicious. The shiso made a perfect combo of flavor with the soba noodles. The duck was tender and the broth was super tasty. The vegetable donburi was a nice add-on as well. My favorite was the duck watercress soba. I went with cold soba, but I think hot would be just as delicious. Overall, I'm very pleased with the changes they've made. I didn't get the opportunity to try their honey toast yet, but I will. I plan to return for their dinner menu.

Yelp
A nice lunch for four. I had not been to Shokudo since it moved from the Ward/Ala Moana area to Kaimuki area, and it was a great new spot. I miss the old Bread and Butter spot for brunch that was next door, so if that can come back too, that would be nice!! Noodle specials for lunch. They have a full bar. Every one was satisfied and stuffed! They have two entrances, one from the paid parking lot and one from the street. Short review but check out the photos. Yummy!

Yelp
My boyfriend and I went here for date night and it was a nice experience. We made reservations and got seated right away. We ordered quite a few dishes such as the zaru soba, Okinawan sweet potato salad, hamachi kama, spicy tuna don and chicken karaage. For drinks, I believe we got the yukari lychee-tini and the guava chu-hi. Everything we ordered was delicious! But my favorites were the Okinawan sweet potato salad, spicy tuna don and the chicken kaarage. The Okinawan potato salad was so unique, the ikura on top added a nice saltiness and we used the taro chips like a dip lol. The spicy tuna don had a nice texture and the right amount of spicyness. The chicken kaarage was crispy and juicy and I really liked the yuzu mayo on top! The drinks we got were good too. This visit was during their anniversary week and we got their special honey toast (with lemon curd and a cream cheese topping) and it was so yummy! We were so full from our dinner but we were still able to finish the whole thing!

Yelp
Excellent hidden soba restaurant. After eating heavy food on vacation I couldn't take it anymore and was hoping for something light and refreshing and one that was open late. Glad we found this soba spot and reservations are recommended although we didn't have one. The ambiance is fun, lighting is dim, and the service was awesome. We liked everything we ordered including the drinks. Their uni soba was so so good. Will be visiting again if I'm ever in Oahu.

Yelp
Late night dinners should always be at a bar counter. A drink and a menu. Start with your fave and try the rest, too. Check out the recommended items in the menu. The karaage chicken was good. The grilled vegetables was mm-mm-good. Miso butterfish was yum. Finish it all with a hot soba noodles. There's late night happy hour. Good prices on drinks. Speedy service. Super friendly. Super casual. Lunch is really affordable too.

Yelp
Table and bar seating. It does get crowded at dinner time. You can make reservations. Paid parking lot, lots of parking. There's street parking as well. Restaurant is clean. Staff is quick and service is excellent. Food was quick to come out. Food was great. Every dish was tasty. My favorite dishes were the garlic shoyu scallops, ahi tataki, and the tataki cucumber. Definitely recommend this place!

Yelp
Enjoyed dinner here with a friend! I have eaten at their other location before and was excited to have one open up in Kaimuki! We were looking for somewhere to eat last minute, and it was fairly late at night. We didn't have a reservation, and since it was pretty busy inside we were able to get a couple of seats at the bar, which we were grateful for! The servers were friendly and the service was quick. It looks great inside and I love the decor. The food was okay - I liked the hamachi, but the chicken, soba noodles, and sweet potato dish were okay and I probably wouldn't get it again. However, I would come back just for the strawberry honey toast!!! That was delicious - the strawberry ice cream was to die for.

