Kai’s Songbird delivered exactly what a proper brunch should be: relaxed, refined, and quietly confident in what it does.
From the moment we arrived, the physical space made an impression. The sculptural tree installation, layered lighting, and open, airy design create an atmosphere that feels calm and considered rather than simply decorated. It’s elegant without being pretentious, and immediately puts you at ease. The whole environment reflects care, thought, and confidence.
The food matched the surroundings. Presentation is precise and composed, but never theatrical for the sake of it. The Pulled Duck 88 Ways was a highlight, beautifully balanced and deeply flavourful, with just enough spice and sweetness to make every mouthful interesting without overwhelming the palate. This is food prepared by people who understand restraint and execution.
The cocktails were equally well judged. Properly balanced and thoughtfully prepared, with the Lychee Martini and Martini at Midnight standing out in particular, fresh, clean, and dangerously easy to enjoy. It’s clear the bar team take genuine pride in their craft.
What impressed most, however, was the professionalism of the staff. Marshal and Juju were warm, observant, and effortlessly competent, superbly supported by the incomparable Larbi. Service flowed naturally throughout, allowing the experience to unfold without interruption or fuss. A special mention also to Hermanwan, who kept a quiet, attentive eye on our prosecco glasses, ensuring they were never left wanting.
We had an unexpected pleasure when Chef Lucas visited the tables. It was a privilege to meet the guiding hand behind the experience. Hearing about the thinking behind the dishes, and the precision involved in balancing and delivering each element, added a deeper appreciation of what we were enjoying. You could see his pride, and it showed in every dish that arrived.
This isn’t a loud or showy brunch with broad ranged buffet tables. It’s something far better, a composed, confident, curated experience where you simply put your trust in the chef and enjoy the ride. The sort of place you leave feeling relaxed, well looked after, and pleased you chose well.
