"Bay Area mini-chain Kansai has opened its third location, the Bay Area News Group reports, with a lengthy menu that includes rolls like the “Tiger Woods” (spicy tuna and cucumber topped with seaweed salad and a spicy mayo sauce)." - Eve Batey

Lovely little place, great service, everything is fresh and well presented. We’ve been here multiple times and enjoyed the food every time. Would recommend!

Google
A tiny, and I mean tiny!, hole in the wall place that has superb sushi for very reasonable price. Recently discovered this place and been coming back regularly. The food has been very enjoyable every time. Hard to get a table during rush hour, so there’s a lot of takeout orders. Let’s keep on supporting good local places like this so we all can enjoy good food in Hayward.

Google
Quality items and decent prices. Service is quick. Needs to be with only a handful of tables. 1 unisex restroom. Lots of parking that is timed in the area.

Google
The place had decent food at a reasonable price. It also came pretty quick. The staff were helpful wtih to go boxes and giving forks to other tables that needed it. However. it does feel a bit crowded.

We have ordered "to go" in the past and decided to check the restaurant. It was cozy and clean. We ordered Bentos and a couple of rolls (Rainbow, Blossom) The food was delicious! Currently our top Sushi spot in Hayward 🙏🏻🥰

Google
Came in and ordered 2 rolls and both were awesome. Always order deep-fried California rolls because everyone has their own spin to it, but also got Godzilla. The fry on both was great. Light and crisp. Service was great. Couple of separate vendors came in and the owner and server accommodated both. The atmosphere was light...very small space but perfect for one or two people. Digitally, the store has their act together. Online menu, updated profile on Google, and even branding via T-Shirt sales. 👍👍

This Kansai spot is pretty compact, with just enough space to get by. The downside? On a cold night, every time the door opens, cold air blasts right in. The place also has a bit of a cold vibe, with exposed concrete walls and dim lighting adding to that chill, almost industrial feel. It’s not uncomfortable, but it definitely leans on the colder side. On the plus side, it doesn’t have that overpowering fishy smell you get in some seafood places, which is a solid win. The service is decent, and the servers stay on top of things. When I went, there was only one other table occupied, yet it still took a bit longer than expected for the food to hit the table. We ordered the 49er roll, Philadelphia roll, Oakland roll, Lion King roll, and the In & Out roll. Everything came out as expected, with fresh fish that had zero fishy smell. The 49er roll in particular was amazing and definitely the standout of the meal.

I hardly ever leave reviews but I stopped by here today for my second time and I have to say this will be my go to when I'm passing through hayward. I absolutely love their bento boxes I normally don't ever get beef teriyaki but this place did not disappoint. The portion sizes are really big compared to most places I've gone to plus you can't beat the prices super reasonable. The fish was super fresh especially the tuna. Even my toddler loved it. Thank you again for serving us we will be back again.

Yelp
Premium quality sushi in near downtown Hayward. We came here for a very late lunch on a Monday at 2:30p and no one was there except our group. Surprisingly, we got the lunch prices so everything we ordered was at a discounted price. So clutch! I could definitely see myself choosing this place for date night and then walk down the street to Century theaters to catch a flick! The food was amazing! I got the 2 item bento with tuna sashimi and chicken katsu and my other friend also got a bento but 3 item - tempura, saba shioyaki and shiro maguro sashimi. Every item was fresh and tasted delicious but I would say the winner was my friend's spicy chirashi bowl. The bowl to me is delicious and healthy at the same time for it comes with rice, salad and all the fresh fish. Yum! The server was great, he was prompt and the kitchen got out our orders super fast. The server was very accommodating to all the requests we had. Safe to say I'll be coming back to try their crafted sushi rolls next.

Kathlene M.

Yelp
All the rolls were perfect! However, the Lion King was not what I ordered. I had ordered Bay scallop so I was not able to try what I wanted. In addition, it had spicy sauce on it and I can't really eat spicy too well. However! Dream Gina was my favorite! My bf actually did not tell me it had wasabi in it... so I could not tell. I think the cream cheese helped balance it.