Yelp
Kaimuki Shokudo is a great place for lunch and dinner. I come here for their soba. My favorite is the zaru soba. It's chilled buckwheat noodles with a dashi and shoyu dipping sauce. For lunch, they offer sets so you can do a mini don as the add on for $6 more. During lunch, the restaurant is quiet and I go there after 1pm so I miss the crowd. For dinner the restaurant is more lively and there's lots of people dining in groups. Their pupu portions are small but it is meant to be shared. I've always done family style just so I can more items on their menu. Every time I go, they will have 2 -3 new items added to the menu so I love that they change it up. My favorites are the Okinawan sweet potato salad, hamachi carpaccio, mentai mochi cheese spring roll, and the grilled Kauai shrimp. For drinks they have a very creative menu but prefer the mocktails. I rotate between the lychee soda and the yuzu soda; both are refreshing and goes great with the food. The interior of the restaurant is pretty. They kept the wooden things that hung against the windows in the original Shokudo. The ceiling has mini lantern lights. There's also a u-shaped bar so if you can't get a table, the bar seating works. Their staff are friendly and the kitchen staff cooks up the food in a timely matter. Their prices are reasonable. The best perk is that they open late. On weekdays they're open till 12am and on weekends, 1am. It's perfect for if you have friends that land on Oahu in the evenings and they want something to eat before heading to the hotel. For parking, I use the paid lot where Happy Days and First Hawaiian Bank are located. The entrances to this lot are on 11th Ave and 12th Ave. After you park, you can actually enter the restaurant from the back door so you need to walk around the block and go back to 11th Ave where their main entrance is.

Yelp
This place is hidden next to subways...they are located down a flight of stairs and there is no indication they are there except for a small flag banner...If the banner wasnt there it would look like a dark stairwell that you prob would not venture down. They are also no listing of them on any of the building directory signs.. Anyways the insides is on the dark side with a definite Japanese flavor with rice paper doors and japanese lanterns hanging throughout... The menu is limited (pic) (not too familiar with Japanese food) portions are typical of Japanese restaurants and prices was reasonable...They had alot of half portions which I thought was pretty cool. Again I dont normally comment too much on taste because we all have different tastes and preferrences but their honey toast dessert was awesome (coming from me a guy that dont like sweets or desserts says alot lol) A thick toasted toast on the outside but soft on the inside drizzled with honey with ube and vanilla icecream....a unique and dare I say "delectable" dish... They also have inhouse bathrooms which is important if you are dining with elderly... Oh and might be a good idea to make reservations..we just walked in and they only had a few tables not spoken for..The staff was very cool and accomodating ..it seemed to be a very popular place because by the time we finished the place was packed!! Definetely a place to return to

Yelp
I am so glad I ate here during lunch because they only offer the watercress duck soba during lunch. The watercress is crisp and bitter but in a unique way. The charred green onion dispersed its aroma into the dashi stock which is phenomenal. I cannot explain how enticing the broth is and sip after sip I want more. The soba is al dente (firm) and highly recommend eating this dish cold. I came back twice because it is that good. Wish they had more pieces of duck but still a 5 star meal regardless.

Yelp
I came here for dinner with my family while we visited Oahu and I absolutely loved it! We ordered chicken karaage, scallop, hamachi, and I got cold soba. It was so refreshing since it was a hot day. Everything was so delicious! I would love to come back. Highly recommend!!

Yelp
Love this little restaurant which takes me back to Japan. Simple menu with just the right options to choose from. We enjoy eating a variety of dishes and the prices are so reasonable. You can have a little of this and that, and it's so tasty. Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
I've been here many times and the service and the food was always good. It was pretty disappointing today as my friends sukiyaki bowl took waaaaay too long to arrive. Our soba dishes came out but her sukiyaki bowl and my friends spicy ahi bowl took over 30 minutes to come out. We suspect they forgot about it, as it came after we asked about it. My friends sukiyaki bowl wasn't hot, she said it was cold. Also, a spicy ahi bowl shouldn't take 30 minutes to make. Unless they ran out of rice and had to cook rice?? Hmmm....So I think our server forgot to get it. Kinda ruined the vibe as we waited for the dishes. I hope they bring the food out at the same time as nobody likes to sit and watch their people in their party eat.

