I am so glad my friends invited me to karaoke this winter. Absolutely, fantastically fun!
When I studied abroad in Hong Kong, China, I became pretty familiar with karaoke places and the setup of renting a room, getting enough "liquid courage" to sink a battleship and singing all night long. So it was a little like old homecoming walking into Karaoke Melody 2 and a similar setup.
True, we didn't stay all night - I'm not sure how people manage the stamina for that, but I still had an absolute blast. About 8 people were invited to come, but only 5 of us showed up at game time, and that was actually a really good number. For 3 hours we picked out embarrassing songs (this included Disney songs, showtunes, K-pop for my one Asian friend, and lots and lots of Top 40's from now and back in the day.
Before getting our room those of us in need of refreshments started a tab at the bar (very friendly staff), then headed to our room. They put us in a comfy, plush-boothed room with an iPad, two huge books of songs (English and every Asian language I've never been able to speak but wish I could) and let us loose.
So at first, everyone was kind of awkward and shy, and we couldn't think of a thing to sing, but finally the ice got broken, people started to relax and after a half hour we were all belting out songs. On key, off key - didn't matter. My friends and I were standing up to sing, bopping along and doing the dance moves for some songs, harmonizing (or attempting to) - and generally having a goofy, fun time.
The rooms are very well sound proofed - so well done that I didn't even know there was a huge party of at least 10 guys next store singing head banging rock and roll and J-pop songs at the top of their lungs till I went out to get a water from the bar.
The hours flew by in a flash and when we initially thought we'd only be there for two hours, we looked at the clock and it was already 12:30 AM. Oops. Ah well, that's what Saturdays are for, right? So we finally decided to split then, paid our bills (which they conveniently divided for us), and headed home to recover from the self-induced laryngitis.
I'd say you get great bang for your buck at Karaoke Melodies and there's no better way to make a fool of yourself singing and not be ridiculed mercilessly than with your posse.
