The Best Restaurants on Ocean Avenue in San Francisco | Eater SF

"Okay, so you’ve crossed Junipero Serra and rolled down to the main drag of Ocean Ave. Here, there are two dueling sushi spots, but you don’t have to choose one to try — they’re both good. Those who prefer Kaisen Don are into big chirashi bowl action, with sliced fish arrayed over rice and dolloped with roe." - Becky Duffett

Very expensive but good food. For context, I brought my son for his 25th birthday. We had 9 people, all 17+ years old and _no_ alcohol was ordered. The bill for 9 people with automatic tip came out to be $390 or $44/person. With that out of the way, we had a good experience. The waitress was very gentle and patient. The place has nice decoration and Japanese architecture.. at least it reminds me of one which is a nice plus on the ambience. We sat at the upper platform so that part is not wheelchair accessible. They have both menu book and also QR code so you can see what the food looks like. The raw stuff were fresh. Photos shows the things we ordered and everyone loved it. Since it's very expensive, we only come here on very special occasion and this is my 3rd visit in 2 years. Yes I would go back again.

Me and my wife were in the city and we decided to grab a bite to eat on the way home. Found this place and let me tell you between the atmosphere and the customer service. It was amazing. It is nice, clean and different than anything. We have where we you from. I want to thank them for being curious and being very Hospitable. The Food was excellent. Definitely. Will be back when we come back to the city. The fact that they were open late was a big plus 4 us. Not a lot of people want to eat fast food all the time. And this was a nice sit down time. Thank you.

For two, I ordered the pork belly skewers, pork gyoza, and the bacon wrapped enoki to start. Then got the sushi tray A. Everything hit the spot and was delicious! The servers also went above and beyond and were very nice throughout the night. I really enjoyed the ambiance of this restaurant. Its warm, cozy, and can be seen as romantic in a sense. I would highly recommend the sushi trays for 2 people! Its just enough food and the cuts are much larger than other sushi restaurants. 10/10

Solid 4 stars! Kaisen Don has an extensive menu with many options not found at other sushi spots. The quality of their fish, along with outstanding service, make this a great place to enjoy a meal. On this visit, we had the following: Ankimo appetizer 10-piece nigri omakase Fairmont roll Kanpachi belly nigri Ocean Trout belly nigiri Chicken thigh, gizzard, and heart skewers Pork belly skewers Hamachi Kama I enjoyed every item. Cannot wait to come back and try more of their menu.

Google
Omg!! It is tough to find a fresh and melt in your mouth sashimi these days and Kaisen Don did just that. I usually don’t get the roll because I prefer sashimi over anything. App: Soft shell crab - good Tempura - good Hamachi Kama - highly recommended Entrees: Dragon roll, sunset roll are good But the Chirachi Don (camera did not get to eat this one but it is the prettiest plate out of all), and Blue Fin Sashimi Don was Z best, melt in your mouth sashimi. So so fresh. Updated: we went back again and the sashimi combo was amazing fresh. We chugged it down so fast so camera did not get to eat. Quality, quality, quality!!!

We had reservations for 7 but didn’t get seated until 7:30. There’s a post in the front door saying they are short staffed. Also, Mother’s Day is the busiest day in all restaurants. Food’s good. I guess I’ll go Saturday before Mother’s Day next year.

Location is tucked into a hidden street near the dealerships and Marina outlets. Small, yet private parking lot which I feel like is rare to find in this area! The restaurant was beautiful, and I'm upset that I wasn't able to take any pictures while I was inside. Most tables from what I saw were for two seats but I saw atleast one semi-private tatami-style (I believe that what it's called) group seating area which I thought was cool! My sister got the shoyu ramen (typically isn't available during lunchtime when we went, but our host made an exception for us since my sister has ordered it prior and enjoyed it!!), I got the Combo A, and we shared edamame, fruit sake flight, and tempura roll. Everything was so delicious! Fish was fresh, rice was cooked perfectly, and tempura was crunchy. I believe l've doordashed from this place before, but I'm lucky to have finally visited in person. I wasn't able to get the name of our server, but the lady with the short pink hair gave my sister and I amazing service! Periodically checked in on us making sure we had enough water and making sure everything was tasting good. The lovely service we received was the main thing that motivated me to leave this review. My sister and I visited around 2pm on a Saturday which is typically prime lunchtime, but the restaurant was practically empty apart from three other groups that were in and out during the time we were there. I truly hope this isn't the normal, because this place deserves as much love as I'm giving it! I recently came back from a month-long trip to Japan, and this experience brought me right back to it. The quality of this place was on-par to what I ate back in Tokyo and Osaka. For sure my favorite place l've tried in the east bay, and possibly even the entire bay area. I will for sure be back here!

