"Head to Kainos Coffee in The Dalles for outstanding coffee, Northwestern brunch-y fare, and Neapolitan wood-fired pizza. Mornings here involve maple bourbon lattes sipped while taking in the art, a geometric-style mural featuring a retro palette of pink, yellow, aqua, and black. Here, $8 will land you a 12-inch margherita pizza, along with a variety of other topping options to create the ideal pie. When happy hour rolls around, locals head to the bar tucked on the other side of a bookcase passageway for a speakeasy vibe and creatively crafted drinks." - Melissa Haskin, Molly Allen

Friendly staff, worth the price of food, great for brunch or lunch. Open seating area. Turkey sandwich and veggie omelette were great

Google
A place that doesn't over roast and burn the beans. They care about the integrity of the bean and flavor, not how much caffeine they can squeeze out of it by over roasting it. Something that is almost impossible to find anymore. Great coffee and great food. I was surprised to find they served food and even have a wood fired oven for pizza. I had their Italian grinder sandwich with an Americano coffee to chase it down. It was absolutely delicious and worth checking out if you're in the neighborhood. Update 5/6/23 another amazing cup of coffee and a pastry this time which was absolutely delicious as well. It's so hard to find a good cup of coffee without adding creamer or other things to make it taste good. I liked it so much I joined the coffee club were you get 10 bags of beans at a lower price when you prepay. Looking forward to enjoying a great cup of coffee at home.

Google
Great cozy place that we stopped into while traveling. Had a fun little kid spot to play in. Good was wonderful with very good selection of choices. Staff was very friendly and welcoming. I would highly recommend this coffee shop.

Google
Came in on break from a film shoot, great espresso, pizza to go was perfect for dinner on location later that evening, asked if they had anything with chocolate and they pulled out cookie dough from a fridge in back and baked fresh cookies to go. Saying the customer service was all time would be an understatement.

Google
Me and my sister stopped here to grab a coffee and I thought this is such a cute little place to get coffee! They also do pizza! The gentleman who helped us was very nice and laid back. The decor is gorgeous. This is a must visit if you want some good coffee and pizza at the dallas.

Google
Hands down the best pizza and coffee I’ve ever had. Idk if it was just the person who made the coffee, it was on the sweeter side, but I looooooove sweet coffee so it was perfect. If you’re not a sweets person I’d definitely recommend less sweetness but regardless I loved it. And the pizza oh my don’t even get me started. Absolutely phenomenal and so fresh. You can tell they put a lot of love in their food and care about fresh produce and ingredients. 10/10 would recommend to anyone coming through the Dalles.

Google
My family loves this place. They have great food and friendly staff. The whole family is welcome and the kids can play in a separate play area. I enjoy their coffee and the Mother Mary pizza, cooked in a wood-fired oven, is out of this world. Kids love that breakfast is served all day.

Google
Delicious coffee roasted by the proprietor? Check. Amazingly balanced pizza that looks and tastes fantastic? Check. Great atmosphere that is fun yet cozy but not boring? Check. Absolutely great spot on all points. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Miss these guys. Great GF Pizza and pasties. Excellent coffee as well. I was sad to see them close.

Yelp
I was first introduced to the Portland Kainos probably 8 years ago, and now that I live in the gorge, this was my first time to visit this location! It has the iconic wall from the original store on an even grander scale, making the large, open space feel so light and happy. Ordered the blueberry sage kombucha that was on tap & shared two pizzas with the two friends that came with: the Heirloom Pizza and Pineapple Prosciutto. It was the perfect amount of pizza for us, even had a few leftover slices. Everything we ordered was tasty and so satisfying. It was a lovely dining experience, plus I love their mission to give to those in need. Definitely will be returning!

Yelp
Always up for a wood-fired pizza, especially one with good reviews, so we called in a couple to-go last weekend. I chose the margherita and a half caesar salad, while the hubby chose the mother mary. The pizzas were ready on time, and customer service was very friendly. I loved the flavor of my pizza, my only wish was that the very tasty crust was a bit more firm. The edges were perfect and crispy, but the majority underneath was a just a little loose for me. The salad was just meh, pretty standard fare. The husband loooved his Mary, no complaints at all. We had a couple slices left over, and they heated up great for lunch....bonus, cuz I don't generally like reheated pizza. Nice place, good location, great service, and wood-fired goodness. I'm planning to return sometime and try them out for coffee and breakfast.

