On the Grid : Kanapa restaurant

"The new Ukrainian cuisine. Kanapa is not just an Ukrainian restaurant. Kanapa is located in a legendary part of the town – Andriyivskyy Descent, in a wooden building of the nineteenth century. The restaurant's salon has an avant-garde style. The idea of Kanapa is to reflect a feeling of sheik vintage. Like good wine, it was developed by the restaurateur Dima Borisov and the musician Oleg Skrypka. The menu comprises of a modern interpretation of pre-revolutionary recipes from different regions, sometimes combined with elements of molecular gastronomy. Make sure you find the secret yard!" - Sekretniy Dvorik

Kanapa Restaurant is a fantastic spot right on Andriivsky Descent, perfect for a traditional Ukrainian lunch. The food is made with love, and the borscht—served in a cabbage head—is a real highlight. The atmosphere is cozy with a touch of vintage charm, making it a great place to relax and enjoy an authentic meal. I’ll definitely be back!

Had the tasters menu + oysters. Really good choice - warmly recommended! The tasters is a very nice assortment that exposes you to a variety of Ukrainian dishes and customs. And the place looks good too. Priced affordable relative to western Europe.

Actually good. We tried Kiev chicken and grilled beef, some tomato salad and herring... Bill came at nearly 1000 hrn, so probably not super affordable, but... Location is nice, the place itself is very nice, service is good, and the bill itself felt kind of reasonable, not shocking, as sometimes is the case here... If you have tourist guests and need to take them to a place with good Ukrainian food, this one might be it. I would probably like more simple Ukrainian dishes on the menu, like the chicken Kiev was, but overall good.

We were shown to a table immediately because we had pre-booked days in advance for 6pm. The menu is online so we used our phones at the table. While we were selecting our meal we ordered drinks. Water and coffee arrived quickly, but I’d ordered fresh orange juice which didn’t arrive. We then ordered our food, I chose rabbit borscht. My partner chose vareniki. The waiting time was good and when our food arrived I was hungry and looking forward to tasting it. However what I received was a bowl of slightly warm brown water. Half a quails egg, 2 tiny fragments of potato less then 2cm cubed and a huge amount of dill. It was almost cold and there was zero meat. Nothing. Just water and dill. My partner ate less than half of her vareniki because it was dry, but she said it was very tasty. When we were finished the waitress returned and asked if we wanted desert. No thanks. But where is my orange juice? She said it was being prepared and then gave me the bill. Only then did I get my orange juice that I’d ordered when we’d arrived around 90 minutes before. You know when you order drinks before a meal they are supposed to arrive BEFORE the meal and not after you pay the bill… It was supposed to be a special day for us. My partner is Ukrainian. I’m English and speak Russian. Perhaps the waitress was offended when I spoke Russian to her, and maybe this is why I received warm water and not borscht. This was the reason we did not order desert and left quickly. It completely ruined our special day together.

My favourite restaurant in Kiev! I went here twice, and both times the meal was incredible and the service was so accommodating, nice and attentive. Can highly recommend the root salad (it doesn't sound like much but it is incredible and the cheese topping makes for a smoky show), and cherry dumplings for dessert!

Superb food with great playfulness (try the edible candles). Service is great with staff speaking good English. Live music increases the atmosphere in the already beautiful place, but if you want to talk, get a table in the charming side room. Costs more than most places in town, but well worth it.

I've chosen the place because of its good recommendations. First, the place is good, but not that great as lots of people write. Overall, it's a good place for Ukrainian food, and maybe other dishes are much better than the ones I had. The Kraut Vareniky were the best dish I ordered, very recommendable. The rest was nothing special.

I can definitely say that it is one of the best lamb meats I have ever eaten. The fact that it is crispy on the outside and cooked very well must be a separate skill. Apart from this, the rabbit meat borsch soup was also very successful. CiHo served as dessert is very light and delicious. a place that deserves a lot of thanks
