Italian All-Day Café Opening in Queen Village - Eater Philly

"The restaurant Konstantinos Pitsillides left behind when Kanella South closed earlier this year is in pretty good shape, with its elegant long bar, separate spacious dining room, and open kitchen." - Rachel Vigoda

This was one of the best meals I’ve had in the city. Everything was prepared perfectly. This was a top three salmon dish I’ve ever had in my life. Crispy, juicy, perfectly cooked. BYO.

Google
Kanella is an absolute gem. We’ve been twice in the past two weeks and already can’t wait to go back again. The Taste of Kanella menu is hands down our favorite date night option in Philly—phenomenal value for the quality and variety of dishes you get. The ribeye caps and chicken shish? Easily two of the best things I’ve ever eaten—perfectly seasoned, melt-in-your-mouth tender, and bursting with flavor. Every dish is thoughtfully prepared and arrives beautifully presented. The service is warm, welcoming, and attentive without ever feeling rushed. The BYOB option is just the cherry on top—it makes for the perfect, relaxed night out. Whether you’re celebrating something special or just want an incredible meal, Kanella delivers every single time. We’re already telling all our friends: do not sleep on this place.

We ordered the tasting menu to try different items. The hummus and halloumi were delicious.

Google
Mike was wonderful and all his recommendations were spot on and by far the best parts of the meal. Every bite was amazing and a happy explosion of tastes. I am not typically a dessert eater but I finished everything. Thank you for the most memorable birthday dinner

Google
We got the tasting menu which was not satisfying. There are many better Mediterranean restaurants in the city. The watermelon salad was just 4 big chunk of watermelon, once I asked where is the mint they just brought a bowl of mints for me. The pumpkin dessert is awful. Portion sizes are smaller when you order the tasting menu. Restrooms need major renovations. Sheppard Salad was hot!! Our server was fantastic though.

Google
The food was light and delicious. We were sat outside since there was an event hosted inside so it was a little busy. I am picky with rice and the white rice flavor was very good. We also requested 2 orders of fries which were more like wedges and the serving was quite small but the fries were fresh. We order grilled sea bass, chicken kebab and beef kebab. I would be interested to see if there is a dinner menu and I would be open to trying it.

Google
My absolute favorite place for Mediterranean food in Philly!! Everything is delicious and beautiful, and the staff are extremely attentive and friendly! Definitely feels like walking into a family restaurant. The hummus is some of the best I've ever had, the falafel was perfectly crispy, and the Adana lamb kebab was cooked to perfection. Everything was flavorful and fresh. The Turkish coffee is great too, perfect for an after-meal digestive, and is served in beautiful and unique cups. A warm, friendly, and delicious place, definitely worth a visit!

Google
Absolute insane meal. We did the tasting menu and would recommend that as you get a great portion and the ability to try lots of different app, especially if you’re sharing with others. I’m still thinking about the Brussels and rib eye cap. Will be back for this byob!!!

Yelp
Truly a favorite place of mine! Every time I go I'm always greeted by the friendly staff. The food is 10/10! I always have to get the shepherd salad it's my favorite

Yelp
We were in town and were craving Turkish food and this place popped up on a quick Yelp search. It had a delicious looking menu featuring some of my favorite Turkish dishes so we had to try it out. When we arrived, the restaurant was pretty packed, and although it was fairly cold there was only seating outside. We were willing to bare the cold just to try the place out. Onto the food! We did the Taste of Kanella option which I think is a great deal. We ordered the Muhammara, the Seared Halloumi, the Adana Kebab, the Manti, the Kunefe, and Baklava. It was a delicious feast. The Seared Halloumi was pretty good, but I like when it is more fried rather than seared. The sweet notes because of the dates were really good. The Muhammara was decent, but nothing memorable. The Manti was the star of the show. The dumplings were dressed in a delicious peppery sauce and there was a little bit of yogurt but I wish there was more sauce and yogurt (I ended up requesting a little more and it really enhanced the dish). The Adana Kebab was pretty good too, with the meat being tender and fairly flavorful. The desserts were also pretty good, with the Kunefe really standing out. I've never met a piece of Baklava I didn't like so that was also fairly delicious. Overall, I am glad I tried this place out and the Taste of Kanella is a great way to try several things on the menu and if you go with others you can easily make it a family style meal. I want to give a shoutout to our waiter because even though we were the only table outside, he came out fairly often to just check on us. He was super kind and friendly too. Although it was more of a 4 star dining experience in terms of the food for me considering there are so many amazing food options in this city, I would definitely still recommend this place.