Yelp
This place is adorbs. I mean it combines all of our favorite things. Pizza. Coffee. Beer. And add on the kids area and we are golden! I called ahead to get a couple pizzas: Mother Mary and prosciutto arugula. Realized the menu pic on Yelp was old when I tried to get the gnocchi. They suggest a pocket sandwich instead so we went with the classic (house made sausage and arugula with balsamic vinegar). We added on a couple sodas, beer, and a gingerbread person to round it out. Good thing we called ahead cuz the place had a line and was only running with two people. They were trying their best to keep up! So as a result the wait was long but that's when the kids room was perfect. A little girl came and asked O if he wanted to play and off they went. The place is big enough for social distancing of table so that made it way more comfortable with our baby E too. The pizza was good! Chewy crust and lots of toppings with a really fresh tomato sauce. The pocket sandwich was super cute made with the same chewy dough and the house made sausage was fennel filled and yummy. Perfect with all our drinks! Will prob drop back on in at some point during our stay to get some coffee and treats.

Yelp
Best Margherita pizza around including Portland. It's pretty consistent too which is very important to me. Price went up recently but still affordable ($12). I don't know if I should say this but I always eat the whole thing myself. I just wish the Portland location served pizza. Kudos, Kainos. I will miss you when my work moves away from the Dalles soon :(

Jeff R.

Yelp
Painfully expensive. Two small coffees and it's over 14$. Hard to recommend this place when it's like 50 cents per ounce of coffee.

Mark D.

Yelp
Came in for the coffee and ended up with an amazing pizza. Very friendly service and high quality food. The spiced chai was spectacular, the scones were bomb diggity and the pizza was some of the best I've had.

Kim G.

Yelp
This place has it all! You can stop by in the morning for delicious coffee and amazing pastries baked in house, then come back later for pizza and craft beer! Everything is perfection! They roast their own beans and you can taste the depth of flavors. Buy a bag to go! The pizza is wood fired, has a thin crust, the perfect char and chew, and delicious topping combos. Typically I go with classics like a Margherita or pepperoni, but the arugula and prosciutto with buffalo mozzarella is killer! The interior is mid century mod with lots of wood and sherbet colors. I absolutely love it! So impressed to find a place of this caliber in The Dalles. Wish they had a location in Portland! Luckily I'm out in the Gorge frequently so I can enjoy Kainos coffee, baked goods, salads and pizza whenever I'm in the area. And take a bag of coffee, baked goods and bread to go! Located right on E 2nd, I highly recommend!

K K.

Yelp
I deeply wish they would deep clean the place and add cleaning the door with windex to the morning opener list. Good food and service is hard to appreciate in a grimy environment. Floor to ceiling this place is just dirty. Your front door is the first thing people see when walking up to your establishment- layers of greasy hand prints is off putting.

Jamie K.

Yelp
Good coffee and pizza. Nice staff as well. Coffees were higher quality. Good treats too!!

Karen E.

Yelp
Excellent pizza! The manager genuinely enjoys his job...and his customer service is above par.

Olga I.

Yelp
Cutest coffeeshop with the best pizza in town. If you're like me and like salad on your pizza, I highly recommend the prosciutto one. There's just something about prosciutto and arugula on a wood-fired crust that sweetens the deal. They have great coffee and roast their own beans locally, so stop on in for a latte and walk out with an additional bag of beans to go.

Kevin R.

Yelp
The Margherita pizza was really tasty and a great deal for the size. The iced tea was smooth and refreshing. I'll be returning to try their coffee out.

Rene S.

Yelp
This place is great, while still new it seems to have become a staple in The Dalles, also great to have a good place to get coffee downtown. One of the employees who I believe was named Mary is one of the sweetest people ever!

Matt K.

Yelp
Place is local gem! Food is great pizza is to die for and the staff are absolutely amazing two thumbs up

Times-Journal C.

Yelp
My favorite. Love the turkey sandwich. Very good coffee. I love Kainos and go there as much as possible.

Laura A.

Yelp
Stopped in for Sunday lunch on our dive through the Dalles. We had the pizza; half pepperoni and half Mother Mary, with kalamata olives. It was thin crust, baked in a pizza oven. It was spicy and tasty. We had an eclectic choice of sodas and juices out of the drinks fridge. It was enough food for two adults and two small kids. There was also a kids corner with toys that was appreciated by our 3 and 9 year old. We got a cinnamon roll, reheated in the pizza oven for dessert. The caramelized cream cheese frosting gave it a s'more-like quality that I will remember for a while.

Greg M.

Yelp
Wow.... This is top notch coffee and grub. Fantastic coffee roasters and baristas.... Outstanding latte, and excellent wood-fired pizza. Who knew The Dalles had this kind of a gem?!?!

