My sister was extremely sick and admitted to Kaiser Permanente Riverside. I want to begin by saying that the nurses who cared for her were kind, attentive, and compassionate. We truly appreciate the care they provided during such a frightening time.
Kaiser Hospital in Riverside.
Unfortunately, our experience with Dr. Duy Hao Phan was the complete opposite.
From the moment he entered the room, he made us feel unwelcome, dismissed, and not valued as my sister’s family. When my parents arrived to see their daughter, he asked my mother, “Who are you?” After she explained she was my sister’s mother, he responded with an attitude, “Do you have a name?” He then repeated this behavior with my father and immediately asked him, “Do you habla inglés?”
This comment was extremely inappropriate and offensive. No one should assume that someone does not speak English, especially when it was very clear that we did. The interaction felt rude, judgmental, and completely unnecessary.
Throughout the entire visit, Dr. Phan showed little to no empathy or compassion. He never took the time to explain my sister’s blood work or urine test results, despite multiple tests being done. Instead, he made us feel rushed, as though we were an inconvenience, and behaved as if he simply wanted to discharge her with pills and move on.
Because of his lack of communication and concern, we requested a second opinion. His response was dismissive and filled with attitude. He said we could see another doctor “tomorrow.” When we asked again, he appeared offended and said, “Okay, I won’t be here tomorrow. Another doctor will be here.” This response felt unprofessional and retaliatory rather than reassuring during an already stressful situation.
This experience was honestly shocking. I have never encountered a doctor with such poor bedside manner, especially in a hospital setting where patients and families are scared and vulnerable. We were made to feel like a transaction rather than human beings who were deeply worried about a loved one.
Kaiser Permanente needs to seriously address bedside manner, cultural sensitivity, and empathy. This experience was unacceptable and should not happen to any family seeking care for someone they love.
