On the Grid : Karameller Candy Shop

"Karameller is Swedish for "hard candy", and this recently opened Mainland Street shop is taking its stated purpose seriously. Over 100 hard and gummy candy varieties from Scandinavia brighten up this tiny storefront and make you feel like a kid again. Owner Louise Schönberg opened the shop because she missed candy from her native country after a decade of living in Vancouver. One can easily see why it was missed - the candy is delicious and really fun. Our favourite is the decadent Rambo Cola. The minimal interior design by Leckie Studio acts as the perfect backdrop for the colourful exuberance within. At $3.49 per 100g, grab a bag and scoop away." - Becki Chan & Milos Begovic

Super sweet spot in a great location. Love their variety, and the quality is just so good. Really happy with my sweet and sour mix that I bought. You can’t buy candy like this anywhere nearby, so it’s a must-try!

I was visiting Vancouver BC from the US and saw this store on maps. This store is such a nice visit, very clean and organized with helpful and friendly staff. I also just have to say the store is so cute. I really wanted to try some popular European candies, specifically Bubs. They had tons in stock. I’m unsure of how pricing with these candies are in Canada, but in the US Bubs are very expensive, about $18-20 USD for a small bag. Karamellers prices were MUCH lower, and the candies were super fresh which isn’t always the case at other stores. I ended up getting tons, and the staff also let me know they do shipping to the US. I definitely recommend visiting to anyone who wants to try quality and tasty new candies!

I love this place and hope it never goes away. If anything I hope they expand. Candies are fresh and tasty and they make great gifts! The mega mix bag is a great way to try out variety and find your fav. Online ordered couple of my fav 100g bags and it was ready for pickup within 2days. Shop is v clean and bright. Would 10/10 recommend.

Google
I used to love ordering candy from here, but it’s gone down hill in the past year, I like to order the big cube and now it’s being stuffed with regular candy you can get anywhere, wine gums/sour watermelons, it used to be all premium imported candy that was hard to get in canada. Feels scammy now.

Have to call out the incredible service I received this morning. We tried one of their candies at a family gathering, and upon doing so, decided to place a last minute order before we left to fly back out East. I called to see when we could pick up and my call was returned within 10 minutes. On top of that, my order was fulfilled within 10 minutes, too. So impressed with the level of service and dedication to an outstanding customer experience. Thank you so much!

I was curious about the Swedish candy trend and ended up stumbling upon Karameller Candy! I didn't have the patience to wait for shipments from Toronto or the US😆, and I was thrilled to find this candy shop near my home. While many items were already sold out, there were still plenty of options to satisfy my curiosity. The 'Mini Banana Caramel Bub' I sampled was absolutely delicious, and I couldn't resist trying 'Berry Bites' on my way home; they were so fruity, juicy, and amazing! 'Sour Apple Rings' also captivated my taste buds. The 'Crick Marshmallow' was so substantial that just one was satisfying, with its chewy marshmallow inside, which I really enjoyed. I joked about feeling so lucky while making purchases, but it's truly enjoyable and exciting to be able to try out such a variety of candies. My husband, who loves candy, is actually of Swedish descent. We've been joking lately that he's true Swedish since this Swedish candy trend started. It was a purchase for him, but it was truly an enjoyable visit. Thanks to the staff member (I don't know her name, sorry😭) for her warm and helpful guidance. I'll definitely be back when the stock is replenished next time.

Yelp
I'm on a gummy phase. I've always had gummies, just never really read the package until a recent YouTube video on Swedish folks eating the most candy on earth. Considering Sweden doesn't actually refine their own sugar, that's pretty interesting. What got me to Karameller Candy shop was the no hight fructose gummies. Grabbed a snack pack, these gummies are very hefty in weight and is sold by weight. $6 per 100 grams. Upon arrival, I was a disappointed there wasn't a candy wall to pick and choose. Just a bookcase like shelf displaying candies packaged ready to go. There were a few assorted packaged on a table which a staff assisted me with a few questions. So no thrill of shovelling candy or dispensing myself. I wish there were more signs on texture of gummies and sourness on a scale. More info online, online maybe the way to go as there is more info there. Later that week, I went to ikea to see what their gummies are about. Karameller is strictly made in Sweden or so I was told as there are no labels or info orgin online. Upon rechecking, all the photos and that wall of candy is maybe the old location. Ikea are mostly made in Finland and Spain. No high fructose corn syrup. Post taste testing and in comparison to the German candies which again in EU nations, generally don't have high fructose corn syrup. Karameller candies are very bespoke in flavours. There is a difference. If you are in for a Swedish experience. Fun!