Yelp
There was a big group of teens that occupied pretty much the entire restaurant place and the only server was too busy. She was nice but I had to get our own chopsticks as she got really busy with the big group (8-9 teens). We ordered two lion king (baked) and bento. We liked the beef teriyaki. The rest were okay. We had finished our bento when lion king arrived. I didn't care for the lion king. Place is tight but clean. In cases where there is a big group talking loud and nasty, dining experience will not be ideal.

Sabine M.

Yelp
Had their 3 item bento box with California roll, beef teriyaki and tempura mix. The portion was really big, even the roll was a a great size. Everything tasted so good and you definitely can't beat the price. Definitely recommend it!

Jessamyn D.

Yelp
Small restaurant, staff is friendly and welcoming! This restaurant offers a lot of menu items from sushi rolls, to bento boxes, to more. My family and I enjoyed all the food that we were served. Bathroom is hidden underneath curtain, very clean and spacious!

Alexandra C.

Yelp
Have only tried take out from Kansai. Portion is plentiful with a well ratio of teriyaki sauce. Perfectly grilled chicken. Great weekly meal prep.

Yelp
Came here tonight with a friend as Hayward is halfway between us in Walnut Creek and San Mateo. Although tonight was our first time at Kansai's Hayward location, I have previously ordered from Kansai's Concord location via DoorDash. I'm not super familiar with Hayward but when Kansai came up on my Yelp feed, I remembered how much I liked the sushi at the Concord location. We came around 5 pm and were seated immediately. I had the rainbow roll and the salmon maki, both of which were super tasty. My friend got the James and CA rolls, which she liked. Service was friendly and we liked the candy that came with the bill. The space is small but don't let that discourage you from trying Kansai! FYI, the bathroom is hidden underneath the curtain. When I asked, they pointed to the kitchen door and I thought the bathroom required walking through the kitchen. Luckily the one of the chefs redirected me to the bathroom. The area where the curtain was seemed tight so I thought I was in the wrong place. Better signage would be helpful so people don't make the same mistake as I did. Not a dealbreaker and I would absolutely come back!

Yelp
My partner and I did take out for: 2 orders of salmon nigiri and 1 telegraph ave roll. We kinda ate before I remembered to take pics so sorry about the half eaten meal lol. The service was nice. I did my pick up order over the phone and they helped me double check the ingredients since my partner can't eat avocados. I came and they are small so be patient, I had to wait for them to end taking someone's pick up order before paying for mine and leaving. That said the place was nice and I would sit down and eat there in the future and really appreciated the food! It was pretty good. I messed up and ordered the roll w/o realizing it is *cooked* salmon which I wasn't in the mood for BUT it was a good roll and the sauce on it was amazing. The nigiri was a nice chunky cut of salmon and we both agreed it was good. Not the *best* nigiri ever but good for the price and located near us.

Alisa B.

Yelp
If you love saucy sushi rolls, you've come to the right place! This place has a good variety of rolls to choose from - something for everyone. I really enjoyed the Go-Go Roll and the Ichiban roll! If you're looking for rolls without sauce, my friend recommends the 49ers Roll! To share, the table got the Spicy Pan Rice. THIS WAS SOOO GOOD! This was a build-your-own type of plate. Crispy rice as the base was a game changer. Top it with spicy salmon, crab mix, or spicy tuna and salad?? I LOVE THIS! I have never seen it at any other sushi place. A unique new experience for us.

Cat L.

Yelp
Be prepared, if you're planning to dine in - this place is shockingly tiny. Nice menu with a solid selection. Not overwhelming, but enough options to make it difficult to choose!! Our server was helpful. I appreciated that she made suggestions for an alternate roll when I explained that I wanted one but don't like unagi. All in all, good little spot for sushi and the seaweed salad is also delicious. Try the JD, and if you like unagi get the Oakland.

Greg S.