Yelp
Opened on 4/14/23 on 11th Ave. in Kaimuki, Kaimuki Shokudo is a cozy neighborhood restaurant that is a Japanese soba-style restaurant by day that transforms into a popular izakaya at night. Kaimuki Shokudo replaced Japanese Shokudo Restaurant that was on Kapiolani Blvd. near the Ala Moana Shopping Center that was in operation for about 18 years before it closed on 3/31/24. However, Kaimuki Shokudo uses a different concept than Japanese Shokudo Restaurant, as the latter's target group were teens and those in their 20's. The only similarity is that both restaurants offer the popular honey toast dessert. Note that there is also a Waikiki Shokudo that is an izakaya restaurant in Waikiki that serves our visitor tourists. The owners have noted plans to expand to more locations on Oahu with different menu concepts. Kaimuki Shokudo is led by Chef Yuya Yamanaka, who is the Executive Chef at the Westman Corp. Tempura, rice bowls, and soba are popular during the lunch hours, whereas cold and hot pupus, soba, tempura, and rice dishes highlight the dinner hours. Hours of operation are: Sun to Thurs, lunch from 11:30a to 3:30p and dinner from 4p to 12m; and Fri/Sat, lunch from 11:30a to 3:30p and dinner from 4p to 1a (the next day). Parking is available in a paid private lot in the back of the restaurant or metered street parking. Note that the front entrance of the restaurant is on 11th Ave.; however, as many people park in the back private lot, they enter the restaurant via its back entrance, which has stairs, is sometimes dark, and hot handicapped accessible. Reservations are necessary. It appears to be a popular restaurant, and I was glad that I made a last-minute reservation for an early lunch on a weekday. During the time I was seated in the restaurant, walk-ins were turned away. The restaurant interion has a nice bar seating area, wooden teak-like tables and chairs around the perimeter of the restaurant, and lots of beautiful Japanese lanterns hanging overhead throughout the restaurant. It has a nice ambiance for lunch and dinner. I ordered Assorted Tempura, which consisted of 2 pieces shrimp, kabocha, eggplant, and Shishito pepper. I found this dish to be somewhat sparse and nothing special. Hubby ordered Nametake Oroshi Soba (hot) but was told they were out of the Nametake mushrooms; however, they suggested the Kake Soba (hot) with homemade broth and watercress served with daikon oroshi. Don't understand how they can be out of Nametake mushrooms and was disappointed with the basic Kake Soba without any enhancements. The daikon oroshi is tasteless and did not do anything for this dish. Perhaps we ordered the wrong things. Portions were small. I was thinking of ordering the honey toast, as that was what they were known for; however, at $14.50, I thought it was pricey for just bread, ice cream, and honey. No, not this time. As the restaurant was full, we didn't see our server throughout our meal other than when we first ordered. We had to wave for another server to get our bill. No checking up on us or refilling our water glasses. We have no desire to return; however, should we have a chance to give them a 2nd try, we will order different items on the menu. Hopefully, we will have a better dining experience with better service. We wish much success to Kaimuki Shokudo in their new location in Kaimuki!

Yelp
I came here for lunch with my friends - Sharon H. & Cathy I., to celebrate 2025 and I must say although the lunch menu was limited (especially if one is a practicing vegan), the staff here was nice enough to accommodate my friend to find something she could eat. We ordered the following items - 1. Soba with a side of Tempura 2. Watercress & Tofu Salad 3. Spicy Tuna Don I was the one who got the Spicy Tuna Don and all I can say about my grub was that the food was just "okay" for me. For what they charged, and the portion of food I got, I would say it was kinda underwhelming, as compared to the original Shokudo restaurant I've been to (when the restaurant was located by the entrance of Ala Moana Shopping by the Ala Moana Pacific Center). Service was attentive, and I'm glad they were able to accommodate my friend who is a hardcore vegan. The Kaimuki Shokudo had a cozy atmosphere, kinda dark inside, and as a OLD DUDE like me, I had a hard time seeing the menu! Buwahahahahahaha! Regardless, I think young people would dig this place, as it's geared more for a pupu/bar atmosphere. As for me, my bar dayz are long gone. Lol!

Yelp
Kaimuki Shokudo is one of my favorite places to stop in for a quality and delicious lunch. I love their menu and you can't go wrong with anything on their menu. Their service is awesome, and the atmosphere of the restaurant is really comfortable but also upscale. While the tempura is usually my favorite, this time I ordered their hot noodle broth and it was amazing. I loved the thinly sliced beef and the hearty broth. Comfort food for sure!