Yelp
I came across this candy shop randomly while looking at what's around Kitsilano and wow!! I'm so glad I went to try it out!! I bought one gift bag for a friend, and one smaller bag for myself. Every gummy I had in my bag was phenomenal. Maybe the best gummy candies I've ever had. Perhaps it's the "no high fructose corn syrup"? Unsure, but the flavours were GIVING and the textures were perfect for my soft mouth. Not too gummy and not too hard. I'm glad this shop is nowhere near me because I would go broke and develop diabetes. Service was really energetic and welcoming. You can get a mixed bag of candies of your choice. They need to serve you though, so it can take a while. Self-serve would be much more efficient. The shop storefront is very small, felt a little claustrophobic as more and more people kept coming in and waiting in line.

Yelp
OMFG why hadn't I had their candies before? I am obsessed with sour candies or any of those sours with sugar coating on the outside. My partner's company gave us some swag with a jar of their candies and we were just blown away. They don't use corn syrup and the stuff is so flavorful and not as sweet as other sour candies I've had. I just can't help myself to a 2nd, 3rd, 4th...it's addictive. In a way, I wish I never tried them because now I want more :P I have no idea what their prices are like but based on the quality, I am guessing they're going to cost more than the kind you get at a convenience store. Is it worth it (not knowing the price because I didn't pay for this jar)? Yeah they are!

Yelp
Nice modern and stylish candy shop. It's definitely not your typical novelty candy store. They carry a great selection of Swedish candies. If I could pick a favorite, it would be the gummy marshmallow hearts. The girl working there was really friendly and helpful!

Yelp
I really like this candy shop, not the song so much. I try to come here every time I'm in town to get a few bags of goodies to snack on for the duration of my trip. Love this little Swedish candy store with great selections to choose from. From speaking with the staff, the candy is imported from Scandinavia and has no HFCS, no trans fat and GMO stuff. As long as it taste good, I'm cool with it. I usually get a bag of sweet and sour candies, and then a bag of just mixed up chocolates. They do sell little gift jars where you can fill it up as much as you can, as long as the lid closes, for a flat rate. Staff has always been friendly & helpful. Shop is clean, tidy and orderly. They do not reuse scoops or tongs after each customer, as they will wash it before it goes back into rotation. This shop may be a little tough to see as it is a very small shop in the middle of Yaletown. Definitely a place to stop in and grab some sweets!

Yelp
I have a huge sweet tooth, and was excited when this store opened in Yaletown. I had big expectations for this higher-end candy store. I was, however, a bit disappointed. Yes, they sell products with better ingredients (if we can even use that description for sugar) than many cheaper candies, but I find their selection limited and overly expensive. It could just be my taste - I prefer hard candies to gummies, and much of what they sell are gummies. If I were going for high-end candy, I would choose Sugarfina over Karameller.

Yelp
Very solid 3.75 stars, their decor and prices fit the hood ;) Oddly when I'm not in the chocolate mood, I like their half and half... Just wished they carried more coke bottles.

Yelp
- never been a fan of licorice until I had the sweet and salty licorice from here! - 3.99$/100g - Also roll sized rainbow strips

Yelp
Cute little candy shop on Mainland Street in Yaletown. The candy does not have high fructose corn syrup which makes it slightly better for you. They have a wide variety of flavors and candies/chocolates. It was a bit pricey ($3.99/100grams) but was worth it for the quality of candy. Can't wait to return!

Yelp
Perfect timing for a new Swedish candy shop to open in Yaletown over the summer when I had recently visited Stockholm and was in candy heaven with all of their candy shops. This little shop is a treat (pun intended) to indulge in special candies that you can't find at supermarkets or other local candy shops. The shop owners are friendly and will answer any questions. There is a large selection of candies with names and ingredients listed. Tongs are available to use and then customers put them in a bin to be cleaned. The hardest part is not going overboard choosing candies to try. Favourites include the fudge, Swedish fish, Rambo sour cola, skulls and sour raspberry-flavored gummies. At $3.49/100g, definitely pick 1-2 to sample of various candies. I've made several return trips already and will be a regular customer.