Yelp
A solid 3-star Japanese restaurant in San Leandro. My husband and I came on a weekend Saturday for an early dinner and the restaurant was pretty empty. It feels like it will be more packed at night because they open late. Parking: private lot but not many parking spots. Ambiance: traditional spacious Japanese restaurant vibe. They have table seating and tatami seating for bigger groups. We saw a lot of family dinners when we were dining in so I think it's a popular spot for family gatherings in the San Leandro area. Service: 4/5. Service was above average. We were seated immediately and the wait staff gave us time to look through the menu prior to ordering. After ordering, the food arrived shortly. The wait staff checked up on us multiple times during dinner and we appreciate that the staff gave us the privacy to pay the bill by leaving us with the credit card machine. Food: 3.5/5. The Kaisen don was delicious. Portion size was adequate and the fish was fresh. We found the marinated ikura very unique. In addition we ordered 3 rolls which we find just mediocre. The sunset roll, the baked scallop roll and the marina roll. One roll was way too spicy, the other one was bland and the last one was a bit burnt for our liking. Price was expensive for the rolls but reasonable for the kaisen don. We will return for the kaisen don since the marinated salmon eggs are super unique but will probably opt out of their rolls in the future.

Yelp
Came here on a weekday for lunch with a friend and we were the first ones at opening. I haven't seen this traditional Japanese style of restaurant which was very nostalgic for me. The inside is quite large with lots of seating. Lunch was very empty with only a few more customers coming in while we were there. We each ordered a donburi which includes a miso soup that is packed with veggies which is nice since the meal overall is very sparse in vegetables. The salmon don was very good, and decent portion size, on the smaller side I would say. It comes with some egg and pickles, I personally loved the cucumber pickles and wish they had included more to balance out the rest of the bowl more. Overall it's a good place to eat for quality sashimi, definitely on the pricier side compared to other places in the east bay but worth checking out.

Yelp
Was looking for a sushi placed that closed later than 9pm. We found this place. It doesn't have a big parking lot maybe about 10-12 cars can fit. But there is street parking. They were closing at midnight. We came in during happy hour which was 830pm-1030pm. I also think there is happy hour from 4-6pm. They served are really nice. They letting saying thank you for coming in. There are plenty of tables of inside. Happy hour menu had a lot items. There is also a menu to scan on the table for more items. They had a lion king roll On the happy hour menu and it was a great price. The dishes were delicious. We loved the agadashi tofu. We also had chicken karaage, rock n roll roll, California roll with imitation crab. We will definetly come back because of the food and how friendly they are.

Yelp
Came on a Sunday for lunch. Not sure if we came on an off day or something but Kaisen don was entirely empty when we walked in. Throughout our entire meal, there was only 1 other table. We ordered a few nigiris, a roll combo, the 49ers roll, hamachi kama, miso soup, and some appetizers like fried chicken knee cartilage, geso karaage, and agedashi tofu. The nigiris were fine but rice-heavy. The roll combo was probably the best deal for the price. We didn't really enjoy the 49ers roll, especially considering it was almost the same price as the roll combo and a lot less food. The fried appetizers were fine but oily. We didn't love the agedashi tofu - it comes in a broth which means it gets soggy quickly, but the broth was pretty flavorless and didn't add much. Service was friendly, attentive, and prompt

Yelp
My boyfriend and I have been here twice now, with our most recent visit being this past weekend. This time around, we ordered the Croquette, Flamango Roll, Tempura Soba, and Toro Don. This was a lot of food for the two of us. We were there on Sunday at around 8:30pm, and the Croquette was part of the happy hour deal. The croquettes were warm, crispy, and soft, and I really liked them. The flamango roll was yummy. The mango added some sweetness, and the salmon tasted fresh. I ordered the tempura soba, and I liked it. The broth had a good flavor. The only thing I wished was different was how cut up the noodles were. Although it did make it easier to eat, I would've preferred that they weren't cut up into such small pieces. Taste wise though, no complaints. The tempura went well with the soba. Next time, I would love to try the cold soba. The staff was really nice. They came by to check on us a few times during our dinner.