Yelp
Food: The meat was well seasoned, smokey, and tender. The onions were pickled and paired well with the meat. Considering the price, I felt like it was not a lot of food. Service: Quick and attentive. We brought a cake and they cut and served it for us. Ambiance: Simple decor and spacious.

Yelp
This place is literally the best greek/mediterranean restaurant in philly and it's extremely affordable with a cozy vibe! The owner is absolutely one of the most kindest individuals. I was struggling to decide between two starters and he ended up giving me both for free. The salmon kabob is everything! I've got to visit again soon!

Yelp
I really love this place. I enjoy the intimate, bustling dining room, the steady, efficient service and of course, the delicious food. We landed here for my daughter's 19th birthday dinner. She and her boyfriend ordered up a couple of delicious kabob platters that came with rice. My daughter ordered the ground lamb with beef (adana) and her boyfriend ordered the ribeye cap. Both platters were excellent with shishito peppers, sumac onions and harrisa. I ordered the beef manti. These are delicate little dumplings with pepper, garlic and yogurt sauce. It was delicious. However, my daughter suggested we order the spanakopita for an appetizer (it is on the menu as an entree) and that was the best decision and the star-order of the night. This was delicious. Perfectly, flaky phyllo dough filled and layered with feta and spinach and onions with a herbaceous tomato, parsley salad on the side that compliments all that phyllo -goodness. We all three were delighted with this order and I recommend this as a starter to share before you order your choice of a kabab platter or anything else on the menu. We ended with baklava that tasted so well balanced with nuts and just the right amount of honey (I often find baklava too sweet but this was just right). I definitely recommend a reservation and a dinner out at Kanella! Don't forget your bottle because it is a BYO!

Yelp
Service terrible, falafel was way too salty. Nice atmosphere though. Would recommend kebabs over other dishes.

Yelp
AMAZING SERVICE!!! Our waiter was so kind and extremely patient with us! We took awhile to order because everything on the menu sounded so good! He patiently explained the menu and gave a lot of recommendations. For Meze, we ordered (1) Muhammara: a roasted pepper dip with walnuts and pomegranate molasses - I enjoyed this dip so much!!! It had a great smokey flavor (2) Basil Ezme: a goat cheese dip with avocado, walnuts, and pistachios - This tasted like pesto with a strong goat cheese flavor. - I enjoyed this, but if you don't like goat cheese then this one probably isn't for you. For our main, my friend and I split the Adana kebab (ground lamb). It came with rice and a roasted pepper. The roasted pepper was so delicious! I would definitely come back! Our waiter even gave us dessert on the house (two baklavas!) - It was so sweet :)

Yelp
An enjoyable experience with good food, but for some reason I didn't feel like it was super Greek. Reminded me more of general Mediterranean cuisine than feeling specifically Greek. But still, good experience. Service was quick. Ambiance was nice. The lamb was great and is highly recommended. And I loved that knefeh too. Salad was solid. Halloumi cheese was good too. Do attend

Yelp
I am KICKING myself for taking this long to check out Kanella. The service, the food, the price point... it is all worthy of 5 stars. On a Friday night, my friends and I decided we needed a GNO so we made a reservation at Kanella and brought our own bottles of wine. We sat inside because it's been disgustingly hot out, but they have outdoor seating, too! We opted to try the tasting menu and I am so glad we did. We were a group of 5 people total, so we got one of each meze. For our mains we did ground lamb, spanakopita, falafel, and chicken shish. For dessert we got one of everything and two kunefes.. because obviously. My meze favorites included the shepherd salad, hummus, muhammara, seared halloumi, and cyprus potato chips. The chicken shish was the best main by a long shot. The desserts were all hits, but my favorite was the kunefe. I loved this meal so much that on Saturday night I ordered takeout because I needed more of the hummus, shepherd's salad, and chicken shish. TLDR: Kanella is amazing, a BYOB, and worth every penny. Come with a group and try the tasting option so you can have one of every meze and most of the main options.

