"Kanpai has made some of the best sushi in Bend for 18 years, and the new head sushi chef, Luke Baker, has taken it up a notch. While the menu items are excellent, letting Baker take the reigns will get you such delights as hamachi with tempura-fried jalapeños in a Thai chile vinaigrette. Or order the suggestively named Orgasm, a roll of tempura unagi, crab, and cucumber topped with a creamy sauce, fresh scallop, and avocado, plus a drizzle of sweet soy reduction. Don’t miss the slightly seared filet mignon nigiri with melted rich uni butter and house-made wasabi. Choose an eight-course omakase and get an extraordinary house-made ice cream and cheesecake dessert with crispy eel, freeze-dried honey, and various sauces. The ganache sauce with peanut butter chocolate ice cream adds the perfect touch for chocolate lovers. Reservations are recommended." - Barb Gonzalez, Jeffrey Stull

An unfortunate experience. This restaurant is probably just fortunate that people don’t know the food could be better. We really looked forward to enjoying many of the items on the menu but the restaurant was so busy we ordered Takeout; Agedashi Tofu, Hamachi Kama, salmon nigiri, tempura etc. What was served as the Agedashi Tofu was absolutely not how this dish is typically prepared. Fried, thin slices of firm tofu? The batter was hard and chewy. The soup base for the tofu and the dipping sauce for the Tempura were in confusing containers for the portion sizes needed. We ordered two servings of rice; what we received was a portion enough for one bowl and it had soy sauce on parts of the rice, like it was leftover rice or had been used for something else. The order of Rainbow Roll had been packaged to-go, but someone drizzled Soy Sauce on top so when we got home (5 minutes away) the rice was all soggy, and the rolls fell apart. The Hamachi Kama was decent - I’d say a little dry but it had good flavor. The most disappointing was the Nigiri which had most likely been prepared hours in advance but left out without being covered, so the fish was dried out and had no rich umami flavor. Overall, incredibly disappointing especially for the $200 price point our order totaled. I’d strongly recommend taking better care of your ingredients, packing orders to go properly so they arrive fresh and not soggy. I’d rethink the Agedashi tofu dish and please use medium-firm tofu… If someone orders rice please don’t pour soy sauce on top.

It’s been several years since I’ve been here. Had a guest from out of town due to a family emergency and wanted to make a bad day better. It was later in the evening and we were finally relaxed after a massage. Called to be courteous and ask if 8:30 was too late as they were closing at 9. The manager went into detail about how they were short staffed and really wanted to close early. We asked if take out would be okay and he reluctantly said yes. Both settled on a $35 poke bowl each. Paid the $70 and gave them a tip as he reminded us what an inconvenience this was. I asked if his name was on the receipt so we could thank him in a review, he gave an awkward look in the bag and said yes. Once home, we opened the containers to find about 1/3c of poke mix, 1/3c seaweed, and a handful of stale chips. I understand prices have increased, but not to this level. When I called to say we were not okay with the order and I would like to come to an agreement, he said they have an old POS system and he was only able to refund the entire amount. I said I did not want that and also wanted to leave the tip for the staff. He said again that could not be done. He literally told me that he would have to refund the entire amount and not to worry - he would “deal with the repercussions” and reminded me that they went out of their way to make sure we got food at all, even though they didn’t have a dishwasher. I wish he had said no to us getting an order at all and we had not had this bad experience to cap off a sad day. Too bad the reviews on Bend Foodies Facebook group and other sites are true - I didn’t want to believe my once fav is now a permanent memory, but I refuse to be treated this way. Still don’t know Dude’s name because we never got that receipt he pretended to glance at in the bag…

Google
Cannot say enough good things about Kanpai. Specifically the omakase, absolutely worth it to let the chef take you in his arms and deliver you the best sushi in Bend. The flavor concoctions that they curate for the omakase are always unimaginably delicious. Drooling sitting here writing this review. Besides the overwhelmingly delicious food, the staff and ambience is just as good. Kanpai is a quaint neighborhood sushi joint, which I would highly recommend reservations for, especially for omakase. Staff is always so kind, fun, and attentive. Highly recommend.

Google
A great spot for sushi nestled on Bends Westside. Fresh fish and great tastes that have a local flair. Three food was great with above average service. Pricing was as expected for quality of ingredients. Cocktails were prepared with fresh ingredients. Atmosphere is mildly upscale and well behaved family friendly. Parking is kinda challenging at times. Reservations recommended.

