Google
Kaku’s got the best Poke in Michigan My favorite are the spicy tuna with ahi tuna and hijiki seaweed added!!! Their spicy mayo sauce and garlic ponzu soy sauce are so good with any bowls. Kaku poke is simple and delicious. My partner says they have the best miso soup too.

Google
The reviews misled me so I’m doing my due diligence. Having lived in LA, I know what good poke bowls are. I spent $15 here for basically a bowl of rice. They really skimp on the fish. The service was awful - it was one younger, very soft spoken gentleman (did not greet you or instruct you on ordering). I ordered on a quiet Wednesday night, there was 1 customer ahead of me, and I waited 30 minutes for my bowl. I had to walk back to my parking to pay the meter. I get it - times are tough, and they are understaffed, but this is still pretty unacceptable as far as food service goes. If the poke was better, I wouldn’t have written this review, but if you’re going to charge high prices, provide a terrible product, and subpar service, the review is warranted. Do better.

Google
Very fresh sushi at very reasonable prices, you really can’t beat that combo. Their traditional California and spicy crab rolls keep me coming back for more. It’s a winner in my book - 5 stars all the way.

Google
My FAVORITE place to eat!! THE most tasty and on top healthy option in Michigan metro area. Taste is sooo goood, ingredients are high quality. I usually have lots of sensibilities since most to go food is very toxic but here is like heaven. The food has never caused me any reaction. Means all is organic (real organic) and the flavor is bliss ✨ PLUS the owner is always kind and very respectful. If you haven't, give it a try and you won't regret.

Google
I had the customizable poke bowl. I asked for a recommendation on sauces from the young man who prepared the fish and it was delicious. He mixed a few different sauces and it was so good. I’m from Hawaii and have also lived in Japan for several years. I’ve eaten a lot of poke bowls on the mainland and this is easily one of the best poke bowls I’ve had outside of Hawaii. The fish tasted fresh and I love that they use vinegar sushi rice in the bowl instead of plain rice.

Google
Great option for Poke Bowl. Ingredients were fresh and service was friendly and fast. Plenty of space to eat on site.

Delicious sushi grade fish & ingredients. Great customer service. Highly recommend the sushi and poke bowls .

Google
New spot I tried while in Michigan. Great staff. I had the make it your own option. White rice, shrimp, barbecue soy sauce, cucumbers, onions, edamame, and crab salad. Delicious. Highly recommend.

Yelp
let me just begin with the absolutely terrible customer service. the man who was helping me took an hour to prepare the food when the place wasn't even busy at all. When I asked for my miso soup which I did not receive initially, he shot me with a dirty look and threw it on the table when he was done. Whatever employee was at work at noon on january 2nd needs to reconsider his duties and should be fired.

Yelp
Left a three star review when it first opened but wanted to go in an update that years later- I am still coming to this place and love it each time. It's become a regular stop in our household and we all find ourselves craving it. Over the years it's been open I've known several of my classmates have been employed here and they always do a good job. Since my first visit years ago I have only carried out but the inside is always clean just small to sit down and eat. We love getting carry out here and frequent this business often. I definitely recommend it!

Yelp
I would just like to start this review off by saying I've been coming here for 6+ years and I've always loved this poke place but too many changes have been made. Over the years the prices have went up and the portion sizes have gone down. Large bowl used to be 4 scoops it's now 3. I come only for poke because I don't care for the sushi. They do everything online now which I don't like. If you go in to get a bowl you have to order ahead online. They charge extra after 3 toppings I get my bowls with cucumbers, onions, jalepenos, and scallions.I have to pay extra for scallions. I always get my sauces on the side. The sauce is what makes this poke place stand out from the rest, Today I placed a carry out order it was made wrong so I had to park and walk 3 blocks to get my bowl fixed. As I said I get my sauces on the side instead of mixed in my bowl. I asked for more sauce and the employee told me that it would be an extra charge because this is the new sauce portion. This being the sauce portion for a large bowl which is $20 is insane!!!!! It's not even filled half way up so wanting an extra charge for this is diabolical. The service and portions have went down and I hate that everything is online so I will be finding another poke place.