Yelp
I'm a big Kanella fan. It's one of my favorite byobs for dates or small groups (less than five). Their tasting menu is also banging, for only $45 and three courses including multiple appetizers. All dishes come out quick and our so fresh. We particularly love the salmon and chicken kebabs, so light but filling and tender. We also like the muhammara and the Brussels sprouts. Dishes come out super quickly, and the staff is all super personable!

Yelp
Had an amazing dinner at Kanellas with my family. Everything we ate was prepared perfectly and full of flavor. We loved everything we ordered, with the manti and kunefe being the standouts. The restaurant was comfortable, not too loud, and had great service.

Yelp
Was in town for a trade show and had food delivered to my hotel. The Falafel and Baklava, both pretty dang good and portions were generous also. The portions do make up for the higher cost of eating here, very worth it especially after a long day walking around. I would repeat!
google avatar

Yelp
Some of the most authentic Greek food I've had in America. The chef is from Cyprus and it shows. The Shepard's salad is beyond delicious. It's BYOB which is great for saving some money on alcohol. My waiter was amazing, I did not get his name but he wore glasses and had darker hair that was short and looked curly. Highly recommend this place to anyone and everyone.
google avatar

Yelp
3.x star generously rounded up Lamb kebab was tasty but for the price there isn't much there. Complimentary baklava. Atmosphere is good though the middle row tables can be awkward. Enjoy when they provide the water glass.
google avatar

Yelp
Still so delicious. Everything on the menu is well seasoned and portioned well to the point where you're not feeling heavy or super stuffed by the end of it.

Yelp
I'm glad we got a chance to stop by and try Kanella. The outdoor seating was a great spot to people watch and enjoy the weather. We started with a couple mezzes and split the kabeb. The value was good for the price and quality of the food. We enjoyed the mahamarrah the most and the bhakvala. The service was quick and waiter was friendly.

Yelp
Kanella is great - amazing service, awesome food, good vibes. Food-wise, we had the chicken shish and falafel platter for entrees, and the brussel sprouts and hummus as appetizers. The brussel sprouts in particular were outstanding, and the entrees were solid. My only critique there would be to include the cucumber/tomato Greek salad with all entrees - it came with the falafel and looked delicious, but did not come with the chicken shish. Service was also standout - everyone was kind and helpful, everything was quick and easy, and at the end of the meal they even gave us the pistachio baklava as a gift! Really exceptional service all around. I live super close to Kanella and have had it many times for takeout (always good) but going in person was even better. 5/5!!!

Yelp
I don't know how this place has flown under the radar! Or maybe I'm just living under a rock. Either way, very glad to have finally tried this place. My two friends and I did the taste of Kanella option- $42 per person for 2 apps, 1 entree, and 1 dessert each. I really recommend it. I can't remember all the apps we got, but the crispy brussel sprouts, muhammara, halloumi, and hummus were my favorites. For the entrees we got the sea bass, lamb kebabs, and beef special. We were all really pleased with our dishes. The portions were very generous so we had a ton of leftovers. For dessert, I highly recommend the kunefe. It was one of the best I've had. The vibes are casual but nice. It did get pretty loud later in the evening so maybe not the best place for a lot of conversation but that was fine for us since we were busy inhaling our food.

Yelp
Kanella has been on my list for too long. So glad I finally made it for a mid-holiday-season lunch! Our group of 4 took advantage of the Taste of Kanella prix fixe and were able to try all the Meze--our server* gifted us the Cyprus Potato Chips (shishito peppers, herbed yogurt, zaatar) so we could try them (and so very glad he did, as they were one of my favorite Meze!), too. Other favorite Meze offerings: Shepherd Salad (cherry tomatoes, cucumber, feta cheese, onion), which had some of the tastiest tomatoes I've had in a while, and lovely depth of flavor; Crispy Brussels Sprouts (carrot tarator, zaatar), which were well-seasoned; Beets with Yogurt (honey, arugula, walnut), which had a great balance of sweet, bitter, and nutty; Seared Halloumi (apricots, dates, walnuts), because how can one go wrong with seared cheese?! Also wanted to give a nod to the crispy chickpeas in the Hummus--loved the added texture! For my main, I chose the Falafel (ground fava and chickpea fritters, tahini) which were a good size, maybe a little drier than I was expecting, and paired well with the side salad (similar to the Shepherd Salad, but included red cabbage). And for dessert, I chose the Baklava (filo pastry, pistachios, walnuts), which was terrific--not too sweet! Will definitely return! *Terrific service--loved the guidance on ranking the Main dishes!

