I recently ordered a birthday cake from Karma because several party guests have food issues. One needed gluten free. Another needed dairy free, and a third was just simply a vegan. I wanted everyone to have some birthday cake, and this place would allow that to happen.
I'm just going to say it... this kind of baking is just NOT my cup 'o tea. AT ALL. I appreciate that it is there for those who "need" to be careful of the kind of food they ingest, and for THEM, this bakery is a Godsend. However, for me, while I taste-tested several of their items, I just can't get behind any of it.
Don't get me wrong, they baked a BEAUTIFUL chocolate and vanilla marble cake for my husband, and flavor wise, I was actually impressed with the chocolate and caramel flavors, but the TEXTURE and consistency were just very difficult for me to get past. The cake was very thick, heavy, and almost wet, more like unhardened cement. I'm not trying to be dramatic. It really was very heavy and way too moist. The vanilla icing was also horribly grainy. I took one bite, and I was done. Those who needed this kind of cake were grateful, and they loved it. For that reason, I'm very happy, and I sent the leftovers home with them.
To be honest, though, my biggest gripe was that I couldn't order the kind of cake my husband really wanted. Karma considers their cookies and cream cake a "seasonal" item, and they wouldn't bake me one because it's not summer yet, and they didn't have the ingredients for it. Whaaaaatttt? (This was for Memorial Day weekend... isn't that considered the kickoff of summertime? And what weird ingredients couldn't they get year round for a cookies and cream cake?) But get this.... their strawberry cream cake is available year-round. Could somebody please explain how strawberries are NOT a summer fruit? And how come they baked cookies and cream CUPCAKES, which were available for purchase, but no cookies and cream cakes? I'm so confused.
Bottom line is that they are a specialty bakery for people with unique dietary restrictions, and I think they do a great job if people are willing to adjust their taste and texture buds.
