"Kakawa (an Olmec word meaning cacao or chocolate) features a variety of coffee drinks, from Americanos and cortados to house, cold, and nitro brewed beverages. A series of mochas range from white to Mexican, Mayan, and Arabian. Food-wise there’s a selection of pastries and fresh sandwiches and desserts, including an affogato with gelato and Arabian mousse with cardamom." - Keri Bridgwater

Aesthetic small coffee shop with a few seating available. I felt rushed at the order counter from the lady. After our orders though she asked how we liked our drinks. The drinks were a little dark for me. I wanted to venture out and try new things. This place is worth a visit. Beef empanada: 3/5 (little dry) Kakawa iced latte w/ oatmilk: 4/5 Mexican mocha iced w/ oatmilk 4/5

Google
A nice and interesting place to get coffee! I enjoyed trying a new coffee, a matcha Coconut iced latte. I also loved they had some gluten free treats to enjoy as well. There were some seats to chat for a little while and relax. Overall a nice neighborhood spot!

Google
The service was good and the staff was friendly. Unfortunately, the Wi-Fi wasn’t working and there was no restroom available, which made things a bit uncomfortable. I ordered the Mayan Mocha — I usually enjoy this drink elsewhere, but here the spiciness really overpowered the chocolate and coffee flavors. It was a bit too intense for me. Overall, it’s an okay spot, but there’s definitely room for improvement.

Google
This is the best coffee I've ever had. Had the Kakawa latte and my husband had the Arabian Mocha. The quality was amazing. I tasted the coconut notes and the arabic coffee. It was so good that we wanted to circle back and grab more. Super friendly staff that made us feel at home. Very good location. Amazing place. Will definitely be back!!

Google
Kakawa provided Coffee and Hot Cocoa for my students and their families at our semi-annual Piano Recital in Point Loma. It was so nice to have everything taken care of-cups, drinks, creamer, sugar, etc. The coffee and hot cocoa were excellent as was their service (as always). There was also more than enough for everyone. Thank you Gladys for going above and beyond and making my event amazing! I look forward to our next recital!

The Americano was good and avocado toast was good (ask for ciabatta roll to be toasted golden mine was just warm bread). I came here for the avo toast and coffee because I heard it was so good. However, this will not be a destination coffee shop for me because no bathroom, nowhere to wash your hands, & only paper cups, Definitely a grab and go vibe. Also, kind of pricey. I spent $5.50 on an americano and then once I finished it, I asked if I could have just another half cup of house coffee and I got charged another $3.75 for coffee. I was told it's because it's organic coffee. Actually, if she had just filled my cup half way and let me know that next time I'd have to be charged for it that may have been customer service and that may have brought me back here, but I'm out. With gratuity, charge for 2 coffees ($10), and Avo toast, I spent $30 bucks. That seems a bit excessive for a coffee stop.

Google
This place has the best coffee, hands down! On our recent trip to San Diego, we went to this place every single day because it is THAT good! Gladys the owner is incredibly kind as well. We cannot wait to go back!

Google
Quaint coffee shop. Very good coffee. Great breakfast options. Empanada, ham and cheese croissant, pastries. Needs more seating. Area could be organized to seat more people.

Yelp
not a welcoming environment. listen to all the reviews saying the manager is rude!!! i have come with my friend probably about 3 times so far because it is close by her house. my friend always buys something but i choose not to because: 1. the coffee doesn't look good 2. they play pro-trump propaganda (lol) today, my friend was ordering and i overheard the owner talking about me to her. the owner was saying things like "she never orders anything so she is not welcome to sit here. she is always here and never buys anything". wow... i would get it if i was by myself but i was with my friend that buys stuff ($12 mind you). and i have only been here 3 times LOL. i went to the owner to have her explain to my face which is when she told me that i need to support the store because they support me... NO YOU DON'T!! all they provide is a chair, i dont even use their wifi. and my friend literally bought something so i could not understand why this was an issue... on top of that, the shop is literally empty. its not like im taking tables up from people, theres still open tables in case anyone comes in and wants to sit. the name of this place suits it well, considering this place and the attitude of those working here are straight CACA.

