Asitane Restaurant - Gastro Obscura

"With a quiet location on a side street in Istanbul, Asitane Restaurant has been re-creating classical Ottoman Empire cuisine since 1991. It’s harder than it sounds: Since secretive guilds during the Ottoman era prohibited chefs from writing down recipes, putting that food on the table has required some serious detective work. A team of academics and researchers collaborated with the restaurant’s chefs to craft a repertoire of hundreds of recipes, including many that are tied to specific dates. Specialties include almond soup from 1539 served with pomegranate and nutmeg, 17th-century fried liver rissoles dunked in sweet-and-sour molasses, and slow-cooked goose atop almond pilaf. A perennial favorite is baked fruit (quince in the winter, melon in the summer) stuffed with lamb and beef. Tables in the tree-shaded courtyard are especially appealing when Istanbul turns steamy. Update as of August 2021: Currently closed indefinitely for renovations. Know Before You Go While the restaurant’s a bit out of the way, it’s just around the corner from the wonderful Chora Museum, a preserved Byzantine Greek Orthodox Church with beautiful mosaics and frescoes." - nicole001, linkogecko, jenrosesmith, vittore

I stayed in this hotel several times, one of which was five days. The breakfast is the first thing to be mentioned, always rich and fresh, with well done Turkish tea. Not less from what is to be expected from the well known restaurant of the hotel (Though the prices of the other dishes in the restaurant is expensive compared to the small portions, but deserves to be tried for its carefully compiled Ottoman receipts). The hotel is old, actually a renovated old house, but clean and tidy. The bathrooms could take some maintenance maybe, but still OK. The location is not at the heart of the touristic old city (which is in fact better), but in the heart of history, next door to Kariye Museum, you walk a street or two down and you will find Fethiye Museum, and you will be in the ancient neighborhoods of Istanbul; Balat, Fener and the beautiful Halic. The buses and minibuses are reachable by a few minutes walk. Parking in front of the hotel is also safe, where I left my car all day long during five days. Personnel is good, nothing negative about this hotel. Good choice for a peaceful stay.

This hotel is in a great location, off the beaten track, in an interesting neighbourhood of Istanbul. Getting to the city center might look far, but if you like a stroll through the neighbourhood, you can travel in by boat which is a lovely start to the day. The hotel has a great restaurant, loved by local food-lovers. We were given a room in a different building than the main place. Many reviews complain about this extra building as smelly. We found it was okay. Not luxurieus, but okay. For the last night they made us move to a different room in the main building with actually was much smaller than what we have had before. The fact that we had to move was a real nuisance and not well communicated. Good value for money in our case.

I stayed in two hotels on my recent trip to Istanbul. One was a Western style hotel in the old city and one was the Kariye Oteli near the Chora church. I thought Karyie was great, especially for the money. Staff was friendly and went out of its way to be helpful. One of the receptionists even gave us a bus pass so that we could hop on the public transportation to take us downtown. The place was clean and breakfast tasty and plentiful. The only thing I would say wasn't great was its location, at least for someone who was in the city for just a few days and interested in seeing the major sites. The bus ride downtown took a long time when traffic was heavy, and taxis, while always available outside the hotel, were an expensive solution. I would recommend this hotel to someone who has plenty of time but little money, and I would not hesitate to stay there again on a return trip to Istanbul.

I spent 8 nights at Kariye Hotel this April 2019. When choosing the place to stay in Istanbul, prior to my departure from my home country, I was quite undecided until I came across Kariye Hotel. I have gone through the existing reviews on this hotel and I am glad that I did not give consideration to all of negative reviews but instead, chose to experience the place and draw my own conclusion.||||I think eight nights are enough to draw a proper conclusion about a hotel. ||||1. Location||It is true that Edirnekapi is not surrounded by the most popular landmarks of Istanbul but we cannot blind ourselves to the fact that this part of Istanbul contains the Chora Museum, which is the neighbour of Kariye Hotel. If you stroll down the narrow streets near Kariye Hotel, you can reach Balat in less than fifteen minutes. Balat is a colourful neighbourhood, teeming with life and invaded with charming coffee shops and art galleries. The main road of Edirnekapi has countless restaurants, shops and supermarkets. I think this hotel will be appropriate for people who wish to withdraw from the hustle and bustle of their busy lives, and dive into a more peaceful place for some time. Last but not the least, the nearest metro station from Kariye Hotel is less than fifteen minutes by walk. From the Edirnekapi metro station, one can connect easily to other parts of Istanbul.||||2. Room||I stayed in Room 21. It was neither too big nor too small. It was just right. It had a heater, a television, a ceiling fan, a mirror, a big bed, a chair, a table, a cupboard and a bathroom and toilet. I think it has everything that is necessary. I cannot complain at all about the room. The rate per night for such a reasonable is very reasonable in this area. ||||3. Breakfast||I chose a package where breakfast was inclusive. They do not have an open buffet and the same breakfast was served for seven consecutive days. I provided this feedback to the hotel representative. ||||4. Assistance||I was highly helped by the hotel representatives. They are humble, good and friendly. Whenever I required information about directions to particular places and things to do in particular areas of Istanbul, they assisted me unconditionally. ||||The hotel is not a new one. It is quite old and requires continuous renovation but further to my discussion with the hotel representative, they are well aware of this fact and they informed me that the hotel's management is always looking into making the hotel better.||||Last but not the least, I would highly recommend this hotel to people who are looking for both calmness and discovery.

I landed at the Attaturk International Airport and I took the metro here to the Topkapı-Ulubatlı station. I then walked about 1.8km to the hotel. It doesn't go through the best neighborhoods but I felt safe.I got there and was quickly given my room. I asked the hotel receptionist many different things and they always helped me. I never met the owner like others said they did but maybe because I was just one person. This is not a fancy hotel. Its a nice, clean and simple hotel that is near the Faith and Balat neighborhoods of European Istanbul. Its also 30meter walk to the Chora Church museum, which is being renovated right now.

...well, first of all we LOVE the Asitane Restaurant (for real)! But we made the stupid decision staying in the hotel...well well...what shall we say without being rude? okay... the staff is really nice. The suite is spaciousy. The setting of the Hotel besides karye kilesi (chora chruch) is nice. BUT...now we need to stop being kind. The bathroom is absolutely unexpaptable: 30 minutes of brownish water, rusty Installation and a variety of different funghi growing on the wall! You are afraid of picking up the shower - it might brake (and accutally did once upon a time). And the smell. No way. This place is really past it's prime, and, with some urgently necessary renovation, might be a nice place. But not right now. Avoid this place.

Pleasant two day stay at the hotel. Warmly received by the staff. Close proximity to the Sultan Fateh Mosque. A typical Turkish breakfast with nice and quiet place to eat. Overall a nice experience and most importantly cheap.

in the western districts, near the CHora Church, is this gem of a hotel. the restaurant downstairs is best in Istanbul. people are friendly. i've stayed in front room on 1st floor, and suite on 2nd floor. both rooms very large an incredible value. the small shopping area nearby, as well as cafe, are so much more pleasant than crowded areas of Istanbul (which is now everywhere). walk or taxi down to Golden Horm, take teleferrico to Pierre Loti, ferry to Sultanhmet. Thank yo Mr. Batur and your staff.
