2023 Vancouver MICHELIN Bib Gourmands

"Wood planks, plush banquettes and rustic lighting set a sophisticated tone at Karma Indian Bistro, but its elegant setting isn't the only reason to make a reservation. The food is as pleasing as the surroundings, and the chef's serious vision is outlined on a menu of wonderfully delicious traditional dishes interspersed with bold, innovative plates. Expect richly spiced favorites such as chicken Madras, a fragrant specialty of South India. Coconut rice is the perfect sidekick to sop up all of that delicious, creamy sauce. Savor each bite of the mouthwatering jumbo prawns in a pureed spinach curry, but do leave room for dessert—perhaps the saffron rice pudding or a cooling mango ice cream." - MICHELIN Guide

We had such a great dinner last night. It is a Michelin star spot and honestly, it shows. From the moment we walked in, the staff made us feel welcome. They were really attentive without being overbearing, always checking in to make sure we had everything we needed. The food was amazing. Paneer Chilly was my favorite. The paneer was super soft inside with this perfect crunch on the outside. Every bite had so much flavor. The Garlic Naan was just as good, soft and packed with flavor. It pulled apart so easily and was perfect for scooping up the sauces. Overall, the whole experience was just really good. Definitely a place I would go back to and recommend to friends.

Google
All around a positive dinner experience at Karma Indian Bistro. The Butter Chicken was cooked nicely along with the other mains we had. I loved their Mint Chutney although the Garlic Naan disappointed. Their main portion size is more appropriate for a single individual versus sharing and the prices are slightly higher than some of the other quality Indian restaurants Vancouver is lucky enough to have.

The menu offers a wide variety of dishes, giving plenty of choices for different tastes. Portion sizes are generous, making the meals satisfying. While the ambiance is pleasant, it doesn’t particularly stand out. The service is excellent. The staff is attentive, well-informed, and flexible with spice preferences, which is always appreciated. A special shoutout to the gulab jamuns! They are absolutely divine! My husband tried the Empress Apricot Sour and really enjoyed it. I went with the Garibaldi No. 2. It is definitely a drink for those who like to take their time. The frozen mango takes a while to melt, and until it does, the drink has a pretty bitter edge. All in all, it was a wonderful dining experience. I would definitely recommend giving this place a try!

Google
I visited the place for the first time with my family. The food was great. Service was good as well. The staff was very customer oriented. The ambience was a little bit below expectations. The overwhelming smell of food was not so pleasant for my wife. It’s because they have an open kitchen. May be putting a strong exhaust might help. But overall things which matter more were good.

Google
It is a warm welcoming place to have good indian food. Staff are amazing, One of the best place I would say. We ordered chicken chili, prawn Goan curry with rice, and chicken tikka masala with garlic basil naan. Everything tasted authentic and good, though the chicken tikka masala could have been slightly better and spicy as originally it is.

I had an exceptional service provided by one of their employees named Avneet Jassal. Thank you Avneet for making the experience special if you are reading this. Due to my allergies I could never eat Indian Kheer and after all these years I was finally able to eat their one only vegan saffron rice pudding. I felt like I’m in heaven while I was eating that. I wish I stayed in Vancouver to eat this pudding on a frequent basis. I have ordered some other food too from the restaurant and that’s good too. Love ❤️

Everything is just right about the Karma Indian Bistro. A wide selection of wonderful dishes, great service, and a cozy atmosphere. And affordable too. Highly recommended!

Google
This was my first time trying Indian food in Vancouver, and it was such a great experience! My friend and I had dinner here and, based on a friendly staff member’s recommendation, we ordered the Lamb biryani (mild version, since I’m not a big fan of spicy food). It was absolutely delicious, full of flavor, and the portion was generous; definitely enough for two people to share. Big thanks to the girl who suggested it to us; you made our night! We’ll definitely be back to try more dishes!