Yelp
Interesting!!! Love their menu and decoration inside. They also have parking on site. This place is a bit a pricey side but it's good quality. Nothing tastes fishy at all! Not sure if it's just me or not but even the soy sauce!!! It does not taste crazily salty like other spots. Service is very polite and fast. We ordered Estudillo roll, Sunset roll and Kaisen Don which were very tasty but small . Our imported beer and sake were really great as well.

Yelp
I must be dining on the wrong days/times because there's usually never more than 3 occupied tables whenever I visit during lunch, but based on reviews this is a very popular spot. I came during weekday lunch recently with an assumption they had a bento lunch menu (my own fault for not checking ahead). I enjoyed a tempura udon and some California rolls. Friendly service, a little dim hahaha but I guess it's a popular late night spot.

Yelp
*4.5* An upscale sushi spot open until midnight? Count me in! Stopped by Kaisen don for dinner around 11PM on a Tuesday and had my expectations blown out of the water. Although their storefront is an unassuming standalone building with its own small parking lot, the interior is anything but, featuring a blend of modern and traditional Japanese decor and architecture that whisks you into another world. Wood and bamboo accents are the name of the game here, present in everything from the tatami room to the crisscrossing beams of the restaurant's ceiling. I was one of only two parties enjoying dinner at the time, so there were no issues with service from my server Dong. To start, I ordered crispy salmon skin dish and gyutan, or seasoned grilled beef tongue. The fry on the salmon skin was quite thick and gave it a hollow sort of crunch that was immensely satisfying, but the salt factor and yuzu flavor that it came with made the dish a little overwhelming. The gyutan was on the chewier side but had a great charred flavor that was perfect with the green onion and lemon. My entree deserves a paragraph of its own and honestly a spot on my sushi HOF: the omakase bowl. When I ordered, Dong let me know that they were out of amaebi for the night and if a slice of A5 wagyu as a substitute would be an appropriate substitute, which I delightfully obliged. The hefty $59.99 price point was more than justified by the fish quality, which might actually be some of the best I've had to date. Out of the 12 cuts present in my chirashi bowl, the standouts were the sea bream, seared bluefin tuna, halibut (firm!) and amberjack. Each piece tasted like it was at the peak of freshness, and a few came with instructions to eat as is as they had been pre-seasoned by the chef accordingly. I will dream of this bowl for a while. I sincerely wish I could come here more often for casual dining but it unfortunately lies outside of my regular price range. However, there's no mistaking that I'll be back soon. Thank you!

Yelp
We stopped by for a late Christmas Eve-eve dinner with family. The food is still decent. I liked the fried tofu. That was probably my favorite thing since I wasn't super hungry this time. The spicy edemame wasn't a hit with the family. My kids thought it was too spicy so I ate most of it and we didn't take any of the leftovers home. Coupons can't be used for groups, only for take out so I didn't need to sign up for their text messages. Service was fine, I didn't think they wanted to be there during the holiday season but they were nice.

Yelp
A nice, cozy Japanese restaurant to get delicious Japanese food from! My friends and I stopped here for a dinner and we were able to make a reservation for here. For a Sunday at 5:00 PM, the restaurant was somewhat empty however more people came by throughout the night. We did family style so we ordered an array of dishes. My notable dishes of the night were the takowasa, kaisen don, and the estudillo roll. The takowasa has the perfect kick of wasabi and it was the perfect cleanser for in between meals; I've had some takowasa where it was not enough wasabi or it was too much wasabi to where I cannot enjoy it. The kaisen don was so yummy! From the plentiful ikura to the sushi rice, it was such a well balanced meal for all to enjoy, It also comes with a bowl of miso soup. The estudillo roll took me by surprise because I did not expect a lot of flavors from a sushi roll. All of our seafood tasted so fresh and for a reasonable price! Apparently, we also came during happy hour but there was no happy hour menu so we weren't aware of what we could've ordered.

Yelp
Late post: I been wanting to try this place. It was pretty good. This place is pricey. However, the sushi was delicious. I like their Combo B, my MIL liked her sashimi. We enjoyed some alcoholic beverages. Our server is very proactive when it comes to taking our orders, & filling up our tea's. The restaurant is beautiful. Parking, however, is limited. I am not giving a 5 star because unfortunately one of the chicken katsu and marina roll was lacking flavor. The katsu was tough, over cooked? But otherwise, we would still go here again and try something else. Their menu is massive!

