The Best Coffee Shops in Portland

"Fourth wave coffee’s come to Portland. The three founders at Kalesa Coffee are proud stewards of that movement. These Californians moved to Portland after working in majority-white staffed and owned cafes. At their handsome wood-laden Gotham Building cafe it’s all about highlighting Asian American flavors: coconut cold brew with ube whip, mango calamansi in a chamoy-rimmed glass, and their own roasted coffee with a house blend centering beans from the Philippines." - Paolo Bicchieri

Google
Small spot for coffee to shine. The coffee and variety of baked good is great. The staff is always friendly and will make accommodations to dietary or other needs. I have mostly stayed on the classic coffee drinks but had friends with me who had other items loved it as having the right amount of sweet.

Google
Incredible Ube latte here! I stopped in from the really good reviews online. The little cafe stand is snuggled inside of an office building so not really seen from the outside. The barista was so so nice to us and made two incredible Ube lattes. Can’t wait to come back when I’m in Portland! Ps - love the Blonde poster!

Google
Coconut Cold Brew Ube Latte was so fire. Visiting from out of town and our guy hooked us up with the best food recs and was so nice and friendly. Definitely recommend to anyone for a quick stop before you go hiking!

Google
Pandan soda ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - not too sweet but sweet still, I loved it - perfect refreshing still - almost coconut? Cold brew with ube foam ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - I love the foam - something was a little too sugary for me, maybe I wouldn't ask for milk? I'd ask for it black Cookie ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - chewy - soft - lots of chocolate - has weird after taste Ube crinkle ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - not too sweet - very ube

Google
I found this coffee shop while looking for coffee close by. It was a little hard to find, as you have to go through a gate, enter the building and then find the cafe. This is a cute, very small shop. The barista was very friendly and the coffee was really good. Highly recommend

Google
Traveled to Portland for a family wedding and decided to venture out and try some Filipino coffee! So happy to have come to Kalesa and met Tim who is one of the owners! He was super friendly and welcoming. The coffee was phenomenal and the Ube/pandan cookies were delicious! Thank you Tim for giving us some suggestions of places to eat around the city! It was an amazing trip and so happy to come by your coffee shop!😁

Google
First time in Portland and found this gem of a coffee shop! Tried the ube latte—highly recommend. Super chill environment, great vibes, and the guy working was super friendly.

Google
Double shot of espresso here carries good intensity and skews less floral than your typical Portland roaster. Decent vibes. Looks a community spot where clientele know each other. Nice!

Yelp
Coffee roasted with care, drinks made with exceptional attention to detail, and a feel good team that wants to put a smile on your face. Seems like it is a passion project, so the team is small and the quality remains high. It was located inside a larger office(?) building called the Gotham, really nice inside. Grab and go is your best option (limited seating), or enjoy it outside in the shade! Nice music, nice light ambient vibes. Specialty lattes that don't have overpowering syrups and sweeteners - and for a reason, the coffee is roasted to perfection. Thx to the team (see yall again Tim and Keanu - love from SoCal)!

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem! I had a job interview and saw this coffee shop nearby and had to check it out. It is a small space with barely any seating so I wouldn't recommend studying here but they do have free wifi! The service and workers are great! For the coconut cold brew, I could barely taste the coffee, but it was still very refreshing and the ube whip was beautiful. I could see myself going here again!

Yelp
The coolest little coffee shop. Well designed branding, amazing coffee, and frequent food pop ups! They are super friendly, which is the perfect way to start the day. I got an Ube whipped cream cold brew and it was soo good. Hint of coconut, whipped cream wasn't sweet just pure Ube flavor with delicious cold brew. I was lucky enough to go to Laminate pastry's last pop up. I got two of everything and it was all so incredible. Bacon cheese pretzel, guava pastry, kougin amoun, and little cumin shortbread with milk chocolate filling.

Kristina R.

Yelp
What a refreshing and beautiful coffee shop! I got to chat with the owner who is bringing a twist to coffee with unique flavors. Seriously so delicious I got the coconut cold brew and with onea whip cream. It was heavenly! Go hit this place up if you like great coffee and kind service and great flavors!