Yelp
Great, flavourful, well balanced food for price point. IMO best upscale Indian I've had in Vancouver (yes, better than Vij's). Every dish is flavourful and balanced, without being greasy enough to send you into an immediate food coma. The samosa chaat is a particularly standout appy that I would get every time. Service is friendly and attentive, ambiance and decor are more upscale than casual but the price point is casual, which is a nice treat. Definitely will be back to my new favourite Indian spot in Vancouver!

Yelp
Incredible Indian food with a comprehensive menu and good prices. It has a nice ambiance and the staff are attentive and kind. We ordered: - chicken & lamb tandoori: perfectly cooked, nicely spiced - butter chicken: creamy and buttery - coconut rice: you could taste the coconut faintly but perfectly - garlic naan: good - goa fish curry: creamy, almost sweet, very delicious - pakora mix: the fish pakoras were incredible This is my favourite Indian restaurant in Vancouver now! I give it a 10/10.

Yelp
There is a variety of seating arrangements; From booths, to fireside dining, bar counters to a banquet table, in a cozy and nicely separated dining atmosphere.

Yelp
Been wanting to check this place out esp since it's been on the Bib gourmand recommended list for Vancouver. What a honor. The interior is done very well nicely wood planks, fully stocked bar. I met my friend who lives nearby and this is a weekly take out for him. We shared the patlia chicken and palak paneer. The basmati rice and naan have to be ordered as separate. He asked for it to be mild so perhaps I thought it was good but not great. I would prefer it to be with more spice. I plan to check it out for happy hour which is from 3 - 5pm

Yelp
Really excellent Indian food with a separate vegan section of the menu, good prices, and excellent service. We did a takeout order one night over the phone, requesting everything be ready in 30 minutes, and it certainly was. We got: -Vegetable jalfrezi. Lots of different veggies here, with a tangy, tomato-y, slightly sweet but well-balanced sauce. Really top-notch. 5/5 -Aloo gobi. The potatoes were cooked beautifully -- buttery, but still with some chewy texture. The cauliflower was also cooked well, and the masala sauce was perfectly done. 555 -Yellow dal tadka. Loads of cumin, some tomato, and a wonderfully soupy/creamy texture. Top-notch dal. 5/5 Each dish was $16 plus tax. We also got some tandoori roti ($3 each) on the side. One of the best spots we've discovered in Vancouver for India, up there with Cilantro, Delhi 6, and Ashiana, and just behind the great Sula. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Malai kofta 2/5 Garlic naan 1/5 - not crispy and very doughy Jalfrazi 0/5 - oily but no spice and came out cold They didn't turn the heat on even though it was freezing the female server was very strange - she came to ask how the food is and I told her the jalfrazi was cold, oily and Not good she just said okay and left - she didn't offer to fix the bad food or get something else instead - why are you asking if everything is okay? Update - my stomach hurt after eating the bad food at this place - my recommendation is to avoid this place at all costs

Yelp
There is no wondering why Karma made it on the Michelin Guide. Great presentation, fantastic service, and the most consistently delicious food. Their chicken biryani is all time my favourite and Ive recently tried their tandoori wings which were seasoned soooooo well and perfectly portioned for 2. The drinks are ALSO soooooo good. Always love coming here because I'm always greeted with warmth As well. The ambience is great for a date night or a friends dinner.

Yelp
Came to check out Karma as part of a Kits mini food tasting tour. Of the four restaurants this one was unfortunately a bit of a let down. The space is gorgeous first of all. They were clearly overwhelmed and unfortunately the service and food reflected that. It was very slow - for everyone. They had four staff - two FOH and two BOH. With those four people they were trying (and failing) to manage "regular" diners, event guests and delivery and pickup. We saw food service delivery drivers waiting almost an hour for orders. It's really hard to rate the food as it clearly wasn't their best. Pakora - nice flavour, crispy but cold. Channa masala - cold Naan - average, crispy and warm Butter chicken - had better, was also not hot and there was none or cartilage. We have so many great Indian restaurants and I hope this is not reflective of the usual experience. They were very apologetic and felt bad for the staff but t was disappointing.

Yelp
Love their tandoori chicken!! It is so tender and moist. The flavour of the dishes is well balanced. Service is friendly and attentive. We will be back.