Emi W.

Yelp
My eyes are bigger than my stomach! 5 stars aren't enough for amazing food and service!

Yelp
Came here for a quick lunch date with my family and it was pretty good. We tried it for the first time I got the lion King roll, which is good. My boyfriend got the fish and that was really good as well super buttery. The service was good. They're very attentive . I would come back again.

Yelp
I've ordered from the spot many times online and recently decided to stop by and try out the in person dining experience. Nothing beats this quality of sushi along with the friendly and welcoming staff. There are so many menu options. Even items like the salad taste really good! I'd venture to say this is a spot where you can try any of those items that you want to be a little bit adventurous with and have a really good experience trying those new things. The last time I was here, I tried the fish soup, which is something I would never normally order and found it to be very delicious. The interior of the restaurant is very unique and has lots of spaces to create unique dining experiences. They have sit in tables and elevated clusters of seats. It's really cool, come and check it out.

Yelp
I come here once month, always have the freshest sashimi that melts in your mouth.. The service here is great, very attentive staff and always checking on you. The place is great for huge parties, large dinning area!!

Yelp
Came here after taking a class for work because this spot was nearby, and I heard this place was pretty good so here I am. I ordered the negitoro, uni, and ikura don. The presentation of this was just beautiful. You can tell it's high quality. Not to mention, this also tasted amazing. Everything just melts in your mouth. The service here was good also. The server was very attentive. The decor of this place is stellar. Definitely shows off traditional Japanese style. Try it out if you like. :)

Yelp
I remember when this restaurant was Shogun. Such an epic place to dine. Love the decor and tatami rooms. We came to Kaisen Don for happy hour and it was ok. We had the Hamachi Poke, Sunset Roll, a dozen oysters and hot sake. The waiter was unable to tell us where the oysters were from. So it was a surprise! Good thing we are brave adventurous eaters! The poke was my favorite. It wasn't much of a deal for happy hour but I'm glad we got to try. Still enjoy the Japanese decor.

Yelp
Came here for dinner on Wednesday, party of 2. Our order was: chicken udon, gyoza appetizer, salmon ikura don and I got an additional negitoro roll. They also gave us miso soup (which I think came with the udon and the don?). Total was $100 after tax but before tip. Pros: - Really delicious pieces of salmon in the don, very great texture and so yummy, buttery feel. the ikura also tasted very fresh, and the rice was solid. - the negitoro roll surprised me! It was super delicious - and originally I thought $16 was pricey for a maki roll, but the fish quality was delicious and of course fatty blue fin tuna is always a little pricier. - Hot tea was great - Small parking lot available which is VERY easy to miss when you drive here, but on a weeknight it was easy to get a spot Things that could be improved to make this a 5 star: - I felt like the service was kind of spotty. Originally when I walked in, the hostess didn't have me sit at a table because my friend wasn't here yet, so it was almost like she wanted to wait for my whole party to arrive first. But then she changed her mind and decided to seat me anyway. After our first round of food, I wanted to order an additional roll, but it was kind of tough to get her attention, and I also felt like I had to wait longer than normal for the check. Normally I wouldn't mind all these things , but there were only 3-4 other parties in the restaurant so it was less than 50% full. - It's definitely a little pricier than I would like for the amount of slices in the salmon ikura don - the salmon pieces were super thin, though very tasty, so I definitely was not full from one don hence ordering an additional roll. This might be because it's more upscale than your typical sushi restaurant. TLDR: Overall I wouldn't mind coming back, but hopefully the service is a little more spot-on next time. Fish was fresh and super delicious, great quality but low quantity.

Yelp
I'm so glad there's a sushi spot that is open late, has delicious food, and really great service. My flight into Oakland was delayed and I was worried I wouldn't find a place that was still going to be serving food after 10 pm. Thankfully Kaisen don is open until midnight, they even offer happy hour specials where certain items are priced a little bit less if you are there at a later time. We ordered a lion king roll, spicy tuna rolland one pork belly skewer. The skewer comes with a spicy seasoning you can add on top which was really tasty, and my favorite dish was the simple spicy tuna roll. I would also recommend getting hot tea while you're there, our waitress says they only use the good stuff- green tea and roasted rice.
google avatar

Michael G.