Google
This place is incredible! Chef Luke puts out some of the freshest and most unique sushi flavors I've had. This is the sushi I've been looking for in Bend. Definitely found our new go-to!

Google
We came in right at opening time, so we were able to snatch a spot at the bar. The service was amazing, and the food was great. My wife loves uni, but they were sold out. However, some time later, the chef surprised us with an order of uni. And it was on the house!

Google
I've eaten here twice for omakase (bar seating, tasting menu style). It's definitely pricey ($135/pp), but I'd suggest Kanpai as the best restaurant in Bend. The quality of food, presentation, and flavor is exceptional. Both occasions here were memorable, and I'll certainly return at some point.

Google
The sushi is good. The ramen is just okay. The whiskey is overpriced. First time going to a sushi restaurant in Bend and I will say I had an enjoyable experience. The service is great and I really enjoyed the overall experience but I would recommend sticking to the sake and the beer and the sushi. I really enjoyed the vegetarian options on the sushi menu. The Godzilla roll especially was popular with the vegetarians at the table. I was also impressed by the Harley David-san (great name😂) roll. I really wasn't sure about the nuts in the roll but I actually really liked it. There are really some interesting rolls on the menu. The presentation on the Caterpillar though! Top notch! Overall I had a great time here and I would come back.

Yelp
Best sushi place in Bend. Well worth the $$$ Ordered too much to describe here, but everything was delicious. Sat at the sushi bar and the chef was preparing our food and giving it to us right at the table while explaining what we were having. Really good experience!

Carl S.

Yelp
Top five sushi experience of my life. Absolutely delicious! I was in town for business and my customer suggested this place for sushi but told me I may need a reservation. It was a Wednesday. I went at 5 PM when they open the doors and was lucky to get the last spot at the sushi bar. Prices are higher than other sushi restaurants but you get what you pay for. This place is top shelf! Salmon sashimi was phenomenal as was the Kanpai roll and an unnamed special roll.

D K.

Yelp
Delicious sushi and a large menu. Lots of creative rolls. Friendly service too. Will definitely come back next time we're in Bend.

Stewart S.

Yelp
Great sushi joint! First rate sushi, w/ an authentic inside decor. The wai staff is a little stiff. They don't seem to like their job (especially the hostess) The food pushed it to four stars.

Joe P.

Yelp
Service was good and our waitress was very nice! Sushi was OK to me but $$$ for OK Sushi...but the thing that burned me was this convenience fee I had to pay! No mention of it on there website and no mention by our server. If someone would have mentioned it then ok but none so that to me is dirty pool.

Alan R.

Yelp
server was pleasant..BUT wait for main order was excessive. as I was about to go inside, hostess come out to ask how things were.. I asked did you forget about us?... food came out minute later!!! I eat Sushi OFTEN...NEVER a wait like this!!! fishwas fine, BUT certainly overpriced for the quantity. PS. visitor from NY..don't characterize me please...But I do eat out A LOT; and I don't think I have ever reviewed any restaurant before..But this needed it !!!

Lilith K.

Yelp
We indulged in Kanpai this past Wednesday and it was fabulous. We ate so much sashimi , spicy tuna rolll abs special of the evening the fish was so fresh and delicious . We ate outside where it was quiet . Everyone who attended to us was friendly and so kind. Special shout out to the manager Martha for helping me on the phone with some questions I needed assistance with . The service was amazing( a bit of a rarity these days ) and food outstanding . Not sure I can have sushi anywhere else now.

Yelp
Well things change and we notice. Change is not always a bad thing and sometimes required to stay in business and I get that. However great service, more expensive menu, and plated quality nowhere near what it used to be is not a good change. YELP Short Answer: If you're not a longtime patron maybe you won't notice and it will just be expensive ok Japanese food, so Yes. Having been going here since they opened, it is disappointing to see the downgrade in presentation, food quality but more expensive just does not float my boat. Location: Still great, terrible Newport parking but you will figure it out. Menu: Great offering Food Prep: Not what is was. presentation was two rolls ($15 & $20) shoved on a small plate, looked lake a Wasen House cheap plate snarf or grab and go. Food Quality: Was not great, not bad but just stuff wrapped in rice very little actual taste, the rice was done well. Don't like to keep on the past, but their rolls were amazing as was the presentation and the chefs were always the same... now all now faces. Change happens. Waitstaff: Perfect, they are fantastic and service was faster than it has ever been. Overall Value: Yikes, no $130 for two people. Doubt we will be back anytime soon and wish the new owner the best, he is very nice, but Bend Westside deserves a higher-end experience. It is not how much it cost, it is about not caring about how much it cost because it was so incredible.

