Kam Wah Café is a Hong Kong classic that absolutely earns every bit of its reputation. The moment you walk in, you’re greeted by that old-school cha chaan teng energy fast, lively, and full of delicious smells. Their pineapple bun with butter is perfection: warm, crisp on top, soft inside, and the butter melts right into the center like magic. Milk tea is strong and smooth, exactly the way it should be. Service is quick, portions are generous, and everything tastes authentically comforting. A true HK gem five stars without hesitation.

Background information: our group comes from Vancouver (Canada) and Los Angeles (USA). We know our Asian food, and expect nothing but better quality here in Hong Kong. We end up being very disappointed. - Pineapple bun with butter: North America has better pineapple buns than this one! This one is cold, tasteless and does not even melt the butter. 2/5 - Pan fried beef ho fun: Wok hey is there, but beef is not (5 pieces max). The noodles are fine. Overall, the best item of our meal. Small portions. 3/5 - Pasta with shrimp and veggies: A couple pieces of shrimps (again, 5 pieces max) mixed with some pasta in sweet ketchup. Even I can cook better than this. Small portions. 2/5 Overall, 3/5, overpriced at over $60+ a dish. Will not return.

We visited Kam Kam Wah Cafe & Bakery (金華冰廳) during our stay in Hong Kong 🇭🇰. It’s a classic Hong Kong Cha Chaan Teng, and we absolutely loved the egg tarts, pineapple bun (polo bun 菠蘿包), and pork chop noodles. The drinks were spot on—Hong Kong–style coffee and milk tea. Our kid especially enjoyed their ice chocolate drink. A great spot for authentic local flavors, simple yet satisfying!

Local breakfast... intresting... i ordered bun with BBQ pork... the bun just like in Macau... i think better to follow the local taste, Bun with butter only... hope to viist again n try the toast (but my wifey said to try other place 😅). The best restaurant we tried in Hong Kong so far in terms of food! We ordered the Pineapple Bun with butter, Pineapple bun with chicken, French toast with cheese, egg tarts, and iced milk tea. The Pineapple Bun is perfect. I think the french toast is better without the cheese. Not that tourist friendly, it’s a classic Hongkong restaurant where everything is so quick and fast paced. I suggest for your group to check the menu in advance so you won’t get harassed by the waiters lol! You can request for an English menu. It’s best to go there for breakfast (we went there 8:30AM) and there was no wait at all.

Kam Wah is a staple of HK. You must visit if you are in the area. Their pineapple butter bun lives up to its hype! Deeeelicious. They are always packed. Literally sitting with strangers even when you're a party of two sitting in the booth. They WILL squeeze two more people in!

Pretty tasty meal for breakfast. We came on a weekday around 8 AM and there were many locals coming in and out, but we were able to get seated immediately. We ordered the Pineapple buns, Hong Kong milk tea, and egg tarts. The buns were huge and came with butter in them, you can definitely share one with another person if you're not a big eater in the morning. The Hong Kong milk tea is tasty as well, I got the yuenyeung (coffee + milk tea) since I wanted some caffeine. We enjoyed trying the egg tarts as well. Overall, this was a good cha chan tang experience with cheap eats that will fill you up.

PSA allergy alert: HK style French toast has peanut butter in it. Now that you know, the HK style French toast was delicious. And the pineapple bun was the best I've ever had. I thought the butter in the middle was a little extra but it was perfect. Service was standard average what you would expect in HK, no surprises there.

While exploring Mong Kok, I stumbled upon this restaurant and decided to stop in for breakfast. They seated me right away since I was dining solo. Be prepared to share a table with others unless you're in a larger group - it's part of the authentic Hong Kong cafe experience. I ordered their Set C Breakfast, which included a bowl of ramen with an egg, spam, and a sausage and I ordered an iced lemon tea with it. This set menu is only available from 6:30 - 11:30am. The flavors of the ramen were very simple but comforting and nostalgic. As for the iced lemon tea, make sure you use the spoon to smash the lemons in the iced tea for maximum flavor! The staff moves quickly and may seem rushed, so it helps to know what you want to order before they get to you. While they don't speak much English, they do offer English menus and you can just point to the item you want. This is the kind of place where you're in and out pretty quickly. Would definitely return for the classic Hong Kong Cafe experience!

Wowwwww our fav fav place haha. I know this may seem like a "tourist trap" but I was trappppeddd hahaha. It was sooooooo good. Fuuuu the pineapple buns were so good I didn't want to leave to Japan the next day lol. Service was sooo nice. All the aunties in there are really cool. The place is super chill, I like all the vintage milk tea cups they use. Best best pineapple buns I've ever had in my life.