Yelp
Came here with a big group and we did the family style tasting menu. Every appetizer was a 10/10 would recommend, but my favorites were the halloumi, fries, brussel sprouts and the tomato cucumber feta salad with some tzatziki poured on top. Everything together was even better. I am conflicted about coming back here with less than 4 people because I want my pick of alllll of the appetizers again. The entrees were generously portioned and were a great value. The ribeye is fatty which I loved and cooked perfectly. The rice is fluffy and sweet with bits of apricot. A little bit more of that tzatziki on top wow yes please. The standout for me of the meal was the kunefe. It was my first time having it and I loved that it wasn't too sweet but had great texture. It reminded me a bit of mochi with its chewy texture and the phyllo bits were a pleasurable crunch. The baklava was crispy on top and sopping with syrup on the bottom. It was not my favorite baklava ever but was a great sweet note to end the meal with. The restaurant was comfortable and clean. The service was impeccable, with explanations for each dish and everyone's meals coming out well timed. Especially with our big group and the number of wine bottles we brought, it was a feat and we really appreciated the staff.

Yelp
We did the Taste of Kanella for $39 per person (2 meze, 1 main, 1 dessert). With all the meze we wanted to try it was worth it. My favorite were the Muhammara, Seared Halloumi, and Cyprus Potato Chips. The Beets with Yogurt gets an honorable mention. It was just overpowered by the other three but we enjoyed this too. Muhammara came with warm bread that we wiped the plate clean with. Seared Halloumi was unique and went really well with the sweet apricots. Cyprus Potato were crispy wedges with a nice mild yogurt and perfectly grilled shishito peppers. We both got the Ribeye Cap. Some pieces were touch. Others perfectly done with a bit of red inside. With rice pilav was really good. For dessert we got the: Kunefe (shredded filo, pistachios) - so sweet! Could not finish between the two of us. Brought the rest home. Semolina Helva (pismaniye, almonds) - enjoyed. Top was sweet but not too sweet. Bottom part was a bit bland but great mixed with the kunefe's sweetness Really enjoyed all our dishes and will definitely be back.

Yelp
I find myself coming back to Kanella because the meal is just so satisfying. I recommend the chicken kebab dish. Be sure to order the cucumber tomato salad, it pairs perfectly with a main dish. The chicken was tender and the rice was buttery -- I ended up ordering two plates of it!! The ambience inside and outside is great. Definitely check it out for a fresh and hearty meal.
google avatar

Michelle A.

Yelp
How lucky to have this welcoming corner local when visitors come to town. Service with a smile -- excellent baba never disappoints, and the spanikopita comes with a ginormous salad. Dream about the chicken shish. Lunch is chill, you'll get a table. And there are even outside tables for the polar bears.

Denny K.

Yelp
Externamente friendly waitstaff and excellent food! Quaint BYOB, great for family dinner or date night. 10/10 would recommend.
google avatar

Meredith R.

Yelp
This is a casual, bustling restaurant with a well-priced tasting menu and some delicious options. BYOB too! For $39 one gets two generous- sized appetizers (meze), an entree and dessert. Some choices, we soon realized, are better than others. Lentil kofte, served cold, was disappointing. Two in our party ordered it. Nobody wanted more than a bite. ( I bet it would be better fried, like falafel.) Crispy Brussels sprouts and seared halloumi are better choices. If you're with a group, you're best served ordering different meze and sharing what you get with the table -- particularly with spreads like mutabal, tzatziki, hummus and muhammara. I would pass up levrek -- sea bass -- as your entree. We had high hopes, but the portion was small and the fish lackluster. Next time Im going for the Adana kebab (ground lamb) which was beautifully seasoned and very tasty. (Note that this is coming from a person who generally doesn't like lamb!) Kunefe, traditionally prepared with sweet cheese, is delicious. Our waiter advised us that the chef was substituting chocolate for cheese. My friends who never had kunefe, thought it was excellent. I disagreed. A better choice -- that night anyway -- was baklava, with its buttery filo. It was a fun evening. Everyone was happy, satisfied and not overly stuffed. Now that we know what's what, we'll likely modify our selections next time. BTW, reservations are definitely recommended.