Yelp
Been to Kaisen Don a couple of time now and it's been great across the board. They have a lot of drink options, and they also serve skewers and other items not often found in other Japanese restaurants. Bonus they're open late! Will be back soon!
google avatar

Ivy Q.

Yelp
Waited over 30+ minutes for my Lion King roll because they turned off the oven.. it wasn't even closing time yet or last call.. they also did not say anything to us until I grabbed the waiters attention. I came in a little over an hour before closing. Great selection of food items on the menu. This is not your generic basic sushi. Qualify of fish seemed nice. Interior was nice. Regular tables and Japanese styled seating for larger parties.
google avatar

Tiffany C.

Yelp
Went here to try out their lion king roll, which is always my favorite roll at all Japanese restaurants. Unfortunately, I was majorly disappointed. The rolls not only were the smallest portion I've ever seen, but they were very, very dry and lacked the taste and flavor you usually get with lion king. Cost was high considering how much you get for it as well. On the other hand, the staff were very very nice. Just wish I had liked the food more.

Yelp
Recently came here for dinner with a group of friends on Valentine's Day. I've passed by this location many times. They have a small parking lot, so when it's busy prepare to park on the street. Luckily there's plenty of street parking in the area. We were able to reserve the tatami table, which I loved, it was comfortably and the seat had a back. We ordered the chicken karaage, fried chicken skin, sashimi combo, and sushi tray c. It was more than enough for 7 adults and 1 child. The sashimi combo and sushi tray came with fresh fish and the rolls were different enough that it didn't feel like you're eating the same thing over and over. The only complaints I have is that the service was pretty slow, and I'm sure a big part of this is due to how busy they were as it was Valentine's Day. The price is also on the steeper side. Would I go back here again? Most likely!

Yelp
Met up with some close friends and had a late dinner/snack and ordered off their Happy Hour menu. Two orders of Tempura: Fried shrimp & vegetable (4/5). Light, crunchy batter, and not much oil. Garlic Salted Fried Tofu (3.5/5). Cubed and fried tofu. Not much flavor, but nicely fried. [Sorry, no pic]. Oden (Mochi Kinchaku): Mochi rice cake wrap with fried tofu pouch in house broth (4/5). It's a bit small on the portion size. But it was pretty good. Takoyaki: Batter cooked octopus serves with special house-made spicy mayo (3.5/5) Chicken Karaage: Fried chicken served with a Sriracha aioli sauce and lemon wedge. (3.5/5). Bite-sized crispy morsels of chicken in a batter. Soup of the Day: Daily fish miso broth , daikon radish , carrot , scallion (Slow cooked 5 hours). (3.5/5). Flavorful and tasty soup.

Yelp
The food is great. I've come here several times. Service is very friendly and the ambiance is excellent. The overall experience takes me back to traveling in Japan. Thank you!

Yelp
My husband and I went for dinner one night and I've been craving it since. It was very fresh and delicious. We also got some chicken wings, food was 10/10. Not to mention our server was very sweet and took her time explaining the dishes when I was stuck between to options. Definitely recommend trying if you like sushi!

Alyssa W.

Yelp
Came here for dinner and the service was amazing--our servers were incredibly sweet, attentive, and remembered to check in consistently. Their nigiri was just as amazing the way it melted in my mouth. It's plated very pretty and is aesthetically pleasing as well. My favorite was the fish crudo and the albacore tataki. I definitely recommend giving this place a try!

Yelp
Wish I had better things to say about Kaisen Don but the experience wasn't great for me. Came on a Sunday evening and immediate reaction was they were way understaffed for the amount of people that were there. Tables were not cleared and wait staff took a long time to come around to take our order. The sushi was okay but definitely don't come here if you are in a hurry.
google avatar

Marie L.

Yelp
Service is good, my Hamachi Belly Nigiri is fresh, it's a little bit pricey for San Leandro folks I would say
google avatar

Richard W.

Yelp
Kaisen Don has excellent quality, fresh sushi. Some of the best in the area. For appetizers i like to order aged dashi tofu, garlic edamame, and chicken karaage for my daughter. My son likes the shoyu ramen which includes the chasiu roasted pork belly. When I'm in the mood to splurge I like the omakase don chirashi bowl. The fish is incredible. My only issue is the prices have continued to rise so my budget can only go so far when I have a family of four. I suppose most restaurants in the Bay Area are having this issue too but a Rainbow Roll right now for example is $18.99 which gave me some sticker shock. Overall, the service is good. Food is excellent. And there is a parking lot. All boxes checked.
google avatar

Auggie L.