Must try their pineapple bun! The crust was perfectly crispy and it comes with a huge slab of butter in the middle. It also had a slight lemony taste to it. The French toast and the beef chow fun were also pretty good as well but the egg tart was not impressive. Loved the yuen yeung (coffee + tea drink); strong and fragrant. It's a popular cafe so it's likely that you will be assigned to eat at a small booth with strangers but we did notice that it was emptier in the evening so try to come later in the day if you can.

Came here specifically to try the pineapple buns. I went with the butter one, sis ordered the porkchop, and parents ordered the char siu. The buns were fluffy and the tops crispy. The topping didn't fall off when I cut into it or took a bite. Must say, it was a good pineapple bun. I also ordered the instant noodle with the pork and preserved vegetable - tasty and just the right amount for me for breakfast.

Small cafe with very limited seating. Known for their pineapple buns and egg tarts. We ordered their macaroni with ham and milk tea, and was nothing special. The staff kept on bringing over the wrong dishes to our table, and even incorrectly charged us for something. It is more of a tourist trap to me, I've went to similar restaurants around the area that had slightly better seating and comparably tasty.

This is a very well known spot, so they have tons of tourists coming in. Therefore, there are English menus, and lots of the wait staff can speak Mandarin and a bit of English. It is very fast paced and crowded, so don't be surprised if the waitstaff are running around and you end up sharing a table with a stranger! This is pretty normal in popular places around HK! We got the Beef Chow Fun which was super good. A number of people around us were ordering it, so we figured it must be good. Thankfully it was really good! We also got their special at the time, a Chicken Curry Ramen with Cheese dish. This was also super good. Who knew the creamy texture of the cheese would match so well with the curry? This paired with a nice HK milk tea and lemon tea were perfect! We also got the true star of the show, the Bolo You. This is a freshly baked Pineapple Bun with a slip of butter on the inside. This dish is what makes this place so popular too, and it is well deserved! We loved the Bolo You so much, we came back the next day to get it again!

By far one of THE best pineapple buns I've ever had. I was told that Kam Wah is a must when visiting HK, and I'm glad to pass the recommendation along as well. The pineapple bun is so soft and fluffy, but the top is perfectly crisp. Paired with the butter (which is slightly lemony), the cold/warm combo of the bun works SO well together. Their milk tea and lemon tea were also super delicious. Definitely take the time to pay Kam Wah a visit. The total for our bun and two drinks was only $57 HKD!

Got a delicious and fresh pineapple bun to go! It was still warm. They cut a piece of butter and put it in the middle. I was surprised to taste a sweet floral flavor in the butter that complements the bun very well. There are two fronts for this restaurant, side by side. On one of the store fronts, there was a lady that packed the bakery items. Very efficient and quick service.

A must try Hong Kong cafe If you're looking for a traditional and tasty Hong Kong style breakfast, Kam Wah is the place to go. This is a review of a cafe in Hong Kong from my recent trip there. The place is a short walk from our hotel on Nathan Road. Came here for my favorite breakfast items: French toast, pineapple buns, and milk tea. It was a short wait for us to get a small table. The milk tea is great, smooth, and creamy. My son ordered iced milk tea. It tastes good, but I still like the traditional hot version. The French toast, fried golden brown, tastes delicious, buttery, and sweet, with a nice touch of peanut butter. We also ordered a pineapple bun. The topping was crusty and crunchy. The bread is eggy and soft as it should be. The service is quick. This is Hong Kong. They get you the food as quickly as they can. And they expect you to finish as quickly as you can also. So the next party waiting in line can get your table! It was a small place. You may feel crowded as you walk in. But most popular cafes are like that. We enjoyed the short visit there! If you happen to be in the area, give it a try.

This place gets really, really busy, and is more of a tourist trap than a foodie paradise that some reviewers on the interwebs claim. We waited in line outside for about 5-10 minutes and we're escorted to our seat. We get to our seat--it's fine, just super crowded, and anyone passing by me is touching me. But I've lived in Asia long enough to not be bothered by it. The menu was not in English, and I cannot read characters. My husband can, but he didn't know how to translate some of the things to me. So it took me a while to figure out what to order. The server comes to our table, and we are not ready yet. She's yelling at me about what I want. But, like, I didn't know what I wanted yet, and she needed to chill TF out. By the time my husband translated everything for me, we decided on the French toast and the pork chop pineapple bun. I liked the French toast, but the bun is what really took the cake. The thing is that I could probably find this food of the same or similar quality in another Hong Kong canteen that wouldn't be filled to the brim with people, and I wouldn't be yelled at. We're going somewhere else next time.