Yelp
My wife grabbed 4 bowls for our family and they were outstanding. A Poke Poke opened up near us and it fails to come close in the quality that we received from Kaku.

Steve S.

Yelp
A female worker with beanie lacked customer service I overheard her cursing in the back while she was getting me an avocado for my bowl. Found nails to be uncleanly Sushi was good though.

Nicole E.

Yelp
The first and most frustrating part is finding a parking spot on this unbelievably frigid day. There's no parking except about two blocks away. Guy behind the counter is working by himself, that's that's OK since there's nobody really here. I got the large bowl, build my own. Give me four scoops of protein. I got the crab salad and tofu, two scoops of each. I added arugula, onions, edamame, crispy garlic, grape eggs, quinoa, she talking mushrooms, cucumbers, scallions and red onions. I added the Sriracha citrus dressing. I got brown rice as my base. I feel like there should be some pepper and maybe carrots as other possible options. This bowl is not cheap and even the large ball is not much bigger than us mobile. The small bowl only gives you two scoops of protein. That's an interesting combination in the mall. It's different, not sure if I love it though. I have had better Poke bowls at the Troy one, this one seems bland and boring and lack luster. Sauces are just average. Nothing has much kick or umph to it at all. Some kimchi or cabbage would be a good add too. I am done with trying it, saving the rest for my husband. Can't eat anymore. It needs more flavor for me to eat it all, it's lacking.

Andrea R.

Yelp
I picked up lunch here for my family since it was conveniently located down the street from the Daxton Hotel. I was the only person there so they were able to make our poke bowls and California rolls pretty quickly. The poke bowl was tasty. I just went w/ the standard tuna bowl and added salad since I"m trying to avoid carbs, but my husband enjoyed his with rice. My kids LOVED the California rolls and my daughter asked if we could eat there again during our short trip in town. Sadly we didn't have time this time, but will have to stop by during our next trip. Tasty, convenient and fast...I'm a fan!

Yelp
Last time going to Kaku unfortunately. This is a great poke place; however, so much has changed (I have been going to both locations since they opened). First, prices increased and ingredients were removed from the menu but I continued to order weekly from them. Now, prices have continuously increased and they are giving smaller portions. For example, the large bowl used to be 4 scoops of fish, now it is 3 (for the same, increased price). Every additional topping (avocado, seaweed salad, etc.) has increased as well. Pineapple used to be included in the set bowl price, but now it is an additional price. It is just absolutely not worth going here anymore knowing how it used to be. I have also had issues of being overcharged for toppings. I purchased the seaweed salad to be on my bowl, but I have been charged for a whole side ($1.50 vs $3.50). It is the little things like this that are the reason I will no longer be returning. Wish things did not change this much, but it is what it is.

Yelp
We have been awaiting this grand opening with anticipation and Kaku Sushi and Poke, did not disappoint. The new space has been renovated from drab to clean and modern. They are on Old Woodward between Leo's Coney Island and Eli Tea. The poke bowls are just as fresh and plentiful as the Bloomfield location. I love that the staff is so friendly, accommodating and knowledgeable. It looks like there is an expanded sushi menu but the best part is that prices have remained the same (which is surprising since I am sure downtown Birmingham rent is much higher). I know I am going to be a frequent visitor at both locations.

Dawn V.

Yelp
We have been frequent customers and admirers of the first Kaku at Telegraph and Long Lake so it's an added bonus to have Their fantastic poke in Birmingham as well. Everything here is always fresh/highest quality and you will never get tired of poke with so many options. If you are new to DIY poke, it works like Chipotle: Choose your base: rice, white or brown, or salad (or mixed) Choose your protein: tuna, salmon, spicy tuna, tofu, etc (or mixed) And add toppings and sauce as you go... If it's your first time, you can't go wrong with white rice, tuna, ponzu... The man that owns Kaku is really a great guy. Happy to see so much success for him!

Yelp
This place was rated 4.6 stars so you would assume good service. But unfortunately the service went downhill with covid. The place is dirty and the tables are not clean. I asked the waiter to clean our table. He grabbed a wet rag from a bucket on the floor and placed it in my hand. Never have I seen such bad service in my life. Food needless to say was horrible. I walked out with abdominal pain.