Yelp
Went for Lunch Food - 5/5. Sushi here is exquisite and very beautiful. Each nigiri was perfectly uniform in shape and the rice ratio was excellent. Every fish was great but I was most surprised by their tuna. Despite being a lean cut, it was melt-in-your-mouth tender while maintaining a nice bite. Rolls were uniform and packed well with the nori having a pleasant "clean" taste to it. The namesake kaisen don had fresh and salty ikura, sweet crab and delicately soft scallops. Rice had a good amount of vinegar and sweetness that paired well with the seafood. Miso soup was rich and the edamame was cooked well. Service - 4/5. Professional and courteous service. Value - 4/5. The sushi is delicious and the portion sizes are standard for sushi combos being 7 nigiri plus a roll. It is very expensive with combo A at $28, Combo B at $36 and the kaisen don being $30. While delicious and worth a visit, it could easily make a dent on your wallet. Parking - Private Lot (Free)

Yelp
Semi decent sushi for the area, though not my favorite hence the 3 stars. Came here with my boyfriend and it was our first time trying it. We got the tempura dragon roll, the Broadmoor roll and I think it was the Marina roll. Honestly, all the rolls tasted really basic and bland to me. Though I liked the fattiness of the blue fun tuna, I had never had it before. I wasn't very excited to try this place because I heavily judge every sushi place that has imitation crab in most rolls. I just don't go to those places because I tend not to favor them. I this place is no exception. I really only came here because my boyfriend wanted to try them. Located off on Marina Blvd, in a very cramped area. They have their own parking lot, but I would just park on the street. the parking lot spaces are chaos and people think it's a good idea to make their own parking space. I got blocked in and took 5-10 minutes to end get out of the lot. I think their pricing is way too high for the quality and portion size of the rolls. I still felt like I was hungry afterwards, but I did not want to order more to pay $200 just to get full. Customer service was okay. You do possibly have the option to sit seiza, but I am not sure if you have to initiate the request or make reservations for it. It's not super traditional they just have your legs dip into the space underneath the table for the illusion. Overall, if you want to try them, caveat emptor.

Yelp
WHEN: Sun @5:30pm I was craving a Chirashi Bowl, when I stumbled upon this place. They seem to have a wonderful selection. They have their own small parking lot, and their restaurant is huge. It's well decorated, and I was hoping to sit in one of the tatami rooms, but that appears to be for only larger parties. Maybe because it was Sunday early evening, but the place was pretty empty. There was maybe 2 other parties that dined here. My partner and I shared 2 kinds of Chiarshi Bowls: KAISEN DON - $30 Sea Scallops, Crab, "Salmon Caviar" and Sides of Rice. Oh boy, this is everything I would love! So glad I had this. Everything tasted fresh. NEGITORO DON (limited item) - $39 Chopped Fatty Blue Fin Tuna w/Scallions, Side of Pickles, Avocado. I'm always a sucker for menu items that are for a limited time, as though this is my one and only chance to have it. And it sounded really good. This was a yummy dish too. They each come with some MISO SOUP which appears to also have cubes of daikon in it. It was hearty and delicious! Overall this was a wonderful experience, everything was good, and if I were to pick a favorite it would be the Kaiser Don. The bowls were hearty and we actually went home with leftovers. I know it's not ideal for Chiarshi but I dont care, we paid good money for these quality food. Oh and since I made reservations online, I was instantly added to their mailing list, and they always have take-out and delivery specials!

Yelp
I was surprised that there was no wait here since the food looks amazing in pics. I even came on the weekend. there is a parking lot and it doesn't look sketchy. The ambiance is like traditional japanese. There are tables that are very low to the ground. I didn't sit at that type of table but I think it's very unique.my husband ordered the mini omakase chirashi and I had the negitoro don. He wanted the negitoro also but they only had enough for one order. The negitoro was fresh, smooth and delicate. The omakase had a good variety of fish and there was no fishy smell. They only serve the best cuts. the servers were very attentive. I would love to come back if I was nearby.