Yelp
We'll get to the delectable food in a moment - first, I'd like to praise the friendly, yet professional, staff we encountered on 8/2/23. Showing up nearly on the dot for our reservation (4 people, 2 first-timers), the hostess promptly showed us to our table inside with a smile... despite being a Wednesday night, Kanpai was utterly packed & loud - with what appeared to be 3 female servers lithely floating among all tables/bar with applaudable composure & grace. As a former service industry professional, this did not go unnoticed! We had the delight of being taken care of by Masha - I can't compliment enough how pleasant, positive, polite, & attentive they were without being overbearing. Masha took the time to discuss & recommend fantastic sake, while Michelle overheard there was a birthday at the table & even brought a taster-round with a birthday candle! The hospitality was truly felt by us & our guests as those two treated the night as special as it felt to us who were celebrating. *bonus points for the cute handmade party hat* The folks preparing our sushi were also impressively stoic throughout the rush (7-9p), turning out gorgeous (and super tasty) plates of food. Kudos for the kindness of keeping fish separate from the vegetarian's dishes! Overall - stoked to have taken my pals in for a mellow celebratory night & to have felt special despite a full house of others who also visibly received excellent service & care.

Yelp
I would say, overall, sushi is good and the rolls were creative. You can tell the fish is a good quality thus 4 stars. The Yakuza roll with seared steak on top was delicious, would recommend that. Where Kanpai didn't shine was in the hot foods. Miso soup was fine but the agedashi tofu wasn't great. I prefer soft tofu vs the firm and the broth was kind of bland and though I'm used subtle broths in this dish, there wasn't much flavor here. The salmon kama was a really generous portion and you could tell that it was good quality but it came out pale. If they had broiled it to give it more color and texture would have tasted much better. Service was good and friendly.

Sahra K.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing! The food was incredible, but what I'm really impressed by is the service. We had originally come planning to do a chef's omakase, but I neglected to share im vegetarian beforehand. While we couldn't do omakase, the staff was quick to recommend a lot of alternative rolls and options to have a great time. The atmosphere is so fun -- very small and busy! 10/10 recommend sitting at the counter. We'll be back!

Yelp
Having tried all the sushi locations in Bend. I think this has the best sushi. Good variety, excellent service. It is a small dining area so I'd recommend reservations during the weekends, holidays and summer. I take my family (4 ppl) here about once a month pr so. Never had a bad experience. Martha makes an excellent Old Fashion so don't hesitate to try to bar cocktails. Parking can get tight if they get busy.

Yelp
Came to Bend mountain biking. After a super fun ride came here for dinner. All the sushi miso soap and salad was yummy. Service was warm and friendly. Nice outdoor dining. My wife is Japanese and she enjoyed everything. oishī!

Barb W.

Yelp
Excellent sushi. Good service. We always enjoy going there. Highly recommend. Environment is incurring and not too noisy

Yelp
Kanpai was our favorite sushi in Bend when we lived here 12 years ago. We just moved back home. Tonight our sushi chef Luke created a "chef special sashimi" and it was literally the BEST sushi we have ever had in our entire life. What a beautiful evening. What a beautiful dish. An amazing experience. Just blown away.

Henry S.

Yelp
Sushi is one of those deeply personal experiences. I've seen some bad reviews of Yelp. But those reviews are not consistent with our experience at the restaurant. My wife and I went there for an early dinner last night at about 5pm. We opted for the omakase, which left our selection to the chef. What distinguishes omakase from a pre file menu is omakase is adjusted and improvised according to the chef. Our meal was fabulous. The fish and proteins were great and well respected by the chef. The chef and servers were very attentive to us as well. From course to course, I could see the chef was clearly thinking about the next dish. We appreciate his thoughtfulness. The cost of the omakase is $120 per person. We received 8 separate dishes. There is a sake pairing for an addition $70, which we skipped. The omakase requires a reservation. We made a mistake and didn't have reservations. But because we went early the chef and staff accommodated us. We would definitely go back.