Yelp
My second time here and SO GOOD! This time I went for lunch with a few gal pals and a baby! We got the saba soba (our waiter said that was one of her favorites so we trusted her and it's a good thing we did!), the mermaid roll because it has shrimp tempura and it's called mermaid roll, and full beef curry! It was ALL so good! We ate this between 3 adults and we were full and no leftovers. The saba soba was good and there seemed to be a lot of soba which was great! The mermaid roll was delicious, the shrimp tempura was delicious! The beef curry was so good as well and a good ratio of curry to rice for me. Atmosphere - It is a bit dim as that is the vibe. It's a classy place but doesn't feel too bougie. There's a lot of bar seating and there's tables on both sides of the bar square area. They have two entrances, one from the street and one from the parking lot. The parking lot one has stairs FYI. One of our friends had a stroller so she came through the other entrance and they were able to accommodate space for the stroller so that was nice of them. Service - I forgot our waiter's name but she was so nice and she gave us good recommendations. She was sweet and saw us trying to take a group selfie and offered and took pictures for us so that was nice! THANK YOU!! The food comes out fast and they check in with you so that was good! Cost - The range is around $9.50 - $20 per dish depending on what you get of course. The soba was $17.50, mermaid roll was $16 and full beef curry was $18. There are half options for the donburi! Parking - There's a parking lot for all those restaurants in the plaza so I usually just park in there instead of trying to find street parking which can be difficult in that area. There's street parking and it's usually metered so you pay anyways. The cost isn't that high, I think we were there for 1.5 hours and I paid like $2. Location - It's in the same plaza as Moke's and Big City Diner. I would definitely come here again because the food is good quality, they have good prices, and a good atmosphere!

Yelp
Great location with cute decorations! Service was quick and professional, felt very homey. The food itself was good but nothing mind-blowing. Best thing we had was probably the beef curry, although I wish there was more beef in it. Definitely hits the spot if you're craving late night Japanese izakaya & soba noodles for relatively affordable prices!

Yelp
Went out for a late night cruise around town and decided to see what spots were still open for a quick bite. Ended up giving this place a try. Right when we walked in, we were greeted by the staff, super friendly. It wasn't too busy, probably because it was a Thursday night. We ordered a few of their most popular dishes, recommended by our server, and of course had to try the honey toast. The food was alright overall, but nothing really stood out. Most of the dishes lacked seasoning and flavor, which was a bit of a letdown. Oh, and the chicken wings had a heavy sprinkle of white pepper which was too spicy for my little one to consume. The honey toast, though? Easily the highlight, sweet and toasty, and definitely the most memorable part of the meal. We got a scoop each of Kona coffee and cookies and cream ice cream topped with honey drizzle. Glad we gave this place a try, but probably won't be back unless I'm having a honey toast emergency. Worth the adventure though!

Yelp
Came with a bunch of friends during lunch. As always, the soba here is top notch. Got the Tsukimi-Tororo this time. All of us got cold sobas and we were kinda surprised that it came out with the soba already submersed into the broth. For the cold dishes, I was expecting it on the side for dipping like usual. It was still really good, but the broth started to be overpowering especially since the dish I got was already almost liquidy/slimey as is. At the end, there was a whole lot of broth leftover and it wasn't really broth I can finish like ramen. Regardless, food was still excellent. Maybe I can ask for the cold broth on the side next time. The Soba + Donburi combo deal is mayjah and worth it. Service was great - they were really nice and attentive. Will definitely come back to try the other sobas.

Yelp
Terrific food, good service, all in a space that is relaxing and inviting. Good for groups, or if you just want to grab a bite to eat. The honey toast was a revelation! Toasted Japanese bread (with the insides of the bread cubed and toasted), recommend to get with a scoop of vanilla and a scoop of ube ice creams.