Yelp
A friend recommended that I try this place knowing I'm a sushi-aholic. We came for lunch and the service was great. Friendly staff and the server even asked if it was our first time there to guide us to the QR code with the menu. It is eco-friendly not having menu but not as user friendly especially for those who have a hard time reading smaller font. Unless you already know what you want it takes a lot longer to navigate the menu on your phone. We ordered house salads , salmon sashimi, hamachi sashimi, and the Marina roll. The green salads were super fresh but giant pieces of lettuce making it a messy bite lol. The sashimi was good quality but portion size is a little smaller than we are used to. The roll was delicious all on its own and really didn't need any soy sauce. The albacore on the roll melted in my mouth. All in all I would come back if ai was in the area again but won't go out of my way to go here. The ambiance is great with traditional Japanese seating offered but that's probably why this place is a bit pricier. Higher end sashimi options great if you're wanting to impress. However; smaller portions for a bigger ticket. I'll stick to my usual spot.

Yelp
Of all the places in the Bay, I wouldn't have guess San Leandro to have this covert and demure, yet delicious sushi spot w/ tatami style seating! Birthday girl's choice and Kaisen Don it is! With a $700 check (+ gratuity) we did order til our heart's content of all the mouthwatering Omakase, Kaisen Don, Platters, Rolls, and a whole bunch of appetizers...it is fairly pricey here but per the chef, fish is shipped from Japan! Service was impeccable, excellent, quick, and friendly! We had a whole area to ourselves and we laughed and cheered and celebrated life for our girl. It was a very nice luncheon out! Even Lola Babalina had a good time! Arigato Kaisen! We cant wait to revisit and order more sushi!

Yelp
Stumbled across this place after looking for a sushi restaurant that was open late. I do not regret my decision at all -- I had such a good time and I highly recommend!! We were seated quickly with our party of 6 and the staff were very welcoming and friendly. Not only is the interior decor of this space something to admire, but the overall feel and ambiance feels very authentic. Food is 12/10!!!! I enjoyed some of these rolls that I've never had before and I like that they're named locally. I personally had two sushi rolls and my family members got udon and rice bowls-- I did not get a chance to try theirs but it sure looked delicious. Another thing I like is that it seems like they have a specific late night menu. There's lots of shareables and a wide drink menu. The best roll I tried BY FAR was the Estudillo roll but I forgot to take a picture. You need to try this roll. Overall, I have recommended this place to close friends and plan to return back.

Yelp
There's a parking lot so that's great. The parking lot is small so I recommend carpooling if you can. We were seated immediately and the waitress was nice. The interior is nice - very open with variety of seating. We were seated near a window. We got the combo B, tempura, and oysters to share between two of us. We had a big lunch so we weren't that hungry but if we were we would probably order one more of the combo sets. I recommend this place if you're shopping at the mariner mall nearby and would like sushi!

Yelp
Food: 4/5 Service: 5/5 Price: 3.5/5 Atmosphere: 5/5 TL;DR: This place has such a cute, traditional Japanese aesthetic -- most of the seating are regular tables but they have a tatami styled seating that fits larger groups. It does get a little chilly in there are lots of fans that are running throughout the restaurant. The service is great, everyone was really nice and patient. The quality of the fish is really good -- comparable to some of my favorite sushi spots in SF but does fall on the more expensive side. But for a restaurant in San Leandro, it's such a hidden gem. (also their wasabi is so good and strong, big fan lol) Nankotsu: *5/5*: Fried chicken knee cartilage. This was so so so good. If you like cartilage, you must try it. The batter & seasoning were delicious. It's pretty much like standard chicken karaage with pieces of chewy, crunchy cartilage pieces. Wish it came with some sort of sauce or aioli (but sauce isn't needed) Tuna Carpaccio: *4/5*: The tuna is delicious -- really fresh and soft, melt in your mouth. Pairs really well with the fresh greens and citrus-y sesame garlic dressing. The tuna was really thin and for the price, would've been nice if it was thicker. Salmon Sashimi: 4*/5*: 3 pieces of fresh soft, tender and melt in your mouth salmon. Can't go wrong with this (kind of expensive though) O Toro Nigiri: *5/5*: Such thick buttery soft pieces of tuna. The sushi rice was pretty good as well but not the best ever. Throw some wasabi on this and it's the perfect bite. Sunset Roll: *3/5*: the spicy crab and pieces of sashimi on top of the roll was good; however there was barely any tempura shrimp inside the roll. Some pieces either had just tempura batter (no shrimp) or such tiny pieces of shrimp so it feels like you're eating veggies, rice, and the fish on top. Also wished there was a sauce drizzles on top. Chicken Skin Skewer: *4/5*: pretty good, crunchy yet chewy. But for the price, probably won't order it again unless I'm really craving it. Pork Belly Nigiri: *2/5*: the pieces we got were way too overcooked so it was super dry and tough to eat -- disappointing that it was that bad, especially given the price too Tempura Udon: *5/5/*: this is SOOO good. we loved how the udon noodles were actually thinner than typical, and it was super soft yet chewy. The broth was perfectly savory and so addicting. Tempura is fried really well and it came with a "sauce" which was essentially the broth with grated radish in it. Would definitely order this again, we were so impressed.