Melodie D.

Yelp
I'd say 4.5 stars. It's a little confusing because it's a "coffee place" but they also do baked goods, pizza and other breakfast foods. I personally don't like the coffee they use. But that's personal preference, everything else is beyond good. The staff are always very nice and helpful. I wish they'd be open Mondays!

Bud O.

Yelp
Outstanding biscuits and gravy!!Excellent service with a smile . Kid friendly for moms, has play area.

Jason B.

Yelp
Great food. Fast service. Home made pastries. There coffee and teas are great. We most go here for breakfast.

Abreena S.

Yelp
I'm super picky with my coffee and was sooooo excited to have found this place! Delicious coffee and avocado toast. The customer service was amazing as well, very welcoming and good vibes all around.

California Car C.

Yelp
This place is so good. I can't believe this is my first time going here, I will definitely be coming back. I am so excited to have Kainos at the dalles. The place is so inviting and comfy and food and drinks are top notch!highly recommended

M C.

Yelp
Scones are out of this world. The avocado toast was delicious and splittable. Wonderful small downtown business.

Xenalia D.

Yelp
I chose Kainos bc of the Yelp pics. Generally if the latte art is good then the product is good. Maybe the person was new or doesn't care about coffee. My cappuccino did not have any latte art and it was was bitter. I didn't drink it :(

Nicole S.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite places to eat in The Dalles! I can't wait to come back! The coffee is awesome too!

Chehalis K.

Yelp
We stop here on almost every road trip going on 84. Great coffee, breakfast, pizza and service. Good vibes and nice stop to break up a long trip.

Tommie K.

Yelp
They were very friendly and the sausage mushroom pizza was great!!! I would go back if ever I'm going through town.

Gary D.

Yelp
It's hard to believe The Dalles is so blessed to have a place like Kainos. It is clearly the best food and drink in The Dalles. Not only does it have great coffee and the best pizza in town but they are also a bakery. The pizza is authentic wood fired neapolitan style pizza. They even import buffalo mozzarella from Italy. They are the only place in town to get authentic sourdough bread, which is the most nutritious and wholesome bread you can eat. Everyone should support this world-class establishment. Bravo!

Felice K.

Yelp
Swung by here for pizza to go and it was fast and delish! Good thin crust pizza with fresh and flavorful toppings, not too heavy. Definitely will be back when we can stay a while and enjoy the new cocktail bar. I guess I should trust a place that specializes in two of my favorite things, even if the combo is unusual.

Tiffany P.

Yelp
I absolutely love loooove their pizza. They have a rotation of fresh baked goods too that a scrumptious, especially the cinnamon rolls. My coffee connoisseur mother would tell you they have the best coffee roasts/blends ever and basically demands many bags when I come to visit or vice versa. This is a go too spot, check them out!

Brooke W.

Yelp
Always looking for Hemp Milk Lattes this is my spot in The Dalles,Oregon. Good bakery items and even loaves of bread to go. I will be back to try the pizza!

Stumptown Gal O.

Yelp
Tastey coffee, baked goods and staff. Great local vibe, open and airy. Enjoyed speaking with Martin, the owner. Sorry we missed trying the pizza- will be a 'must do' next time.

Cameron S.

Yelp
Stopped here while in The Dalles for work. I got the Margherita Pizza and it was outstanding. Also was amazed that it only cost 6 dollars for what was a 12 inch pizza. Their dough has a nice crispy and chewy texture and all the right flavor. The cheese bread was drizzled in a flavorful oil and had fresh mozzarella. While I was ordering I saw that they had biscuits made with bacon and a sweet glaze on them. Naturally I had to try one and my lord was that good too. I left getting two of those to go. Highly recommend this place.

Brandon C.

Yelp
Wonderful Place for a get together with friends and/or family. Bring the kids so they may enjoy the playful atmosphere with plenty for them to do. Trust me they won't be bored. Java, Pizza, and a wonderful atmosphere. I do believe they also serve beer. Good Food and Friendly service. I need to stop in for a fresh meal more often or even just for a friendly conversation.

Colin S.

Yelp
The coffee is perfect a rare treat for The Dalles. The perfect cappuccino tastes as good as coffee smells, extremely smooth. The pizza is amazing I wish so much that they had it for lunch, do not be daunted by the small menu they are happy to switch anything up to make the pie the way you want it. I actually did not love the first pizza I got but the crust was so amazing I had to try another one. And it blew me away highly recommend the Sweet pepper sausage.

Eric V.