Yelp
Kakawa Coffee house checks all the boxes for what a coffee snob like me expects:) prompt service even in a full shop w a nice greeting and most importantly a coffee that surpasses anything else in the neighborhood. Quality of the coffee is top notch m, full bodied w a caramel like smooth finish. Not in a sugary way. i take my coffee w only steamed milk; either a Flat White, cappuccino or cortado. straight classic coffee. This neighborhood coffee shop feels like an extension of my home where everybody knows your name. Cheers

Yelp
Really great coffee this morning! This is a great spot walking distance from me now and I'll definitely be here regularly. Staff was friendly and nice and both of the coffees we tried were great. The Arabic Mocha had cardamom and wasn't just the same old coffee you can get anywhere. Also they had a live band in for the morning who were great!

Yelp
This is a cute little locally owned coffee shop in the Point Loma/Ocean Beach area of Nimitz Boulevard. The space is nice and clean and they had a small assortment of baked goods available. There's very little seating inside so we sat at the little makeshift table outside while we waited for our coffees. I thought it was kind of strange that they called out the coffees as they were done separately, even though my fiancé and I ordered them at the same time. My latte was done a few minutes before his Americano. The latte was good, standard. His Americano took a couple more minutes after my latte. He asked to have a little bit of milk added, but that milk must've been ice cold because his Americano was lukewarm instead of hot. Maybe the water added to the espresso shop wasn't hot? I'm not sure but it was kind of disappointing. We would for sure try this place again. The flavor of the coffee was quite nice and the people working seemed very friendly.

Yelp
Went in based on sandwich board sign I saw for this mushroom coffee out on the sidewalk. I was intrigued to try something new in different.. went into order finally had plant milk and decaf espresso, however, none of the prices listed on the board matched the cash register. They completely overcharged me. It's a case of false advertising. When I brought it up, the man at the cash register started arguing with me and then its wife/owner did the same, saying they haven't updated their print pricing for seven years and we're just supposed to accept the new current pricing that they have in the register. they were dishonest people and I didn't think it was safe to have them make me a drink after questioning the price and their business ethics. That, and the black Habibi T-shirt that hung a couple feet away were unsettling. Walked out and took my business one door up to the corner to Boba tea and had a better experience. I do not recommend this place.

Yelp
My coworkers and I were in SD area for a work conference and Kakawa Coffee was on their list "to try." I am always down to try an independent, mom & pop, coffee shop. On our first morning, before the conference, we stopped by a bakery first and then headed to Kakawa Coffee for coffee. There are some street parking on Voltaire St. The interior is so cute and cozy, and if I lived closer, I would most definitely stop by for a coffee and stay to read a few chapters. There are so many different types of coffee that are only offered here, I just wish that I lived close enough to try them all. There's always next time! Kakawa Latte Espresso w/ milk, coconut, and dark chocolate I did not know what to expect of the Kakawa Latte but it tasted amazing! The flavors all complimented each other really well. Not one flavor overpowered the other. It was subtle, yet distinct, and one can really taste the quality of the espresso. My coworker ordered the Aleppo Pistachio Latte (Rose water and pistachio, made breve) as they love anything with rose. They loved the flavor profile. Great service and wonderful tasting coffee.

Yelp
Quaint and cozy coffee shop. Pet friendly. Decided to try the Matcha latte and oh boy! I was not disappointed! I usually stay away from Matcha because most shops overcharge for artificial flavors, but Kakawa has the real stuff figured out! Delicious real Matcha flavor, they sweeten it just a bit to make it even better but it's not overly sweet. The staff and owner are super friendly and knowledgeable. They explained all their ingredients are organic and they ceeate their own mixes. They also have a good variety of pastries to pair with your drink. I had the almond croissant and it was warmed up and wonderful. I'll definitely be back! 100% recommended!

