Miami’s 13 Best Thai Restaurants | Eater Miami

"This Sunset Drive staple has been open for almost three decades. Most consider it a sushi bar, but the Thai selections are the low-key winners on this menu. Don’t skimp on ordering appetizers from an array of spicy soups to shumai and a crispy duck salad; there is plenty to choose from — entrees almost aren’t needed, but the massaman curry with choice of protein, potato, avocado, and cashew nuts in massaman curry sauce and coconut milk should be on everyone’s to-do list." - Amber Love Bond

It was a good deal approximately 1 year ago, but it’s been in a steady decline. The Tuna Tower is 1/2 the size of what it used to be, the eel roll has a tiny piece when it used to be full size, and everything is in decline. Maybe they’re trying to do too much, as it used to be primarily a Japanese Restaurant and the Thai Menu is mediocre at best. Today we ordered Pad Thai specifically requesting “not spicy” and it was so spicy we had to discard it. The woman on the phone argued consistently that it wasn’t possible? I’m hoping they recover in the near future, but I’m choosing to skip it. It’s better to stick to one thing and do it well, than several mediocre options. By the way the “white fish” is Tilapia which is one of the cheapest fish in the market.

I went here for lunch with my son. The outside is not impressive! It looks very run down, dirty and dingy. The parking lot and outside of the building can definitely use an update and cleaning. BUT… the inside is clean. The servers are all very friendly and attentive. And most importantly, the food is fresh and delicious! The prices are also very reasonable. We split the fried gyoza as an appetizer. I got a salmon skin hand-roll and the dragon roll. My son got the salmon skin roll. Everything was presented very nicely and tasted great! Kampai is not close to my home. I was only in the area for a Dr appointment. If I’m in the area again, I will definitely go back.

Food was really good, sadly the service is terrible, you have to be on top of the waitresses asking for the food, we were 3, and di not serve us on time, one was waiting the other 2 watching, then the appetizers came after the main course, too disorganized. The environment is family and friends oriented. Waiting time for the food to start serving was about 43 min. I always have a timer so I can see how long does it take to get served.

Went for a very late night date & honestly, the food and service were amazing. We loved the hot green tea (plus free refills!!!) & we got: - steamed gyoza (must order) - rainbow supreme roll (my personal fave) - kampai roll (comes fried) - neptune roll (more spicy mayo than anything else) Loved that they were able to accommodate even if we arrived at 9:30 pm. Devoured our food & left happy!

I have been coming to Kampai almost as long as they’ve been here. Lol. A quaint hidden place that may be small but is large on food quality and service. I love the beautiful presentation of dishes and have never had a bad experience. The sushi is delicious!

Google
I been coming to this place for over 10 years is very close to home. My favorite rolls are : Neptune, Mango Roll, Ninja Roll. Service: 10 out of 10 they are like family every time they see me. Place: Typical Japanese cozy restaurant One of my top sushi restaurants in south Miami.

Google
Food was delicious and clean. The menu had a variety of authentic Thai and Japanese dishes with a great assortment of Sushi to choose from. This restaurant has been around for many years and has definitely kept up with their quality standard. The location is difficult to park with but the service does make up for it.

Yelp
The yummiest most authentic sushi spot! The service and ambience are top notch. Hole in the wall but better this way!

Yelp
This place has been here forever, way back when it was one of the only few Japanese restaurants, before there were ramen shops and omakase. It has been a neighborhood staple for its good quality and price. It has been years since my last visit, and I am glad they have kept up with maintaining the place, so it looks bright and fresh enough, with a long sushi counter near the entrance. They do offer an extensive menu, with almost a page-ful of appetizers, lots of rolls and cooked items like teriyaki, noodles and katsu. There are quite a few authentic Japanese dishes. Among my friends we had a variety of rolls and other items. I'd give the food a B+. The fish is not the best but definitely not bad. I don't like the rice in the sushi though, it's more mushy than it should be and also kind of bland. The katsu and teriyaki are a very generous portion, as big as the plate itself. In today's world it's hard to find such portions for under $20 so definitely appreciate the value.