Yelp
Ala Moana Shokudo was one of my favorite restaurants for years, now after 5 years of being away from home it saddens me to discover that location has permanently closed. However, knowing that there's a location in Kaimuki and Waikiki is somewhat of a relief. While the other locations have a different and more limited menu than the old Ala Moana location, there's still much to offer in ambience, service, and most importantly, food. The Kaimuki location is smaller and has more of a dark, casual vibe, 90s retro music playing over head honestly felt a little inconsistent with the overall feel but as the restaurant began to fill, it was hard to hear anything over loud conversations. Nevertheless, we enjoyed our meal. We started ika karaage, which is great for anyone who loves fried calamari; nankotsu karaage, fried cartilage, i liked it but my cultural background taught me not to waste any part of a chicken, my husband however was not a fan; fries, edamame, shrimp and kabocha tempura, hamachi don, uni ikura don, beer and high balls. So good! We were there for happy hour, which i totally recommend. Still spend about $100. I miss the mentai mochi cheese gratin, which i read is available at the Waikiki location, the salmon and garlic shrimp hot rice bowls, and fresh tofu from the Ala Moana location but the food and experience here was still one we'd gladly repeat

Yelp
Kaimuki Shokudo is my go to spot for soba and they have great lunch specials. Located below Moke's and next to Subway, with ample parking available in the shared lot. Tables available through walk-ins or a reservation, but I would recommend a reservation. Walking down the staircase using the back entrance can be a bit treacherous, so I would suggest using the front entrance off of 11th avenue. The lighting is dim and seating tight, but the good food and friendly service makes it worth a visit. Everyone in our group ordered the lunch special: any soba with a half donburi for +$6.00. The cold soba is refreshing and the noodles are both bouncy and perfectly chewy; while the tuna in the half Maguro donburi is fresh, silky, and melts in your mouth. The Li hing mango soda was also pleasantly and surprisingly tasty.

Yelp
Stopped in at Kaimuki Shokudo twice in the past 2 weeks. When the soba craving hits - you gotta go! lol. I have become creature of habit - the hot saba soba is literally the best thing ever. Smoky grilled saba filet with a light but flavorful broth with yuzu and daikon oroshi? Pair this with Orion draft beer and I am the happiest clam to ever exist. This has been my order the last few months, but yesterday I tried a new menu item - the shirasu oroshi cold soba. It was good too, but truly nothing makes me as happy as the saba soba. Other things we tried: - New scallop tempura: just okay, the scallops were overcooked and a bit chewy. - Special lunch deal: $6 mini donburi with any purchase of soba. We tried the mini sukiyaki bowl and it was very good. The meat was marinated well and the beef was tender. I would like to try Kaimuki Shokudo at night too, they have a really cute set up outside.

Yelp
The food is well worth the visit - so many choices to pick from and they're all good. The chicken and spicy tuna bowl are personal favorites, and I also enjoyed the soba. It's nice and cozy and perfect for a small or big get-together - Miguel Morales Photography

Yelp
Came here for Valentine's dinner. Made a reservation a couple weeks in advance, but it wasn't too busy. Parking is within the complex and it was $3 for the time we spent there. There is two entrances - front and back. Right away, you notice the ceiling lights, which gives it a unique bibe. Each table has their own lamp that's adjustable with its light setting. Ordered a couple drinks and a few dishes to share. It's Izakaya style, reasonable priced and good to split. Favorite dish was the Okinawan Sweet Potato Salad. It's something different and comes with chips for added texture. The fish is fresh tasting. The drinks were okay, but out of the two I would recommend the Strawberry matcha delight. Overall, I would recommend this place for a girls/friends night. You can try a variety of things and the dishes are not too heavy.

