11 Family-Friendly Restaurants in Miami and Fort Lauderdale | Eater

"When you venture past Calle Ocho’s tourist traps, you’ll find the real backbone of Cuban Miami: its cafeterias and bakeries. (Karmen Bakery is so tiny that you might miss it if you don’t know what you’re looking for.) Order some of their affordable but oh-so delectable treats to go and enjoy them while gazing out over the water. Here, a traditional Cuban sandwich on fresh-baked bread with a drink goes for less than $10 total. Make it a meal or go for smaller bites like croquetas with a cafecito. It doesn’t get much more Miami than that." - Vox Creative

Be careful with this store. If you pay by card, double-check the bill — they add a tip without your consent. I always give people a tip, even for to-go orders. $1.36 is nothing, but I’m upset because I didn’t know they were doing that. Real businesses don’t operate like that.

Very neat experience kind friendly and amazing desserts

Google
Since moving into the area, I have tried their food 3 times because of the proximity and convenience. Each time, I realize more and more that all of their items are just either old or bad quality with bad taste. At least the lady is nice...... Thats about it

Google
Cuban sandwich they say but ingredients did not. Meat smelled really bad. Thrown out without a bite. Disgusting

Yoendris Alfonso

Google
The sandwiches are incredible, crispy, and the smoothies are typical of Cuba.

Google
Honestly it isn’t the best place in the area to eat the service was blah but at least they made it more presentable. I don’t think I’ll come back.

Google
Reasonably priced pastries. Flan was too sweet for me but others enjoyed. Pastries were flaky. We were told it was a chicken empanada which was interesting because it had hot dog and deli meat.

Google
Stem wand wasn't cleaned after frothing the milk! There was a huge green mold spot on cheesecake!! Didn’t notice it till the end but I was lucky. The lady just throw the last piece away without apology! Not to mention that “small coffee” was not understood by worker there. I know its spanish speaking region but common not even “small coffee”?! I don’t understand how it got some positive reviews. I had horrible experiences in the past but this short experience here alone beat all of those combined.

Yelp
After eating across the street, we decided to check out this cute little bakery for some Cuban Coffee. We got a few coffees and some croquettes. The croquettes weren't to our liking though the coffees were great. The staff was also very friendly and the prices were very very reasonable. They also have a ton of other baked items and pastries but we were stuffed from lunch.

Yelp
I bought a variety of croquetas and a Cuban empanada. The empanada was shredded chicken very stuffed and not dry at all however overly salty. The ham croquettes were having lots of ham. I did not care for spinach at all. They also were soft soggy but that's personal style, I like them crisp. Friendly and nice place inside. They have a lot! Reasonable prices for a store. Croquetas are 1.25 which is not bad they cheaper in ventanitas but this is not bad

Yelp
I feel like I am always here all the time. This bakery for me is my favorite one in Little Havana. The food here is excellent. I always get their ham and egg croissants. For 12-13 dollars, you get your sandwich with a drink (mine is always cafe con leche) and a side of fries. The portion sizes are huge. They also have lots of baked goods. I tried their chocolate éclair and it did not disappoint. The service here is very fast. The bakery is family run. I always feel welcome when I come. Their cashier is always very attentive in getting your orders. The space is small, but you can still sit around. This is a perfect place for just a pick up and go.

Yelp
I recently went to Karmen, it must of changed management it was not good at all. I paid about 7$ for 4 pasteries. I used to go several times a week to get guava and cheese. The place looks empty and pasteries aren't as good anymore. The only good thing was the croquetas de chorizo.

Yelp
After having lunch, we need coffee. There was a Starbucks. But no....you are in Little Havana. We walked into order cafe con leche and cortadito with little sugar. They came out exactly what we wanted. Not too sweet but enough sugar to make cafe con leche good. The place is not a really sit down restaurant so tables and chairs are limited. It's small but has all Latin bakery essentials. Ladies were friendly even if you have limited English.

Yelp
Terrible service. Too many other really nice options nearby. Go elsewhere until they learn to treat customers better.

Yelp
While the pastries were pretty good and cheap, the owner (anyway, the guy behind the counter who seemed to be the owner) tried to shortchange me. I also think he made up a higher than normal price for us for a gatorade of unspecified price. So if you carefully ask all prices in advance and count your change, you'll probably come out fine, but still, it's a hassle that you can't trust them.

Yelp
A friend and I got a Cuban sandwich and pan con bistec and both tasted off. They had a chemicals/cleaner/perfume taste to them, as if they had been left near cleaning products. The Cuban sandwich also only had ham and cheese. Pan con bistec had a thin cut of beef with some sad tomato slices and lettuce. My sandwich was so gross I couldn't eat it and had to throw it away. Pastelitos also weren't fresh. Even my colada tasted off, and I couldn't finish it either. I've gone here before and it was okay, but this time was so bad that I'm not going back. Just too many things went wrong. The one good thing was that the lady behind the counter was nice.

Yelp
Stopped in because they have varieties of empanadas such as Venezuelan, Columbian, etc... I can't pass up a good empanada. Went with the 5 queso empanada. Stop in and choose something fresh made. Friendly service. Great prices.

Yelp
I think I just found one of my all-time favorite little bakeries ever! While in Miami last week, I stumbled across Karmen's and was blown away by their super affordable pricing, incredible service, and great tasting coffee/pastries! Being from nyc, I'm somehow used to a single coffee being upwards of $5.. insane right?! Well at Karmens, I walked away with a large coffee con leche and 3 pastries from only $7.50. Talk about bang for your buck! If you're in the area and looking for some cuban pastries, deliciously strong coffee and don't want to put a hole in your wallet... Karmen Bakery & Cafeteria is the spot to go, I promise!