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic experience at Kampai! My friends and I stumbled upon this gem and were blown away by the delicious food and unbeatable prices. The cozy ambiance added to the charm of the place. The tuna and crispy rice were divine, and the eel rolls and gyozas were simply irresistible. But the real showstopper? The mango martinis - hands down the best I've ever had! The portions were generous, leaving us happily stuffed. Special shoutout to the attentive waitress who made our evening even more enjoyable. Kampai, you've won our hearts - we'll definitely be back for more!

Yelp
I have to say I have been coming here over ten years last week I came with my boyfriend all new staff except for a couple of the guys that roll the sushi. The service was terrible. We sat at the bar. Everyone would just look at us, but never came over to give us the menu water. The girl that puts the two orders together was just kind of standing around, but would never make eye contact with us even though she was about 10 feet away, I had to ask for everything I am shocked because I've always gotten such good service here and as soon as I walked in the door, everyone all the staff, including the men that rule the sushi will look up at you make eye contact, and say hello that's all out the door whatever happened to customer relations I know you get a lot of repeat Customers there. You really need to tighten up on the quality of service there I always tip good for the first time in a long time. I didn't tip as well even when I do to go pick up for my house I tipped very good that's out the door for right now until I see more up to par. I hope the owner or the manager sees this and teaches, the servers to serve correctly you don't cross over the front of somebody to give somebody else water seems like they just pull them off the street just because they were Asian. It's a shame it's got good quality food. You guys need to tighten up because I'm sure there's a lot more places to go to.

Yelp
We had an unplanned visit here on Sunday whilst waiting for our friend's dog to be finished with an emergency vet service across the street. It was a perfect spot to grab a bite while we waited. The menu is large - I am always wary of "combo" type places where there are two distinct cuisines on the menu, but I knew this place has been in business forever, so I guess they have figured it out. Larry S. and I both got Japanese combos and our friend had a wonton soup with a roll. First of all, the portions are HUGE!! It was so much food. Even the solo roll our friend ordered had about 15 pieces to it. My favorite was the tempura that came with Larry's combo. Lots of variety and clearly freshly fried. Super crisp with a tangy dipping sauce. I thought the fish freshness was so-so. Not off at all, but right on the edge. This was confirmed when Larry, who admittedly has a very sensitive constitution, had to make an emergency pit stop back at the vet due to an upset stomach. Nevertheless, we did eat all the food and enjoyed it very much. Getting the bill at the end took a bit of time, but other than that, the service was very good! Although I wish we didn't have to have the emergency vet visit, it was a pleasant surprise to have lunch at Kampai.

Yelp
Second time here, the place is always packed, but they always manage to seat you quick. We ordered some appetizers and entrees. Do yourself a favor and order the steamed pork shumai. If you don't eat pork, do the shrimp. We also ordered the tuna tower, wich is like a tuna tartare, but with lettuce? Don't ask me why. Also, it doesn't come with chips or anything, but is good by itself. My husband ordered the spicy octopus. Honestly, not that spicy. It was good. I ordered the spicy tuna roll. I just don't enjoy the seaweed on rolls, but it was a good refreshing choice. Lastly, we tried the spicy pad Thai, which brings a lot of food. The fish looks and feels pretty fresh. The place is small, but plenty of seating space, there is a sushi bar where you see everything that they prepare. That's where we sat this time and I wish they had a better sanitary system. On our previous visit we came and ordered the papaya salad (I've had better) and the tuna crispy (always a great choice). I've added the pictures as well.

Yelp
Don't let the outside of this place fool you. This is a legit Japanese and Thai restaurant. I was really super irises by the quality of the Thai but was prepared for the high quality sushi. I had the Tom yum with chicken - they will make it super spicy, if you ask for it. If you're not beet red and sweating, it isn't spicy. For sushi, I had the Ikura and quail egg. They did not have uni, unfortunately. I also got a Zombie roll with brown rice. Everything was very tasty and fresh. I would definitely go back. The service was also very friendly and accurate. Remember to tip well.

