"At sushi spot Kampai, located on that long stretch between Hammersmith and Kensington, you’ll find friends deciphering ambiguous WhatsApp messages and families in need of sustenance after a stroll in Holland Park. Whether they’re Gen Z-ers or still make calls from the landline, the one thing all these people have in common is that they know Kampai serves top-tier sushi. London’s Top Casual Neighbourhood Sushi Spots - London - The Infatuation

"A cosy spot with sleek interiors, Kampai knows a thing or two about fish. The Kensington restaurant is usually filled with local families who have popped in after leaving Holland Park, solo diners taking advantage of a free spot at the sushi bar, and groups that span Gen Z to those who still use a landline. It's compact but comfortable with wooden bamboo walls, black ceilings, and enough space between each table that you don’t have to worry about elbowing your neighbour’s rock shrimp and baby spinach salad. Load up on nigiri—the scallop is top-tier—and get some of the chef’s special rolls to share." - rianne shlebak, jake missing

Kampai Kensington - Review - Kensington - London - The Infatuation

"Come to sushi spot Kampai any day of the week—bar Monday when it’s closed—and you’ll find groups of friends attempting to decipher an ambiguous WhatsApp message, hungry families in need of sustenance after a trip to Holland Park, and solo diners who just happened to spot a free seat at the sushi bar. Whether they’re Gen Z-ers or still make calls from the landline, the one thing all these people have in common is that they know Kampai is serving some top-tier sushi. A plain-fronted spot between Hammersmith and Kensington that blends in with the surrounding cafes and takeaway shops, Kampai is a low-key Japanese restaurant that doesn’t have to scream and shout to get people in. The focus is very much on what’s happening in the kitchen and specifically behind the bar, where the sushi chef is slicing away, prepping order after order of crunchy dragon rolls, tender chu-toro, and excellent sake nigiri. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch The dining room is compact but comfortable, with wooden bamboo walls, black ceilings, and enough space between each table that you won't worry about elbowing your neighbour’s rock shrimp and baby spinach salad on the way to the bathroom. Perfect for a sushi date if you’re in west London, or treating your parents to a dinner that won’t leave you rationing rice crackers until the next payday, it’s a solid spot to bring just about anyone who’s interested in eating quality raw fish. There’s a lot to choose from, with a menu that’s split into small plates, donburi, and pages and pages of sushi. We’d recommend getting one of those horenso salads, some tempura—because, fried stuff—and focusing the rest of your efforts on the nigiri list because the sushi section is what we’d get on a bus to travel here for. The rest of the menu, with things like salmon teriyaki bento boxes and halal chicken katsu, means that even if someone isn’t in the mood for raw fish, they’ll be more than OK. Food Rundown Horenso Salad Salads don’t have to be boring. Exhibit A: the deep-fried rock shrimp covered in a spicy mayo dressing that you’ll find on this baby spinach salad. The only right way to start your meal. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Salmon Tatare A tower of citrusy, spicy, and refreshing avocado topped with chunks of salmon, tobiko, and crispy shallots. Creamy from the spicy sesame mayo, with a slight crunch from the shallots. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch King Dragon Roll The inside out rolls are all solid here, but you should also get involved in the chef’s specials. In particular this crunchy, tempura king prawn and tobiko number. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Nigiri Warm vinegared rice, with a melt-in-the-mouth piece of fish on top. We’ve found that the two piece nigiri is better than the mix you’ll find in the platters section. Pick with confidence, but know that our favourites are the hotate and the chu toro. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Chicken Katsu Curry For a spot that feels like it’s all about the sushi, Kampai makes a really great katsu curry. It’s moreish and filled with softened vegetables and crispy panko fried chicken. This generous portion is enough to fill you up until breakfast the next day. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch" - Rianne Shlebak

Heard about this sushi place for a while so I had to try it out when came to the area. It was amazing!! Salmon and avocado were very fresh, rice was cooked to perfection! The restaurant is a cozy little place but it doesn't compromised on taste and quality! Coming back fosho😋

I used to go order takeout from here regularly but I rarely go to the restaurant. I left the UK, and came back after over 2 years overseas and I can confirm that the food is amazing and much better in person! The staff made me feel welcomed, almost like they are my parents. Thank you Kampai for making this experience so special and nostalgic ❤️

Small Japanese restaurant near Kensington Olympia. Visited weekend at opening time, seems to be quite busy with bookings. Great selection of Japanese food both hot and cold. Loved the mini don.

Beautiful, delicious food, bursting with flavour. Can't fault the experience. My husband and I had a bento box each and a dragon roll to share. I had the chicken teriyaki bento and was amazed at the depth of flavours with each bite, the charred flavours with the sweet and sticky sauce were perfectly balanced with the rice and the dressing in the salad. My husband had the tonkatsu bento box and he was also very happy with his choice. We were both pleasantly full and blown away by the quality and talent to prepare such dishes. Every aspect of the food was perfect and possibly the best Japanese restaurant we've been to which was a most pleasant surprise. It is incredible value for money. The service is great as well, and the atmosphere is very relaxing. We wanted to come back again to try their katsu curry but unfortunately we couldn't, as we were no longer in the area (we travelled all the way from Newcastle!). Next time we are in London, we will definitely make sure to visit again. Highly recommend!

Came in for a solo seat which fortunately they had space for. Service was spot on and quick. I was seated at counter so could see a bit of the food being made and some of the fish cuts on offer, which were a large variety. Now, I've been to Japan and had perhaps the freshest sashimi you can buy without, you know, getting your own sashimi chef. Usually fish in England lacks that soft melt in the mouth quality, Kampai Sushi tasted fresh. The medium fatty tuna was beautiful, melted away, so yummy! If the menu and servers had been in Japanese I'd have thought I was in Japan again. Also prices are pretty good for London and sushi in general especially given the quality. Would 100% recommend 👍

Google
What a great find. On a search for some food, I came across Kampai. I got a takeaway. I returned today for another takeaway. I sat in a restaurant, which is a lovely environment. I decided to order a number of small plates so I could enjoy different flavours. I wasn't sorry. All tasted delicious. I don't know how they make aubergine taste this good! I couldn't even pick my favourite because I loved all of it. Happily will return again and luckily it's walking distance. If you plan to sit in, I would recommend a booking as I could see it was popular and it's only Thursday early evening.

I was craving for Japanese food and I found this family owned place at a walking distance to my flat (Around Kensington Olympia). Arrived around 7 ish pm and they asked us if we had a reservation, we were surprised since the place was almost empty. We didn’t but they kindly allocated us two spots next to the kitchen/bar. Few minutes later we realised why they asked, around 8pm the place was packed as if people agreed to arrive all at the same time. It was all suddenly cause we weren’t paying attention to anything but to the preparation of our order and enjoying our food. The quality and the flavour was unparalleled and as one gentleman who sit next to us mentioned: “This is the best Japanese restaurant outside of Japan I have ever tried, and I’ve been in Japan many times” We didn’t argued, the food was great and in the matter of taste no one has the last word, but this place could probably be so: The best Japanese out of Japan. Totally recommend