Julie B.

Yelp
Sushi was good. The wasabi was weak... I get spicier wasabi with the sushi at Kroger. The price is fair. Next time I'll try the poke and update my review at that time. The staff was nice and friendly.

Adam J.

Yelp
This would be one star but since I didn't have the poke, I'll keep it at two. I know people come here for the poke, but why have sushi rolls on the menu if it's terrible? This were the worst sushi rolls I've ever had and I felt cheated after seeing them and after eating them. Again, why are there sushi rolls on the menu? The nigiri is fine because that's hard to mess up (it's sushi on rice), but the rolls may be 90% rice, at least the three rolls we got. The sushi was minimal in each one and despite getting three rolls which should've been much different, they were all basically the same. I don't know. My picture says it all. There's rice inside and nothing else is visible. They also don't include wasabi or ginger. Maybe their poke is good, but they stole my money and gave me a bunch of rice so I probably won't try it.

Sandy L.

Yelp
Came here out of the blue with my boyfriend. Cute little spot. The price is a little higher compared to other poke places we went to. We both ordered something that was already premade list. I think I ordered the salmon.. and my boyfriend ordered the ..

Karolina K.

Yelp
Wasn't blown away. Don't get me wrong, the food was good, but based on all other reviews I was expecting something to "wow" me. The service was very good, as a first timers we were a little confused but the guy working there was very kind and explained all options, and even gave some samples of the sauces. We got the Ahi Tuna bowl and a small pick your own. The Ahi tuna was very good, the fish was fresh and everything combined gave a nice flavor. My bowl on the other side was kind of blind, and despite adding many items I was still eating basically rice. Needed to ask for extra sauce to add some flavor. Also, I added a seaweed salad for extra $1 since I love it, and was totally disappointed with the flavor. Maybe that wasn't the right combination, not sure, but both of us kind of liked the food, there was nothing bad about it, but not to the point that we would like to come back. Especially for the price you pay.

Rochelle D.

Yelp
Pretty good poke spot. I love that it's so close to us. Fish was fresh, sauces and other condiments were good, staff was friendly, and the place is pretty clean. I'm giving it only a 4 stars cause I felt like they were a bit stingy on the amount of fish per scoops. Maybe next time I'll get the large just to get more fish, probably gonna come and trying the sushi next. Pick your own poke: small comes with 2 scoops and large comes with 4.

Arisa T.

Yelp
High quality and fresh. Excellent place to grab a quick bite to eat. Highly recommend.

Yelp
I am so sad that Kaku has just gradually gone downhill over the last 6 months - 1 year. My office used to order at least once a week. We order through grub hub and Kaku is incapable of getting any order 100% right. So we pay more money to the restaurant and all the grub hub fees to get less that sub-par bowls. They took the mushrooms off the menu. They changed their spicy tuna from tuna chunks to mushy tuna paste (this actually might be salmon I'm not even sure). I asked for extra sauce on the side and this bowl is drowning in sauce. It's one big bowl of mush. My friend asked for and paid for double protein and did not get a double portion by any means. And this is just our most recent order. They are all equally messed up in one way or another. I don't ever write reviews. I'm just tired of "seeing if they've improved", just to be disappointed every single time. We don't like the other Poke option in Troy either. It's like we're out of good Poke options here. So frustrating. Probably won't have these issues if you go inside and order but the parking situation there is a joke.

Beth B.

Yelp
Fantastic poke place in Birmingham. We stopped for lunch for a couple of poke bowls and some miso soup. I ordered a build your own bowl, size small and it was a very generous portion. I decided to run with the spicy tuna, white rice, Eel sauce, cucumbers, jalapeño, seaweed, and Krab and it was outstanding. My hubby got something similar with Ahi Tuna and cleaned the bowl! We'll be frequenting this place for sure!

Ajane H.

Yelp
best ever i order the same thing everytime i go and it's amazing every time. the garlic mayo sauce is phenomenal

Sarah M.

Yelp
I've gone back a few times since my last visit and they've always been very consistent in giving me good quality food! I still absolutely love the shrimp and scallop bowl so I get it every time I go. The staff are always super efficient and friendly. It is definitely one of my go to places for carry out!

