"Flavors from six Deccan coastal regions bump into each other at this casual, earth-toned Bandra West restaurant, and the resulting mashups demand repeat visits. This city loves to combine ingredients from the region and beyond, and at Kari Apla, those pairings feel balanced, and work like they were meant to be together. We keep going back for the lush omelet moilee, the slow-cooked, warmly spiced Madurai mutton cutlets, Angamaly pork pepper roast, and bone-in kingfish wrapped in a banana leaf. Another thing we love about Kari Apla that’s rare for Mumbai: the chefs-owners play multiple roles, smoothly gliding in and out of the open kitchen to bus tables, and chat with diners about their day or the inspiration behind each dish. The partially open outside seating faces a busy Bandra road, and can be muggy, dusty, and noisy, so we prefer to prop ourselves on a high stool at the kitchen counter in the narrow air-conditioned back room and enjoy the action. Overpriced and underwhelming. We were looking forward to visiting this newish kerala/ Maharashtran restaurant in Khar. Had seen some good reviews online. However, this place did not excite us at all. Firstly the menu was confusing, it had to be explained, however if the food was great this wouldn't have really been an issue. We ordered Avocado Thecha with Batata papad and jackfruit cutlets followed by Banana leaf roasted kingfish , prawn moilee vattayappam , sukka chickan and appam . We were told the appam was a special bread, it was just the same as a normal sweetish appam, the paratha that came with the fish was the smallest we have ever seen and the fish was small but ok. All the flavours were underwhelming. Nothing really stood out, it wasn't terrible, just disappointing. Although the filter coffee was quite good. There are many other decent places in Mumbai to eat Keralan or Maharashtran food, but we won't bother coming back here.

Getting there can be a bit of a challenge as the road in front of the restaurant is dug up. No valet service available thus park in any of the alleys wherever you can get one. Can be a bit of challenge in peak hours The restaurant is small in size yet the space is optimally utilised. The menu is a single page printed on both side which makes it easier to make a choice. I was alone and I decided to sit at the kitchen counter. Unlike a kitchen it was not hot and was completely air conditioned. Immediately on seating I was served a glass of water , a rarity these days in Mumbai. I appreciated. I spoke to Mathew who runs this place and on his suggestion I ordered “ Banana leaf roasted fish served with scallion chilli paratha”. The fish they used was Ravas. Given that this dish takes some time prepare I ordered an Americano. I was provided a complimentary dish prepared with paste of peanuts, garnished with curry leaves. It was quite tasty. I have a suggestion though. I would like to try this either with burnt garlic or with deep fried crispy onions. Maybe the next time around 😊 The fish was marinated with a green paste which comprises of Coriander mostly. It was soft and succulent and went well with the small paratha. I also had a portion of Kerala friend chicken. A perfect dish to go with a drink. Although the outlet does not serve alcohol. Nevertheless I enjoyed it without it too. I wish there are days where specific Thalis are served dedicated to one of the 5 Southern states. If it happens I will come running. Overall I loved the homely vibe and the hospitality of the owner and staff and I wish they do well and open up other outlets in Mumbai soon

The food is heavenly. We polished off the prawns and haleem before any pics could be taken. The Kerala chicken curry and ghee rice was par excellence 👌 The perfect cooking of the chicken thigh - Muaah.. I haven’t had better anywhere else. The food was wholesome and soul food. We are in a food coma. And that taal gur cake 🥲 I could cry. There’s magic in this kitchen ✨ magic ✨ And oh wait. That something stuffed chilli parotta that we asked for to scoop the haleem with. I mean whattt was that!! Mind was blown. Crispy soft flavourful and yummy - I’m describing a baby parotta. Like I said - there’s magic in this kitchen ✨

Incredible food, Incredible People and Incredible reasons to come back for more. This is situated right on the Khar Pali Rd and I could smell the chorizo pulao as I was making my way into Kari Apla. You get transported to the western coastal region of India with a variety of choices from the outstanding angamaly pork to the absolutely authentic karwari prawn curry. I generally refuse to eat vegetarian food, but was nudged by my friends to taste the Kerela Mushroom Curry and I was blown away. For Desserts, we tried the Tender Coconut Pudding and the Banana bread with Ice cream - an absolutely delightful end to our meal. One of my top recommendations in Mumbai from now onwards!

Kari Apla is a small place located next to Jai Jawan on Pali Road. During our visit we tried the avocado thecha, jackfruit cutlets (must try), mushroom pepper fry and kerala chicken in starters. They bake their own bread and it's really good ! For mains we had prawns curry, Veg moilee and chicken curry. All the dishes were really tasty. The star of the show was dessert - Mango Gadbad ice cream which had shrikhand and cream cheese base along with fresh mangos and white chocolate crumble. Highly recommend this place to all food lovers

Visited the place to try out a diffrent cuisine at my location and it was a surprise !!!! The restaurant is designed beautifully giving you that cosy feel along with a class in itself. The place is very welcoming and so is their people , very humble and sweet. They have a perfect kitchen with beautiful walls showing the essence of Mumbai. The journey of the chefs/co-founder is magnificently portrait on a corner wall which was very captivating to look at. They have incorporated the southern costal flavours in the comfort food. Each of their dish is a mind-blogging delicacy in it self; having a subtle flavour, with use of superior ingredients and using Exemplary cooking techniques. Must have dishes : kandala curry hummus , pork pepper fry, banana leaf wrapped surmai and banana cake with filter coffee, not to forget their prawns dish is to die for. My best wishes and regards to the Chefs/Owners of the place Mathew and Ebaani, who are always there to make your meal at “Kari-Apla” a memorable experience.