Yelp
Mm I have mixed feelings because I really wanted to like this place but I don't think it met my expectations ): I was intrigued by their pandan whip, which is why we made our way here but unfortunately, I don't think it was worth it. I ordered a latte with pandan syrup + pandan whip on top. The coffee taste light and sour so the overall drink was not very pleasant. The pandan whip had a very faint pandan flavor, which wasn't bad but it wasn't special. That being said I probably wouldn't visit again but glad I tried it! The shop is located in an odd spot, I'm not even sure how to describe it. Seating is limited and is more of a grab and go kind of vibe.

Yelp
My husband found out about this place from a friend at Magna Kubo and he happens to work nearby the location so he was able to get drinks on a solo trip and he insisted that I give it a try. So we visited together on a Saturday afternoon. When we walked in the vibe was lively. It's a small place but every seat was taken which I took as a good sign, friends talking, laughing and enjoying coffee together. We reviewed the menu and ordered 3 drinks (see photos), one hot, two iced and each was both delicious and beautiful. Service was outstanding, super personable and friendly. Highly recommended! They also have rotating pastries which I'm looking forward to trying on my next visit.

Yelp
This place had great drinks and the barista was extremely pleasant to talk to, I will definitely be returning.

Yelp
Friendly staff, great drinks! It is located in a shared building and occupying a corner. There are only 3 seats, so it may not be the best place to hang out / study / work for long. My group ordered coconut cold brew with ube whip, and I ordered honey ginger latte with pandan whip. Both are excellent. I normally drink decaf because of a health issue, but they don't have decaf here. No problem, it was still worth it. I am always on the lookout for southeast asian coffee / dessert places, I am glad we have more and more of them in Portland.

Yelp
Filipino-owned coffee shop?! SAY LESS. As a fellow Filipina who is relatively new to Portland, I'm always on the hunt for anything and everything PHILIPPINES. TBH, it's just another way of me trying to fill an empty void since I'm a longgg way from home. I learned about Kalesa Coffee from following Magna Kusina on Instagram. My husband and I work remote, so we took our work to Kalesa Coffee for a day. It's a cozy little spot tucked in the corner of the GOTHAM BUILDING. Lots of STREET PARKING available. Fortunately, we got there early enough to snag a few seats (there are 3 small tables with 2 seats each). There are some outdoor seating as well, but we needed plugs for our laptops, so we had to stay inside. I ordered the MANGO MATCHA and my husband ordered the COCONUT COLD BREW with UBE WHIP. The iced mango matcha was a familiar taste, but a unique one. I can't seem to pinpoint exactly what was in the mango matcha, but it sure brought me back home to the islands. I had a sip of my husband's coconut cold brew with ube whip. I especially loved the ube whip - wish I had more of that! I am curious to try the rest of the drinks on the menu and to also try one of the baked goods. Next time, for sure! Since we got there early, we had the entire place to ourselves. But just a few minutes later, more and more people started coming in! If you have a bunch of meetings for work, I wouldn't advise working out of here as the noise does echo within the building and it gets a bit loud. We personally didn't mind it because we were just in awe of all of the people who came and supported this local business. Keep 'em coming! Thank you so much for having us, Tim! See you next time!

Yelp
My new favorite coffee shop. Plenty of street parking. Inside office building on the bottom floor. Shop on the smaller side with just a few seats inside. There's an area outside that you can congregate, too. But it's all about that Coconut Cold Brew with Ube Whip. I am not usually a cold brew drinker, but this is so good that I am fully onboard with cold brew. Delicious. I'm also a fan of the Pandan Mamon. Spongy, light and not too sweet. Perfect snack along with your cold brew. Staff has been super friendly and I'm glad to see that there's always people here trying it out. Every time I have an out of town guest, I stop in here.