Yelp
I was a frequent patron of the Ala Moana Shokudo, but have never been to this location before, so we decided to try it out. We went for Valentine's Day and it was surprisingly not jam packed like many other places usually are. Service often makes or breaks the experience, so I'm glad the staff here was very friendly and attentive. Not overly so, just the right balance of attentive while allowing you space to enjoy your meal. The menu feels limited, but it really only is because they didn't have some of my favorites I would get at the other location. Also, I don't eat many of the things they do have on the menu there, so my options were fewer. That being said, the restaurant vibe/ambience was nice. There were a number of bar seats as well as tables, both inside and some outside. The lighting is dim overall, but they have little lights at each table that they turn on so you can see your menus, food, and people at your table! There appeared to be a single accessible parking spot in the very front of the restaurant, but also a large paid parking lot in the back. Finding parking was easy and the rates were affordable, which was nice. I think we paid 2.50 for around an hour. There are 2 entrances, from the back parking lot, which has stairs down into the restaurant, and the front along the street, which has a slightly steep ramp (just inside the doors). The front door also required a bit of muscle to get open, so while this restaurant is technically accessible, it could be a bit tricky to navigate if you use mobility aids, particularly if you're there solo. Now to the food. My partner got the Chicken Karaage and Kakuni Char-Siu. The chicken was cooked perfectly, not overly dry/hard, and it was well flavored. My partner reported the pork belly was fatty and delicious. I got the Sashimi Sampler, which is my go to, and the fish quality was great! I planned to order the Hamachi Kama, but they had just sold out. That was going to be the main part of my meal, so that was a bit of a bummer, but can't always be helped. I tried 2 new dishes instead and while 1 was good, both didn't quite do it for me. The sauce on the Goma Hamachi was heavier than I was anticipating, but that's not necessarily the restaurants fault. I was thinking it would be more like a poke style with sesame oil, not a ground sesame paste. The fish quality again was good, and it did taste pretty good, but I definitely removed some of the sauce where I could. The other dish I tried was the Atsuage, or grilled tofu. I'm a big fan of Agedashi Tofu, so thought this would be close enough I could enjoy it, unfortunately I definitely didn't. The tofu tasted burnt to us, almost having that charred taste that happens when a torch is used a bit too long. I'm not sure if it tasted how it normally does and we just didn't like it, or if it was actually a bit overdone. Either way, we opted to not finish it. Last, but not least, is their famous Honey Toast. We always get the classic version and although the portion size was smaller then we were used to at the Ala Moana location, the flavors were still spot on! I think the toast could have used a bit more butter, but obviously the ice cream makes it not a real issue. I definitely would suggest asking for a tiny bit more honey as it's nice when you eat eating the outer portion to have that extra bit of sweet!

Yelp
So glad that this Shokudo experience was much better than the last one we had on Kapiolani! Heard mixed reviews so after having tried it for myself, happy to say that we really enjoyed it! Love that they kept the cool lantern decor from the former Hei Ho. Our server Reece was friendly and accommodating and we liked his recommendations. Here's what we had: DRINKS: *Yuzu highball Shiso lemongrass highball STARTERS: *hamachi carpaccio- sliced very thinly on a bed of thinly sliced onions with just enough sauce which might be not enough for those that like shoyu. Yum! *Okinawan Sweet potato salad- served with ikura and sweet potato chips. Beautiful presentation. Grilled vegetables- nice assortment cooked just right. Hotaru ika- me and my adventuresome eating friend enjoyed this but it was fishy for the conventional eaters. HOT DISHES **chicken karaage crispy thin batter , served very hot- might be the best on the island! I'm not usually a karaage fan because of the oil and batter, but theirs was so good we ordered more. Butter fish nitsuke- pretty good but more used to misoyaki style, and prefer it a little less salty. Looks like they also offer some outdoor seating. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
Great service. * Moderate noise level. * Parking is not validated, but price isn't bad and the machine takes credit card. * Food was good and fresh. * Would visit again. * Ordered the uni and ikura bowl - delicious. * Sushi was tasty and satisfying

Yelp
Family is in town and staying in Kaimuki so we made our way down the mountain to go to Kaimuki Shokudo, their favorite Japanese spot. We enjoyed a variety of Soba dishes and treated ourselves to a Mother's Day special that is running through May 11. It includes cooked apples with cinnamon and graham crackers. More than enough for the 4 of us to share. Reasonably priced, plenty of parking, but make a reservation so that you are guaranteed a seat because it does get crowded.

Yelp
Kaimuki Shokudo is one of my go to spots for group dinners. I love that you can get a bunch of small bites to share and that there's something for everyone. Parking is right in back, reservations are easy to get, and the food is solid. My favorites plate the donburis and sweet potato salad but everything I've ordered has always been good. I've always have a great experience here and love recommending this spot to my friends.