Robb H.

Yelp
I really feel like this is the definitive sushi spot in Bend, all others fall very short. This is a neighborhood place, and you will meet some great people here, both staff and guests. I am a "fish snob" for sure, they won't let ya down!

Melissa F.

Yelp
If I could give this restaurant 10000 stars I would! We sat at the sushi bar and had the best time. Our cocktails (pink lady and the Kanpai punch) were delicious. We had the pleasure of chatting with the executive chef who was so funny and charming, he gave us phenomenal recommendations. The fish was SO fresh (the uni is a must!!) and they have super creative rolls you won't see anywhere else. If you don't order the collar (we had the sea bream) you will live to regret it - we were licking the plate. You also can't leave without a scoop of their homemade ice cream. We had the burnt honey miso and our eyes were in the back of our heads. YUM! It's a toss up which was better - the food or the staff. We will be back again!!!!!

Alfred S.

Yelp
Too noisy! Took forever to get our food and the waitress was unapologetic! Not enough salt on the edamame! Rolls only okay! Prices go up, quality goes down! Sigh!

Claire W.

Yelp
Me and my boyfriend saved our money to go out to what I thought would be a nice dinner here. First we paid $21 just for our reservation 10 per person and an extra dollar for god knows what. We get there and get sat at the worst table in the entire place it was round and could barely fit our menus and waters. The spot the table was in was crammed I couldn't even pull my chair out to sit down because it was already touching someone else's. We sit down to order and find out they're out of salmon so we just order green tea to start they come and tell us they're out the server was nice she brought us another tea on the house which I appreciate. But at this point we just wanted to leave. We only ordered one roll, we just wanted to get out of there and go somewhere else because of how uncomfortable the table was. That one $20 roll took a whole hour to come out and wasn't anything special. With how expensive it is to eat here I expected the experience to be more enjoyable. We also were charged for a random service fee which is a little ridiculous to me because of how long it took and how terrible the experience was. The ambiance also wasn't anything special honestly the Cheesecake Factory is more visually appealing it wasn't bad just again not worth the price, the wait, and the uncomfortable crammed seating. If you go here DO NOT bother with reservations because you'll pay $20 for a terrible table when there are plenty of other much better empty tables. After we left we ordered okawa which was more than worth the price. Overall a big waste of our time and money.

Laura M.

Yelp
My only regret about Kanpai is not having eaten here sooner! We came in for date night and sat at the sushi bar. The entire experience was fantastic. The rolls were flavorful but delicate, the atmosphere was quaint and lovely, and all of the staff had great energy. Definitely our new go-to sushi restaurant in Bend and I can't wait to go back!

Alpenglow Vacation R.

Yelp
Delicious sushi, great service, every time over the last 19 years. Large menu selection, specials to tantalize your taste buds. My kids and I have enjoyed this Bend locally owned and operated restaurant since it has opened. My now "adult" children continue to go and enjoy all they have to offer, and when they visit, they want to go! Depending on the night of the week, you might find yourself able to sit at the sushi bar, which is fun to watch the chefs do their thing. Beautiful and thoughtful presentation. We recommend to all of friends and family, and guests as well. Check it out, your taste buds will thank you!

Lori A.

Yelp
Came here last night with my husband and daughter and spent over $120 and we all left hungry. The food took so long, at least an hour. We all ordered the special roll, which turned out to be pretty bad. I'm not very picky with sushi but the sauce ruined the roll, I had to try to dab it off with a napkin. The other rolls we ordered were also sub par. We ate the sushi because we were so hungry and left to go straight to the grocery store for more food because no one was full. The only good part about the meal was the service, our waitress was great. But would never recommend this restaurant. It was so frustrating to be waiting an hour for food and then to look over and see the man rolling sushi chatting and laughing with his friends sitting at the bar while we sat and waited. Overall, horrible experience. Bad sushi. Extremely long wait times with a half full restaurant. Don't come here.

Stefanie O.