Yelp
My friend and I came here for coffee and a place where we wanted to sit down. The spot was located in an odd place but we were able to find it. There is limited seating. I ordered the Coconut Milk Cold Brew with Ube Whip. It came out just in a couple minutes and the employee helped me out on which drink to get. I was disappointed with the drink because it tasted like watered down coffee and the Ube Whip didn't taste like there was any ube flavoring to it. I tried their Ube crinkle cookie and it was all right. It definitely had more Ube flavoring than the Ube whip. I think my friend got the chai with ube whip. If I'm nearby, I'll come try something different.

Yelp
Their signature coconut cold brew coffee is amazing. One of the best cold brews I've had. The aesthetic of the coffee is very nice as well and the owners were super kind. Highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Yelp
A small coffee shop that is almost hidden if you don't know where to go. They have a small assortment of drinks to choose from that aren't your typical drinks. I really enjoyed the coconut cold brew with ube whip and the honey ginger latte with pandan whip. If you want something refreshing, the mango calamansi is the stick to choose. Overall, it's a pretty cool spot to check out.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a Filipino coffee shop featuring a small menu (which you know it's good because quality over quantity!) It's somewhat hidden - located inside the Gotham Building and it's hard to find where unless you follow the signs. I tried the coconut cold brew with ube whip which looks pretty aesthetic and tastes delicious. The coffee itself has nice cream and coconut flavors, while the ube whip has a subtle ube flavor that is not too sweet, my favorite level of sweetness. Drinks are made to order and delivered quickly. At $6, it is a little bit pricey but it's a nice treat.

Yelp
Support local businesses!!! If ever you're in Portland, checking out, let's say Cathedral Park for a nice stroll and pretty photos, I 100% recommend you get your coffee fix here at Kalesa Coffee! Simple yet exactly what you need to fuel you up for the day! Their location is within the industrial area of Portland but it's not too hard to find; just a few turns here and there and you'll find their white door with their logo on it. I walked in, and immediately noticed the big open space! The cash register is to your right and you'll be greeted by the owner(s) (who btw are from the Bay Area!!). I ordered the coconut cold brew with Ube foam for myself, mango Calamansi for my fiancé and the pandan and coffee mamon. Yes, this is a Filipinx-American coffee biz. I am in love with the ube foam! The right amount of Ube flavor! The coconut cold brew was fresh and much needed. The mango Calamansi was sweet yet tangy. The mamon, omg, who would have thought Coffee and pandan in mamon form would be so goood?!? S/o to the local baker! Overall, I'm glad to see a couple of Bay Area natives making moves and bringing their vision to Portland, OR!

Yelp
Really dope new coffee shop alert! It's a hidden gem in Portland (literally) so you may miss it at first but look out for their sign outside to make sure you don't pass it up. It's a little unsuspecting when you see the outside but when you walk inside it's super sleek & clean space. I'm all for supporting local businesses and even better when they're filipino and mixing flavors I grew up tasting. Simple menu but you have to try the coconut cold brew with ube whip! The whip alone makes me want to come back but the other option of the sweet corn shakerato. I've never heard of that drink before but when the owners were explaining it I was sold for the next time I come visit. They also have some pastries on the side if you want to sit down and enjoy your drink. We tried the pandan mamon which is not your average pastry so worth a try! The owners are really friendly and can't wait to chat them up more on my next visit. Feel free to sit or take your order to go but be sure to explore the back of the space for some items to go!

Yelp
Was so excited to try Kalesa Coffee! Heard about this place while at Eyes Peeled in LA and when I heard "ube topper" I had to go. Owners were so friendly and service was quick. Got the coconut cold brew with ube whip, iced coffee & a custom matcha with ube whip. The coconut cold brew was delish!! With the ube whip it reminded me of an ube macapuno cake from Red Ribbon. Highly recommend! It's located in a nook in the Gotham Building. Street parking was easy to find. Super close to Moda Center & many other PDX spots. Will be back the next time I'm in Portland! :)

Yelp
The best cappuccino in the city. I said what I said. Kalesa recently moved to this location inside the Gotham building and it's a beautiful spot! Street parking very easy. They have signage on Page St. you'll see a gate that looks locked but I promise it's not! Walk in and you'll see the entrance on the right. Once inside the building you'll see a beautiful space with windows and brick on the left and that's where Kalesa is! Don't sleep on the coconut cold brew with ube whip. Perfectly balanced and delicious. The cappuccino is so smooth and the latte is also very good. Not super milky like other lattes I've had. I like that you can actually taste the coffee in all their drinks and love their selection of flavors. They also serve some tasty bites like their mamon and granola with yogurt or milk. We got ours today with yogurt and their delicious papaya coulis. Don't wait, stop by Kalesa today and hang out. Dope space, tasty drinks, and the owners are super friendly and welcoming. Love that a place like this exists in PDX.