Yelp
Stumbled across this spot when we were walking in Kaimuki at like 10:00pm. Very worth it The menu isn't a sit down and fill you up type of dinner. It's a ton of different Pupu (appetizers) you pick from so expect to order at least 3 Inside is dimly lit and a more casual vibe. Reminds me of something you see in a movie date night scene of this makes sense The food itself isn't anything to write home about but gets the job done. Staff was all friendly and helpful with recommendations

Yelp
Came recently for some live music and to try this place out and it was excellent. Food was delicious. We tried the fries, which were so good we got two orders! Ahi don was also really good. Nice selection of drinks - we tried the lychee martini, yuzu highball, and some draft beers. Would definitely return!

Yelp
We had work lunch Wednesday at Kaimuki Shokudo. We made reservations at 1230 and thankfully we did because it started to fill up while we were there. I had scoped out the menu before hand and found the Shiso pesto soba to be quite intriguing. I couldn't find any reviews or photos on it so I had to try it. I also got a kakiage tempura since we were eating in and it would be so nice and crunchy. The Shiso pesto soba was served cold and I wasn't sure how it would be but it was quite delicious. The pesto with the Shiso was so refreshing and not oily at all. The kakiage tempura was one large piece for $7. A little over priced for one piece of vegetable tempura that had a lot of red ginger in it. I will however, go back for the Shiso pesto soba. That was *chefs kiss!* Service was interesting because there were only two people working the front. They were slow in getting our orders due to the amount of tables they were servicing. But the food came out super taste that we were in and out in 30 min for our group or three that just ordered our meals (no dessert). They might want to figure out a podium for seating because we ended up standing there for a bit because another guy was seated at the table we reserved. If they had a dedicated hostess that might help the front staff. Overall, great food! And parking is at the back in the municipal lot with lots of stalls.

Yelp
We three had a nice enjoyable experience for lunch on a Thursday after Christmas. Made 12:30 reservations via open table which was honored very easily and we were seated right away. Server was very nice and friendly. Atmosphere was pleasent. Good was very good. Only complaint is my beef curry came out around ten minutes before my two companions' food arrived, tempura & hot soba noodles and duck watercress soba. I was polite and waited and it was long enough my food was no longer real hot. I would come back again but only special occasions. $20 for lunch with no drinks is not in expensive. But thinking we should check out their 8:00 or is it 9:00 happy hour.

Yelp
Stopped by for an early dinner around 5:30pm on a Monday (we made a reservation) and got seated at a corner table. The restaurant itself has a decent amount of tables and a large bar counter in the middle with a relatively chill vibe. We ordered two sobas, yukari fries, the okinawan sweet potato dip, sashimi, a mango spritzer, and a side of sweet potato tempura. All of our food came extremely quickly and our food seemed decently fresh. Overall food was quite tasty and the service was friendly and prompt. We thought the yukari fries were a tad expensive at $8 and the we didn't really enjoy the mango spritzer as it was a tad too sweet and used artificial mango syrup, but we enjoyed everything else we ordered. Would recommend as a nice casual place for dinner and drinks.

Yelp
My honey and I have been jonesing to try kaimuki shokudo since they've opened in our neighborhood, but our out of town cousins finally made the reservation last weekend and we were SO impressed. The new menu is designed to be tapas style, small delicious bites that truly have an authentic Japanese feel. Their drink menu is quite extensive as well--a large selection of high balls but also matcha and spirit forward cocktails with local ingredients and collaborated with other small businesses. The hamachi, karaage chicken, cold soba, and watercress salad were among our favorites, but every dish was delicious and highly recommended by our server, who was attentive and encouraging of our weekday drinking. And of course, just like the old shokudo, don't forget the honey toast! They have vanilla and rotating flavors, and although there's only one slice instead of two now, we still indulged.