Yelp
Cute coffee shop where I discovered what the chagachino was! Nice place in Voltaire Street to get a coffee and spend a quiet time after visiting the farmers market around the area. Good vibes and that air of mom and pop shop that you feel like supporting every time you are in the area. No people with laptops and possibility of have real conversations smelling the aromas of rich coffee.
google avatar

Yelp
Great little coffee shop with indoor and outdoor seating. Parking is along the street. The coffee here is super well made and the chai is house made! There's even WiFi at the cafe.

Yelp
I have been a fan since they opened. Gladys and her team are knowledge, friendly, and offer great products. I have used her many times for catering for our school events, getting the 5 gallon Togo with all of the necessities and it is a seamless process and always ready when I need it. She makes it easy to support this local business and I hope you discover this gem too!

Yelp
The Kakawa Latte is amazing. The only downside is that some of the staff don't make it well. Whom I assume is the proprietor made it yummy. Her helper bee not so much. Overall excellent coffee and treats!
google avatar

Mido A.

Yelp
I'm lowkey obsessed with Kakawa. It's this small, super charming coffee spot that just gets it. Their Aleppo latte is hands down my favorite--rose petals, pistachios, that subtle spice... it's honestly magic in a cup. Everything feels intentional there, from the drinks to the chill vibe inside. You can tell it's made with love. Definitely my go-to spot when I want something different (and really good).
google avatar

Amelia H.

Yelp
The Kakawa latte is genuinely one of the best coffees I've ever had. Not too sweet- just the perfect amount of spice, sweetness, and good coffee flavor. The broccoli cheddar quiche was also perfectly cooked and flavorful. Love the little top of Aleppo pepper! The space is small but the vibes are immaculate. The staff were also wonderfully friendly and patient. It's a perfect little stop on a sunny morning! Do yourself a favor and grab a treat and head to the ocean for a perfect Saturday morning!

Yelp
Still the best in town. Service, coffee shop and menu. Can't be beat. This is our coffee shop equivalent of a cheers bar.

Yelp
Today a friend and I visited Kakawa coffee in Point Loma! Cozy spot with an awesome menu. I loved the Chai latte, everything was freshly ground for my drink! Highly recommend.

Yelp
My favorite coffee place in Point Loma! The Mayan mocha is my favorite mocha I've ever had! Has a great spice to it and not too sweet which I love. Service is always friendly and quick.

Yelp

Yelp
New year, new reviews! The coffee was good and they had pretty good-looking pastries. The service was great. A big improvement since the last time we visited this spot.

Yelp
I recently checked out a coffee shop in point loma and was blown away by the high-quality coffee, unique flawors, and delicious breakfast and sweet options - definitely a mist-try!

Sarab A.

Yelp
This is the BEST and cutest coffee shop, the owner is very welcoming and pleasant and their Arabian Mocha is so very good. Give them a try you will not get disappointed
google avatar

Veronica P.

Yelp
Stopped in to this amazing coffee shop and wanted to try something new. I saw they offered a "Arabian mocha", I've never seen that anywhere. I ordered it and it is delicious!! I recommend it iced and we got to meet Glaydis who was working there and she is so kind and friendly
google avatar

Dan S.

Yelp
Mean owner or server almost refused to serve my family. Coffee didn't make up for it either. Really bad vibes here. Plenty of other good coffee in the area.
google avatar

Laura A.

Yelp
Best chai I've ever had! Every time my mom comes to visit she always needs to come here and get some chai!
google avatar

Melissa F.

Yelp
Love this place and come here all the time! Kakawa has drinks I can't find anywhere else with such interesting flavors blending South American & Middle Eastern flavor profiles. Try the Arabian Mocha! I also love their Chai--it's the perfect balance of sweet and spicy. Plus the owner, Gladys, is great!
google avatar

Sean C.

Yelp
The Mexican mocha is really good, it's really good. But, if this is a size MEDIUM, what's a small?