Yelp
Cute Sushi spot off Marina blvd. Awesome tradition menu with a wide selection of Sashimi and grilled specialties. A huge bonus was finding Kaisen Don had an awesome "late night" happy hour menu.

Yelp
My husband and I went when they first opened. We happen to be at the Ford dealer nearby and I was craving sushi and this place was just up the street. Service was prompt and friendly. Lovely interior and fish was so fresh and delicious. It was such a happy accident to find a place so close by and have it also be so good! Ever since I've been dying to go back I'm hoping the quality is just as good as it was. I will certainly update once we go.

Yelp
Sadly my favorite sushi spot in Hayward closed, so I am sushi homeless. Based on a recommendation, I tried Kaisen Don. Let's start with the positives: Good lychee lemonade, good chicken udon. Clean place. A little too cold...but whatever. Now the reason for the 1 star. I was with my 13 year old daughter, so we ordered 1 lion king, 1 spicy crab roll with real crab, 1 rainbow roll with real crab. The spicy crab and rainbow roll were small, wasn't professionally wrapped like it was the chefs first day, and it was just mediocre. The Lion King - it tasted freezer burned. It wasn't good. There was no faking it. After eating one roll I asked to return it. She asked me what was wrong, I said it doesn't taste right, it tasted freezer burned. She told me this is a very popular roll and she would not be able to take it off my bill. Excuse me?! Whatever...you still need to take it away from this table because we STILL ain't eating it! So, my daughter still had to eat so she ordered the chicken udon and I ordered a 49er roll. My daughter liked the udon. The 49er roll, again, mediocre but doable. The still charges me for the lion king. I'll never go back! Horrible customer service! Mediocre rolls! Good luck but I wouldn't advise it!

Yelp
What a cute gem in San Leandro. I loved the interior and the traditional Japanese style seating. I think their food was pretty good overall but the sushi/raw items were the best. It was super fresh and very filling. Their miso soup was different... wasn't used to the way they prepare it. The unagi box was decent. We had a sunset roll and that one was decent as well. I would definitely come back for the Kaisen don and the Omakase don.

Yelp
I'm taking off a star because I had put in an online order, as I have done many times, at 6pm for pick up at 7pm. I get there at 7pm and it was not ready. The receipt even shows we were waiting for our order, as if they waited until we got there to start the order. There's a reason I pre-ordered for a certain time, so I would not have to wait as if I put in the order as a walk-in. I ended up waiting an extra 20 minutes for the order. And when I get home the steak teriyaki was a smaller order than usual. Not only did they make me wait but they gave me less for the increased price. I will hold off going there and try to find another place. It's too bad since I have been going there regularly every week.

Yelp
I placed on order online or I called on 1/11/25. I was greeted by a gentleman when I walked in. I told him I have an order to go. He didn't ask for my name or order number and told me to have a seat. I just thought they were super busy and my order would take a bit longer. 10 minute past and a female server asked me if I was waiting for an order and I told her yes she walked away and didn't come back. Another 10 minutes past and I finally walked up and asked the gentleman that greeted me that if my order was ready. He thought I was going to place an order and I showed him the receipt. His eyes widened and from his facial expression you could tell that he knew he messed up. He walked away and came back with my food. I asked him if my food had been ready from the moment I walked in and he apologized for the inconvenience and gave me a side of green looking noodle dish. I can't remember the name of it. This was my 1st experience at Kaisen Don.

Yelp
Glad I finally got to try this place! I went here for lunch on a Saturday with friends and it wasn't busy. The restaurant was so nice and a lot more spacious than I expected! I got the combo B and it was so good. It comes with miso soup, tuna rolls, and nigiri. The service was great as well. They checked up on us throughout our lunch. Will definitely come back here to try the other items on the menu!