Yelp
My girlfriends and I met dined here with our friends the other night. We wanted to have dinner with them before they went on vacation for the holidays. I've dined with Shokudo when they were at the Kapiolani location but this was my first time at the kaimuki place. We arrived on time and was greeted and seated promptly. The place is on the small side, with tables pretty close together, but enough room to dine pretty comfortably. Because there were 4 of us, most of us, we were able to share a variety of pupus. I was a little sad that they didn't have the sushi rolls like the old place. Because the tables are a little small, we did several rounds of ordering. The wait staff made great suggestions as well as very attentive. Everything we ordered came out at a good pace. The food we ordered were presented nice, and all the items were very tasty. Their mentai mochi spring rolls were super good, we ordered more, and their soba was nice and chewy, and very tasty. Overall, we enjoyed our experience here. Prices are a little on the higher side but it's expected nowadays. The parking was surprisingly good (municipal parking lot) but then, it was on a Wednesday evening @ 5:30pm).

Yelp
My mom, girlfriend, and I stopped by over the weekend for lunch. I used to love stopping by their Ala Moana location with my buddies in my younger days, and my girlfriend and I enjoyed the times we got to go before they closed, so we wanted to finally check out the Kaimuki location. What better time than restaurant week, when they had a nice, composed teishoku set available? The location is wonderful. My girlfriend and I shared our 6-month dating anniversary here when it was Heiho House and loved the decor and vibe, and it fits Shokudo very well! Much of the interior was kept, so it feels very relaxed and familiar, a nice marriage of Heiho House and Shokudo. The staff was friendly and helpful! They almost looked closed when we came, which was understandable since we came during off-peak hours between the typical lunch time and well before dinner. The food was delicious! No complaints there at all: we'd ordered some tempura items, which Shokudo always does well. Cant skip that tempura kabocha! The sashimi was fresh and felt great in the palate. I loved the cold soba, while my mom and girlfriend thought the hot soba hit the spot. The potato salad was surprising, as it looked like it may be a sweeter dish, but it was pleasantly savory with I think pickled onions mixed in. And the washugyu don was very tasty, something I'd get a full order of during a future visit. We had to naturally top it off with honey toast. This is such a chill spot with consistently pleasing food, so I look forward to visiting again soon!

Yelp
The food was great quality and I enjoyed the ambiance of the returant at night! I ordered the Maguro bowl I believe, and the meat was so buttery I was full halfway through. The portion is amazing for the price (I got the full). My guest got the Uni Ikura Bowl and loved it. She also go the Li Hing Soda which she also said was good.

Yelp
Ambiance is nice and it's more of a gathering spot than a date spot, but still really nice. It's more cozy and dimly lit. I've been here numerous times and always try something different. Something I don't normally eat but ended up really liking was the hamachi collar. It was really good, sauce was ono and pretty meaty. The service is good too, someone always checking on you and there is plenty of staff if you need to get their attention. The food is more of a puppy style than full entree. But that just means you get to taste a little bit of everything. And even if it's puppy style it's still shareable.

Yelp
Location: it is a bit hard to find because there's no signs for the restaurant. Parking: there's a huge parking lot right behind the restaurant. Food: extremely innovative and creative! Hamachi Kama is a must try and save room for the brick toast at the end. Service: our server was so attentive and knowledgeable about the menu.

Yelp
Great variety and creative combinations of Soba! I wasn't impressed the first time I went, but this time, food had improved and the staff knew what each item was. (the first time I went the server didn't know what "takuwan" was- she thought it was some type of fish when it's actually pickled daikon radish! Price is reasonable for Oahu, plenty of paid parking, no validations, but cheap. Ambience is nice, kinda dark with contemporary Japanese feel.

Yelp
Last night in Honolulu and I had an amazing gastronomical experience at this restaurant. Food is so delicate, with layers of flavors that blows me away. They are prepared with much creativity using traditional methods and ingredients. And to top it all, prices are very reasonable. Will definitely be back for more whenever I visit Honolulu.

Yelp
Seen so many reviews for Kaimuki shokudo That we had to stop by Yuna provided excellent customer service and was very knowledgeable of the menu. The food was great and have to give props to whom ever was the cook, since It's been a while since I've had soba cooked properly. we got the following items and will definitely be back Zaru soba (hot) Tenzaru soba (cold) Tendon Uni and ikura donburi (half) Washugyu beef curry (half) Mermaid roll