Yelp
can't believe I've missed this spot- it's kinda hidden in the back of the Gotham building. Love at first sight. Tim the proprietor is adorable, the coffee is roasted by them and is perfect.

Yelp
It's giving Hood Famous' cousin from Portland (iykyk). We stan any type of Filipino business, but when it comes to a cafe...take my money. When it comes to anything ube + anything coffee, ima have it! The atmosphere is clean and simple. The map will tell you to go down a long suspicious driveway, but trust the process and follow the signs. You will see the warehouse and you're there! The staff was amazing and super welcoming. I brought the whole fam from Seattle and they were super hype. We got the coconut cold brew with ube foam, mango calamansi juice, and a latte. All of the drinks were bangers! The coconut cold brew was really smooth and the flavor was kicking. The ube foam was a nice topper and it was really silky. My grandma got the calamansi juice. If you know anything about Filipino grandmas, they are gonna judge. The drink passed with flying colors. She loved it and it wasn't too sweet. The espresso was smooth and extra points for the cute latte art. Do yourself a favor and support the ates and kuyas of Kalesa. We love to see Filipino Businesses grow. Located in Portland. Private parking lot. Indoor seating available.

Yelp
Located inside of the Gotham building, Kalesa comes from the name given to horse drawn carriages in the Philippines - a nod to the owner's heritage. Open only for two months, they already have a loyal following. A rotating small selection of baked goods from local bakeries features Philippine flavors such as the coffee pandan Mamon. I washed this delicate and soft sponge cake with rich flavors of vanilla and coffee down with a caramel coconut mocha, topped with an Ube whip.

R Gin S.

Yelp
Great space and super good service very cool drinks and very delicious as well. I will comeback
google avatar

Yelp
Finally got to go here as i usually remember about it on Sundays when closed or get coffee before they open. Had an iced latte with ube foam and mamon pastry. Got the wife an iced matcha in which she said is very good and seemed like it could be her favorite in Portland. The iced latte tasted on the stronger side, the ube foam on top is tasty but don't know how much it changes the latte itself. The mamon was very good as well. Barista was super nice and the small is quite small as being kinda part of the office bldg lobby.
google avatar

Yelp
It's quite backwards to go to a tucked away cafe and it be great despite visiting a very popular Portland cafe/working space the day before and it be one of the worst coffees I've had. And just to be specific, Kalesa is that tucked away cafe that ended up being great. A small corner in the Gotham Building that acts as a Filipino style cafe, two incredibly sweet guys curated an interesting menu that packs a caffeinated punch. Strong coffee, good flavor, and not overly sweet. You can't go wrong with pretty much anything you get, but the ube whipped cream is a definite must have that seems to work well with either hot or cold beverages. A comfort menu that can keep you going for sure. An equally great aspect is the presence of genuine smiles, family friendly personalities, and incredible service. Even had a little free bread to try while I'm visiting Portland. If I lived here, this would be a great place to be a regular, especially if you work around here and commute close by!
google avatar

Aj M.

Yelp
The space was smaller than I had realized from pictures, but other than that my partner and I really loved Kalesa. We ordered the coconut cold brew with ube whip and mango calamansi! I'm typically not a fan of cold brew but I really enjoyed the pairing of the ube and coconut. The mango calamansi was super refreshing and so good with the chamoy on the rim! The barista was super friendly and we enjoyed the conversation as we waited for our drinks! I would highly recommend and will be coming back the next time I am in Portland!
google avatar

Jan Michael F.