Yelp
We have been to the Oakland restaurant many times and love the food, service and interior. So, when we heard of this location, we just had to come in. The overall building and interior is extremely different from the other store, as this one is super small with tight seating (maybe 8-10 tables?) and it's clear the food pickup and delivery is the biggest draw here. And, here is why.... The food is awesome! In fact, I want to say it is better here than the other location. We came in for Bento dinners, and were very impressed. You get a ton of food, and that food is really tasty. If it were not for the super tight seating (ok, just pretend you are in a crowded Asian hotspot) I would have given 5 stars, but for atmosphere, I have to ding one star.

Yelp
Came here on a whim First time here We found street parking across the street There was a little bit of a wait to get seated but not too bad We were asked to wait outside of the restaurant No worries We got seated in a little kitty corner I thought the area was for employees only looked like a section where employees have their lunch or something lol the table we were seated at was very wobbly and small for all the items we ordered Food is good Ingredients are fresh Prices are reasonable There was only ONE waitress working who was actually the hostess waitress and server all in ONE service was kinda slow Not anything bad towards her but rather towards management and staffing issues or choices We actually felt bad We saw her basically doing it all and even handling incoming calls, to go orders and on line orders So of course she was slow to pick up our empty plates Of course she couldn't fill up our waters timely There were 5 chefs in the kitchen and ONE female working the floor Smh Management has to do better Should do better Unreasonable working environment for employees

Emeric Kaye G.

Yelp
I wish I could remember the rolls but I do remember that they were all delicious and filling! Our server was nice. Place is a bit small and intimate but no problem! Food is delicious! Will def be back again :)

Lester L.

Yelp
This is our take out sushi spot. They're fast with generous portions. We order online and park in the lot. It's easy and convenient. We order the 3 item bentos and sushi rolls. We like their lion king roll the best.

Anna P.

Yelp
They were so rude, but not only were the 2 ladies that were there on 6/3, rude, but was also racist. They told us to wait outside, but they seated a couple who came after us. They had tables available but act like our party of 5 were to many. Do not patronize THIS PLACE. THEY DO NOT EVEN DESERVE 1 STAR

Hien P.

Yelp
Mixed Experience at Kansai in Hayward I recently visited Kansai in Downtown Hayward, located next to Cookies. Parking can be challenging, but there are spaces behind the restaurant. The small ambiance caught my attention, especially since most orders seemed to be for DoorDash or mobile pickup. Compared to the Oakland sister location, the seating here is limited, affecting the overall experience. While the food was okay, it fell short compared to the Oakland branch. Despite being in the Hayward area, I'd consider making the drive to Oakland for a better dining atmosphere. The food met expectations but didn't surpass them. The customer service was commendable, with a solo effort by the staff. For those craving a bento box, Kansai in Hayward is an option, but if you seek the same food with a better taste, the Oakland store is worth the drive. Pricing is reasonable, though bordering on expensive. Overall, I'd rate this experience a seven out of ten.

Yelp
Delicious, fresh food. I got a delivery through DoorDash. It was hot, and the portions were large. I got the chicken teriyaki dinburi It's teriyaki chicken over rice and has vegetables and two orange slices . Really tasty Give this place a try you will be glad you did Bon appétit

Kavita S.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious and the service is the best. The food we well made and I will continue to come here.

Karishma G.

Yelp
I ordered their Spicy Tuna Roll, Spicy Salmon Roll, Dragon Roll and Go Go Roll through DoorDash. They were packed in plastic containers with plastic grass as decor, which I could've done without. The Spicy Tuna Roll did not taste fresh at all. I only ate two pieces. The Spicy Salmon Roll tasted good, but it was moist! The roll was literally falling apart. This wasn't the experience I had hoped for. My favorite was the Dragon Roll because it tasted the best! Honestly, was just a California Roll with unagi, so kinda hard to mess up. The Go-Go Roll was the absolute worst! The raw tuna and salmon were not fresh at all! Again, I only had one piece. This place was a disappointment and I don't recommend.

Troy L.

Yelp
The sushi here is excellent! I recommend the James roll. Super saucy and yummy. The chicken teriyaki is moist and not rough and dry unlike some places. Super cute place for a sushi date night. The service is good as well. Highly recommend.

Tearsa I.