Yelp
I've been here several times over the years and the food has always been decent. But today I ordered a take out roll and when I got home there was a fly stuck on one of the pieces. So grossed out and upset! Definitely never going back again.

Yelp
I have passed this restaurant 1,000 times but have never stopped. Today had lunch with friends and was so obsessed with this restaurant ! The people were friendly and the service was prompt and professional. The food had quality and you could taste it and they were eager to please and explain and cater to your wants. I can't wait to return. Their lunch specials were awesome and their wine amply served. Love Kampai !!

Sophia R.

Yelp
Came here with high expectations based on reviews. Unfortunately we were not happy with our expeirence... Fish did not taste fresh and dragon roll was not great either. Hope it was just that day... Otherwise, place was cool and had a nice ambiance.

Mayda B.

Yelp
Great fresh food and the best service! Nice ambiance, clean and friendly staff! Chicken fried rice is delicious!

Yelp
Siempre vuelvo. Nunca dejó de venir.

Yelp
It was Valentine's Day and we really didn't want to wait too long to have dinner. Luckily someone recommended me this place and we are glad we came! The wait was only 10 minutes although they were pretty busy. The sushi is amazing and so worth trying. The prices are reasonable and everything we ordered was great. For dessert we had the fried banana tempura and they gave us a free little cupcake. Very friendly staff, I wish it was a bit bigger it is a very small spot.

Yelp
Kampai is always bustling and with good reason! This hidden gem offers an expansive menu loaded with a variety of traditional Japanese and Thai dishes and specialty sushi, a casual environment, and great service. My personal favorite dishes include: - Tuna Tower - Pad Thai - Red Curry - Yellow Tail Jalapeño - Dragon Roll - Wonton Soup

Deborah R.

Yelp
Food super fresh. All the staff is friendly and helpful. Can't go wrong with anything on there menu.

Avelino B.

Yelp
Today was my birthday and I felt like eating sushi. I ordered the boat for two and my wife and I were really satisfied. This is a real good restaurant and i really recommend it. The service was special and unique and the sushi was out of this world . The restaurant is not very big but is super clean and very nice inside.
google avatar

Yelp
Typically we go for the amazing lunch specials, unfortunately they are not available on weekends...... none to say still Delicious! They offer dinner specials similar to the lunch ones but cost an average of 8$ more, still worth it. The sashimi is always fresh and they definitely have the BEST GINGER DRESSING in town! The staff is always very attentive and pleasant. This has always been a tiny gem in the neighborhood!
google avatar

Gabby G.

Yelp
I looove this place. This has become my go-to spot for sashimi and nigiri that's so close to home. The quality of the fish is delicious and their pricing is very economical.

Yelp
Cant find a better Tom Kha Gai in Miami (Thai Coconut Soup-Chicken). For Japanese Prices here better than Sushin near BJs on 117th & Sunset. Weekday lunch specials a good deal. At busy times parking can be an issue. Nice to have choice of Thai or Japanese or some of both. I am addicted to their Tom Kha Gai medium spicy.
google avatar

Sophia G.

Yelp
I have been coming here for years since I was a little girl and honestly I love it here. Every time I try something new it is so delicious the food is always amazing!! The service is spectacular the people are very attentive and very polite. The place is super cute and very clean. I have also never found a sushi place that can do almost any roll without rice. Personally I order the crazy salmon without rice. Definitely recommend coming here!!
google avatar

NY M.

Yelp
Everything was really good. All the food was really fresh. Sushi was very good as well the rice and pad thai.

Jeffrey B.

Yelp
I have lived in the neighborhood for years and finally tried this lovely restaurant . We dined in on a Sunday , the place was full and take out orders were flying out the door. We had a reservation and were seated promptly. We enjoyed the Maseman curry dish and vegetable pad Thai The bowl of Thai soup was delicious. The service was excellent, the meal arrived steaming hot and quickly. I don't know of any better Thai food in the area. The menu has a wide assortment of various Asian cuisine, such as Japanese, Korean that we did not sample. I recommend Kampai and I am looking forward to returning.