N. K.

Yelp
very fresh, delicious food and excellent service! we got a bunch of plates to share. i recommend all the eggplant dishes, the fish, chicken, hummus - really everything was good. i thought the falafel was a little bland. everything else including dessert was fantastic.
google avatar

Aslan A.

Yelp
One of my worst experiences, I placed an order. 1 hour after placing the order when I called to check on my status of order, they said they are out of one of kebabs and have to substitute it and said it will be delivered in 20-25 minutes. 45 minutes after this conversation, I still hadn't received any food snd after trying to call them for 15 minutes, eventually they answered and said the order was cancelled online but now miraculously (being sarcastic ) they see it again ( which is a total lie because if I wanted you cancel since it was placed thorough uber eats, I would be charged the full amount) and now they wanted me to wait another hour for the good that was placed 2 hours ago

Yelp
I can't believe I didn't eat at this place sooner! The restaurant have a unique and beautiful decor with with white and blue colors that's just perfect for a hot summer day, they have both outdoor and indoor seating to choice. The food were amazing, the watermelon salad was sweet and juicy, me and my friend enjoyed our entrees very much! Our waitress was so sweet, she was very attentive and even gave us a complementary dessert, we made sure to give her a nice tips (remember to tips your server!) Overall, just a great experience and we will definitely comeback!

Yelp
I had high hopes for Kanella. Let me start by saying that the food IS alright, but beyond mediocre and overpriced. I am from the Middle East and I grew up around this kind of food. I have also been to MANY middle eastern and Greek restaurants in Philadelphia, some pretty authentic places. This places just falls short. It is designed for Americanized/overpriced experience. $10 for a small app that's usually $7 at ANY other med place is a rip off. And it's not even that good. The pita is grocery store bought (and not the good kind) they charged $10 for 2 slices of halloumi. I thought for a second it was a joke. that's the portions. Their entrees include ONE skinny skewer and a small portion of rice. For $19 absolutely not worth it. I didn't even want to get the dessert after the apps and entrees. Do yourself a favor and don't waste your money. Philadelphia is filled with great Greek and middle eastern restaurants where you get way better quality for less money.

Yelp
Long before we lived in Philadelphia, we began our love affair with Mediterranean food. In particular, that is Turkish food. We have dear friends from Turkey who introduced us to some of their favorite dishes many years back, and it continues to be one of our favorite cuisines. Thankfully, Philly has a number of restaurants that fit the bill on this category. Kanella is definitely one of the best restaurants when I think of my overall criteria for what makes a good experience - good ambiance, great service, and quality food. It's a cute spot, very clean, well lit (not sitting in a dark nightclub vibe which some local restaurants give off). I love that they have a nice sized menu with not needing to go all Cheesecake Factory and overdo it. They have many things that we really enjoy - their hummus is great (some of the best IMO) and the halloumi app. We love their Adana - it's tied for my favorite in town. And the kunefe - that alone would keep me coming back. So good. The service - it's some of the best if you ask me. Attentive, fast, kind - and it's clear they have a passion for what they do and put out of the kitchen. Throw in the fact that its BYOB and this makes for a great date spot, too. We will certainly keep frequenting this delicious spot. Kudos to the entire Kanella team for a job so well done!

Sophia J.

Yelp
The good: Chicken shish and brussel sprouts were delicious! The servers were also nice and service was quick. The so-so: The halloumi was ok. The cheese was a bit rubbery and a bit bland. There was a couple of small dollops of apricot which actually would have made the cheese better if there was more of it. The pita bread had a nice char flavor to it, but was very dry. The not so-good: The falafel was very dry and there needed to be a lot more of the sauce. The salad that came with it did not have enough dressing. Lunch wasn't terrible, but for the money, I was definitely expecting a lot better.