Yelp
I have been to this coffee shop about 12 times or so as it is conveniently located in my neighborhood and near some spots where I run errands. I was excited to try a small, local coffee shop. I return again and again hoping that I will like it better. They post beautiful pictures of pastries and drinks on social media, but whenever I come in, I think, "Where are those?". I've never had a bad experience, but never great. My go-to is an iced coffee. I sometimes try fancier drinks and lattes around the holidays. There, they don't have non-fat milk, but they do have 2% which is acceptable, though I prefer nonfat. I have gotten a couple of pastries, but they are just located unceremoniously in a plastic case, not looking terribly appetizing. The few pastries I have had are not bad, but nothing special. The iced coffees are fine, though a bit on the pricey side as compared to other coffee in the area. I think that the main thing is that the people running the place never seems very interested. When I ask about products, I only get short answers and never recommendations. They are never rude, but often don't look up from their conversations much other than to ring me up. On the bright side, street parking is pretty easy and they get drinks to you quickly. In November, I tried the pumpkin spice cold brew, which I really enjoyed because it had a strong pumpkin flavor with none of the sweetness that I don't care for. All in all, it is a good place to stop by for a quick dink, but I wouldn't expect any more than that.

Yelp
My wife and I stopped by for two coffees and two pastries. My wife ordered an oat milk latte and I a regular drip coffee, both were great. We also ordered a blueberry scone and a Nutella croissant. They offered to heat the pastries and obviously that made them even more wonderful. I highly recommend this neighborhood coffee shop, and based on the consistent customers, the locals love it also.
google avatar

Samantha G.

Yelp
The service was amazing! Food and drinks were tasty and the taste of the coffee was so smooth which is hard to find. The chai latte was also so rich and smooth. Highly recommend

Jason E.

Yelp
Owners are rude and unprofessional. They will yell and argue with people in front of their customers and bring the whole mood down. You're a business owner, have some decorum. Embarrassing to say the least.
google avatar

Alisa J.

Yelp
Great coffee shop with street parking that isn't too hard to find. The aesthetic in this shop is great and the people are so friendly! We had the avocado toast with the egg toast. This is one order and not two separate items. We also had the quiche which was delicious and very well made. The pastries were also great. We had the scone and gluten free muffin. The muffin was so good and did not seem like a gluten free pastry at all. Love this place and would go back. We also had the Mexican mocha and Kakawa latte. My Mexican mocha was similar to he latte because I had coconut milk. The mocha was so spicy and delicious.

Bridget K.

Yelp
I always appreciate a Good coffee, so I was delighted when this place opened in my hood. My Americano is always a full bodied great cup of coffee. I'm not sure where Gladys gets the pastries but they are a treat. There's are even gluten free for my friend. I can rely on Kakawa as a good meet up for friends because of the quality, and the vibe. Nice people that own it, but also the fellow customers.

Yelp
What a gem in San Diego! My boyfriend and I stumbled upon this place on Yelp. We wanted to check it out and it did not disappoint! The owners were so friendly and welcoming. The vibe was very cute as well. If I was a student here I would totally study here (there were a lot of charging ports & tables) We ordered the iced chai latte & their signature Kakawa latte & they were so good! My bf is a big chai lover & he said the chair was delicious. The kakawa I would describe as roasted coffee that isn't dark/bitter either. I think it is the perfect amount of coffee favor. Definitely should check it out. The owner mentioned that on their instagram they posts about events they hosts there too!
google avatar

Iris W.

Yelp
Was in the neighborhood and needed a caffeine boost. So I decided to give this place a try because of the 4.7 stars great Yelp reviews. Turned out that the stars on Yelp could be deceptive. First, drinks were terrible. I got 2 lattes (1 iced & 1 hot). The iced latte was way overextracted and so bitter that anyone who has taste buds would not enjoy it. Ended up having to toss it after a few sips. The hot one was mid with nothing special. Additionally, the attitude from the staff was extremely unwelcoming. There was no smile/thank you since the second that I stepped into the store. Maybe the staff were having a bad day... Would really like to support neighborhood businesses. But I'd definitely not give this place a second try.