Yelp
Although they are currently only offering takeout, the menu isn't lacking and the pizza oven is hot! The coffee is good and roasted on-site. The staff is very friendly and seems to adhere to all COVID-19 guidelines. Stop by in the evening and have Marten, the owner, throw together a delicious wood-fired pizza for you to take home and enjoy with your family.

Laurie A.

Yelp
Yumm! Pretty excited about this new coffee spot in The Dalles. I had my first coffee today and it was mighty delicious. The interior is decorated with a nice, bright color scheme and has a cool retro vibe to it. A nice inviting space to sit and chat with friends or get some school work done. I believe at some point in the near future they'll be offering pizza and beer, but for now it looks to just be coffee. I believe the location in Portland does pizza and beer as well. Attention parents - There is a big area with a giant rug and bean bag chairs for the kiddos the hand and play. My ONLY complaint is their hours. They close at 4pm everyday. I wish they were open just a little later. Say maybe 6pm? Maybe they'll extend hours when they get their pizza going (fingers crossed).

Jacie J.

Yelp
Highly recommend this little gem in The Dalles. We stopped in after a long drive to have some pizza and a pint! Martin cooked up some delicious zahh, it was a nice surprise to find a pizza oven in a quaint coffee shop. Dinner was delicious and the coffee too. Make sure you stop in on your way through!

Brenda V.

Yelp
Do not go here for breakfast or have a Mocha. Slow service even though it wasn't busy. Over cooked the eggs and weak flavorless Mocha. They forgot to make my girlfriend's coffee. We had to ask what happened to the test of our order. we were told they couldn't read the order I guess they weren't going to make it??? No apologies given. Don't waste your time here. Too many other places with better service, food and coffee

Paul D.

Yelp
This is a very pretty space -- painted mostly white, with a large play area for children to one side. There is lots of seating. They serve their own house-roasted coffee, which is quite good. They also serve biscuits that they make on-site. I had one with honey and butter. They heat it up in the pizza oven. While it was somewhat unevenly heated (and took a while), it still tasted great. Friendly service and clean bathrooms too.

Michael T.

Yelp
Wonderful food and coffee here. We had the Classic sandwich which was delicious. It's a sausage and arugula filling drizzled with balsamic vinegar. The bread is done in the brick, wood fired pizza oven. Very yum We finished with one of the best cappuccinos I've had since I was last in Europe. Will visit again when next out this way. I think they have a location in a Portland so will look for that one as it is closer to home.

J V.

Yelp
Friendly staff, delicious wood fired pizza, great coffee. What more could you ask for in a restaurant? Note: when they say 'spicy' sausage, believe them. I thought it was fine, but neither my wife or daughter could handle it. The "Mother Mary" pizza rocks

Camille J.

Yelp
Love this place, great teas and coffees, yummy pizza and salads, and an excellent kids area.

Brenna R.

Yelp
My mom and I stopped here on our way from Spokane,WA to Pacific City, OR and I'm so happy we did. First off, the town of The Dalles is super charming and worth the stop on its own but Kainos Coffee & Pizza is awesome! My mom and I shared the Prosciutto and Arugala Pizza and it's the best pizza I have had in a while! Highly recommend! I hope to pass through The Dalles again someday so I can come here again!

Al N.

Yelp
Awesome breakfast place. Will try pizza next. Eggs bacon with Cora chi honey was tasty!

Christine R.

Yelp
My gosh, the margarita is amazing! Six dollars for this gorgeous Pizza! The fresh basil and with a beautiful crust..a really tasty crust! Is to die for.

Jayne P.

Yelp
Trout Toast. Every trip from Portland to Moscow, Idaho my daughter and I share an order of trout toast, served on amazing bread baked at a Hood River bakery. She gets the house made chai and I order an americano. It's all tasty and satisfying. The on and off ease of the East end exit and easy to find street parking make this a great road trip staple.

Aaron T.

Yelp
This is a great shop with a friendly staff. Delicious coffee and tasty wood-fired pizza. The second time I went in, the young woman at the register saw that I had ordered a lot to carry (a couple drinks and avocado toast - amazing btw!) and offered to help me carry everything to my car. I was way across the street, so I said it was ok, but she insisted. I don't know that I've ever received better customer service. I believe her name was Mary Jane; they should maybe give that girl a raise. ;) Also, do yourself a favor and take some of their whole beans home. I tried the Guatemala - I don't have a fancy vocabulary for describing coffee, but the roast seemed on the light side and had a more interesting and complex taste than any beans I'd brought home for awhile. It was perfect just drinking it black.