Johnny K.

Yelp
Spicy Tuna Large Bowl with brown rice, jalapeños, cucumbers, edamame, house sauce, spicy mayo, sesame seeds, crab, avocado.

Zach J.

Yelp
Amateur hour over here. Missed 2 ingredients from my online order and did 100% salmon on a salmon/Ahi bowl. Prices are decent but the topping selection is a little light compared to a lot of other poke places.

Christina O.

Yelp
best poke bowls in michigan! this hidden gem is right across the street from lululemon. the bowls are reasonably priced and satisfying with plenty of options for customization. a combination of the ahi tuna and salmon are my favorite. they also have a few rolls that looked tasty but have not tried them yet. the seating area is narrow and a bit limited. we are a huge fan of their poke bowls and have even customized our bowls online for carryout. don't skip out on the crunchy garlic!

Rachel M.

Yelp
Kaku never disappoints. We come here weekly. Their portions are large, their fish is fresh, their flavor and textures are always on point. They're never stingy with the ingredients and the customer service is always great.

Libby T.

Yelp
Just as good as the Bloomfield location, which I've been obsessed with for awhile. The best poke bowls I've had in Michigan. Fresh and delicious food, great counter service, and fair prices make this my favorite quick lunch or takeout place.

J K.

Yelp
The flavors are there! It's brand new and people were still being trained. My girlfriend's poke bowl had like no sauce, while my identical order was drenched. Just... Too strong, too much sauce. But the fish is fresh and so are all the other ingredients. Will be back and will update rating as time goes. I don't doubt that it'll be better as regular employees get the gist of things. Def. want to try the sushi next time too

Jeff M.

Yelp
KaKu is wonderfully unpretentious and smartly designed. My partner had Poké which she loved and I had an assortment of sushimi. I was really impressed by the quality and cut of the sashimi. Ka Ku, the proprietor, served us and told us that he has been working with sushi in Tokyo for 25 years. His skills were evident in the food. Highly recommend this place!

Sarah C.

Yelp
What an amazing find! Where has this been all my life. Forgot how much I like poke. The food did not disappoint. So simple but tasty and presentation was amazing too. The place was very good atmosphere with friendly staff. WiFi worked great but music was too loud for my preference. Hard to hear yourself think at all. Luckily there's a super cute tea shop nearby where you can get delicious bubble tea

Raghad B.

Yelp
Ok, let me start this off by saying that I actually quite enjoyed my Poke bowl, so the three stars is only because of the service that was given. The girl behind the corner when we entered the restaurant with my coworkers was slower than molasses in January. No joke, if the building was on fire I'm not sure she would make it out with how slow she moves. I damn near had my next birthday waiting for her to finish. Not only did she have no sense of urgency but it was obvious she doesn't take any initiative either. I can tell this because when she used the last three cucumbers on my bowl, instead of getting out a new container [which was already ready in the fridge] she called it good. I figured they must not have any more than that until my coworker asked if they had more and she pulled it out. She stared at me blankly when I was starting my bowl & though it was my first time there she did nothing to let me know what was included in the bowl or what they had. Not all the items were labeled and I didn't even want to ask her what some things were because every time I did, she looked extremely burdened. I truly feel bad for the guy working with her as that woman could make a nun swear. Anyway, next time I go, if she's working I'm asking for ANYONE else..... or if I can just make it myself cause I only get 30 minutes and spent pretty much all of that waiting for her. if youre reading this--girl with pink beanie & baby blue sweatshirt--know that I hate you. I wish you well. But I hate you.

Joshua N.

Yelp
Really delicious. Such a departure from normal fare. I got the Ahi Tuna bowl. It's was delightful. The fish seemed very fresh. Everything was handcrafted and fresh. Great flavor. The staff was great. It's a pretty cool place to relax and get a little bit of time to eat. I enjoyed my meal and would be happy to stop back again.

Maddy M.