Yelp
We had high hopes of this being our new go-to sushi place but everything we tried was completely underwhelming and we left hungry, $140 later. The rolls came with very little fish and everything we tried just lacked flavor. We ordered a negi-hama roll, the Kanpai roll (zero flavor), the High Roller (one-note, all sweet), Spicy Tuna (not spicy), and the special roll of the evening (green veggies with VERY little albacore on top for $19). The nigiri special "Slammin' Salmon" was a huge disappointment being $16 for two bites (one of which was miniscule) and lacking any kind of noteworthy flavor. Everything lacked seasoning, and no, I don't believe that fancy rolls should need to take a swim in soy sauce in order to taste like something. On the plus side, my cocktail was nice (The Prickly Lady) and the homemade berry ice cream was pretty good, but other than that this meal was disappointing. Two stars because nothing we ate was awful, it was all very fresh... they just skimped on the fish and everything tasted watered-down.

John L.

Yelp
If atmosphere and service were edible, I'd give this 5 stars. But on food alone - 2 stars at best. We were really hoping that this place would be better and kinda hoped that the low average rating was more about how expensive it was rather than the food itself, but honestly this place is just not good. Bland appetizers (I mean come on - not even enough salt on the edamame and the agedashi tofu was completely flavorless), the sashimi special was really fishy (weird for a supposedly "fresh" special) and the two special rolls we had (samurai and tsunami) were just not special at all. So sad because the place is so cute but we will definitely not be back though the staff was really sweet. And, while I hate to add this because I hate places getting bad reviews just because they are expensive, $150 for 2 apps, 2 rolls, and a couple beers is crazy expensive for what we got.

Aimee N.

Yelp
Husband and I reserved the Omakase dinner, and it was well worth the price. Every course was delicious and it is fun to watch all of the other rolls being made. Ambiance and service are top notch. Note: this is not an experience to try to rush. We were there for almost 2.5 hours, and would have been happy to stay longer. The head chef is super fun to talk to. Top 3 life meal.

Robin S.

Yelp
- Very good sushi - Yakuza roll was just OK but it probably wasn't what I should have ordered. - Very good seaweed salad apps (they have two varieties). - Great service. - No ramen available on first visit. They screwed up earlier in the week and ran out (it takes over a day to make the broth). We're short on ramen options in this town so I'll definitely try again. - Very small space which gets loud when busy.

Ethan B.

Yelp
Yes it is goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood heheheha

Felicia V.

Yelp
Wish i could give 0 stars. rude staff, the photo i posted is of a roll advertised to also have tuna and goat cheese in it. they were cheap about ingredients and acted annoyed whenever we asked for anything. had to soak everything we ordered in soy sauce because it had no flavor. my friend ordered the poke bowl and for $30 dollars got 1/8 of a bowl full of food.

Richard H.

Yelp
After falling off Mount Bachelor five times today, (mountain biking), I need some energy for tomorrow and what better food can you ask for than sushi. So I stopped into Kanpai. I was able to get there just after opening so I asked the chef to prepare what he wanted to create. Yes more toward Japanese style ( American don't like fish taste so most drown sushi in sauces or deep fry it or some part), which is typically basic that says less is more. Charlie is my chef tonight and he has been working there for three nights. Well, this is his return to Kanpia. He has been working in sushi for over ten years. Off the menu dishes he created was jalapeño poppers stuffed with tuna and, yes, tempura dipped and fried. Yep, still good. Next he created what he called Chuck Norris. He would not explain what's in it but it was kick ass. I'm sorry but the next roll he created did not name but it had some mango for sweetness. Maybe that's the name simple sweetness. Charlie, thanks for all the great sushi. ----------------------------------- 2018 I'm still going here for great sushi. I have been reading other reviews and it comes down to love it or hate it. Most haters are take out or tables probably ordering California rolls. I just want to say a few things. The place gets packed almost every night. If you are not early you'll have to wait. If you are not at the sushi bar ordering Omakase then you are not ordering the best they have to offer. But they have limited seating at the sushi bar and it's first come first served. No reservation at the bar. These guys do get very busy. It's a small place for a reason. They want to keep it small in order to serve their customers properly. In most cases they serve them well. Other cases it's a fluffy ruffle from LV with a tiny dog for a picture. A typical tourist. But in their defense, it is a tourist town. They expect the world and if the wait staff was rude, it's probably because you wanted their attention NOW! Over the past 5 years I've been here two to four times a year. Yes. They get very, very busy. Relax, slowdown. Enjoy the company with the person you bring, chat and have fun. Omakase is the only way to go. Don't order stuff like you are at the sushi track. Get there early for a seat at the bar. Last time I was there I was mountain biking with a friend. We went on Friday night and got lucky to get the last two seats at the bar. My buddy loved the Omakase so much we came back the next day. Sushi overload, he called it. Great rides, good friends and great sushi equals a wonderful weekend.