Busy and bustling, Kam Wah is a popular place for both tourists and locals. I loved the pineapple bun here as well as the iced Hong Kong milk teas. Very nice texture and the melting of the butter was perfect. For lunch, my boyfriend ordered the beef chow fun and fried rice. Cleanliness and bottleneck issues of long wait times for food to come out prevented a 5 star review ultimately. Very wallet friendly place, and definitely a favorite to return to.

My kid loved the egg sandwich with spam. The egg tarts are decent. Came twice for breakfast in the span of a week and it's a good value for the money.

I'm a sucker for Instant Noodles with Satay Beef for breakfast every time I come back for HK. It's like a must for me to go visit every spot that I know that serves it and compare it to see which one has the best flavor, the best tender beef, and not too salty broth. In addition, the pineapple bun is a must for me because I just love eating away the top layer. I could care less about everything else, especially the butter. I don't really enjoy eating the butter bolo bao because I've never been a butter type of person. The food was okay for a typical Cantonese breakfast but just know that you will sit with random strangers unless the aunties place you at a table against the walls, then you'll have at least some privacy. Service is typical at any of these cha chaan teng; the aunties are rushing you and are expecting you to know your order the moment you sit down. So if you're a tourist, don't think of this as rude because it's customary and it's normal, especially if they rush you out with the bill.

Heard about this hk cafe has the best pineapple bun to offer and is so close to where we stayed in Hong Kong. We made a trip to get breakfast at Kam Wah before ladies street open at 11 am. We got there around 9:30 am has no line and got to sit immediately. If this is your first time experience eating in a Hong Kong cafe, be ready to share with strangers for a small table. I usually make friends with table mate, you can also get tips for what's best to order or even get recommendations for your next foodie destination. We sat down and ordered their breakfast combo, satay beef with instant noodles, ham and egg over macaroni, pineapple buns with butter and French toast. Their combo usually comes with choice of beverages, and the best choices will go to Hong Kong milk tea! Food is good, but they don't have good chili sauce or house satay sauce to offer for the noodle soup. The pineapple bun is not warm. Price is reasonable for the portion. Expect lines when you eat here. We definitely got better satay beef instant noodles with house made sauce and pineapple bun in the same area.

This place was close to our hotel, so we stopped by to get our vintage cha-chaan-teng fix. It was early enough that it was only 1/3 full, so no yelling or hurrying was done by the staff. But we did get lectured on not being completely clear on our ordering, so we got part of that full experience anyway :-) The food was good, particularly the pineapple buns. Airy yet still substantial. Fresh out of the oven. But generally, the food is not any better or worse than other comparable places (or even Cafe de Coral, etc.). But at least they will do the food correctly. Can't expect more than that for a $5USD/person breakfast.

Vacationing in Hong Kong and have to try some pineapple bao/bun! This place baked up the best pineapple bao I've had in my life so far ( I'm 43) It's has the perfect balance of softness that carries a hint of lemon and the crust is crisp and crumbling but doesn't fall all off when you take a bite of it! I'm giving out five stars to the restaurants in Hong Kong like Derek Jeter gives herpes to all his lovers. But Kam Wah is another deserving Hong Kong Cafe. While I've had French toast and a pineapple buns in the past, the HK version is just better. The menu is in Chinese and English. The menu is also covered with photos of the food just in case your English is spoken in Ebonics like mine. Just point and smile. We ordered: French toast: my wife though this was the best stuff ever. I only took a bite, it was extremely rich, buttery, and sweet. Bring your insulin shot. Pineapple bun with pork chop: I'm not sure why pork chops taste so much better here than in US, they just do. Again my wife liked this item too. Service is efficient and the food comes out extremely fast. The turnover of customers is high, people coming in and out. Most locals just come for the pineapple bun with a thick slice of butter. Good stuff.

I had decided to Kam Wah for breakfast since I had seen their HK bolo bao with butter. Took me just a little bit longer than I should have to find the place from the outside but managed to find a table immediately on a weekday morning. I went with one of those along with their HK style milk tea and their udon noodles with ham. The food came out pretty quickly but -haha for me, their noodles were just alright to me. Not too much flavor, but that really comes from the spam. Their pineapple bun, however, now that's what you come for and that did not disappoint! There's a good warm buttery flaky top that goes so well and that random chunk of butter in the middle xD hahaha. Kinda think that I should just come here just to eat their pastries.... Their HK milk tea was the first that I had on my trip and it was really good - strong milk tea flavor comes at you. To have it iced is to have it cost a few HKD more. Cash only, probably need to point if you're not a native speaker.