Yelp
I love this candy store! The candy is always good and always my first stop upon my arrival to Vancouver! I always make sure to load up when I leave as well!!! This is a great gift idea for kids birthday parties and even corporate events. Their candy is also really good quality compared to other shops that sell generic. My favourite are the sours. Go Get some!
google avatar

Savannah C.

Yelp
I can't compare the variety that they have here to the variety that they have at an ICA Maxi, but I can say it's vast. Every bin is filled with sweet, sour, and chocolate goodies. You can use tongs or a scoop. Once you're through, dispose of the tongs or scoop in a bin before you approach the register for checkout. Så mycket godis o smakar gott!

Yelp
Really great! Love the fact that their candy is made from "real" whole sugar ingredients. Only downfall is not being able to taste what you put in your bag before buying it in bulk. Had a few treats that were not to my liking but overall was super pleased!

Yelp
I was actually recommended this candy shop from another Yelper at an Elite event who recommended this place to check out since it was more transit friendly in the downtown area and has a different feel than the regular Candy Isle place that I go to. Their branding is differently different, their trying to aim to be more classy for the area without being campy like a Katy Perry music video. Sugar is sugar to me, it's just the way it is presented to me wrapped in a jar and presented in a bow....this place did not disappoint. Price margin was respectable to a degree but once again, you're really paying for the branding more than anything. The customer service was amazing. I walked in there like a kid in a candy store...actually an adult with a kid mentality in a candy store. What a great day to shake off a bad day by walking into a sugar heaven. If Veruca Salt had a sugar room, it would look something like this.

Yelp
This candy store has a huge variety of sour and sweet lollies. It is extremely clean and hygienic as they wash all the utensils after each use, there are never to many lollies stuck in a clump and the store always looks inviting. When you walk in the lady at the desk is always so friendly, helpful and makes the purchase all the more worth it. The sour strawberry rollers are my favourite, especially when pulled apart into strips . Have been multiple times and will be back soon for sure

Yelp
Rolled in to this AMAZING candy shop. OH EM GEE.. It is the nicest candy shop I have ever stepped foot in. It is located in the perfect location right in yaletown. The owner is a sweetheart! They have the best sour candy and delicious chocolates! I loove how chique and classy this candy store looks, its so different from any other candy shop!

Yelp
I have a problem. I am addicted to Karameller's Swedish candies. A recent and perfectly fitting addition to Yaletown, Karameller's white paper bags filled with candy are going to become a staple addition to the contents of my purse. If I am ever upset with you or it is my birthday, present me with all the sour candies in the store and the strawberry flavored licorice. I'm running low on my stash so Karameller, you will see me this week.

Yelp
I was impressed by the staffs ability to pick candies based on my age and gender. Boy did she nail it! The candy was super fresh, and different from Canadian candy.

Yelp
I had high hopes for this place but was quite disappointed. Having been to Sweden and enjoying the candy while I was there, I was excited to try this place. The young condescending girl working there should learn some manners. I thought candy shops were happier places? Some of the candy they sell you can buy from Ikea at a fraction of the price these guys are asking for.

Yelp
YAYYY I love it! I love candy! This is heaven! Everything is by weight and all candy is the same price... Just fill your bag with what ever you like and pay! I got lots and it was only $16... I need to go back! I LOVE SO MUCH!

Sandra A.

Yelp
Best candy in town ! Perfect indulgence for the the sweet tooth. They also have cute jars and boxes which makes it the perfect gift.

Yelp
Simple decor, pleasing staff, and a wide selection of top quality candy. I live on the North Shore, but I have no problem going all the way to Yaletown to get my candy craving fixed.

Yelp
After having drinks at the keg yaletown, we stumble by this candy store. It looked unique and clean which is why we decided to go in! Super clean store with a big selection of candy. I'm really sure how much the candy is but I had a little bag full and it was about $7-8? The store clerk was friendly. The store is very simple but I really like the set up of the store. All of their candy is GMO free and Is made without any high fruitose syrup!

Jane S.

Yelp
I've never been into this store but a friend of mine bought me a mixed bag of sweets.... Love the selection. Worth a visit if you are in the area. I can't wait to stop by soon.

Sasha E.

Yelp
I love this candy shop! Super clean and simple with interesting and different candy options. Also, friendly staff! I will be back here more often than I should be :)

Yelp
I'm not much of a candy person, but I loved every single candy I got from this store. Amazing selection, great decor, wonderful customer service. The owner is the sweetest lady and didn't mind answering my questions about where each candy came from (all from Sweden!). Will definitely be recommending and going back.