Yelp
THE last sushi restaurant that doesn't skimp on the quality AND quantity! First time trying this place I ordering togo and I was shocked at the amount of sushi they prepared! I ordered a 007 and a Katie2, and I was blown away!! Delicious!! Service was great, tapped and I was in and out! Please don't ever change!

Yelp
I came here on a Sunday before leaving for a business trip, didn't feel like cooking and didn't want to have to deal with food when leaving for over a week. It's close to home and I wanted Japanese food, or at least tempura. I had the appetizer with shrimp tempura, and requested just japanese yam and broccoli as the vegetables. The shrimp tempura was fried in the panko and it was very hard...and had too much batter...couldn't really find the shrimp. I had rice w/teriyaki sauce on it and it was all ok. I realized that I wasn't really hungry and that came to me as I was eating. I will try them again, on another day. Interestingly enough, I noticed almost a week later that they added a $74 tip to my credit card charge, so we will see if they remove it. I called them and a few days later $ was refunded!

Moji O.

Yelp
I was sadly disappointed. The tonkatsu was over cooked and rock hard that you couldn't even it. We ordered from door dash and attempted to eat the food immediately. Delivery driver was prompt and helpful. Called immediately when he couldn't get in. The rice wasn't cooked to perfection whoever made it put too much water in it. The best thing about this meal was the wasabi was the spiciest I have ever had and I love wasabi with a kick!!! I will think twice before ordering again for a nice meal on Friday night.

Susan T.

Yelp
Came here with my boyfriend for some sushi. Loved their spicy crispy tuna roll ! The sashimi itself I would say I had better elsewhere. It seemed a bit too mushy for us. Service was super nice and friendly. The noodles I would say the steak inside the noodles is good. It's kinda small inside so if you want to come make sure you plan ahead for better seating !

Elli A.

Yelp
Beef Teriyaki food is always amazing and super big portions salad also was very fresh and did not have a dirt taste food came out fast and customer service was amazing!!

Andy T.

Yelp
Best bento boxes (salmon is my favorite), grilled dishes and good sushi. Other's to mention, maki rolls and tempura: just right. The only negative is during take outs, they tape napkins and chopsticks together, which rips napkins off while trying to open (not a big deal but room to improve). Excellent app to order online as well.

JM S.

Yelp
We tried this place with my family because I want to try their Zaru Soba. We ordered Chirachi don, Oakland A's roll, Seafood Yosenabe and not in the picture Salmon skin roll. The service is good and very cozy place. My Zaru Soba is good and it's shareable. The Seafood Yosenabe was very tasty, and shareable too.

Sid S.

Yelp
Amazing food. We love it. Keep it up Kansai. We will continue to eat on your restaurant and even on doordash. We love it.

Jason C.

Yelp
My husband and I tried something new from Door Dash which was this Japanese Style restaurant. He had Beef Teriyaki with California Roles with rice and I had the bento box with Beef Teriyaki and also Chicken. Hubby said the beef was great but I felt that the beef on my end was maybe a little bit too greasy for my tastebuds. I've eaten at places such as Sushi Boat in Union City and also Naked Fish in Hayward and their beef hit the spot and tasted perfect. I'm a bit picky so it's ok. Did not really care for the chicken either. IDK Why but it just did not feel good to me. Rice was great though and I got two slices of orange which my husband delightfully accepted to eat :) The food was very well packaged and sealed though. It was pricey for 2 people. 70 bucks after tip and reduced delivery fees. They did include plenty of soy sauce which is much appreciated as some places you order from this food variety won't put the packets in. We *might* order from here again but I have mixed feelings about the food and there are so many other budget friendly trends on online ordering apps that seem more appetizing on any given day.

Cathy B.

Yelp
I was so excited when I discovered they opened this location - I'm a big fan of their Oakland location! Ofcourse their food doesn't disappoint! Some of my fave are Kansai roll, Katie roll. The quality of their fish is good - my boyfriend always get nigiri and they have so many choices - including toro! The space is small but the service is fast and SUPER friendly!! I love coming here for my sushi treat

Ben H.