A close friend of mine found this place on Yelp when we were in Hong Kong staying in Prince Edward area and it became our go-to spot for breakfast the entire time we were there. Milk tea is to standard, 'nuf said, the pineapple butter bun is fresh as hell, french toast is superb. I loved this place so much that I went here at 6:30AM before my flight just to grab some buns and mik tea to go. I look forward to coming back.

The boyfriend found this spot online as he wanted me to try out the famous pineapple buns in Hong Kong. I am so glad he did because the pineapple buns from Kim Wah Cafe were HEAVENLY! Lucky for us, there was no wait around noon time! We were immediately seated with another party, which is fairly common for restaurants in Hong Kong, and placed our order. Along with the pineapple bun, we also ordered the curry chicken steak and Kam Wah pork chops. We also got a bowl of soup, not sure what it was but it was tasty! Food was delicious! Again, their pineapple bun was amazing! The exterior was perfectly crunchy and sweet with the inside being fluffy and soft. Not to mention that nice slab of butter in between is the cherry on top! I would eat these buns everyday if I could! The curry was also yummy, I loved the kick it had to it, and the pork chops were great! Definitely recommend this spot for their pineapple buns and curry!

You better brush up on your Cantonese or you'll be left in the dust, especially Kowloon where I was staying the entire time. Kam Wah Cafe is well known for their HK style food offerings and recommended to me as a place to stop by for some authentic food. Finding the place was not difficult. They appear to have the building next door too as they were going back and forth with plates of food for the overflow folks that ordered. You will share a table with someone, that's common. You better know what you want before you sit down or you'll get a death stare from the staff. I had the beef chow fun and a HK milk tea for less than $50HK. Super filling and big portions of beef chunks. They use skinnier vs wide noodles here but it's fine. The cup of water they give you is not for drinking, it's to wash your utensils. Just FYI so you don't go sipping that tepid cup of water. Slosh your fork/chopsticks around a bit to wash away any residual particles from the dish washer. Also bring your own napkins since it's not provided in most places. I've experienced way worse service elsewhere so if your expectations are low and you blurt out exactly what you want, you'll do fine. Don't expect 5 star dining when you're out and about. It's all about good, quick, and cheap eats. Once you're done, pay and leave. They don't want you lingering longer than usual because there's a line of people waiting outside.

Classic HK cafe so the service was terrible. But the food makes up for it! Best HK Milk Teas (both not & cold) and Pineapple buns with butter! I always try to go here whenever I am in HK. The satay beef noodle stir fry was tasty but super oily. The food comes out very quickly almost immediately after ordering. FYI not a place to catch up with friends over a meal, they rush you out! It's a part of the HK cafe culture so don't take it personally.

I think they are more known for their pineapple bun with butter so I definitely recommend it. I think the pineapple bun is a bit bigger than the ones you usually get from other cafes and it's fresh and hot. Definitely my recommendation. The french toast, the recent time I had it, was not as hot as I want it to be which is a bit disappointing. However, Kam Wah's french toast is one of those places that actually has the peanut butter inside which I prefer. I also tried their entrees and I think they are very delicious as well. The recent time I had it, I took a few bite of the singaporean style fried vermicelli and it had a lot of "wok he." Kam Wah is definitely one of my go-to places when I come back. Needed a snack while wandering around Kowloon side so stopped in for their infamous pineapple bun with butter. Table for 1 - got a spot right away in a tiny booth with an older grandpa who was intent on camping out there in awhile. I was unable to order the pineapple bun with butter only (only option was to get it to go) so I got a milk tea (which cost more than the bun!!) Bun came hot, melted the pat of butter a little bit and had it's crispy topping. I felt it could've been hotter but it probably was as I was taking a ton of photos for awhile. Milk tea was standard found in all HK cafes. $27 HKD and you're out. They take Octopus card so that was nice for not having to carry change around. I'll come back for a brief stop to rest my legs and for a good looking snack. Plus the area it is in is so vibrant and so busy.