Eudaldo C.

Yelp
Authentic JapanAuthentic Japanese restaurant with excellent food and excellent service. The place is small, if you have to wait a little it is worth it
google avatar

Mary M.

Yelp
Our family has been going here for over 30 years. The service is great, so is the atmosphere. Food is fresh and they have a large selection of Japanese, sushi, noodles as well as Thai food. You can't go wrong for lunch or dinner.
google avatar

Catherine J.

Yelp
My husband and I were looking for a sushi place near our church and found this hidden gem. Front door customer service was excellent.
google avatar

Humberto S.

Yelp
Let me tell you this is such a hidden gem. After seeing other reviews on this sushi restaurant I had to give it a try. It is such affordable sushi with the best quality ingredients. My personal favorite was the Yummy roll which the waitress recommended to me and it is not on the menu. If you love great affordable sushi and are in the area I highly recommend you try this spot.
google avatar

Mike P.

Yelp
Kampai is a locals gem. Their sushi is very fresh and authentic. We order from them all the time and the quality is always great.
google avatar

Kess A.

Yelp
Wow this restaurant has the best sushi. I am so happy I came here the quality of the fish and the way the rolls are prepared wow! I live an hour away and was on this side of town for a bit but I would definitely come back here even if it is far.
google avatar

Sylvia G.

Yelp
Good spot and good food! I used to order the tuna or salmon tower every time. I now stick to a more simple fish roll or a sautéed plate but you really can't go wrong.
google avatar

Hector R.

Yelp
I love this spot located on sunset, the food is always good and the staff is from. The crab Rangoon is my favorite thing to order. They have really good fried rice as well and the sushi is fresh and tasteful. All the servers are very nice and always have a smile on their face. This place doesn't look like much from the outside but on the inside it's a real hidden gem. You can get take out or dine inside, it's located in a small plaza and there's limited parking but usually you can grab a spot. I highly recommend this spot if you're looking for some good Japanese food.
google avatar

Dri R.

Yelp
I very much so enjoyed my dinner. I had crab Rangoon (which was super tasty!) I recommend this place as the staff is super friendly and attentive. :)

Gina S.

Yelp
The food is amazing! We try many Japanese restaurants however we keep coming to this one as it's our favorite place. The waiters are very friendly and fast! Small place however it's very nice and authentic! Try the tuna tower and JB tempura! I would recommend to add some chips for the tuna tower but other than that the food is fresh and tastes good!

John R.

Yelp
My wife and I have been eating here for years and it's amazing! We order at least once a month. We love the tuna tower the best! The people are always extremely friendly and accommodating! She loves the food so much that she wants to eat Kampai after she delivers our baby hahaha
google avatar

Ed W.

Yelp
Kampai is a restaurant that has been part of the southwest Miami since I can remember. The sushi here is basic but fresh... nothing fancy. Prices are very good and service is attentive. They are observing social distancing and wearing gloves and masks. Table seating is limited as per county ordinances.
google avatar

Sinai R.

Yelp
The food was really tasty! Staff was friendly and attentive. Panang Curry was really good!
google avatar

Julio C.

Yelp
Great service fresh delicious food .. if you like sushi you'll love this place not much to look at from the outside but great food and service
google avatar

Bernie A.

Yelp
Considering Japanese cuisine? This place will definitely satisfy your craving! Consistently delicious with friendly and attentive service! Reasonable prices considering the quality... Highly recommend!
google avatar

Vanessa S.

Yelp
My favorite sushi restaurant of all time! I have been going to Kampai for 10 plus years. I love the sushi, it's so fresh and amazing. The chicken Pad Thai is incredible and so tasty. The service is on point and the servers are the nicest and most attentive people ever! The restaurant is on the small side, but they try to keep it authentic. I love Kampai and all of the employees! Top 10 for me!
google avatar

Syrel R.