Yelp
Bruh. AMAZING. I am obsessed with sushi, and as an Asian its really hard to find restaurants in Amerca that have good Japanese food. This place is the exception. Service is so friendly, not to mention the food is just phenomenal. All the sushi is so good, poke bowls just as amazing. This is a hidden gem of Birmingham and I highly recommend. Right by Eli Tea, also a great place by the way. 11/10, never gonna stop going there.

Ryan G.

Yelp
Food was yummy and he service was great by a fine young man named Harold and Jack Lovell but the food gave me diarrhea

Laurie M.

Yelp
Love that customizable poke bowls are easier to find now, and Kaku doesn't disappoint. Downtown Birmingham is always cute, but does make it a little more difficult to get food to go. Great variety of bases and toppings to go with the fish. I agree with another reviewer that the scoops of fish are a bit on the smaller side, but they're fresh for sure! Added the seaweed salad to my bowl for $1 which was definitely worth it, as the helping was generous. Would definitely come back the next time I have a hankering for Poké!

Sonia J.

Yelp
Came to get a poke bowl and ended up waiting for 30 mins for my order. The server skipped my order because a larger group came in, even though I had ordered first. They didn't even try to compensate for the delay. Food is alright but service here is bad. I don't recommend this place.

Tara P.

Yelp
I stopped in here with my aunties on a whim after one asked "what's poke?" and I knew she'd love it. I was right, and thanks to this place she said it "piqued" her interest. They have something for everyone and the service is fantastic. Food is fresh and flavorful and the menu is well-done.

Delaney L.

Yelp
Found this place on yelp and decided to give it a try. I love sushi but I had never tried poke bowls and it was amazing!! The worker recommended the spicy tuna bowl and i added avocado and seaweed salad. Super good I would highly recommend it!

Tracey J.

Yelp
Really great poke bowls! Huge portions and the fish was very fresh. I had the salmon and my husband had the tuna, both were delicious. We also ordered the miso soup which was fine, nothing special. Highly recommend!

Ben K.

Yelp
Really good sushi! Went for the spicy tuna and spicy salmon rolls. It was really good! Pretty reasonable for Birmingham. It's a small spot, but clean and well done. Lots of small tables to eat at inside the restaurant. I would definitely come back and have more sushi. The poke bowls look like chipotle style options, so I would like to give that a shot also next time!

kayla k.

Yelp
baes tbh i come here all the time very flavorful and fresh and good i love you best poke ever and i eat a lot of poke. i drive 40 minutes out of the way just so i can get this poke bowl

Nanci M.

Yelp
We love this small well run sushi restaurant. I have eaten sushi all over the world and this one is very fresh!

M D.

Yelp
For one of the only places for sushi in Birmingham, I would say this is like an 8/10. For the price it is decent and is usually pretty fresh and yummy. On the other hand, the portions are just so small and the menu is so limited. I wish they expanded a bit more and added some more appetizers, like ginger salads.

Jai E.

Yelp
This place is wonderful. The owner is this super chill Japanese guy. The fish was very fresh and I like that the poke tasted very Japanese? Like they have more traditional sushi ingredients over Hawaiian. You can really tell that the guy really cares about product quality.

Valerie B.

Yelp
I don't know why this place was so empty on a Friday night. The food was delicious!! I had the spicy tuna, perfectly spicy, filling, and really healthy. I will be back :)

Wenyi C.

Yelp
Fresh sushi food, quick services. The price is higher than normal sushi restaurant. I recommend their yellowtail sushi roll

Rhonda M.

Yelp
Super fresh sushi ! Spicy tuna, spicy salmon .shrimp California all very fresh and yummy

Sarah B.

Yelp
Their Poke Bowls always taste great and always taste fresh! The service is also great, me and my husband are always greeted, regardless of how busy they are. The young man that helped us this past Saturday was named Benjamin, he was extremely nice and helpful from beginning to end, and truly wanted us to have a good experience. I definitely recommend this place if you want a quick spot to eat!

Jillian L.

Yelp
Birmingham needed a Poke place like this. Their food is super fresh. Its a great lunch spot for all the people working in the area because its relatively healthy and quick. I would definitely recommend to anyone who likes Poke or sushi.

Rachel M.

Yelp
A new favorite! Delicious, fresh, quality ingredients. Super easy to order, loads of fun options, and a friendly staff.