Yelp
Perfect place to enjoy a good cup of coffee on a Saturday morning. This could be my new coffee date cafe spot.
google avatar

Yelp
Super cute coffee spot in OB with solid and unique drinks and tasty snacks too! Friendly and fast staff. Would definitely come back/recommend :)

Lauren W.

Yelp
Great drinks! The matcha is hard to beat and I come here every week for whole beans, delicious!
google avatar

Devi K.

Yelp
Kakawa coffee is amazing, I've gotten their dirty chai and chai latte and both have been delicious! Today I came here to get some chai early in the morning and it was made in like 30 seconds, it was so quick! Their service is amazing and the kind people who work here have been so kind! The coffee shop itself is beautiful and it has a comfy feeling to it, it is well decorated and just amazing in general! Thank you Kakawa coffee, you are a great contribution to Point Loma and I will be coming back every time I'm here!

Julie T.

Yelp
would not recommend this place at all. the manager is extremely rude and unprofessional. there is a common theme of picking and choosing how to treat different customers. the ambiance is extremely unsettling as well.
google avatar

Sabrina E.

Yelp
First time at this quaint little coffee shop. We got to meet Gladys the owner, she was wonderful. Made some suggestions to us I wouldn't normally try but did. We got a chai tea and a Matcha coconut latte iced both were absolutely fabulous. She was very kind and making her suggestions the coffee shop had indoor and outdoor seating. If you're hungry, get their avocado toast, it was cooked to perfection on everything bread with sliced hard boiled eggs and avocado so fresh!
google avatar

Victoria L.

Yelp
Smaller menu but really cute small local business. Theres a couple indoor spots to sit at and There's two outdoor tables and a bench. I alwaaays look for outdoor seating because I have pups Parking could be difficult but during the day street parking is easy peasy. I got the dirty chai and had asked if it would be too sweet. It wasn't!
google avatar

Sahar N.

Yelp
Safe to say I'm a iced almond milk latte snob. I was visiting from San Francisco and had to get my fix. A friend suggested meeting at this spot in the AM and I'm so glad he did! The latte was delicious, creamy and refreshing. The spot is also super lovely with all the plants and simplistic decor. It's snug in there so there's definitely limited seating. A few pastries and loads of fantastic customer service. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Matt R.

Yelp
Great little shop that has become part of our weekend morning routine. Custom, tasty speciality drinks and coffees. Friendly and engaging staff
google avatar

Miranda F.

Yelp
I love this local coffee shop. They have the best kakawa latte and the staff is really friendly and nice. It's dog friendly and i have never had a bad coffee. I highly recommend this place!
google avatar

Arnold T.

Yelp
Small coffee shop but has unique coffee offerings. I had the kakawa latte - has espresso, coconut and dark chocolate. Pretty good. We also had the Arabian mocha - has espresso and cardamom. Also delicious.

Yelp
My wife and I were staying in Point Loma, so we stopped by Kakawa Coffee for a drip coffee and a latte. I've been to enough coffee shops to almost immediately tell the quality of the coffee from the moment I walk in. There are small tells: the syrup brand, the smell, and the way the espresso machine is maintained. When I walked in, I immediately felt this coffee was not 4.7 stars (maybe 3 stars if I'm being generous), but who am I to argue with nearly 200 reviews? So, we ordered a coffee and a latte. I should have trusted my gut. The drip coffee was drinkable (not great), but the latte was awful. There was no art or care in the quality of the shot or really anything else. My wife had to throw it out (I'm not sure she's ever done that before). The service was fast, but with a latte, that's often a bad sign. If they're handing you a latte in under a minute, that's not what you want to see. The best lattes take a few minutes to get the right amount of beans, pull a shot, and steam the milk. You don't want to rush the process. We didn't try the nitro cold brew or any of the cold drinks, maybe that's where they shine.