Yelp
The Pandan Coffee Mamon was so good! It's best paired with their Coconut Cold Brew with Ube Whip! The service was amazing - the barista and the owners were super nice. The ambiance was great. Very chill and relaxing spot. :)

Yelp
Cute hidden Filipino inspired coffee shop. Really unique coffee flavors like I've whip coffee and corn coffee! Really interesting flavors. The only thing is that it does have some odd opening hours and days. The staff was really friendly and gave great recommendations!
google avatar

Maya-Luisa G.

Yelp
Unique drinks & not in the pompous over the top way. Whether it's the cold brew with Ube whipped cream or the refreshing calamansi drink, you won't be disappointed! My son got a steamer with ube whipped cream & was only not smiling in this picture because I made him stop drinking for a second :P

Yelp
literally my new fave coffee shop in portland. it's filipino owned and a hidden GEM! keanu and tim are amazing owners and as soon as you come in, you feel completely welcomed. i've been here every weekend since my first visit 3 weeks ago, and they never miss. they have very unique creations + pastries. the vibes are always spot on. definitely come and give them a try. you truly can't order the wrong thing, but my fave is the coconut cold brew with ube whip!!! life changing!!! pro tip: you'll feel like "where the heck am i going" when you drive in, but they have signs to guide you. it's down a long drive way.
google avatar

Julia E.

Yelp
an instant favorite! love supporting filipino businesses :-)) tim & keanu are the two folks we've met/ interacted with the most and we're always greeted with warmth & familiarity. salamat and see you soon!

Yelp
First time going to this shop and the first thing I felt was just being WELCOMED. This is why I love supporting BIPOC businesses because they are consistently much more welcoming than yt businesses that ignore BIPOC or say/do micro-aggressions that make us feel uncomfortable. The honey ginger latte I got was delicious and warming! They have alternative milks like oat, almond, coconut. They have the usual coffee drinks along with some Filipinx/asian inspired specialties. I hope they get more support and be able to open a larger space one day. The only thing I wish is that they wore masks to protect themselves and the community. Covid-19 is still the third leading cause of death, just FYI! The immunocompromised and disabled community deserve safety too.

Cathryn S.

Yelp
So happy we got to stop here on our last morning in Portland! The employees were the absolute kindest people. Super helpful with ordering and even helped us trying to figure out where to eat for lunch lol. Excellent drinks and baked goods! I had an iced matcha latte with vanilla and my husband had the cold brew with ube whip. We also had the mamon and ube crinkle and everything was delicious! Definitely recommend this place if you're in the area
google avatar

Lindsey P.

Yelp
little hard to find but wow love this cute little coffee shop! i got the matcha with ube whip and it was yummy. coffee is very good as well and the workers are super nice and friendly!

Yelp
Kalesa Coffee is a hidden gem in Portland. It's hidden in an industrial area and totally worth it. The owners are delightful and explained the menu. My family and I had the Pandan mamon, hot chocolate w ube whip, sweet corn Shakerato, and coconut cold brew w ube whip. Everything was so smooth and full of bold flavors. We will definitely be back! So happy to support this local Filipino owned business and hope others do too.

Kaylee H.

Yelp
The coconut cold brew is delicious - as are the pastries! On top of that, Tim, is very friendly! Delicious with good people. Definitely give this place a try! I will be back
google avatar

Yelp
the barista was so so kind and the drinks are AMAZING! the shop is a lil small but definitely worth the stop if you need a coffee to go! it looks like there's a code on the gate & door but it's unlocked. i hope they get the support they deserve... will be back!

Yelp
hidden away in a cozy courtyard, kalesa coffee cafe was the cute, quaint cafe with an urban rustic aesthetic. i loved the greens, the bricks, and the woods! especially the windows which allows sunlight to come through. upon walking in, we were greeted by kind baristas and patrons working on their laptops with a cup of coffee. my friend and i had seen this place on tiktok, and the baristas there told us that their friends were helping them promote their coffee. we love supporting POC owned businesses! we ordered the ube cold foam latte and the matcha mango. i was a bit disappointed with the flavor profile of the ube, as it was more light in flavor and the cold brew wasn't as strong as a coffee taste to what i usually drink. it's completely personal preference. the mango matcha on the other hand was a drink where you could taste both flavors as the same time- i tasted the mango first, then the matcha. i would get this if i were to come back. overall, the baristas truly made this experience a 4/5 stars, otherwise kalesa coffee would have been a 3/5 for me.