Yelp
Lunch review: Definitely get the bento box! I chose the chicken options and omg the portions were hella huge. I swear it was enough for 2 meals and with the lunch special it was pretty cheap too. Besides that everything was pretty average--the sashimi was alright and the chicken was a bit dry. I'd come back tho just because it was such a deal haha. Food: 6/10 Service: 6/10 Vibes: 5/10 Value: 8/10

Theresa G.

Yelp
I had never seen this place in downtown Hayward. Its a little hole in the wall place with about 4 tables. So the place is tiny and not for big groups. They were open on Monday for late lunch. We ordered a huge Bento box with chicken Teriyaki and 3 rolls as well as a spicy tuna hand roll. The staff was nice and food came out quick. They have lots of options and rolls. Everything was delicious and fresh and served generous. The prices were also great. We loved everything we ordered. My roll was huge and the spicy tuna had lots of tuna on it. I will be coming back soon.

Lily R.

Yelp
California roll & a hand roll. So yummy. 10/10 definitely recommend. (Not the fries, I added those lol)

Victoria C.

Yelp
Great local sushi spot. We've ordered takeout as well as eaten in person. It's a small spot, so I would avoid going with a large group. Service was great! Portions are reasonable for the price. There's plenty of areas nearby to park, including a lot just behind the building.

Aisha C.

Yelp
Wow!!! The Spicy Crunch Tuna was one of the best things I've ever had, not to mention my usual rolls which are always great.... Hands down some of the best sushi on this side of the Bay

Ng M.

Yelp
Huge and beautiful bento box. I shared it with my friend and we both got super full. The teriyaki sauce was so tasty and my biggest surprise was the gyoza - big and crunchy, unlike other places. Danmuji (radish) was a nice touch. Pick up was quick and staff was nice. Highly recommend!

Isaac C.

Yelp
Kansai Sushi in Hayward is an absolute gem! From the moment I stepped in, I was greeted warmly and treated to an impeccable dining experience. The atmosphere is elegant yet cozy, setting the perfect stage for a memorable meal and a perfect date spot. Now, let's talk about the sushi - it's sensational! The freshness of the ingredients and the presentation are top-notch. Whether you prefer traditional or adventurous rolls, the menu has it all. The Sashimi was very fresh and the rolls were standout dishes. My girlfriend and I really enjoyed the Kansai Roll along with the Sashimi dinner combo. The beverage selection is impressive, featuring a good sake and Japanese beers. We got a little tipsy haha. What impressed me most was their commitment to sustainability. They source fresh, responsible seafood, which elevates the dining experience. In summary, Kansai Sushi in Hayward offers exceptional food, attentive service, and a commitment to quality. Definitely recommend to everyone. Five stars!

Emily P.

Yelp
My first time trying Kansai. The restaurant is really cute! It's tiny (maybe around 5-6 tables). Ordering through the phone and picking up my food was a quick and easy process. The rolls were amazing and average priced (3 rolls costed around $50 including tax)! I loved their unique rolls. I will definitely be coming back in the future!

Happytobe M.

Yelp
Great fresh food, server was nice and answered every question we had. I will definitely be back, place looks very clean and food is very colorful, portions were good too.

A T.

Yelp
Ordered door dash $40 plus for lion king and Kansai rolls and straight garbage. The lion king roll tasted limmje mayonnaise was on it. Never again. First and last time trying it...

Eugene L.

Yelp
Cozy little sushi spot downtown Hayward with about 6-7 small tables and they make delicious sushi! I found my new sushi spot - we got the salmon and tuna nigiri the fish was so fresh. The Wendy roll (deep fried with salmon cream cheese) super flavorful with the spicy Mayo on top. Lion king roll baked which you can't go wrong. Each roll was around $13 which is average. Highly recommend!

Ashley C.

Yelp
I come here whenever I'm in the area, going to or coming from work. The chirashi-don is huge, whether you get it as a lunch special or for dinner. It's my favorite thing to order. Comes with a small salad and miso soup. **The picture is specifically for the lunch special, not the dinner. The order is always ready in about 20 minutes, which is excellent. It's a small space, so I can't imagine many people sit in. Since it's downtown Hayward, parking can be a little difficult. But there is a lot behind that row of restaurants and I usually have good luck finding parking there.