Yelp
Visited on someone else's dime, had a good time, the staff are beyond excellent, friendly and helpful. We had a vegetarian with us and so they were more than accommodating to his choices. We had Fish Pakora, Vegetable Pakora, butter chicken, coconut rice, chicken tikka and a vegetarian dish i can't remember. Plus lots of Naan! All in all is was good enough, but me being extra picky found that all the chicken was a little tough, but the spices were very good. My Butter Chicken was acceptable but sub pare compared to my favorite places due to the sauce just not having a very good mouth feel, it was like a really cheap store bought sauce, but the spice was ok. Now forgive me if this sounds a bit harsh, but when it comes to Butter Chicken - I have eaten it all over Canada and can tell you with some opinion I've tasted better but don't get me wrong, it's far from the worst. I place it near the bottom middle. My wife's Chicken Tikka, although spiced just right, was also pretty tough. The Naan has to be one of the top ten for me. Worth a visit!

Yelp
Food was very good but service definitely was not. Restaurant was not busy too bad service would not be achieved

Yelp
I had an office in India for a few years, BUT have never had such interesting and delicious Indian food before as at Karma. Have not tasted everything on the menu yet, even though we have gone once a week since they opened.

Yelp
I'm surprised by the positive reviews. We ordered delivery, and it was perhaps the worst Indian food we've ever had. The sauces were missing spices, the butter chicken tasted fake like it came from a jar, and there was very little meat relative to the handful of other options in the area. Overall, very bland and not worth the money. I'd much prefer a jar of KFI over this place. Will not order from them again.

Yelp
Good food, decent drink selection, clean restaurant and very friendly and helpful servers. The price to portion size ratio is out of whack. The yellow dahl is half the portion of many other restaurants and the same price.

Yelp
We were actually walking along West 4th to go for dinner at Jolly's (just the other side of MacDonald St.) when we passed Karma and decided to finally give it a try. I'm so glad that we did and realize now how lucky we are to live very close by, we'll DEFINITELY visit again. I've always liked the cosy interior of this place and even though it's changed ownership/names several times in recent years, they've thankfully kept the inside virtually the same. Since it opened as Karma Indian Bistro last Summer/Fall we've been meaning to go and made the spontaneous decision to ditch Jolly's and eat here instead this past Friday night and it really was quite outstanding. We had excellent and attentive service from the moment we walked in, delicious smells emanated from the kitchen, and with both of us being vegetarians, we were pleased to see the menu includes a very decent selection of veggie options. The overall ambience is very nice and even the music was at a level where you could still have a conversation. All sounding good so far....and when the food arrived, more delight. The two of us ordered several dishes to share and everything was incredibly flavourful and portions are a good size. We'd ordered our food medium-hot and it was a safe (but not overly cautious) level of medium - just perfect if you're tempted to go a little spicier than mild. Next time we'll likely try it hot just to kick it up a notch but the medium level is certainly good too. Both the manager and our server were very interested to get our feedback on everything, even asking whether we found it too hot or spicy. Drink options were also good and, preferring a beer, the local craft brews they had available were all decent choices. It's not often that I give a restaurant 5 stars on the first try but I honestly cannot fault a thing about our dinner at Karma and would highly recommend you try it. Plus, since we had enough leftovers to take home, we simply threw it all together in a skillet next morning and threw in a couple of whisked eggs - it was soooooo tasty! So don't hesitate, give Karma a try and share your positive reviews here on Yelp because they would value your support and....perhaps selfishly since it's virtually next-door for us....we'd like to see them do well, they deserve their success and we plan to go back :-)

Yelp
Surprised that there are some bad reviews for this place cause the place is amazing. The butter chicken and potato naam bread were unbelievably good. The service was amazing as well, and so was the ambiance of the restaurant. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Order the Samoa chat! This was so delicious that I'll crave it in the future. The staff were friendly and attentive. Would recommend

Yelp
Quality meals, affordable prices, amazing service, this place has it all. From their buttered chicken to their tika masala, their naan breads, this place is a must-go if you are a fan of Indian food.