Angelica H.

Yelp
I had the best study session this morning thanks to Kalesa Coffee. I walked in and was kindly greeted by the individual working. This was my first time at this shop, so I was wondering what went into the coconut cold brew with ube whip. The worker proceeded to tell me about it but also said any modifications could be made if needed. Thanks for being so helpful! The drink was delicious. It's a quiet, quaint area, so it was perfect spot for a rainy morning. I also saw him tend to a few customers after me, and with each one, he was extremely welcoming. Great experience!

Maria L.

Yelp
I'm from the Bay Area and this was my first time in Portland and Oregon in general. This is one of the best cafes I've ever been to! We ordered the coconut cold brew with ube whip and it was perfect! The ube whip wasn't too sweet and had the perfect hint of ube in it. Tim and Keanu were awesome and so kind (and also from the Bay Area!). Really great vibes all around with these two and they definitely made my sister and I feel at home on our first day in Portland. They also took their time to write down places they recommend visiting in the area. Filipino owned with really great coffee and pastries (from Lamina pastry) as well as staff and owners who really care about what they do and their customers! I would definitely come back and I highly recommend if you're in Portland. Ample street parking. The shop is located inside what seems to be a professional building with other offices, but they have their own corner with tables and windows that lets in natural lighting. They have wifi and it's a great place to study/do work.

Yelp
I will be raving about this place to anyone and everyone I know. But also kinda want to gatekeep because it's just too good!! I got the oat latte with Ube whip and the espresso was perfect. AND THEY DONT CHARGE EXTRA FOR ALTERNATIVE MILKS. The Ube whip was heaven because it had just the right amount of flavor and wasn't too sweet, complimented the coffee well. The pan de sal was super fluffy and delicious. The interior is such a vibe. Shoutout to Tim for being the coolest barista. Have to and will always support my local Filipino businesses in Portland

Emma M.

Yelp
This has amazing coffee and such a welcoming environment! I would go here everyday if I lived in walking distance :) highly recommend this place!
google avatar

Brittney K.

Yelp
Kalesa's coconut cold brew with ube whip is one of the most unique coffee drinks in a city with a coffee shop on every corner. The coconut comes through perfectly without being too sweet, and the texture of the ube whip is divine. I also got the pandan mamon - it was so delicate and delicious I could have eaten 5 more. The space itself is bright and beautiful with the most kind and welcoming customer service. This is the perfect coffee spot for an afternoon hangout with a friend or journaling!

Yelp
Found this little coffee house nearby and stopped in. Such. Good. Coffee. Service was fantastic and so friendly. Highly recommend. We didn't try the fresh pastries but they looked Amazing!

Yelp
Great espresso and super friendly staff! I will be back soon for more pastries! Love the vibe in this cafe.

Yelp
These guys are amazing. The ube whip and coconut cold brew is as delicious as it looks. Their baked goods are incredible, excited to go back and try more. The folks who run this place are incredibly kind, and I want to see them do well! Highly recommended.

Yelp
We absolutely loved Kalesa! We were warmly welcome the moment we stepped through the doors. I personally really liked that the menu wasn't a huge, long intimidating list, and usually this means that what they do offer, they do to perfection. And they do! My husband had a regular drip, I had the coconut cold brew with ube whip, and my daughter had the mango calamansi. We also shared two of the coffee pandan mamon, which was not enough because they were so delicious. The drip was super good, and the coconut cold brew was amazing as was the mango calamansi. I really like the addition of tajin! And the mamons, man oh man. Light, fluffy, buttery, pandan-y. I've found many places don't use enough pandan to actually taste it, but they do. If only I could have one every morning...

Yelp
Amazing coffee and the best service we had anywhere in Portland while visiting. Worth seeking out for sure. I'd spend a lot of money here every month if I lived in Portland.