Scout W.

Yelp
Kanpai's sushi is always good. They is have good specials and their vegetarian menu is amazing. One of the best in Bend and the ambience is amazing.

kelsea c.

Yelp
Wow! Best sushi I have ever had. Can't believe it took me so long to find this gem! The service tonight was FANTASTIC! I can't remember the lady's name who served us but she was amazing. Could not have been a better experience! Everything was SO fresh. 10/10.

Lera S.

Yelp
Late review. This was couple a weeks ago. Ordered four sushi rolls. Got only three. Told them we ordered four...they questioned me....yes I think I know how many sushi rolls I ordered. Mmm $13+ ‍ The server questioned me then he went and questioned the other server anddddddd the itamae...gave me the check with the four rolls. Mmm thanks.

Stacey G.

Yelp
Great people and friendly service. They're doing a great job on the social distancing too! Some of the better drinks around

James C.

Yelp
Upon leaving Kanpai I feel as though I just got cheated out of $85. The food had no flavor and was priced 2-3 times has high as it should have been. I was shocked when the rolls arrived at the table to see that they were half rolls! Who does that?! I paid 12 dollars for half of a sushi roll. The 18 dollar ramen was flavorless and pitiful. The service was ok but the food was so subpar I feel that It is my duty to warn potential future customers. Extremely disappointed with taste of food, quantity of food, and price. Will not return.

Graham K.

Yelp
Our favorite restaurant in Bend. The Nigiri is always top notch. It's the perfect place for a chill Friday night with friends.

Tres T.

Yelp
Been here off and on for years. Can no longer recommend for any dish or occasion. Came for a birthday dinner tonight. Portions were massive and not in a good way. Nothing was delicate. Nothing was for the educated palate. The sashimi was slimy. The filet sashimi was chewy and I think a low grade piece of steak. The shrimp tempura at 5 fusion is 10x batter. This was dry, chewy. Batter was heavy. The miso soup was nice and edamame was par. The other $275 of items we literally sent to the trash and left and went to Zydeco to start over.

Kasey W.

Yelp
Went in for a birthday dinner with three people, walked in and was walked past by two people, then told we would be seated in a minute. After ten minutes of waiting we were told it'd be a few more minutes but we were asked to stand behind the curtain and wait.... if anyone knows, the curtain waiting area is quite small. Frustrated with being asked to stand in a five foot space with three people. Also, there were five tables free inside and one outside. Beyond disappointed.

Scott P.

Yelp
Average to slightly below average food Overpriced sushi a and less than the best quality. After six visits in the past year - I can't return. How is it happy hour sushi with two glasses of wine and desert costs $110? It's not the expense, it's the lack of value and quality. Nothing special except it's Westside - Newport Ave location. A case of "too many dollars chasing a convenient dining location" when traffic is high on a Wednesday at 5:45pm Next time, take the time to head into town....because this ain't inspirational, or satisfying. Almost as bad an experience as Washington Eatery in NWX....but not quite as bad Hey all, let's support the quality restaurants offering unique food, fresh ingredients, interesting preparation for a fair price. Just because you call it happy hour doesn't mean it's a meal with value. And "no offense intended" to those who love this restaurant, it's (in my opinion) far from a quality sushi restaurant. And overpriced just to add a little insult. It's not a worthwhile trip, and that's saying something because my office was previously across the street! Sorry no photos - to blah to be inspired.

Lindsay N.

Yelp
Delicious "fancy" sushi. Great for a date. Fantastic number of vegan and gluten free options. If you're not used to how expensive sushi is, try going for happy hour

Kym T.

