Boston Globe Reviews Kamakura, a Japanese Restaurant in Downtown Boston - Eater Boston

"Devra First reviewed Kamakura for the Boston Globe earlier this month. The Japanese restaurant stirs excitement for First, and though it’s not perfect, she writes, it’s unlike any other restaurant in the city. There are numerous ways to eat at Kamakura, including an artful, multi-course kaiseki menu, a la carte options, and a bento lunch. 'Kamakura is sincere, ambitious, and expensive — the sort of restaurant that opens often in larger cities but is harder for Boston to support,' First writes. Kamakura has robata-grilled dishes like thin-sliced duck breast that’s 'all primal smoke and chew' for First, and she recommends the hamachi pastrami and an 'excellent' savory egg custard called chawanmushi. 'One of Kamakura’s greatest strengths is its sake program,' First writes, and that’s where chef Youji Iwakura’s time as a sake sommelier shows through. Overall, First gives Kamakura two and a half stars out of a possible four (between 'good' and 'excellent,') writing that it’s 'eccentric, imperfect yet filled with personality.'" - Dana Hatic

I went here on Saturday (July 12) and I think it was PHENOMENAL!!! The food was excellent and the staff service was good. They checked often which was great. I had a house salad, pork ramen, and green icecream (Helado Verde). The bowl of ramen was HUGE. I couldn’t even finish it, and took a little home. Good prices as well. I will definitely go back before I leave El Salvador and hope to visit again on a future vacation. I felt very comfortable in the atmosphere due to the professionalism and as a tourist (no hostility, excessive starting, etc). This restaurant has been open for about 30 years and I’m not surprised based on the quality and their decor and music playing which reflect the Asian cultural aspects.

First visit. And holy wow. This place will impress. I've tried tons of sushi in El Salvador, and I'm pretty sure none of it has been up to this level. As for the ramen, i would rank it as my second favorite in San Salvador. It's walking distance from the crown plaza hotel. I sadly didn't get pictures of the inside, but the atmosphere is on point. Lighting is relaxing. Great for a group of 9 like we were, or tables for two. The prices are almost on par with the United States, but so are the serving sizes. Great amounts of food, but prices per dish can be in the $15.00 to $25.00 range, so don't be surprised when you see the vast menu. Vast as in there are so many options (not in a bad way like it can be at other restaurants) I can't wait to go back and try something new and different. Hats off to the staff. Service was great, table could have been cleared a bit more often considering that we had some dishes to share. But over all. Great experience, well worth the visit.

3.5 stars. We were a bit disappointed in the lack of flavors, a bit bland. The atmosphere was nice, the service was good. We asked for the tofu to be extra crisp, it was very soggy on both dishes. The lemonade tasted like it was freshly made. The tempura vegetables were ok. We got dessert (cheesecake) because we were still hungry after not eating our food.

Food it's definitely good, however the waiter didn't know the menu. I have visited before and this time felt a little disappointed because I didn't find the plate I wanted in the menu. There's not a vibe there just a restaurant that's it. Not impressed with the service and not the first time.

This is one of the best sushi bars in El Salvador. The place has a great vibe to Japanese kitchen.

My best friend invited me to have lunch at Kamakura for my birthday. However the experience was not so great. They took forever to serve the food. The place looks better in pictures than what it really is. Once we got our order we enjoyed but I still think it is too pricey.

Very good place. True japanese flavor and many dishes to choose from. The mood and setting is great, it even has art. Prices are high but there are dishes that can be shared. Try and seat in the chairs with no shoes on, unique experience