Yelp
This place has been around forever and they don't miss a beat. The Sushi is always fresh and flavorful and the service is always spot on. I love their shrimp shumai (steamed really brings out the flavor) and the pork gyoza to start. I love raw sushi and love the crunchy tuna roll, the spicy tuna hand roll and the zombie roll. If you're dining in, they make a mean lychee martini (not overly sweet), just right with a good kick. If you're in the area definitely give them a try you won't regret it for fresh sushi near the Kendall area.

Michael C.

Yelp
Great service and food The parking can get tight but if you get there early you won't have trouble
google avatar

Kristine C.

Yelp
I've been coming to this place for years. It never disappoints. I usually order take out on my way home then make a platter to eat from at home for everyone. Everything is fresh and delicious. They don't skimp on products at all. You can ask them to make changes and they will. The parking sucks and the place is small but it really is my favorite sushi place and a go to for me for years. When you order take out they keep your name and address in the system and it makes it so much easier. They get your order done really quickly too. The presentation is always beautiful and you can tell they enjoy what they do and the people they serve. I couldn't recommend a place more than this one. A
google avatar

Natalia G.

Yelp
The food here never disappoints! My husband and I are regulars, be it eating in or ordering out. I usually order the Dragon Rolls and the Crunchy spicy tuna rolls. We have also ordered the sushi/sashimi boats for two and the combo dinner specials: sushi sashimi with NY steak teriyaki combo and sushi sashimi with chicken teriyaki combo. I love their salad with ginger dressing. All fresh, and all absolutely delicious. Phenomenal food and service. I cannot say enough good things about this place. The parking situation tends to be a bit hectic, but that's it. The food is always worth the trip. We love it all!
google avatar

Nicole D.

Yelp
This place has been my favorite sushi spot to eat at in Miami. This is a very homey place to come. The fish is always fresh! So many different options to choose from. My go to items are the ginger salad, gyoza, rainbow rolls, Dragon roll, fried rice, and probably the whole menu haha. It's not expensive, and serves a lot for the price too! The beer is always cold, the desserts are always nice and sweet, and the sushi is to die for. I will continue to come to this place because I've never had a bad experience.
google avatar

Samantha F.

Yelp
I've been going here for sometime now. I was recommended this place by my boyfriend and took my mum here on several occasions and recently celebrated her birthday there. It never disappoints. The service is great. I always get the Naruto roll .
google avatar

Yara M.

Yelp
We had a delicious fried rice and sushi We had the food delivered. We were pleased with their service
google avatar

Gerry L.

Yelp
Located on Sunset Drive and 87 avenue, you find a long running sushi restaurant Kampai. We have been coming there since I was in Elementary years, while frequent visit continued during my college years. Now a days we order takeout at least two to three times a month. This past weekend we ordered several rolls for my brother birthday. The sushi were very fresh and tasty, always consistent with quality.
google avatar

Diandra L.

Yelp
Kampai has been a Miami sushi staple for as long as I can remember. The quality is always good, and the pricing even better. The ambiance is nothing special, but honestly give me good quality sushi and give me great prices and you have a customer for life. I've been visiting Kampai since I was a kid, and it is always solid. I'm more of a sushi purist, so for me the fancy rolls with tempura flakes etc aren't what jump out to me. They have plenty of those here, but their simple combos are what I gravitate towards. Depending on whether you like sashimi or sushi you can find a combo under $30 that is PLENTY of food. Recently I went and ordered chirashi which is sashimi over sushi rice. The portion was huge, and for $21 including a salad I was full and happy. I had never had wine at Kampai before but this week I enjoyed a $7 Sav Blanc- bargain! Parking can be limited, but if you visit on an off time you should be fine!
google avatar

Diane M.

Yelp
Such a cute little Japanese spot. Friendly staff. Yummy food. We went for lunch on a hot day and were so pleased to eat such a refreshing and delicious meal. Definitely hit the spot and would recommend!
google avatar

Gedo R.

Yelp
This place is the best Japanese food I have ate in forever. and the best staff I highly recommend .

Yelp
Phenomenal local spot, hole in the wall vibes. Everything this divine - their mango roll is a refreshing surprise.