Yelp
This place was such a wonderful surprise! I think I came here about 5 years ago and didn't really remember anything about the experience, but I went last night and was thoroughly impressed with the experience. We started with a bunch of thé mezze and they were all delicious. I really recommend the Haloumi and the tzatziki, but everything was tasty. It was served with warmed pita as well, which was a nice touch. For main courses, it was all kebabs. The meat and fish were both tender and the rice on the side had a great texture. My only complaint, but I think it's because it was a Friday night, is that it does get a bit loud and after a certain point you can barely hear your dining companions due to the noise. Service was timely. But the best part of the night was dessert, you have to save room for the kunefe, it may have been one of the best desserts I have ever tried - sweet, but not overly so and almost savory, highly recommended!

Yelp
Kanella Grill has been on my list for a while to try. I'm so happy I finally went because everything was so freakin' good. It's really cute on the inside with a calm atmosphere and smells amazing as soon as you walk in. Service was quick. We ordered the grilled shrimp, falafel platter, and spanakopita. Lovedddd the flavor of the shrimp, although a bit pricey for 3 (but then again shrimp is always expensive). I'm not a fan of falafel but this one took me away - I really liked it and they give so much rice, salad, pita with the meal. The spanakopita was my favorite, I loved every single bite with the flaky pastry. I'll definitely be coming back and bringing my friends to try it out!

Yelp
I can't understand all the good reviews here. Went for lunch on a Saturday with my mom. Started off with the eggplant appetizer, which really didn't have much flavor. On a positive note, it was served with some nice hot pita bread. I had the chicken shish kebab and she had the lamb kebab. The chicken was 4 small pieces of chicken thighs. Kebabs should be nice chunks of chicken breast, but instead they chose to use the cheaper thighs. Her lamb was a small serving of over seasoned/salty dried out ground lamb. Both came with rice, but nothing else, so definitely not worth the $20 price today for a lunch entree. We had eaten there before the pandemic and at the time the food was good, but I hear ownership has changed. Would not recommend going.

Yelp
Superb neighborhood joint good for groups or individual dining for Mediterranean options. They recently changed owners but happy to say the cooking is still delicious. We got 4 apps, 4 mains and one dessert to share amongst 4 people and it was perfect. If going for a very gourmet experience can consider their tasting menu!

Yelp
I have not been to Kanella in years. We had 8:15 reservations for Saturday 12.10.22. I learned from our server that they have been under new ownership for about a year. We were greeted warmly and service was more than satisfactory. I love a good byob. The food was fresh and well-seasoned. I am giving four stars simply because it didn't blow my socks all the way off and neither of us are huge fans of Mediterranean desserts. The Semolina Helva certainly was unique. Neither of us have seen pismaniye before. My caramelized pumpkin was literally what appeared to be a sweet wedge of butternut squash with some tahini and sesames (I believe that is all I saw no walnuts?) sprinkled on top. It was interesting but not quite what I wanted in a dessert. Granted, I didn't quite know what to expect. I look forward to making different selections next visit. **Shepherd Salad cherry tomatoes, cucumber, feta cheese, onion **Crispy Brussels Sprouts carrot tarator, zaatar **Seared Halloumi apricots, dates, walnuts **Spanokopita feta and spinach pie, spring onions **Levrek seabass, raddish, arugula, onions **Semolina Helva pismaniye, almonds **Caramelized Pumpkin tahini, walnut Overall, a great byob to try out for worthwhile Mediterranean food.

Yelp
Freshest (Sheppard) salad I've had since moving to Philadelphia 5 months ago. The guys working lunch were great. Super clean restaurant. Hummus was super flavorful. Pomegranate tea was naturally sweet and delicious

Yelp
Great, top notch service, good food. BYOB, with unique offerings. We shared the ground lamb kabob and spanikopita. Bathrooms were a little dirty. Overall good experience, but the place could use some updating. Pillows on seats were kinda old, etc.

Yelp
Amazing food and such a good deal! Staff: was so friendly and kind! Even gave us extra dessert and app. They really made the whole experience Food: all of it was delicious and the tasting menu is such an amazing deal. 39 dollars a person for two apps, one entree and dessert each. Everything was excellent but my faves were definitely the halloumi and the kunefe dessert. The best part it's byob:) Such a fun place for small groups! I will definitely be back.