This cafe is by far my favorite in Hong Kong! You walk in and feel like you went back in time. Love that authentic and warm cafe feel to it. Limited English is not problem here because their menu has English AND pictures, so if you don't know what something is called, just point at the picture- easy! I heard you had to order a drink in order to be seated, which was not an issue for me at all because I voluntarily drank cold milk tea every morning that I was in Hong Kong. HK STYLE LEMON TEA was really refreshing as well and worth trying (honestly, anything with "HK STYLE" sticks out to me lol) My friend and I got a little too excited and ordered all of the Cha Chaan Teng (HK cafe) buns on the menu, but the items that sticked out to us most would definitely be the Pineapple Bun, HK STYLE FRENCH TOAST, and the BBQ PORK ROLL. I would recommend getting cold drinks, especially if you're about to down all of those buns!! The pineapple bun is AN ESSENTIAL HERE. You can't leave without trying this! It's served warm with a cold slice of butter in the middle. I'm not sure if it was just me, but I caught a slight citrus taste from the butter....could just be me but I thought I should note how much I liked that little twist!! The HK style French toast has a thin layer of peanut butter that literally makes all the difference. So good. I'm a huge fan of cha siu buns, so the BBQ pork roll obviously satisfied my cravings, but I absolutely LOVED the flakey crust from the pastry. I could eat those all day. The other buns we got were okay, but not something I'd order again. The only thing I wish I ordered was some egg tarts- noting for next time!!

- Located near Prince Edward MTR Station. You can also exit from Mongkok and walk your way over - Restaurant easy-to-spot, big sign overhead and they have a 'to-go' bakery at the front entrance. So there's usually people lining up either to eat inside or buying a quick snack - Menu is in both Chinese and English (not to fear!) - Staff are generally nice and will try to be patient if you have issues - Restaurant is very busy (even when I went at 4pm on a weekday), so do have a little patient or be ready to know what to order/experience ahead of time - There a lot of seating, but like their culture - you would have to share a table with strangers if you have a smaller group - Tried their famous Butter Pineapple Bun, literally a small block of butter is inserted between the pineapple bun - Pineapple bun itself is quite delicious, the crust is not flaky (easy to eat). They're mostly pre-made in advanced, so once you order - you will get it within 1-2 minutes. It was still warm and not stale. - Ordered a iced HK milk tea, pretty standard and typical. Not extremely smooth or outstanding, but good to quesh your thirst This restaurant does live up to its name as one of their top recommended HK Style Cafe to go (aka Cha Chan Tang). Instagrammable and picture worthy. The bun and tea itself was cheap (listed in my picture), so budget friendly!

BEST PINEAPPLE BUNS I'VE EVER TASTED. Pineapple bun with butter (bolo bao) is among the top HK breakfast staples and Kam Wah cafe does it best. Have no fear, they have an english menu! Breakfast combo (pineapple bun w/ butter and drink) is only $29 HKD. Getting the bun itself is only $9. My table got a little ambitious and ordered 1 bun for every person. These buns are HUGE, definitely want to share. The top is perfectly crunchy with the right amount of buttery sweetness and doesn't fall apart as you take a bit into the warm, soft, pillowy bread. The butter in the center melts as you take a bite into the bun. The saltiness of the butter compliments the sweetness of the bun. The combination is amazing. Not a huge butter fan? You can also get the bun stuffed with eggs, pork, or chicken! These bolo bao breakfast sandwiches take it to the next level! Get the milk tea with the bun! HK milk tea has a really strong black tea taste than your normal typical milk tea. It's strong and not too sweet. Ordered the satay ramen soup. Expecting it to taste like instant noodles, it surprisingly exceeded my expectations! It was quite delicious and the perfect savory item I needed after my sweet pineapple bun!

Truth be told, this is just a normal 茶餐廳 (tea restaurant). I'm not sure why it's so popular exactly, but this place shows up on a lot of recommended places. Don't get me wrong, the food here is quite good. Actually, I have only ever been here for breakfast, so that's the only thing I'm qualified to comment on... but you're able to get what they serve pretty much anywhere in the city. One of the unique things they have is the special french toast, which is a deep fried french toast with peanut butter in it. I think this is one of the more unique things they have on offer for breakfast, and if you're into that stuff, you could totally consider it.

I love cha chaan teng (cafe) in Hong Kong. Get the bo lo yao (pineapple butter bun). A slab of butter is sandwiched in between the pineapple bun. It's so good if you get one straight from the oven. The crunchy outer shell paired with a soft warm interior is to die for. Just wait until the butter starts melting! My second close favorite is their HK style french toast. Inside is a layer of rich peanut butter. Drizzle some maple syrup/condensed milk on top of the crispy toast and take a bite. Perfection Note that to sit down, you must order a drink. I recommend either a hot or iced milk tea

Visited 6/19/2019 I traveled from California, USA and this as my first night in Hong Kong. Met with a friend and she led me here for dinner. I asked her to order a favorite here. My first official dish in Hong Kong. The noodles were essentially packaged ramen but super dressed up with ingredients. I also ordered a Milk Tea, that's where the minus star came from. Just me personally, I like my drinks on the sweeter side but this can easily be a 5 star place.