Yelp
Solid bakery here on Calle Ocho in Miami, run by staff as sweet as the treats they offer. Walking distance up the road from Sanguich de Miami, I headed over on the hunt for a little treat to help beat this heat. I ended up with Arroz con Leche, which was good and a Pudin de Pan which was NEXT level. Delicious and sweet with fresh ingredients you can taste. Granted the size of the serving may be smaller, but that's fine because I'd rather pay less than $3 for something I'll still enjoy. They have more savory treats here as well and you can even pick up sandwiches like a Media Noche. They do birthday cakes too, and even I, a grown ass woman would order that Batman cake.

Yelp
Love this place! In the heart of Little Havana, great staff. Try their chorizo and cheese croquetas, amazing. Love that they make it fresh in the moment if you request it. Also their papaya smoothie is worth a try! They have a grand variety of food from sandwiches, fritura, bakery items, smoothies, coffee and more.

Yelp
A small spot for food, coffee, and pastries outside the touristy area of Calle Ocho. Only seats for 6 people. Most people seemed to get their goodies to go. The prices are very reasonable (2 coladas and #8 combo: media noche, fries, soda=$9). Everything was very tasty. The woman who I placed my order with originally seemed to have a bit of a chip on her shoulder but everyone else behind the counter was very friendly and helpful.

Yelp
Amazing Cuban coffee and desserts to die for. Limited seating, best to take stuff to go.

Yelp
This review is based off the food I had delivered from UberEats only, so never stepped inside the bakery. Every order has been delicious, and their breakfast croissant is hands down best in Miami. They use media noche type sweet bread, and it's jam packed with savory jamon and cheese. Cafe con leche is always PERFECT. Not overbearingly sweet, just the way I like. Reasonable prices too. Makes my early morning work days smoother.

Yelp
I had their pumpkin pie and it was not bad. Its not too sweet. They have decent price too. They have other type of bakery and coffee.

Yelp
I had the cheese and guava pastry and it was so good. The guy working there is also super sweet.

Yelp
I don't know if it's me or just me? But every time I come here, I feel like I'm dealing with the Pastelito Nazi. This lady behind the display counter is TOUGH! I swear she grunts with every order she hears. But then again, she knows that we know that her stuff is good. Glare. Stare. Flinch. You lose, and fork over chump change for the sugary treat to beat. Pastelitos de guayaba, my friend crazed about. I particularly also like the pastelito de coco. The Cuban coffee here is also good, and strong. And so we leave. Leaving the dingy place that time has lost. Probably because of this woman. NOTE: Heard about the flan being the other thing to try here. I'll have to check this out next.

Yelp
Food is alright, owner is really nice as well as the young man that works sometimes. The only reason I do not give a 5 star review is this red hair lady who ALWAYS is very rude, she talks back and does not have patience at all when I have questions about the menu. She needs some matters and does not like to accommodate or substitute preferences in food for options within their own menu. Whenever I see she's working I simply do not go into the place.

Yelp
Great price. Friendly staff. In my opinion the best Cuban pastries I'be tried in Miami. I will definitely go back.

Yelp
This is the real Karmen Bakery -- the other one listed on Yelp is really Yisell Bakery (she bought it from Karmen two years ago). In any event, between the two, this is far better in pastries - less flaky, larger and they make fresh batches if you ask them to without any issue. I bought from both of them and sampled the beef pastelitos from both - Karmen wins - the pastry has more meat and as I stated earlier - less flakes. I wanted to make sure I brought the best one to a shin dig I was going to -- even though I didn't bake either, I feel a sense of responsibility to bring delicious contributions. The prices are reasonable as well - and they prepare for large events if you order in advance.

Yelp
Was walking down calle 8 and found this bakery. The pastelitos were delicious and the cortadito was so amazing!! I've had many many pastelitos and cortaditos and these truly hit the spot. The man behind the counter was also very kind!

Yelp
A great place to stop for either a quick snack like a cafe con leche and an empanadas or a big order of dozens of croquetas and a birthday cake. There's a wide variety of pastires and savory snacks to choose from. A long table lining the shop's front window with about 5 stools is the dine-in area. So if its just a few of you, stay, relax, and have a cup of coffee. If its a group of you, take the coffee to go!
google avatar

Cindy G.

Yelp
Their pastelitos taste horrible all of them. They taste like eggs! I will never spend my money here! Staff is not friendly at all. Not welcoming.
google avatar

Sheyla G.

Yelp
I've been going here since I was 10 years old. Love it. Its like family. Andy is the best, the young owners son is just so sweet and as I call him my bartender, when I need a few moments away from the hectic work day, I go there for a pastelero and he always makes me laugh, his mom too. They are just too sweet just like the pastries.

Yelp
Yummy Cuban pastries. My favorite was the chicken croquette...sooo good & flavorful. The cafe con leche was also good. Friendly & pleasant staff. Nice spot to go to for breakfast or a quick snack!

Kris O.

Yelp
This place is horrible. The service is horrendous and they were very rude!!! I would never go there again. If you're on 8th street, just go across the street if you are looking for breakfast

Kenneth M.

Yelp
Terrible service. Employee saw me walk in and turned back around to finish whatever she was doing. I'm standing in front of the display case for 5 minutes until two female patrons walk in and were immediately assisted.

Yelp
if you're looking for many types of flan--this place is it, from dulce de leche to the flan diplomatico (fruit inside), check it out...$1.50