Yelp
IMPORTANT - ignore ALL PHOTOGRAPHS before late 2022. They do not resemble ANYTHING CLOSE to what is currently served here. There are no wraps, no large servings, NONE OF IT. The menu consists of very few options at this point, and if you're looking at things like hummus for $6 back in 2020, forget it. Those days are long gone. I am baffled by the five star reviews for this place. They must be from skinny rich people. The food here, in terms of taste, is middling to good. So in terms of quality? No complaints. The portion sizes are insultingly small. The main dishes are all kebab style (served off of the skewer) and you get four TINY pieces of meat. Literally teeny tiny pieces of meat, served with a scoop of rice and a teeny portion of something like grilled onions. For $19. It's the amount of food you would expect to pay $8 for at a food struck on the street. On the plus size you get unlimited pita bread, though you have to kind of cajole them into giving it to you, and they do bring out a piece of baklava for everyone in your party for free (whether you want it or not.) But this simply cannot make up for the measley portions of food. The apps are generally the same issue. If you want what amounts to 1/5th of a tub of store bought hummus for $9, you're in luck. So the bottom line truly is that if you are willing to throw your money away and leave still hungry, Kanella is the place for you.

Yelp
Kanella has been around for a while and I'm glad it's still here (I was so sad when Kanella South closed). The food at Kanella is always consistently good and the service is always great. Compared to most restaurants, the food here is lightly seasoned (i.e. not salty), which I appreciate. I usually get the chicken shish or the adana (lamb) kebab. Love their beet salad and tzatziki as well. Portions are a bit on the small side for the price point, but the food is still worth trying.

Yelp
I was disappointed that my entree I ordered wasn't what was described on the menu. I actually specifically ordered two dishes for their yogurt mint dressing and didn't get it. My mini meatballs didn't have the jogget dressing and when I asked later he disappeared and came back later to tell me they should have taken it off the menu/reprinted an updated menu because they weren't serving the jogget sauce anymore. When I said I was bummed because that was why I selected those dishes he didn't offer an option to replace or do anything further and just shrugged. Also the grilled octopus arm was great but the salad underneath had a bunch of yellow arugula salad leaves which again is a quality issue if you're serving some old leaves underneath a small dish. It's quite obvious. Disappointed to pay $100 for everything

Yelp
I've been here several times now and have never been anything other than impressed! The food is always well seasoned, cooked perfectly, and served in great portions. The servers are all incredibly friendly,

Yelp
I am surprised by how many stars this place has. I just had a very overpriced and disappointing falafel lunch there. The falafels were like little grainy, sandy hockey pucks and almost inedible. The server was nice and did bring us some pita and hummus on the house when we explained that we couldn't eat them without some sauce. Sorry, I don't recommend this place given its price point.

Yelp
On a special visit to see our daughter, who enjoys Eastern Mediterranean food, she recommended Kanella. As we walked a few blocks to this restaurant located near the campus of Jefferson Medical College, we were warmly greeted and seated by Pedro. As we were provided water, we noticed that all the patrons appeared to be enjoying the ambience and their food. We ordered three mezzo dishes (i.e. halloumi, muhammara, hummus), three main dishes (i.e. laurek (2), chicken shish), and two desserts (i.e. kunefe, baklava) that was enough for four adults. As the four of us enjoyed the food family style, we were a little concerned that we ordered enough food as each dish came out for us to share. The combination of flavors and tastes of each dish were good. We now have a go to place each time we come back out to Philadelphia and want a good place for Mediterranean food.

Yelp
Kanella was great. Food was amazing, we got the eggplant dip, hummus, salmon kebab, spanokopita, and baklava and loved it all. The service was great as well. The resy page had tons of availability when I checked earlier in the day so I didn't book a reservation, but it was pretty crowded and had to wait about 40 mins once I got there (about 8pm Friday night) so I would recommend making a reservation. Definitely will be back!!!

Yelp
New management and new menu and you can absolutely feel how much greater this place has become. The new menu is a hybrid between Greek and Turkish food. We ordered the taste of Kanella, and for $39 we were super full and all the plates we got were spot on. We especially loved their Adana kebab and Kunafeh! Both the chef and the manager came out to each table to make sure service and food were to our liking and we really appreciated the personal touch. Our server was personable and very helpful. Would definitely be back to try more of the new menu!