Yelp
Our first experience here was with their HH. Prices are maked down, but marked down to the amount where you think that should be the normal price. They are in prime location and one of the few sushi places on the west side. However, the lack luster service from the servers and chefs, tiny spaces and slow service, make this for a disappointing experience. We have been there maybe 5-6 times because they are convenient and each time we walk away less than impressed. The sushi rolls have been sloppy, the miso too salty, the rice in the nigiri crumbling when picked up, like I said, lackluster service, slow service and over priced for the typical sushi menu. I never like leaving reviews like this, but it is just an average sushi place. I won't comment on the quality or how "fresh" the fish is and no one should unless they ask the chef specifically where it comes from, when they get it and how it's cared for in transport. You can ask some chef's and they will say fresh right out of the sea is not the best. It needs to sit for a little bit. It is rare that it goes from sea to table. So I sometimes chuckle when I see people comment on that. The stars are for the the warm environment it does have, that they offer HH, their location and few of the menu items. I also like when someone is going to complain about a place to provide another option. The actual best sushi in town that I have had is at Whitewater Taphouse. Kusshi nw. At this point if I am going to spend the $$$ that is where it is going to go.

Yelp
The best ever sushi is here! REAL CRAB MEAT used in all their rolls for prices that are comparable to any other sushi joint. Now that is quality and taste that can't be mimicked. Imitation crab meat doesn't stand a chance. It's a smaller establishment that gets darn busy, but the food will come out fast. The menu boasts rolls that have unique twists, such as mango vinaigrette, and every roll is elevated by their real crab meat. At times, it felt as if the tastes of the other fish were masked by the crab, but overall, everything was super fresh. Something about being in the Pacific Northwest eh? Customization is also a plus as the chefs are willing to make you your own special roll with the ingredients you desire. See my pic :)

Yelp
This was an amazing experience! They had many varieties of rolls and drinks. We loved our Kanpi smash drink! Very tasty! We ordered hattori Hanzo, la pastora and smiling Buddha. They were so fantastic! Highly recommend this cute little place. We sat outside and it was very delightful.

Yelp
Extremely welcoming. Daily specials not to be missed. A seat at the bar is my favorite place. The best sushi in town!

Yelp
While visiting family I decided to give Kampai another try after all these years and see if the sushi was still up to par. I figured with a to go order I would be safe from having a negative service interaction. Firstly when I ordered they said they add 18% gratuity for to go orders which seems pretty steep considering we received no other service. I'm all for supporting businesses during this time, but a tip is suppose to go to the service staff for taking care of you. Are we now expected to tip for food being prepared on top of the high sushi prices? At this point I'm just hoping the sushi is worth it.... NOPE! I was floored that nothing had any flavor at all?!? I was so disappointed! I paid a ridiculous amount for subpar flavorless sushi and on top of it was forced to pay an 18% tip. As if that all wasn't enough I was told my order would be ready in 30 minutes and was left waiting because it actually took 45 minutes. Please just be accurate with how long it will take and be considerate of your customers time. Well at the very least I can move on. Now that the sushi matches the attitude (bad and unappealing) I can profoundly state that I will never be back. I am however extremely excited to try other sushi options in Bend next time I visit or I'll just wait until I'm back home where I can have exceptional, fresh and flavorful sushi at half the cost of this place and where everyone there is thankful for all their customers! I'll leave the pretentious sushi to those who don't know any better and stick with high quality and high customer service establishments.

Yelp
Kanpai is among the best sushi in Bend and while not the best sushi I have ever had, its a solid option in town. The fish is obviously very fresh and the sushi is very well prepared. I am a fan of doing chefs choice whenever it is an option eating out and sushi places are awesome for that. I was impressed with the Omakase at Kanpai during a previous experience and thought the 4-5 plate option was perfect for me as a somewhat lighter eater. During my most recent trip we did several pieces of Nigiri and 2 chefs choice sushi rolls and it turned out great. The sushi rolls had amazing flavor and were extremely well made, they were better than I could have picked out for myself.

Yelp
This is the best sushi I have ever had. I'm dying to be able to go sit inside again! I have had sushi all over the place and nothing competes to this place to me! I love it!

Yelp
Tasty tasty tasty and excellent service. The rolls have kind of wild names I can't remember them all but the sushi is delicious and fresh tasting, they have a roll called "steak and eggs " which is steak wrapped around rice with a quail egg on it sounds wacky but super delicious. My family and I ate too fast to take any pictures so here's a picture of the Godzilla at the bar.

Yelp
Kanpai is the best sushi in town. My friends and I did the Omakase from the sushi bar the first time and it was incredible! The second time through we ordered a bunch of sushi and sashimi and it was the same level of excellence as the Omakase experience. So far we're batting 1.000 so if you're questioning whether or not to give this place a whirl, you know my answer.