Priscilla L.

Yelp
Oh my god, the sashimi pieces were thick and huge. This place is located right in the heart of Downtown Hayward. It's pretty small inside but was able to get seated right when we walked in. My friend ordered two sets of California roll (he's not a fan of sushi). I ordered the sashimi platter, lion king roll, and a bottle of sake. Both of our orders came with a side salad and miso soup. The sashimi platter came with 18 pieces of raw fish? I could be wrong.....nonetheless, I couldn't finish my order...lol. I was sooooo full at the end. When we got our bill at the end, I couldn't believe how much it was!! All that for $45-ish?! Overall, I would definitely come here again for the service and price.

Philip S.

Yelp
Waited 40 minutes for my pick-up order. No apology, no reason and this happened before. There are other places to go.

Maria L.

Yelp
Kansai on B St. is a relatively small sushi spot which my husband and I decided to have lunch on while passing through Hayward. There was only another couple seated inside so it felt really cozy. We ordered two rolls - Power Spider and Godzilla - and the Nigiri Mix. Since it was the weekend, the Nigiri Mix was from the dinner menu which had 10 pieces instead of 8. The nigiri rolls were neatly plated and each one was of decent size. A little less rice would have made the fish-to-rice ratio optimal. The usual maguro (tuna), sake (salmon), and hamachi (yellowtail) were in the mix along with suzuki (sea bass) and hirame (halibut). They all tasted very fresh. The Power Spider was a special roll with a deep-fried soft-shell crab and imitation crab mix inside and unagi, avocado, and tobiko outside then garnished with green onions. Unagi, wasabi, and spicy mayo sauces completed the roll. The Godzilla was deep-fried with unagi, imitation crab mix, avocado, and cream cheese inside then topped with tobiko, green onions, and unagi and wasabi sauces. Both rolls were delicious and had a good crunch from within. The size was OK but they poured more sauce than needed to the point that the rolls ran the risk of getting soaked. We enjoyed the ambiance and the food and the service was super friendly. Parking was abundant and we got one right in front of the restaurant. There's a big chance we will be back if we pass by Hayward again.

Brenda L.

Yelp
Was passing along Hayward coming from San Francisco, and decided to visit Kansai since they were one of the few sushi restaurants open late on our drive home. It's located in Downtown Hayward, with a parking lot in the back. Kansai has indoor dining available, although it's very limited (if I remember correctly, I think it was only 4-5 tables to set 4 people each)? We ended up ordering takeout because of this. They have a huge selection of sushi rolls to choose, and prices are in line with the other sushi restaurants in the area. Service was friendly and nice, especially the woman who took our order! She seemed to be the only server working at the time, and was moving quickly to take care of customers which I admired. We had a huuuge order since we were also ordering for family, and I ended up having their Lion King roll! Unfortunately we weren't able to enjoy our food until the day after since shortly after picking up our food we got into a not-so-lucky incident. But fortunately, everything was packaged with care and our food heated up well! The lion king was generously topped with roe and salmon, and the California roll below the salmon remained fresh and moist. We added some unagi sauce since it felt like it was missing something, and it made for a great addition!

Liz W.

Yelp
Had the vegetable tempura, the salmon roll and the shrimp roll. Food flavor was acceptable. Only disappointment was with the house saki. Service was responsive. Went on a weeknight and looked like there were regulars who came for dinner. Bento boxes looked like a good deal. Will give them another try when I'm in the area. Holding off on the Saki though.

Michael V.

Yelp
Always a great experience at Kansai! Dining in is so much fun! Although the storefront is a bit small, it adds to the ambiance and energy of the meal. The wait staff as well as the chefs provide such great service through attending to your needs and delivering such fantastic meals.

Nicholas C.

Yelp
Had 2 very underwhelming rolls. What really is making me leave this review is how badly they skimped the avocado. Can't advertise a roll with an ingredient & hardly put any on it. Anyways pretty average if not less.
